Apple became the most important producer of telephones in the USA

The company Of apple in the passed block exceeded Motorola and she became the most important American producer of cell phones. According to the personal estimations of the company, they succeeded in placing on the market 8,75 million apparatuses of iPhone, while Of motorola, sales by which are steadily reduced, sold within the same period of approximately 8,5 million terminals. With the noticeable delay from the leaders “finished” Palm, which knew how to sell only 408 000 telephones. It is worthwhile to note that Apple did not become the most important producer of telephones on the North American continent, since the deliveries of the models of the company Of research In Of motion under the brand Of blackBerry exceed the indices Of apple. But the headquarters RIM is located in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and therefore company is considered for the market of the USA foreign.

Into [Kupertino] they undoubtedly observe this event as noticeable landmark in the history of company, although it is not worth forgetting that against the background a significant increase in sales of iPhone all competitors Apple experienced a whole series of difficulties. So Motorola only begins output from the protracted crisis and basic “impact” force are examined Android-[smartfony], whose market only is formed and regarding cannot be too mass. On other many positions Of motorola not at all it has proposals, and it means and sales. Nevertheless, successful debut on the American market for the models Of droid and Cliq can allow company to already soon return the lost positions, and output to the market for [smartfonov] of average level - confirm achieved (but thus far only possible) success.

As far as Palm is concerned, this company thus far did not leave the deep crisis and was sold Hewlett-Packard. Over the long term it is possible to expect the scale support of the production of [smartfonov] under the brand Of palm, and also scale use of an operating system of webOS in the solutions from HP. Also it is not worth forgetting that the success Of apple - this local event for one market, and against the background the results Of samsung, Nokia or even lg sale of 8,75 million apparatuses does not throughout the world appear any considerably.

Wounded Nokia chief to face frustrated investors

Nokia Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will next week face shareholders who are frustrated more than ever before.

The share price of the world's largest cellphone maker has missed the market recovery. The firm will be one of the few to miss profit growth in 2010, the year of economic recovery, and software problems continue to haunt its smartphone lineup.

It means Kallasvuo, who has spent more than half of his life at the company, could give his last speech to shareholders if Nokia cannot roll out a serious challenger to Apple's iPhone for the key holiday-sales season at end of the year.

The track record shows the chances are slim -- Nokia's last hit smartphone model was unveiled in 2006, the year when Kallasvuo, a long time company lawyer, took over at the helms of the Europe's top technology firm.

One year after iPhone's 2007 launch most smaller rivals have rolled out similar models. Last week Nokia delayed Symbian 3, its software platform revamp seen as a first step to make its smartphones competitive again, triggering a sell-off in its shares.

Analysts say there is more downside likely ahead.

"We are waiting for Wall Street to swing into panic mode regarding Nokia sometime during this spring or summer - this happened over the earlier platform transition screw-ups in 1997, 2001 and 2004," said MKM Partners' Tero Kuittinen.

After a blogger in Russia unveiled a critical review of the first phone using the new software, the company this week rushed out details of its new flagship N8 model, which failed to impress the market.

TIME FOR NEW BLOOD?

Analysts say Nokia could in the near future replace Kallasvuo -- who himself has done a reasonable job -- to soothe investors.

"It feels like it would please the investors," said Gartner's Carolina Milanesi.

Analysts at Jefferies cut Nokia's rating to "underperform" last week after the earnings report, saying: "Much appears amiss still with Nokia -- pressure on management may yet precipitate changes, a potential crumb of relief amidst the gathering gloom."

Alan B. Lancz, president of wealth management firm Alan B. Lancz & Associates, which holds Nokia stock, says investors are frustrated.

"Symbian 3 really concerns me," Lancz said. "If next quarter we see these delays and declines in margins -- the management will feel more and more pressure."

Lancz, and remaining analysts with buy recommendations, base their rating on Nokia's valuable assets.

The company has strong assets in manufacturing and it is well positioned across emerging markets. Its brand -- built in the 1990s on easy-to-use, durable, relatively simple mobile terminals -- is among the highest valued globally.

CONNECTING SOME PEOPLE IN U.S., ON THE WEB

When taking over the company Kallasvuo made one big promise -- he would focus fully on fixing Nokia's problems in the United States, spending a week each month on the problem.

At a time Nokia was struggling in the single largest phone market -- its market share there was just 20 percent, compared to global market share of around 35 percent. Now Nokia has just 7 percent of the U.S. market, according to Strategy Analytics.

"After a decade of continuous decline in the U.S., investors are right to ask whether Nokia really has the desire to fix the problem," said Neil Mawston, analyst at Strategy Analytics.

The big strategic shift under Kallasvuo's management -- to build up Internet services offering -- has so far cost more than $10 billion to shareholders, but signs of payback are limited.

Some of the new services have failed to gain traction, some other Nokia has ended or outsourced. None have come close to matching the success of Apple's App store.

Analysts doubt Nokia will reach its 2011 targets of 300 million users or annual revenues of 2 billion euros, and the company has admitted most of revenues would likely come from smartphone unit, which has to internally pay for services installed on the phones.

Nokia 1616 Review

Mobile-review have posted their review of the Nokia 1616. Here is their final impression.

Call quality is on par with modern GSM handsets, not better and not worse than most of them. Earpiece volume in some cases is not sufficient, you want to increase it a little, but unfortunately, you cannot. But the microphone sensitivity is nothing to dwell upon, the person on the other end almost always hears you well. The 1616 features 32-tone polyphony; ringtone volume is average; sound quality of preinstalled tunes is quite bearable. You can’t set your own ringtones, except for those five that you can create using “Tune Synthesizer”. The vibrating alert is average, sometimes it you cannot feel it.

The loudspeaker works without any problems.

MSRP for the 1616 is set at 24 Euro, similar to Nokia 1661 - the models are actually twins, an upgraded 1616 has the only trump card – keypad that is more pleasant. Should one look at competing solutions, there is only one - Samsung E1125 - that can be regarded as a rival, but it has lower display resolution, though other features are comparable to the Nokia-branded device. Given that such models are bought without long online research, both of the devices are sold in huge quantities; in fact we can say that are permanently in short supply. In this aspect, Nokia 1616 is a successful model from the first days of its life. It has no problems, it is reliable, inexpensive, and it is Nokia. Bestseller that can be recommended as a cheap phone for calls without any hesitation. A perfect solution for its class.

The Weirdest Lock Screen… And the Title Goes to: LCARS Star Trek style Lockscreen

When we usually speak of a lock screen, we are talking about something very simple like the WM6.5 lock screen, or even S2U2, but this one is not that simple. This new lock screen created by slackersink, who resides in the HD2 forum is a very peculiar one. It does not come with directions or instruction, but from the image it seems to have much information all in one place, but I am not quite sure where the unlock part is.

The lock screen to me looks like a map of my locale Mall of America(the biggest Mall in the world) except it has some good details like time, date, notifications, and more.

When you read the title it says it is suppose to be a Star Trek related lock, but for the life of me, I do not know what that is or plan to learn the nature of it(okay, I know what it is… but never watched it).

Thankfully the creator wrote a little note for us to know before using his new look screen:

My first mod, the LCARS Lockscreen! Make your lockscreen resemble the panels on the Enterprise! Yay! Also included, the original files they replaced.

Ahem…

Anyway, here is a zip file of everything needed to make your own lcars lockscreen. It’s a zip because apparently the cabs I had up here didn’t work properly… Can’t beat placing real files yourself, I guess. haha

-
Instructions:

First- Add files in the icons folder to windows\ directory in phone. Just the icons in the folder, not the full folder. Either use icons in the zip or install the icons cab file.

Second- Add lcarswallpaper.png and LS_LockScene_480×800.cpr to windows\lockscreen.

Third, reset the phone and you’re done!

I’ve also included the original files for what this mod changes in case you want to revert back.
-

I have no lockscreen mods, cookie’s home tab lockscreen is set to the default lockscreen so it won’t interfere, or anything aside from the memclock app as you can see on the top right of the screenshot so I can’t guarantee it will work with any mods. Like I said, This is my first so I apologize if it doesn’t work properly on your HD2. As far as mine goes, everything lines up perfectly.

Restart your phone and enjoy!

When you tap the slider to get your notifications, the calendar and clock disappear. I don’t know how to keep them their the entire time. If anyone can help with that, I’d appreciate it.

Vodafone UK Google Nexus One available now

Vodafone UK have put the Google Nexus One up for sale, and there’s no sign of the stock delay reported earlier this week. The launch marks the first time the Nexus One has been available through a UK carrier rather than demanding buyers import a device from Google in the US.

As for price, that’s likely enough to make US Nexus One owners livid. Vodafone are offering the Google Nexus One for free with a new two-year contract, as long as you’re spending £35 a month or more ($54).

MSI Android tablet launching in June but dualscreen delayed until Q4

Apparently MSI will show of an Android based tablet at Computex trade show in June. The word on the street is that it will come in two sizes, offering 8.9 inch and 10 inch displays. We should look forward to both of these tablets going live to the public in Q3 of this year.

Unfortunately the dualscreen version shown in this post will no longer become available at the same time, and it is likely that we shall have to wait until the forth quarter of this year to get our hands on one of these puppies. The primary hold-up on the dualscreen concept is that the battery life just sucks. No real surprises there to be honest…

Thoughts on Flash

Apple has a long relationship with Adobe. In fact, we met Adobe’s founders when they were in their proverbial garage. Apple was their first big customer, adopting their Postscript language for our new Laserwriter printer. Apple invested in Adobe and owned around 20% of the company for many years. The two companies worked closely together to pioneer desktop publishing and there were many good times. Since that golden era, the companies have grown apart. Apple went through its near death experience, and Adobe was drawn to the corporate market with their Acrobat products. Today the two companies still work together to serve their joint creative customers – Mac users buy around half of Adobe’s Creative Suite products – but beyond that there are few joint interests.

I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven – they say we want to protect our App Store – but in reality it is based on technology issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true. Let me explain.

First, there’s “Open”.

Adobe’s Flash products are 100% proprietary. They are only available from Adobe, and Adobe has sole authority as to their future enhancement, pricing, etc. While Adobe’s Flash products are widely available, this does not mean they are open, since they are controlled entirely by Adobe and available only from Adobe. By almost any definition, Flash is a closed system.

Apple has many proprietary products too. Though the operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad is proprietary, we strongly believe that all standards pertaining to the web should be open. Rather than use Flash, Apple has adopted HTML5, CSS and JavaScript – all open standards. Apple’s mobile devices all ship with high performance, low power implementations of these open standards. HTML5, the new web standard that has been adopted by Apple, Google and many others, lets web developers create advanced graphics, typography, animations and transitions without relying on third party browser plug-ins (like Flash). HTML5 is completely open and controlled by a standards committee, of which Apple is a member.

Apple even creates open standards for the web. For example, Apple began with a small open source project and created WebKit, a complete open-source HTML5 rendering engine that is the heart of the Safari web browser used in all our products. WebKit has been widely adopted. Google uses it for Android’s browser, Palm uses it, Nokia uses it, and RIM (Blackberry) has announced they will use it too. Almost every smartphone web browser other than Microsoft’s uses WebKit. By making its WebKit technology open, Apple has set the standard for mobile web browsers.

Second, there’s the “full web”.

Adobe has repeatedly said that Apple mobile devices cannot access “the full web” because 75% of video on the web is in Flash. What they don’t say is that almost all this video is also available in a more modern format, H.264, and viewable on iPhones, iPods and iPads. YouTube, with an estimated 40% of the web’s video, shines in an app bundled on all Apple mobile devices, with the iPad offering perhaps the best YouTube discovery and viewing experience ever. Add to this video from Vimeo, Netflix, Facebook, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ESPN, NPR, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and many, many others. iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren’t missing much video.

Another Adobe claim is that Apple devices cannot play Flash games. This is true. Fortunately, there are over 50,000 games and entertainment titles on the App Store, and many of them are free. There are more games and entertainment titles available for iPhone, iPod and iPad than for any other platform in the world.

Third, there’s reliability, security and performance.

Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now. We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.

In addition, Flash has not performed well on mobile devices. We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we’re glad we didn’t hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?

Fourth, there’s battery life.

To achieve long battery life when playing video, mobile devices must decode the video in hardware; decoding it in software uses too much power. Many of the chips used in modern mobile devices contain a decoder called H.264 – an industry standard that is used in every Blu-ray DVD player and has been adopted by Apple, Google (YouTube), Vimeo, Netflix and many other companies.

Although Flash has recently added support for H.264, the video on almost all Flash websites currently requires an older generation decoder that is not implemented in mobile chips and must be run in software. The difference is striking: on an iPhone, for example, H.264 videos play for up to 10 hours, while videos decoded in software play for less than 5 hours before the battery is fully drained.

When websites re-encode their videos using H.264, they can offer them without using Flash at all. They play perfectly in browsers like Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome without any plugins whatsoever, and look great on iPhones, iPods and iPads.

Fifth, there’s Touch.

Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers. For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot. Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover. Most Flash websites will need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices. If developers need to rewrite their Flash websites, why not use modern technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript?

Even if iPhones, iPods and iPads ran Flash, it would not solve the problem that most Flash websites need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices.

Sixth, the most important reason.

Besides the fact that Flash is closed and proprietary, has major technical drawbacks, and doesn’t support touch based devices, there is an even more important reason we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. We have discussed the downsides of using Flash to play video and interactive content from websites, but Adobe also wants developers to adopt Flash to create apps that run on our mobile devices.

We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers.

This becomes even worse if the third party is supplying a cross platform development tool. The third party may not adopt enhancements from one platform unless they are available on all of their supported platforms. Hence developers only have access to the lowest common denominator set of features. Again, we cannot accept an outcome where developers are blocked from using our innovations and enhancements because they are not available on our competitor’s platforms.

Flash is a cross platform development tool. It is not Adobe’s goal to help developers write the best iPhone, iPod and iPad apps. It is their goal to help developers write cross platform apps. And Adobe has been painfully slow to adopt enhancements to Apple’s platforms. For example, although Mac OS X has been shipping for almost 10 years now, Adobe just adopted it fully (Cocoa) two weeks ago when they shipped CS5. Adobe was the last major third party developer to fully adopt Mac OS X.

Our motivation is simple – we want to provide the most advanced and innovative platform to our developers, and we want them to stand directly on the shoulders of this platform and create the best apps the world has ever seen. We want to continually enhance the platform so developers can create even more amazing, powerful, fun and useful applications. Everyone wins – we sell more devices because we have the best apps, developers reach a wider and wider audience and customer base, and users are continually delighted by the best and broadest selection of apps on any platform.

Conclusions.

Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.

The avalanche of media outlets offering their content for Apple’s mobile devices demonstrates that Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. And the 200,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games.

New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind.

Android sales rocket

Android smartphone sales double twice in four weeks
Android phone sales have shot up fourfold in just four weeks, according to statistics from GfK Retail and Technology.

Contract Android phone sales rose in terms of handsets sold from 3% of the contract market in week 12 in 2010 to reach 12.3% in week 15. This took Android's share of the total market from 1.6% to 6.7% in the period.
GfK said almost one in every five Advanced OS phone purchased is an Android.

The figure for phones with Advanced OS account for 37.6% of the total mobile handset market, with this share rising to 63.9% in the contract-only sector. As this figure has remained fairly stable, GfK said the jump in Android phone sales showed Android phones were having a significant influence on the Advanced OS market.

GfK defines Advanced OS as all operating systems which are able to run independent compatible applications.

'The impressive growth rate exhibited in recent weeks is due to a succession of launches by several manufacturers,' said GfK analyst Megan Baldock.

Moving Forward

This morning Apple posted some thoughts about Flash on their web site.
The primary issue at hand is that Apple is choosing to block Adobe's
widely used runtimes as well as a variety of technologies from other
providers.

Clearly, a lot of people are passionate about both Apple and Adobe and
our technologies. We feel confident that were Apple and Adobe to work
together as we are with a number of other partners, we could provide a
terrific experience with Flash on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

However, as we posted last week, given the legal terms Apple has
imposed on developers, we have already decided to shift our focus away
from Apple devices for both Flash Player and AIR. We are working to
bring Flash Player and AIR to all the other major participants in the
mobile ecosystem, including Google, RIM, Palm (soon to be HP),
Microsoft, Nokia and others.

We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android
smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a
general release in June. From that point on, an ever increasing number
and variety of powerful, Flash-enabled devices will be arriving which
we hope will provide a great landscape of choice.

Verizon Wireless Network Prepared For 2010 Hurricane Season In Florida

Five “Super Switches” Cover Florida; $240 Million Invested In Past Year to Ensure Strong Service.

MIAMI, FL — Verizon Wireless, which operates the nation’s most reliable and largest voice and 3G data network, is ready for the 2010 Hurricane Season, which begins June 1. The Florida network team recently activated its fifth “Super Switch” facility in the state.

This new communication hub, which was completed earlier this year in Broward County, joins similar “Super Switch “ facilities in Tampa Bay, Jupiter, Orlando and Jacksonville that are designed to withstand Category 5 hurricanes and serve as the main call processing centers in their respective areas for Verizon Wireless customers.

These facilities are key parts of the company’s reinforced infrastructure that maintains network reliability for customers in even the most severe storms and circumstances. In addition to hardened shells, they feature large-scale on-site power generation, various redundant operations and technologies, and other back-up systems to ensure the Verizon Wireless network remains strong, running and reliable.

The switch facilities also serve as emergency operation centers when hurricanes or other emergencies arise.

“The public continues to rely on wireless communication more each day, especially during storms and other critical circumstances here in the state,” said Pam Tope, Florida region president of Verizon Wireless. “As the nation’s largest wireless carrier, we take our role in this public safety issue very seriously.”

The company has invested more than $240 million in its Florida network during the past year, and $2.1 billion in the state since the company was formed. Nationally, Verizon Wireless has spent more than $59 billion to enhance its digital wireless network since 2000.

Other Verizon Wireless ongoing efforts to ensure a reliable network during the storm season and year-round include:

* A comprehensive emergency response plan, including preparing emergency command centers across Florida in the case of a storm or other crisis.
* Verizon Wireless network technicians, who serve as the inspiration for the famous TV Test Man commercials, travel the state in six high-tech vehicles to measure the quality of voice and data calls on Verizon Wireless and other carriers.
* The company has a fleet of dozens of Cells on Wheels (COWS), Cells on Light Trucks (COLTS), and generators on trailers (GOaTS) that can be rolled into hard-hit locations or areas that need extra network capacity.
* Pre-arranging fuel delivery to mobile units and generators to keep the network operating at full strength even if power is lost for an extended period of time.
* Erecting new digital cell sites, of which about 80 percent have their own on-site generators and new expanded fuel tanks to extend their power-generating capacity.
* Installation of advanced in-building systems to boost wireless coverage and services at hospitals, government and emergency facilities, high-traffic public venues and other locations throughout Florida.
* Integrating Alltel Wireless facilities into the more advanced Verizon Wireless network, so former Alltel customers will benefit from the nation’s most reliable voice and 3G data network.

This year, Verizon Wireless plans to launch its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless services in 25 to 30 markets nationally. LTE will offer customers significantly greater network capacity than even today’s most advanced 3G coverage.

For more information on the Verizon Wireless network, products and services, visit www.verizonwireless.com.

Orange launches new creative direction for iconic Gold Spot cinema advertising in UK first

* “Don’t let a mobile ruin your movie” concept evolved with exciting new format never seen before in the UK
* The A-Team kick off new Gold Spot series with Orange ‘movie trailer’ through partnership with 20th Century Fox

Orange will unveil the latest reinvention of its celebrated cinema adverts, known as the Orange Gold Spots*. Since 2003, audiences have been entertained by the Orange Film Funding Board whilst being reminded to switch off their mobile phone before the film.

Previously the Film Funding Board have upset celebrity film pitches and interfered with actors both on and off set by trying to get more Orange brand mentions into their films. From 30th April 2010 the popular series of cinema ads will take the concept one step further and Orange will now take a leading role and star in spoof trailers for genuine films being released.

The first ‘Gold Spot’ will feature a tie-in with this summer’s blockbuster, The A-Team. With an all star cast, including Hollywood actors Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) as Face, Quinton Jackson as B.A and Sharlto Copley (District 9) as Murdock, the Orange Gold Spot actors reference blatant Orange branding in typically tongue in cheek, comical scenarios as they take on the bad guys.

The trailer starts as normal, then slowly starts to introduce references to the Orange brand as products begin to appear. What’s more, the actors are forced into more and more awkward product references until Hannibal, through gritted teeth, delivers the immortal line “I love it when a talk plan comes together.”

Spencer McHugh, Director of Brand for Orange UK said: “Orange has once again pushed the boundaries and taken cinema advertising to a place where no other brand could go. The opportunity to take over a real Hollywood film set, the movie and its cast is a reflection of our commitment and support of the film industry – resulting in an ad with the wow-factor that we hope our Gold Spot fans will love.”

The A-Team Gold Spot promotion is part of a wider partnership with 20th Century Fox in which Orange will help promote the A-Team movie to it’s customers.

The new ad, created by Fallon London, will appear across cinemas in the UK from Friday 30th April 2010.

Update: GPS function enabled on HTC Desire in Australia

HTC and Telstra have been working together to develop a software update that will correct the issue. This update will be available to customers this evening, Friday 30th April (AEST).

The software update will be available in two forms:

1. Firmwareover the air (FOTA). A notification will appear on the Telstra variant HTC Desire smartphones advising the customer an update is available. Customers can then choose to install this update over their mobile network or over Wi-Fi (it is recommended that customers travelling outside Australia use a Wi-Fi hotspot). The update will be unmetered for Telstra customers who download the update via the Next G™ network in Australia. Customers will receive step-by-step installation instructions with the notification.

2. Software download from the htc.com/au website. This software download will contain the complete updated software package (also known as the ROM) for the device. The package size is around 150MB and should be downloaded to a PC before being installed onto the HTC Desire via the bundled USB cable. Please note this method will erase any data stored on the device which cannot be reclaimed once new software is installed. Customers are strongly advised to back up all data on the device’s removable memory cards before installing new software as files stored on the device’s removable memory card will not be affected.

The software update also introduces an additional feature to the HTC Desire – voice search. Voice search allows customers to use voice commands to find information on the internet more quickly. The voice search feature is integrated within the search functions on the device and can be activated by pressing the microphone button next to the search box.

Customers can contact HTC if they have any further queries at http://www.htc.com/au/support.aspx
or call HTC Customer Care in Australia on 1300-482-482.

It’s a long way home

Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, UK – When the ash cloud shut down European airspace last week, people ended up stranded all over the place. Tales of forlorn travelers getting stuck in distant outposts came thick and fast and the adventures of some had to be seen to be believed. I know one banker who, trying to get back from Bahrain, ended up buying a car in Madrid to drive back to the UK. But there’s a tale of 10 Nokia employees who circumnavigated half of northern Europe in their 48 hour trek from Espoo to England. Read on after the jump to find out what happened.

Stuck in Espoo, Nokia’s Head of Music, Geoff Roberts was desperate to get back to Bristol in the UK. With no obvious route back, he got in touch with Nokia’s travel centre to find out if there were any foot passenger places on the ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm. From there he planned to make his way to Copenhagen and then onto Brussels. Not wanting to travel alone, and with a mind to help fellow stranded Nokians, he gave the travel centre his number and suggested other adventurers get in touch and rendezvous at the port.

From Stockholm, the now 10-strong group – which also included Nokia’s camera crusader, Damian Dinning – made their way to Copenhagen and then onto Germany before arriving, jaded, in Brussels. On route, one of the crew mentioned that he had a friend in shipping who was going to try and arrange a boat from Belgium to the UK. Fast forward to Ostende Port, via Brussels Eurostar terminal, and the motley crusaders were met by local immigration officers. Problem. The boat had been arranged, a small Multraship Responder (pictured), but UK immigration weren’t happy about letting a group of jaded travelers pitch up in an unscheduled boat.

After much cajoling and faxing of paperwork, the immigration folks relented and the Nokians were on their way across the English Channel in a noisy, almost three hour, ride across the waves. Landing in the UK, the team were met not just by UK immigration, but by a BBC camera crew. They also happened to be the last small vessel allowed to cross the channel.

With a pretty arduous experience behind them, Geoff has some tips to share with anyone else who ever needs to embark on such an adventure:

1. Stick together
2. Keep moving
3. Plan the next move two steps ahead of where you are
4. Sleep and eat when you can
