Verizon's Galaxy Tab priced at $600

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Verizon Wireless defended its $600 price tag for the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which goes on sale Nov. 11, noting that no service contract is required and that the device comes with embedded 3G cellular service along with Wi-Fi.

Verizon customers will only pay monthly for data usage on the Galaxy Tab, starting at $20 a month for 1GB, Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney said Wednesday. The pricing is the same as for buying the Wi-Fi iPad bundled with the MiFi mobile hotspot from Verizon starting on Oct. 28, which includes the $20 for 1GB, $35 for 3GB, $50 for 5GB and $80 for 10GB. (The $80 plan was not originally included in the iPad bundle announcement, but applies to both the iPad and the Galaxy Tab.)

Raney said the no-contract plans are unique to tablets, since they are new to Verizon and offer novel uses for customers. She wouldn't say if Verizon is announcing more tablets in coming weeks.

Typically, Verizon and other carriers require a two-year service contract for a smartphone purchase, so Verizon's approach represent an important shift in data pricing from carriers. But it is a similar approach that AT&T started in the spring for monthly iPad 3G service priced at $14.99 for 250MB and $25 for 2GB)

"Verizon Wireless has always been committed to providing customers with the latest technology, and the latest announcements reflect that commitment to a relatively new entrant into the mobile arena -- tablets," Raney said. "The data plan pricing for the tablets are reflective of how people use these multi-purpose devices, and because they are 3G and Wi-Fi enabled, customers have a choice in how, when and where they use them."

Some commenters at Computerworld complained that the $600 price tag for the Galaxy Tab was unreasonable compared to the iPad, which starts at $499 for the 16GB version.

But an iPad with 3G from AT&T adds $130 to the pricetag, bringing the 16GB version to $629, or $30 more than the Galaxy Tab.

Other Galaxy backers have noted that the device has a port for expanding storage by 32GB in addition to the 16 GB internally. (Galaxy will also come with a 32GB internal storage model, but it is not clear whether the carriers will offer it.)

The iPad also has no camera, while the new Galaxy has two: one 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera and one 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera.

One of the biggest differences is the touchscreen size, with the iPad's at 9.7 inches and the Galaxy's at 7 inches. The iPad with 3G and Wi-Fi weighs 1.6 pounds, while the Galaxy is .84 pounds.

Both run 1GHz processors, and the iPad runs iOS 3.2 (with iOS 4.2 due in November), while the Galaxy runs Android 2.2, which will be upgradable to Android 3.0 at an unspecified time.

All four major U.S. carriers are selling the Galaxy Tab, but only Verizon appears to have officially announced pricing and availability. Sprint is rumored to be offering the Galaxy Tab for $399 with a two-year contract, or $599 without, starting Nov. 14, but Sprint has not officially confirmed that information.

Android Gingerbread First details

Monday, October 18, 2010

Android Gingerbread, the most tasty version of Android to come out
yet. It's still in development, but the details are peeking through
the cracks. Let's take a taste! First of all, there's a very possible
graphical overhaul. Google's hired ex-Palm user interface expert
Matias Duarte, pointing directly at a lovely new look that'll blow
everyone else out of the water (not that this is going to be the
hardest thing to do in the world, you aesthetic sinners, you.)
Standard icons have a new simpler look, appearing now to have all come
from the same illustrator rather than a gaggle. And then there's
green, so much green!

This blurred as sin photo is all that's available to the world at the
moment, so I added a little gingerbread man there to brighten your
blurry blues away. The notification bar's turned from a milk color to
a gray, a color more and more prevalent on the internet in layouts
these days, have you noticed? After that, there's lots of greens, a
prominent logo for whichever carrier you've purchased this from. The
main homescreen is essentially the same, most of the colors moving
toward a more prominent green, especially the Browser and Dialer
buttons which are no longer gray but a wild lime.
Sources report that a lot of the change will come through the feel of
the apps, making them more a part of the OS than a plugged-in bonus.
YouTube, for example, will be displayed in a way unlike any other
place you're going to be able to access it, with a full-screen
continuous play mode called "Lean Back" which you can also use to view
the newly -launched Google TV.
Things are getting bouncy as they've been getting on iOS devices and
on TouchWiz 3.0 devices when walking up and down lists. Force-fields
hit your finger as you reach the end of the line in either direction.
Gingerbread overall seems to accelerated, slightly smoother, and in so
many tiny ways just a little nicer. Then there's video chat.
Using the same protocols that power video chat on the desktop version
of Google Talk. SIP support will be added so you can receive calls on
your Google Voice number over WiFi and cell. This means that even if
you don't have a voice plan, you can use your device as a phone for
free just so long as you're within range of the internet. This feature
seems to be Gingerbread-and-higher specific. So what a tasty treat
there shall be!

Google Updates 'Car Home for Android'

Friday, October 1, 2010

Car Home for Android is an application that provides lots of the tools
drivers want at their fingertips when behind the wheel. Google on
Friday rolled out updates to the app, including new features like
shortcuts, icon colors, and a background wallpaper option.
"Car Home for Android turns your Android phone into a better driving
companion by providing you with quick access to key applications on
the go: GPS navigation, voice-activated commands, contacts, and more,"
Markus Mühlbauer, Google Automotive's manager of engineering and
product, said on the Google Mobile blog. "We're releasing a new
version of Car Home for Android which makes it easier to customize Car
Home to get the information you need faster."
The app can now be automatically launched when linked with a special
dock mounted on the windshield or when it's connected with Bluetooth.
You can also customize for one-touch access to certain apps and phone
information via "Add shortcut," as well as select personal wallpaper
settings.
The free app is available in Android Market for phones running Android 2.2.
The updated app debuts at an opportune time. This week, several
studies related to the dangers of distracted driving have been
released. A study released Thursday by Vlingo revealed that 35 percent
of drivers are using their phones to text while driving, and a study
by the Highway Loss Data Institute found that bans on texting behind
the wheel aren't decreasing collisions. As more data becomes
available, the need for hands-free solutions will likely increase.

Android expanding around the world

According to Google, the Android Market is on its way to 18 more
countries--including Brazil, India, Mexico, Russia, and
Sweden--bringing the total to 32 countries. Google said that
developers who have already made their applications available to "All
Locations" will not need to change that status for their programs to
be available to the new customers.

Android Market users will likely also find more apps in the store,
thanks to Google's decision to allow developers in 20 more countries
to sell paid apps in the marketplace, raising the figure to 29 nations
altogether. The company said developers in Canada, Switzerland, and
Taiwan are among those who can now sell apps.

Developers can start selling apps on the Android Market immediately.
Customers looking to buy apps in the new countries can start doing so
"over the next two weeks," Google said. Android Market it's going to
additional countries in the coming months.

Google Phone Gallery Offers Phone Comparisons

Thursday, September 30, 2010

The Google Phone Gallery is a "showcase of Android-powered devices,"
Ben Serridge, product manager for Android, wrote in a blog post. It is
live now at google.com/phone, and includes phones that have the
Android Market, Google Search, and Google Mobile services.
"There are tools that make it easy to compare phones side by side: you
can filter phones by country, manufacturer, and carrier; view and
compare technical specifications and features; and find where each
phone is available for sale," Serridge wrote.
Users can sort by newest devices or alphabetically by phone name. The
gallery currently lists phones from HTC, LG, Motorola, and Samsung, as
well as all four of the top U.S. carriers and US Cellular.

The top five newest phones listed on the U.S. site are the Motorola
Charm, Samsung Epic 4G, the Droid 2, the Samsung Captivate, and the
Motorola i1. Next to each photo of the phone is a "buy from" link that
takes you to the phone's carrier Web site for purchase options. There
is also an "add to compare" button – add up to three phones to a
"side-by-side comparison" list on the right-hand side, and click
"compare selected" for a run-down of each device.

Ironically, the first time I tried to compare three phones, I got an
error page with the Nexus One logo running along the top bar. The
second time I tried, it behaved and gave me a run-down of the features
on the Droid 2 versus the Samsung Captivate, including OS version,
connectivity, battery, storage and memory, size and weight, hardware,
camera, and more.

Google unveiled its Nexus One – initially referred to as the "Google
Phone" – in early January. Users could purchase the device online at
google.com/phone for $529.99 unlocked or $179.99 with a two-year
contract from T-Mobile. Google announced in May that due to lack of
customer interest in the Nexus One, the company would no longer sell
it online and instead offer it for sale at brick-and-mortar locations.
In July, the company received its last shipment of Nexus One
smartphones, and the device is now only available overseas.

Google later made the Nexus One available to developers for $529, and
so many took the company up on its offer that Google sold out.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab has Android apps display issues

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Samsung has responded to claims that some Android Market apps won't scale up to the native resolution on its Galaxy Tab.

Samsung not only responded to the display issue but also confirmed that it does exist and is a problem. Most apps scale up to the 1024x600 resolution on the 7-inch Galaxy Tab screen. However, some apps designed for Google's Android Market aren't scalable and only display at 800x400.
There will be a perceptible difference on the screen and it will be an issue for other vendors thinking of building larger tablets running the Android OS.

The problem exists because Android was developed and designed from the ground up to work on smartphones. No one thought it would be scaled up to become the OS of choice for a range of much bigger tablets.

We reported a couple of weeks ago that Google point blank said Froyo tablets couldn't tap into its Android Market. Google's global product management director for mobiles, Hugo Barra told a media briefing at the company's London offices yesterday, "If you want Android market on that platform, the apps just wouldn't run, Froyo is not optimised for tablets."
Companies like Toshiba, Archos and Samsung will have to rely on their respective apps stores if they want to keep the great unwashed happy.

We also reported at the time that Samsung said that the Galaxy Tab would be able to access the Android Market without any problems.

"The Tab is marketed as a phone/handset so has all the same capabilities as the Android phones on the market - there aren't any apps you can't use," a Samsung spokesperson told The INQUIRER.
Now Samsung has been caught out and is on the back foot, having admitted that some Android apps don't work properly.

We contacted a Samsung UK spokesperson about all this but were given a "no comment" response until tomorrow. Āµ

Ethernet service is well-suited for numerous customer applications, based on its ability to provide point-to-point and multipoint connectivity options combined with multiple classes of service and increments of bandwidths.

Demand for SES is increasing, driven by trends such as wireless carriers using Ethernet backhaul to stay ahead of the growing demand for high-bandwidth wireless services. Verizon currently provides links for thousands of cell sites and mobile switching offices from its advanced fiber-optic network, using Ethernet-based technology.

"With this 100G Ethernet trial, Verizon is preparing for the future and the need to meet our customers' bandwidth needs in the metro Ethernet space," said Jean McManus, executive director of technology for Verizon. "The network of tomorrow will include building blocks such as 100G Ethernet that allow us to scale our switched Ethernet core as access speeds and customer demands increase."

The trial, which ran from June 14 – 18, used existing Alcatel-Lucent 7450 switching equipment with new plug-in cards to place native 100GE traffic on a single fiber, creating the high-speed links.

"Our goal is to show 100GE can be carried on a metro network and do it with current equipment that avoids major changes -- and the associated costs -- to the existing network infrastructure," said McManus.

Alcatel-Lucent's 7450 ESS nodes used 100 GE service interfaces with 100GBASE-LR10 optics, which provide low-cost, high-bandwidth transport over distances of up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Verizon is at the forefront of accelerating the availability and adoption of 100GE technology.

"A seamless transition to 100GE leveraging existing Alcatel-Lucent IP Routing platforms enables Verizon to expand its innovative Ethernet service offerings in a timely and efficient manner," said Robert Vrij, president of the Americas region at Alcatel-Lucent. "Services are the driver of revenues and the rationale for investment in the network. Our platforms deliver speed without compromising services, leveraging our breakthrough 100G silicon innovation and long-standing relationships with leading service providers such as Verizon."

Alcatel-Lucent offers the industry's first 100GE interfaces that deliver the full range of routed and switched services for residential, business and mobile services. Deployed in networks serving metropolitan areas -- at the service edge or in the core of the network -- Alcatel-Lucent's modules extend the applicability of 100GE far beyond core transport. Combined with 100G optical transport technology, Alcatel-Lucent offers exceptional end-to-end scalability, performance and compatibility to help support bandwidth scaling and control costs -- key tenets of Alcatel-Lucent's High Leverage Network (HLN) architecture.

In each of the past four years, Verizon has received top awards, including "International Service Provider of the Year" and "Service Provider of the Year – Best in Business," from the Metro Ethernet Forum on the strength of the company's comprehensive and robust Ethernet portfolio, extensive geographic coverage and industry innovation.

Verizon's SES network supports Ethernet LAN (E-LAN) and Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) metro services. E-LAN is a multipoint-to-multipoint bridging service designed for any-to-any connectivity between dedicated ports. EVPL is an all-fiber optic network service that connects subscriber locations at native LAN speeds using point-to-point Ethernet virtual connections.

This latest trial follows Verizon's deployment of the first live 100G commercial system on its European optical core network between Paris and Frankfurt as well as a series of successful 100G technology trials the company has previously completed.

In November 2007, Verizon and Alcatel-Lucent successfully completed the industry's first field test of 100G optical transmission on a live network route between Tampa, Fla., and Miami. In October 2008, Verizon and Nortel proved 100G transmission could perform with better tolerance for signal distortion than typically found in today's standard 10G wavelength. In September 2008, Verizon and Nokia Siemens Networks announced they had successfully transmitted data at 100G on a single wavelength for more than 1,040 kilometers, setting a new distance record over deployed fiber and demonstrating better performance than conventional transmission.

Argent Releases Provocative White Paper: 'Does The Cloud Make SCOM Obsolete?'

NEW YORK -- While the exact definition of "The Cloud" is still being debated, one undeniable fact is the Cloud is the future. Two years ago, when 'cloud' was mentioned people thought only of the sky (or Hamlet) – technology revolutions are always sudden and surprising. For some experts, VMware is the main driver of Cloud technology, and VMware introduces a completely different architecture. Argent's new White Paper is a technical description of why server-centric monitoring products, such as Microsoft's SCOM product and Argent's legendary Argent Guardian product, may well have been superseded by the VMware-based Cloud.

Microsoft SCOM or "System Control – Operations Manager" is Microsoft's flagship monitoring product, focused on the comprehensive monitoring of Windows servers; SCOM can monitor Linux and Unix servers by using "Management Packs" from independent third parties. Argent's legendary Argent Guardian product competes with SCOM. This Argent White Paper cogently argues that SCOM is now superseded because SCOM's server-centric architecture fails to handle VMware and, thus, the Cloud. "We believe all customers need the new technology now available in the Argent for VMware product, which manages, automates, and monitors all aspects of the VMware-based Cloud," explained Matthew Chan, Senior Vice President and CTO of Argent. "This is what this white paper is all about," stated Chan. The White Paper is available at no cost by accessing the link of http://www.Argent.com/cloud.

A First-of-Its-Kind Location-Based Mobile Advertising Trial in Germany Yields Strong Returns for Best Western Via NAVTEQ LocationPoint(TM) Advertising

The hotelier scores robust returns in increased membership, guest registrations from a global ad campaign with NAVTEQ LocationPoint Ad Services.

BERLIN -- NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the world, today announced the results of its first location-based mobile ad services campaign in Germany. That campaign featured ads from global hotelier Best Western delivered via NAVTEQ LocationPoint Advertising to mobile German consumers using Nokia Ovi Map-enabled smart phones.

Available in the United States and successfully deployed in trials in other parts of Europe, NAVTEQ's LocationPoint Advertising harnesses NAVTEQ's location content and capabilities to pinpoint where mobile consumers are, deliver ads and calls to action within close proximity to advertised points of purchase, and guide them to the merchant's doorstep. Built-in calls to action, including "click to call," "click to web," and "click to map," bolster consumer engagement with ads, drive traffic to advertised locations, and make the service unique.

The exclusive advertiser in the month-long location-based campaign, the first of its kind in Germany, featured Best Western ads sent to on-the-go consumers of Nokia Ovi Map-enabled phones as they approached one of Best Western's 180 properties throughout Germany. The ads enticed consumers with an offer to receive 30% discounts when those users booked early at a Best Western property. The campaign garnered a click-through rate of 1.44%--more than seven times the 0.19 average of online banner ads, according to Forrester Research. Fifteen percent of all consumers who clicked on the initial ad requested mapping information to the local Best Western property, signaling NAVTEQ's LocationPoint Advertising power to convert clicks to paying customers.

"Hotel users by definition are in areas with which they're not familiar," said Alexander Birk, Manager, E-Commerce Best Western Hotels Germany. "NAVTEQ LocationPoint provides an effective advertising channel to target those mobile consumers when they're looking for accommodations in unfamiliar areas or are within a short distance from a Best Western property. It's an elegant way to extend a more personal, relevant invitation for those consumers to become our guests."

"One of the reasons traditional brands have been slow to embrace new media like mobile is because it has been difficult to prove ROI," said Christopher Rothey, vice president, advertising, NAVTEQ. "This Best Western trial validates the promise of NAVTEQ LocationPoint Advertising to brick and mortar businesses, such as hotels, retail stores, and restaurants, which seek to drive consumers in their doors—and do it in ways that can be measured to show proof of return on investment."

About NAVTEQ

NAVTEQ is the leading global provider of maps, traffic and location data (digital location content) enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the world. NAVTEQ supplies comprehensive digital location content to power automotive navigation systems, portable and wireless devices, Internet-based mapping applications and government and business solutions. The Chicago-based company was founded in 1985 and has approximately 4700 employees located in 204 offices in 46 countries.

thePlatform Expands Video Publishing Support for Wide Range of 'Over-the-Top' Services

Enables Customers to Publish Video to IP-Connected Set-Top Boxes, TVs, Blu-ray Players and Online Services From Companies Including Boxee, DivX, Free Stream Media, Mitsubishi, LG, Roku, Samsung, Syabas, TiVo, Toshiba, VUDU, VIZIO and Others

Company to Provide Support for Google TV When New Service Launches.

SEATTLE -- thePlatform, the leading white-label video publishing company, announced today that its video publishing system can enable customers to publish video across a wider range of popular over-the-top (OTT) services and IP-connected set-top boxes, TVs and Blu-ray Players. With a decade of experience managing cross-platform video publishing initiatives for leading media and entertainment companies, thePlatform outlined its intent to help customers leverage the expanding number of IP-connected home entertainment systems, including the upcoming Google TV platform.

According to The Diffusion Group's (TDG) report, Broadband-Enabled TV: Evolution of OTT Hardware Platforms, more than 360 million households worldwide will own the components necessary to enjoy OTT video services on their TVs by 2014 – across games consoles, Blu-ray Players, hybrid set-top boxes, Internet set-top boxes, media-centric PCs, and networked digital TVs. Today, thePlatform enables hundreds of media companies to publish and monetize billions of professionally produced video views annually across PCs, TVs and mobile phones. While the majority of the video managed by thePlatform is now delivered to PCs, thePlatform expects that mix to shift dramatically in the coming years with the advancement of more IP-connected devices in the home and more video-centric mobile devices.

"Media and entertainment companies are looking well beyond today's PCs and conventional set-top-boxes to reach their audiences," said Ian Blaine, CEO of thePlatform. "At the end of the day, our customers produce and distribute compelling video that they want to monetize, and it's our job to alleviate the complexity to make that happen across any device or platform. Our support for these OTT services is just the beginning, and we look forward to assisting our customers' efforts across any number of next-generation, IP-connected devices."

"Boxee's mission is to create the best experience for enjoying TV shows, movies, and video from the Internet on a TV, no matter what the source," said Avner Ronen, CEO and co-founder, Boxee. "This new relationship with thePlatform means that media and entertainment companies can now easily add Boxee as a distribution point to expand their audiences and generate more revenue from advertising and rentals/purchases."

mpx Beta Publishing Profiles, Feeds Service, and Player Development Kit: Support for OTT

Unlike other video management systems, thePlatform's mpx Beta allows customers to upload multiple media files simultaneously and easily distribute video to websites, mobile phones and other IP-connected devices with a few simple clicks. For example, thePlatform was the first online video publishing company to introduce a profile for the newly released Apple® iPad™ back in February of this year. Today, the company unveiled publishing profiles for several new OTT platforms and stated its readiness to support publishing profiles for Google TV when that service launches.

mpx Beta uses a unique and highly efficient, non-linear "publishing profile" approach that considers a video's destination point first – in effect, reversing the common workflow for video publishing. Once configured, this "smart publishing" methodology automates the required steps for video management, including file creation, transcoding, thumbnail generation and more. In the end, this intuitive design eases video publishing requirements, simplifies the process, and makes the system more accessible to a broader set of users.

In addition, customers can use thePlatform's Feeds Service to deliver video into various playback environments and thePlatform's Player Development Kit (PDK) to build their own HTML5- or Flash-based experiences for consumers.

With today's announcement, thePlatform has enabled premium video management and publishing to the following OTT services, catering to the varying software and hardware offerings by each:

* Boxee, Inc. (video service and upcoming Boxee Box by D-Link) with details at www.boxee.tv;
* DivX, Inc. (IP-connected consoles, TVs, Blu-ray Players and more) with details at www.divx.com;
* Free Stream Media Inc.'s FlingoTV™ (upcoming video service) with details at www.flingo.tv;
* Roku, Inc. (line of Roku players) with details at www.roku.com;
* Syabas Technologies (upcoming popbox) with details at www.popbox.com;
* TiVo Inc. (line of IP-connected boxes including the TiVo Premiere) with details at www.tivo.com;
* VUDU Inc. (line of VUDU-enabled TVs and Blu-ray Players from LG, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Toshiba, and VIZIO) with details at www.vudu.com.

thePlatform currently provides online video management services to numerous programmers, leading media companies, and five of the top cable TV service providers in North America. In order to support the increasingly complex needs of customers to manage cross-platform video publishing, thePlatform provides robust customer support, including professional services, account management, and industry-leading 24/7 technical support.

3D Eye Solutions, Inc. Continues to Successfully Implement Licensing Strategy

LONGWOOD, Fla. -- 3D Eye Solutions, Inc. (Pink Sheets: TDEY) is pleased to announce that the Company continues to implement its licensing strategy with the signing of five licenses over the last several weeks. 3D Eye Solutions has signed license agreements with companies that cover a variety of vertical markets such as film, broadcast television, video game, digital signage, and the communications industries in both North America and Europe. The Company's licensees are able to market and sell 3D Eye's proprietary 2D to 3D conversion technology to their existing contact network and customer base within their respective industries. 3D Eyes strategy is to generate additional revenue through the sale of licenses and the exclusive 2D to 3D content conversion that is included in the terms of each license agreement.

The Company's state of the art 2D to 3D content conversion technology is compatible and can integrate its proprietary conversion process and file formats with all of the industry leading 3D display and viewing platforms, which include Magnetic 3D, Alioscopy, Samsung, LG, Texas Instruments, Panasonic, RealD, Dolby 3D, IMAX 3D, Macintosh, and PC, amongst others.

In recent years, a combination of increasing demands for more realistic images and evolving display technology has been the catalyst for advancements in the development of 3D images and pictures for various applications, and has enabled 3D technology to be put to practical use in the cinema, gaming, cell phone and television industries. To date most 3D products have used special glasses to separate a picture into two images, one for the left eye and the other for the right eye. But the market has strongly desired a more versatile and glasses-free approach that could be used anywhere. 3D Eye Solutions content conversion can offer both with and without glasses 3D images for 3D displays.

"The response our 3D technology has received is remarkable," stated Mike Gibilisco, CEO of 3D Eye Solutions, Inc. "Over and over again we hear positive comments about our technology's capabilities and applications. We have been able to showcase our state of the art technology at many events in 2010 and sign several licenses with key executives from various licensing companies, television and movie studios."

"We are very excited about Todd joining Huntington's investor relations team," said Don Kimble, senior executive vice president and chief financial officer.
