APPROVAL: GCF approves the Samsung GT-I5800 & GT-I5801 Android Smartphones [UPDATE] Tweet

Apple hates Flash. Adobe “loves” Apple. Apple hates Android. And now, yes, Android loves Flash.

It’s widely expected that Google will unveil the latest version of Android, 2.2 (codenamed “Froyo“), at Google I/O which starts on Wednesday. The update is promising big things including huge performance improvements, tethering, and the ability to create your own WiFi hotspots with your phone. Another huge feature is expected to be the integration of Flash 10.1, a version finally optimized to run on mobile devices. And Google is apparently going to be highlighting the feature the moment you update to 2.2.

From what we hear, Android users with phones eligible for the 2.2 upgrade (Nexus One, Droid, and soon, HTC Evo) will be greeted with a link to an Adobe Mobile website after the upgrade. This page will give you the option to “View Flash enabled websites” or “Get Adobe products.” If you click on the first link, you’ll get a full list of sites Adobe is featuring that take advantage of Flash 10.1. These sites include Sony Pictures, Warner Brothers, BBC, Google Finance, and a whole range of others.

In fact, the list of sites is already live for both the Nexus One and the Droid. What’s odd is that the list is different depending on what device you’re using (Droid shows many fewer sites). I have no idea why that is, but maybe that will change before the launch.

Adobe’s Mobile page also lists sites enabled for Flash on the Palm Pre. And, humorously, has a page for the iPhone which has a “Get apps” link rather than a “View Flash enabled websites” link.

This list seems to be a direct response to Apple’s list of sites that are optimized to run on the iPad — meaning, they don’t use Flash. It’s an obvious thing for Adobe to do, but the most interesting aspect is that Google will apparently promote it. Clearly, they believe Flash support will be a big selling point of Android phones versus iPhones. And Google is also working with Adobe to bake Flash into its Chrome browser (and yet, soon Chrome OS too).

In case it wasn’t clear, the war between Google and Apple is on. And Google is moving fast to ensure that Adobe is one of its soldiers.

Verizon Says 4G Phones Are Coming In May 2011 Tweet

Verizon Wireless is working to quickly build a 4G wireless network, but it can’t beat Sprint (NYSE: S), which is launching its first 4G phone on June 4.

Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam said at the Reuters Global Technology Summit in New York that the company won’t be ready to launch phones until May 2011. At that time, it envisions having at least five 4G handsets available. He said the phones will likely be from Motorola (NYSE: MOT), HTC, LG (SEO: 066570) and RIM (NSDQ: RIMM). In the meantime, many of those same players with the addition of Samsung, will build tablets, running Google’s Android software, that could be ready as soon as the fourth quarter.

Both Verizon and Sprint will have to convince consumers to bite on the new gadgets despite far inferior coverage maps. By the fourth quarter, Verizon hopes to cover 100 million people in 25 to 30 markets including New York City. Right now, Sprint’s partner Clearwire (NSDQ: CLWR) has built a 4G network in 32 markets and has many more on its way in the remainder of 2010.

Virgin Media to offer HTC Wildfire Tweet

Latest smartphone set for Q3.

Virgin Media has confirmed that it will be carrying the upcoming HTC Wildfire – the cheaper alternative to the HTC Desire and HTC Legend.

With HTC's Desire and Legend already flying off the shelves, the arrival of the Wildfire – a lower cost version which has much of the same functionality with lower specs – will no doubt prove popular.

The HTC Wildfire has a UK release date for the Virgin Media network of the third quarter of this year, with pricing and tariff information not yet available.

Pricing to come

"Virgin Media would like to announce that the hot new Android handset, the HTC Wildfire, will be available from Virgin Media," said Virgin Media's press release.

"The handset is due out in Q3, and we'll update as soon as we can with tariff information, which as usual will include exclusive benefits for Virgin Media customers."

The HTC Wildfire is very much aimed at the social media loving generations, and the lower cost may well make it an attractive option for students.

Google’s Grab of the Week: Android Video Chat-Maker Global IP Solutions Tweet

It has been nearly three weeks since Google bought a company. You didn’t think it was done buying, did you?

So here’s Global IP Solutions, which specializes in Internet voice and video chat. Google plans to buy the publicly traded company, which began life in Sweden and now hails from San Francisco, for $68 million.

As PaidContent notes, it’s fairly easy to see why Google (GOOG) would be interested in the company: Last month, GIPS announced a product that makes it easy for developers to integrate voice and video chat with Android apps.

GIPS will be Google’s 15th publicly disclosed buy since last summer, assuming there’s no On2-like drama with the deal. Google’s offer represents a 26 percent premium over the current trading price for GIPS and a 140 percent premium since the company announced it was playing footsie with a potential buyer back in January.

There have not been much talk about the new Sony Smart TV, but here is something NewTeevee found while searching the Google Patent data base. The new Television that is said to be Android powered, and come with a special Android app store with its own TV application might have talked to the FCC over a year ago. This patent application was filled by Sony for a “network media player with user-generated playback control.” That name sounds a little similar to their latest Android powered TV that should be announced soon. The information provided in the patent is plentiful, and I got a lot out of it.

From what I read, the Android powered TV is planned to be able to bring all your media players into one and allow you to play your movies from cable, satellite, online, and more all in one place.

“(A) user may create a Cliff note version of the recent Super Bowl game footage to tailor such footage… For example, one user may tailor the footage so that only the “snaps” for the entire game are included within the Cliff note version. In this way, the user can view the entire series of plays within the game without all the extraneous material unrelated to such plays. Thereafter, other users can access this version or Cliff note of the media and amend it to their needs or desires.”

They even talk of a way users could add their own graphics on top of a recorded videos.

“User-generated overlays can be used to create custom playback of content. For example, a user could overlay a frame image, add a ticket bar, place a logo in the corner of the screen, add a sound track, or perform any other overlay function.”

This information is great, but still leaves us wondering what Google and their friends have in under Eric’s sleeves.

Gameloft Sidesteps Android Market for Mobile Assassin’s Creed, HAWX Tweet

Unlike iPhone users, owners of Android smart phones aren’t tied to a single app store.

On Monday, mobile game publisher Gameloft made 10 of its Android games available directly through its website, bypassing the need to use Google’s Android Market.

The games, which run on Android handsets like the Motorola Droid, HTC Desire and Nexus One, include versions of Ubisoft games like Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. as well as mobile platform hits like Asphalt 5 and Let’s Golf.

Buying games direct from the source requires users to do a little bit of tweaking: In order to grab and install apps and games from outside the Android Market, users must change their phone’s settings to accept downloads from “unknown sources.”

Gameloft vice president of publishing Baudouin Corman told Wired.com in an email that the company feels that Android is still in the “early stages” of game distribution, and that it wants to test multiple avenues to find the optimal system to get consumers their games.

“We have supported Android from the very beginning,” he said, citing the 30 different games that Gameloft has released on the platform so far.

Last year, another Gameloft executive said that the company had “significantly cut (its) investment in Android platforms.” Corman insists that Gameloft is committed to Android phones.

But Google still has a long way to go before Android becomes the gaming gold mine that the iPhone has been.

This isn’t the first time Gameloft has experimented with offering games for Android phones outside of Google’s Android Market. Prior to Monday, a handful of games like Oregon Trail to 1 vs 100 have been available via direct download from Gameloft.

But when I visited Gameloft’s webstore with my Droid, I had a heck of a time figuring out how to pay my three bucks for Oregon Trail. I hope making the payment process more clear is part of Gameloft’s plans.

Next iPhone may get display upgrade Tweet

New leak suggests Apple will source higher-resolution display tech from LG for next-gen mobile phone screen.

A new leak out of Vietnam suggests that the next version of the iPhone (expected to be released this summer) may contain a higher-resolution display than found in the current model, the iPhone 3GS.

The new display looks like it may be an IPS-type screen -- that is, "In-Plane Switching" technology, a type of display that is often found in high-quality desktop screens -- sourced from LG, and supporting a resolution up to 960 by 640 pixels; Higher than the Droid (at 854 by 480), Nexus One (at 800 by 400), and the iPhone 3G (at 320 by 480).

Additionally, it may include FFS ("Fringe Field Switching") technology created by PrimeView, which would allow for better visibility when you use your iPhone outdoors.

If these reports are accurate, the next iPhone looks like it may significantly raise the stakes for handset media playback, Apple's original target for the iPhone, by including a display that approaches HD quality.

Rumors of a higher-resolution iPhone screen first surfaced in March, when prominent blogger John Gruber hinted at it in a short blog post.

iPhone 4.0 screen details leaked Tweet

The next-generation iPhone will have an all new display with huge improvements on resolution and readability, according to a DigiTimes report.

The Taipei-based tech newspaper has been pumping anonymous sources within the Taiwanese components industry (the most likely source of the new iPhone’s innards) for details about the new phone’s display. It sounds pretty special to us.

Compared to the latest crop of AMOLED Android phones, the iPhone’s 48ox320 screen was looking a bit tired and grainy but DigiTimes’ source claims that the new phone will have a screen running at a brilliant 960×640. This is better than even the most high-end of the Androids,which can stretch to 854×480. The screen will also use a technique known as Fringe Field Switching to allow much wider viewing angles and improve visibility in bright sunlight. This last bit will be of particular not to anyone who has tried to use an AMOLED screen outdoors.

The screen will also be around 33% thinner than on previous models, apparently as a way of allowing a bigger battery to get around increased power usage.
