ABBYY Ships Recognition Server 3.0

New Version Adds Batch Scanning, Efficient Indexing, and Intelligent Output Handling to Its High Volume Automated OCR Server.

MILPITAS, Calif. -- ABBYY®, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic software, announced the worldwide availability of ABBYY Recognition Server 3.0, the latest version of its award-winning solution for document capture and optical character recognition (OCR). ABBYY Recognition Server is a server-based solution for automating document processing in enterprise and service-based environments. Version 3.0 builds upon Recognition Server with new batch scanning, efficient indexing, and scripting support to deliver a more complete functionality for document capture and conversion. By leveraging its scalable architecture, customers can easily deploy document processing projects of any scale with significant time and cost savings.

The product is designed to automatically convert large volumes of paper documents or document images into fully searchable electronic text suitable for business processes such as document archiving, e-discovery, and enterprise search. Recognition Server enables automated, unattended processing which can be centrally managed and accessed from multiple points within the organization or remotely. Recognition Server can also connect with a variety of back-end systems and third-party applications with integration via Scripts, XML tickets, a Web-service API, or a COM-based API. ABBYY intelligent OCR and PDF conversion technology delivers highly accurate document conversion with recognition of up to 190 languages.

New Recognition Server functionality is delivered through the addition of two new "stations" to the Recognition Server package. A new Scanning Station extends Recognition Server's capabilities beyond simple "back-end" processing to now support also capture of documents. Recognition Server's new Indexing Station provides a simple, efficient way to manually extract key data from a document for quick and easy indexing and cataloguing of document metadata.

ABBYY Recognition Server 3.0 delivers a range of feature and technology enhancements including:

High-Speed Production Scanning — The new Scanning Station supports high-speed batch scanning of paper documents via TWAIN, WIA, and ISIS drivers. Its intuitive interface gives users the flexibility to easily control the scanning process, preview acquired images, split the batch into documents, and redact sensitive information on the image before further processing. Scanned batches of pages can be sent to network folders, FTP servers or directly to ABBYY Recognition Server workflows for OCR and indexing.

Flexible Document Separation and Indexing — The new version delivers enhanced scripting functionality which enables administrators to create flexible rules for document separation. For example, documents can be separated by a certain word, phrase or a set of barcode values found on a page. By analyzing the structure and content of documents according to the pre-defined rules, the system can also perform document type detection and key indexing automatically. In addition, the new Indexing Station makes it easy for operators to specify document attributes and pull key data out of recognized text on a document. With its "point-and-click" indexing, operators simply use the mouse to outline the area on a page that contains the key data, e.g. invoice number, fax recipient's name, applicant's name, etc.

Intelligent Output Handling — Once the general processing is complete, output documents and their attributes can be routed to the next workflow stage or to final storage by an export handling script. A separate export handling script can be set up for working with failed jobs.

Connectors to Enterprise Search Systems — ABBYY Recognition Server 3.0 is compatible with Google Search Appliance™, Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server, and Windows® Search via special connectors available as Add-on modules. When using Recognition Server together with enterprise search systems, image-based documents such as faxes, scanned agreements, contracts, correspondence, and any other TIFF, JPEG or PDF files can be easily converted into fully searchable data for easy access by enterprise search tools.

Support for New OCR Languages and Barcode Types — The new version delivers enhanced technology for Chinese, Japanese and Korean OCR as well as improved recognition of multilingual documents with various language combinations (e.g. Japanese and German, Chinese and Russian, etc.). Among the newly added OCR languages are Vietnamese, Yiddish, and Latvian Gothic. In addition, the system now supports recognition of popular 2D barcode types such as Aztec, Data Matrix, and QR Code.

ABBYY ADRT® for Precise Document Structure Reconstruction — Recognition Server 3.0 includes ABBYY's unique ADRT (Adaptive Document Recognition Technology), an intelligent synthesis algorithm for reproducing the logical structure and original formatting of multipage documents when converting to Microsoft Word. By treating a multipage document as a single entity rather than a set of pages, ABBYY ADRT accurately re-creates logical elements of the document structure such as table of contents, headers, footers, page numbering, footnotes, and font styles across all pages.

Samsung Reinforces Display Technology and Design Leadership at InfoComm 2010

Samsung Austin Semiconductor Begins $3.6B Expansion for Advanced Logic Chips

New Facility Expected to Generate 500 Permanent Jobs.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC announced plans to expand the capacity of its 12-inch semiconductor fabrication plant in Austin with a $3.6 billion investment.

The decision to bring the additional capacity to Austin was based on the company's long-term business requirements.

The expanded fabrication plant, one of the largest in the United States, will produce advanced logic devices for Samsung's System LSI business. Currently the Austin plant produces a variety of NAND Flash memory chips. The production of those chips will continue.

The company will also hire an additional 500 employees as a result of the expansion.

"Forty-five nanometer and below advanced logic applications are in high demand and respective markets are expected to show substantial growth in the coming years. Together with the original advanced IC production capacity in Giheung, Korea, our rapid installment of substantial new capacity in Austin will allow our customers to meet the growing demand for their exciting next generation digital solutions," said Dr. Stephen Woo, executive vice president and general manager, System LSI, Samsung Electronics.

The investment in the Austin campus will build out the second phase of the company's 2.3-million-square-foot semiconductor complex. The first half of the building was started in 2006 and began production a year later.

The 12-inch facility was built in 2007. An older fabrication plant, which produced chips on 8-inch wafers, was closed in 2009 and refurbished for metal (copper) process for 12-inch fabrication.

The new facility, which is dedicated to front-end fabrication of advanced 45 nanometer logic process technology and beyond, is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.

"This investment, along with the creation of Samsung Austin Semiconductor's first research and development entity this spring, makes the Austin campus a true semiconductor complex and ensures Austin's premier status as a center for semiconductor research and manufacturing," said Dr. W. S. Han, president of Samsung Austin Semiconductor.

Equipment move-in and build-out of the clean room will begin almost immediately. "We expect that the facility will be operational by the second quarter of next year," he said.

In March, the company established Samsung Austin Semiconductor Research Center (SARC), which will concentrate on the design of Large Scale Integrated circuits, but is not part of the LSI manufacturing line. The center's director is Keith Hawkins, a veteran semiconductor researcher, who was senior director of design engineering-microelectronics at Sun Microsystems in Austin prior to joining Samsung.

SARC will employ about 50 researchers by the end of 2010.

Samsung started in Austin in 1996, when it began construction of its first plant. In total, Samsung has invested about $5.6 billion in the Austin location – by far the largest foreign investment in Texas and one of the largest single foreign investments in the United States.

The new investment will bring the total Samsung investment in Austin to more than $9 billion.

Employment at the Austin site is expected to grow from 1,000 employees to about 1,500 by 2011. The annual payroll in Austin will grow from its current $70 million to about $105 million.

Most of the new employees will be engineers and technicians, who will operate the highly automated equipment at the state-of-the-art plant.

Samsung, which already is the largest Austin Energy customer with an annual electrical utility bill of about $32.9 million, will substantially increase its electricity purchase by more than $45 million per year. Water and waste water purchases from the city will grow to almost $13 million per year.

Since 1996, Samsung Austin Semiconductor has paid about $120 million in local and state taxes.

In addition to the Samsung direct employees, almost 3,000 construction workers and equipment vendors will be at the plant to move in and set up the complex machinery that operates the semiconductor plant.

General contractor for the project is Samsung Texas Construction Inc.

Samsung Electronics Achieves First-Pass 32nm Silicon Success Using Synopsys Galaxy Implementation Platform

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNPS), a world leader in software and IP for semiconductor design, verification and manufacturing, announced that Samsung Electronics' Foundry business (Samsung Foundry) has successfully taped out its first 32-nanometer (nm) system-on-chip (SoC) design using Synopsys' Galaxy™ Implementation Platform. Samsung Foundry selected the Galaxy Implementation Platform as one of its implementation solutions for its mobile application processor because the platform's seamless integration enabled them to meet timing while minimizing power consumption and adhering to the tighter design and manufacturing constraints imposed by a 32nm process. In addition, significant productivity benefits were achieved using In-Design Physical Verification. Staying within the cohesive design environment of the Galaxy platform saved time and enabled Samsung Foundry to tape out on schedule.

In-Design technology provides a productivity boost over traditional flows by enabling physical verification during the physical design. The traditional approach of first implementing then verifying the design leads to many iterations between physical verification and implementation, which can result in significant schedule delays. Synopsys' integration of IC Validator within IC Compiler allowed Samsung Foundry to optimize metal fills that were timing-aware and of signoff quality. The new approach saved time by avoiding unnecessary data transfers and eliminating costly iterations while producing a clean, error-free layout.

Samsung Foundry deployed the Synopsys DC Ultra™ synthesis solution with topographical technology and the DesignWare® Library to accurately predict performance of the design during synthesis. The tight integration within the Galaxy platform reduced iterations between synthesis and layout. The IC Compiler MCMM capability was employed by Samsung Foundry to optimize across several scenarios while the Zroute technology within IC Compiler was used to generate DRC clean wires. Samsung Foundry used the PrimeTime® SI timing analysis solution together with accurate extraction from StarRC™ to analyze implications of on-chip variation and reduced wire spacing.
