Stolen HTC Wildfire prototype shows up on Marketplace Tweet

In a break with HTC Netherlands, early this month a new Wildfire stolen. The device demonstrated for some days to be offered on Marketplace. The description can be concluded that it is a prototype.

The Wildfire was recently announced by HTC and features a Qualcomm MSM7225 processor with a clock speed of 528MHz. Although the unit has not officially been introduced in the Netherlands, there is already a copy on Marketplace offered.

HTC prototype Wildfire Marketplace on the advertisement was placed on May 25 and now over five hundred times. From the - fuzzy - in the ad photos can be seen that the conscious design features a trackball. This is remarkable because the consumer version of the Wildfire does not have a trackball.

Enquiries from HTC confirms the Android device a prototype, which previously had a break in the Dutch office has been stolen. In that burglary were also some HD2's included. Whether there are other time prototypes are stolen, HTC will not say. The manufacturer would like to say that the police theft report was made. It is not known whether HTC response to the advertisement has included contact with Marketplace.

The Wildfire is from July in the Netherlands for sale for 259 euros. Apart from the Qualcomm processor, the smartphone has a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash. Additionally, 384MB RAM and 512MB storage memory. The screen has a diagonal of 3.2 "and a resolution of 320x240 pixels. It also has GPS, Bluetooth 2.1 and UMTS with HSDPA on board.

Dell Streak on sale this Friday, free on tariff, £429 full price Tweet

The Dell Streak will be free on any tariff worth £25 or more according to Carphone Warehouse. The Streak can also be purchased for £35 per month with unlimited data, or bought at full price for £429.

The Streak has had an on-again-off-again relationship, appearing in several leaks and then disappearing again without any concrete mention of when it would be available. According to an announcement from UK retailer Carphone Warehouse, the Streak will go on sale on Friday, June 4th.

Dell’s mondophone features a 5-inch touchscreen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and a customized version of Android 1.6 that makes it more suited to take advantage of the device’s large size. The Streak is a phone stuffed into a MID or a tablet downsized into a phone depending on how you look at it. UK consumers will be among the first to officially purchase the device and decide for themselves.

S.Korea KT to offer Google's Nexus One smartphone Tweet

SEOUL - KT (030200.KS), South Korea's top fixed-line operator and No. 2 mobile carrier, said on Monday it would offer Google's (GOOG.O) Nexus One smartphone from late June, building on its success with Apple's (AAPL.O) iPhone.

As mobile operators pin big hopes on smartphones to boost wireless data usage and revenue, KT has enjoyed an early lead with iPhone's popularity and its own broad WiFi network.

But it faces growing competition from bigger mobile rival SK Telecom (017670.KS), which is expected to gain on a smartphone drive with Android phones, especially from Samsung Electronics (005930.KS).

South Korean smartphone users jumped to about 2 million at end-May from just 200,000 in June last year, according to KT.

To maintain the smartphone momentum, KT has to continue bringing in successful devices and strengthening its network and software support, while dealing with government moves to cap telecom companies' marketing spending.

KT CEO Lee Suk-chae said the company planned to set up a company to sell and lease mobile WiMAX telecom equipment jointly with Samsung Electronics, Intel Corp (INTC.O) and financial investors.

The new company, expected to be launched in August with 320 billion won ($268 million) in capital, will provide WiMAX gear for KT's coverage expansion for the high-speed wireless Internet.

KT is also working to introduce mobile WiMAX business in South America and Africa, Lee said.

"We will continue to invest in WiFi and Wibro (mobile WiMAX) networks to build on our leading position in networks," Lee told a news conference.

"We will also target global markets with smart technologies," he said, referring to network technologies used in building energy-saving power grid and other advanced infrastructure.

KT has made no decision on whether or when it will introduce Apple's next iPhone model, Pyo Hyun-myung, mobile business group president, told the conference.

If Google told you to jump off a cliff, would you? Tweet

A Utah woman used Google Maps' walking directions on her Blackberry and was given directions to walk onto a highway. She got hit and is now suing Google for damages.

You know those warning labels on those chemical packets that come in new shoes that say 'do not eat'? Have you ever wondered why they have to print something so stupidly obvious?

Enter Lauren Rosenberg of Park City, Utah. She used Google Maps on her Blackberry to get walking directions from one part of town to another. Part of those direction included walking on a road without sidewalks called Deer Valley Drive, aka Utah State Route 224.

According to court documents, instead of finding a different route or walking safely away from traffic, she walked into the street and was (surprise!) struck by a car. Now she's suing Google for in excess of $100,000.

Defendant Google, through its "Google Maps" service provided Plaintiff Lauren Rosenberg with walking directions that led her out onto Deer valley Drive, a.k.a. State Route 224, a rural highway with no sidewalks, and a roadway that exhibits motor vehicles traveling at high speeds, that is not reasonably safe for pedestrians.

The Defendant Google expects uses of the walking map site to rely on the accuracy of the walking directions given….

As a direct and proximate cause of Defendant Google's careless, reckless, and negligent providing of unsafe directions, Plaintiff Laren Rosenberg was led onto a dangerous highway, and was thereby stricken by a motor vehicle…

This reminds me of something my parents used to tell me when I was younger and blamed someone else for my mistakes. They'd say "If Google told you to jump off a cliff, would you do it?"

Except I was a kid. And if I was told to walk onto a highway, I would have passed.

As Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land points out, if you do a walking directions search from a desktop or laptop, you get one of those "Don't eat this packet of chemical stones" warnings:

Walking directions are in beta. Use caution – This route may be missing sidewalks or pedestrian paths.

Microsoft's Bing has a similar warning when mapping the same path:

Caution, this route may be missing sidewalks or other pedestrian paths.

The problem is that you only get 320x480 pixels on a Blackberry screen (if you are lucky) and if Google needed to put warnings on its Maps pages, there'd hardly be any room for a map.

Instead, Google has to rely on people using common sense and lessons they learned in kindergarten – at least until their maps become 'fool proof'.

Nokia Launches New Symbian-based Nokia X6 in Korea Tweet

Nokia announced it will release a new Symbian-based smartphone, the Nokia X6 for KT customers in early June. Targeting music-savvy users, the Nokia X6 is offering up to 35 hours of music playtime. This will allow music lovers to play their favorite music whenever and wherever they want with a user-friendly interface and an inbox headset, the company said.

This is the third Nokia smartphone for the Korean market following the Nokia 6210 and Nokia 5800 Express Music. The Nokia X6 is aimed at the mid-end market with a reasonable price tag, 595,000 Korean won including V.A.T.

The Nokia X6 sports a 3.2-inch display with 16:9 wide-screen and is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics.

The music phone allows users have up to 20 of their friends on the home screen and users can stay in contact with their closest friends by utilizing the Contacts bar and see-in-one-glance the latest email, texts and calls.

Nvidia CEO: Hardware Makers Uniting Behind Android Tweet

Hardware makers will unite behind Google's Android as the primary operating system for tablet computers, according to Nvidia's CEO.

Tablets are shaping up to be one of the highlights of the annual Computex show in Taipei, where hardware makers are showing off their latest products and prototypes. Most manufacturers are expected to show off tablets, with some designed to run Android and others Windows. But Windows isn't the best choice for a tablet, said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO at Nvidia.

"Windows is too big and it's too full featured for smartbooks and tablets," Huang said, speaking with reporters in Taipei on Monday. Smartbook is a term used to describe low-cost laptops containing processors designed by Arm instead of x86 chips from Intel or Advanced Micro Devices.

"The good news is that we finally have an operating system to unite behind. Android is an operating system that has gained a tremendous amount of momentum all over the world," Huang said.

Android was originally developed with cell phones in mind but computer makers wasted no time putting it to use in other devices. Several hardware makers showed off netbooks running the OS at Computex last year. In addition, Acer shipped a version of its Aspire One netbook that came with Windows XP and Android installed.

"Android has become the fastest growing mobile operating system in the world and, in fact, it has surpassed the iPhone in terms of growth and in terms of users," he said.

The iPad's success proved there is widespread demand for tablets and set the bar high for rivals. Apple sold 1 million iPads during the first four weeks it was on sale, winning praise from users for its sleek and intuitive user interface, as well as its long battery life. Matching Apple's success won't be easy and will require modifications to optimize Android for tablets.

"Andy Rubin and his team [at Google] know exactly where the industry needs to go. Android started out as a phone but it's not lost on them that the tablet is going to be very important and that the Android operating system has to evolve, and be enhanced in certain capabilities, in order to be a good tablet operating system," Huang said, citing graphics performance as one area where Android needs to be improved to match the iPad.

Nvidia has a vested interest in seeing the tablet market take off. The company is selling its own Arm-based processor, called Tegra 2, that's designed for tablets. The chip combines a dual-core Arm processor, a graphics processor, and other components on a single piece of silicon. While tablets based on Tegra 2 have yet to hit the market, they will go on sale before the end of this year.

"I think we'll have to wait until this fall. The operating systems are coming together, the devices are coming together," Huang said.

(1) This software upgrade is a newer version than what is currently installed on your phone. If it is the same version and your phone is operating normally, there is no need to reinstall the software.

To check what version is installed on your phone, press Home > Menu > Settings > About phone > Build number, and note the Build number.

(2) HTC Sync has been installed on your PC. HTC Sync can be found on the MicroSD card that was shipped with your phone. You can also download and install HTC Sync at www.htc.com/www/support/

(3) Your phone is connected to your PC using a USB cable. The PC must recognize your phone. You will see a sync icon HTC Sync Icon.bmp in the taskbar once the phone has been connected.

(4) Standby and hibernation mode on your PC has been disabled.

(5) Close all running applications on the PC.

(6) The Screen unlock pattern has been disabled, press Home > Menu > Settings > Security and uncheck Require pattern

(7) Make sure that the battery level of the phone is at least 30% (at least 3 green blocks). To check the battery level, tap Home > Menu > Settings > About phone > Status > Battery level.

(8) Once the RUU is downloaded, launch the application on your PC and follow the instructions on screen.

'Movistar unveils Ivy low-cost Android phone with Huawei' Tweet

Movistar, in partnership with Huawei, will launch a low-cost Android-powered handset. Dubbed Ivy, the Huawei U8100 device is produced by Huawei, and enables HSDPA mobile broadband access at speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps.
