Tips for open Registry Editor that locked by virus

Saturday, April 10, 2010

After previous article how to restore files or folders are hidden by the virus, sometimes a virus that attacks the computer, often locking Registry Editor. Why should the Registry Editor are first key to open? As we know, most viruses will be locked important tools in the windows system, such as Task Manager, Folder options, the Control Panel, CMD and other tools. The viruses locked important tools in windows system for not easy to be erased. Meanwhile to restore the Task Manager, Folder options, Control Panel or CMD, we have to change settings in the registry editor. If the registry editor are locked, how can we solve this problem?

Seeing the above problems, then the first time we have to do is to re-activate registry editor which is locked by a virus. How can I do? I have a practical steps to open the registry editor that locked by a virus. I use VB Script or VBS. Maybe many peoples ask why I use a VB Script because there are have other ways such as using a Registration Entries (reg) or Command Prompt to open the Registry Editor. I once tried using Registration Entries (reg) and Command Prompt to open the Registry Editor but could not open the registry editor and when I use the reg file appears a message "Registry editing has disabled by your administartor".

But, when I use the VB Script that message does not appear and the Registry Editor that locked by a virus can I open. To create a VB Script, we can make it with Notepad, and here is the steps to create a VB Script with the Notepad to open the Registry Editor that locked by viruses.
  • Open Notepad, you can type "Notepad" in Run menu (Without the quotes)
  • In Notepad window, type the following command:
    dim b
    set b = createObject ("WScript.Shell")
    PolSys = "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\"
    rdw = "REG_DWORD"
    b.Regwrite PolSys & "DisableRegistryTools", "0", rdw
  • And then Save with menu File> Save As
  • In Save As window, select All Files in the Save As Type option and give the extension ". vbs" to name the file. For example give the file name "EnableRegedit.vbs". Click OK for save and close Notepad.
Now, you have a VB Script file for opening Registry Editor that locked by virus. You just double click for open VB Script file and for open Registry Editor type "regedit" in Run Menu. If the Registry Editor can't open, please correct the notepad command above. I hope tips for open Registry Editor that locked by viruses above usefull for us. If you have any questions about tips for open Registry Editor that locked by virus, please send in comment form.

Sony Ericsson Elm review: Green roots

Gsmarena have posted their review of the Sony Ericsson Elm. Here are the phone's key features, main disadvantages and final impression.

Key features:
* 2.2" 256K-color TFT screen, 240 x 320 pixels
* Quad-band GSM support
* Dual-band 3G with 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 2Mbps HSUPA
* 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash; geotagging, face detection; VGA@30fps video recording
* Built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS; Trial version of Wisepilot navigation software
* Wi-Fi with DLNA
* FM radio with RDS
* Stereo Bluetooth 2.1
* microSD card slot, 280 MB internal memory
* Eco-friendly package and materials
* Social networking integration, widget enhanced interface
* NetFront v3.5 web browser with full Flash support
* Splash-resistant body
* Noise cancellation
* Excellent audio quality

Main disadvantages:
* No standard USB port
* No bundled data cable or memory card
* No 3.5mm audio jack
* Kinda short Wi-Fi receiver range
* No DivX/XviD video support
* No document viewer
* No xenon flash
* No camera lens cover
* Feeble loudspeaker
* No video streaming over Wi-Fi
* Expensive navigation after the trial period expires

By this point it must be pretty clear that the Sony Ericsson Elm is a reasonably attractive package. Rich functionality comes in a well built shell and the potent user interface has done well to be in step with the times. Things get even sweeter if you happen to like the human-curvature design. And we need to say it straight – it’s not a gimmick, ergonomics are excellent.

So if you haven’t been caught in the touchscreen wave, the Sony Ericsson Elm is certainly worth a look when choosing your next phone. The social network integration and the top connectivity options don’t make it a smartphone but are certainly nice to have. Imaging is good enough to let the Elm take advantage of some of that Cybershot nostalgia.

To give you a better idea of the good value for money the Sony Ericsson Elm offers, we’ll take a look at several of its competitors that cost roughly the same.

The Nokia 6700 classic is possibly quite a threat. The slim metal-clad handset is a close match for imaging but fails in the connectivity department for the lack of WLAN. On the other hand if smart is your game, the Nokia N79 is a S60 3rd Symbian smartphone that can deliver.

Of course if you are happy with the Sony Ericsson Elm, but just wish for a bigger screen, the Sony Ericsson Hazel slider-twin is the way to go. It offers basically the same package but the slider form factor has made more room for the display. However, this will probably mean a slightly higher asking price too.

Finally if you are still sitting on a fence regarding touchscreen, you might want to take a look at some of the low-end smartphones out there. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and the HTC Tattoo are slightly more expensive and obviously lesser cameraphones too, but offer full-touch control and larger screens (not to mention the full-featured smartphone capabilities).

As you see, the Sony Ericsson Elm is among the solid offerings in this price range, fully capable of standing its ground against the competition. Plus, it carries the GreenHeart logo and the eco-friendly vibe to give you a nice warm feeling inside. GreenHeart has still a long way to go to reach Cybershot or Walkman, but the Elm is one step closer.

Google Android Leads Leap in Smartphone Use, comScore Says

Google's Android operating system soared to 9 percent market share from December 2009 through February 2010, buoyed by strong sales for the Motorola Droid from Verizon Wireless. ComScore said smartphone use grew 21 percent from December 2009 through February 2010, with some 45.4 million people using handsets with full HTML Web browsers in the U.S. Microsoft lost 4 percent OS market share, which could point to where Google's 5.2 percent share gain came from. Palm also lost share, dipping from 7.2 percent share through November 2009 to 5.4 percent share through February 2010.

Smartphone use grew 21 percent from December 2009 through February 2010, with some 45.4 million people using handsets with full HTML Web browsers in the United States, according to new statistics from comScore.

Google's Android operating system was the chief beneficiary of this growth spurt, rising to 9 percent market share from 3.8 percent from September 2009 through November 2009. That 5.2 percentage point gain was spurred by Verizon Wireless' successful November launch of the Motorola Droid.

Verizon backed that Android 2.0 device with a $100 million marketing campaign, which enabled the carrier to sell hundreds of thousands of Droids during the holidays.

HTC's Droid Eris joined the Droid from Verizon, while Sprint's HTC Hero and Samsung's Moment joined the Android party for the holidays.
Resource Library:

Android's growth was great, but the platform still stands a distant fourth in the smartphone market. Research In Motion is the dominant leader, with 42 percent of the market, followed by Apple's iPhone at 25.4 percent and Microsoft Windows Mobile, which garnered 15 percent share.

Microsoft lost 4 percent OS market share from December 2009 through February 2010, which could point to where Google's 5.2 percent share gain came from. Palm also lost share, dipping from 7.2 percent share to 5.4 percent share over the same period.

ComScore also tracked content consumption on mobile phones and found that 18 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used social networking Websites such as Facebook and Twitter from December 2009 through February 2010, up from 15.1 percent in the three-month period through November 2009.

Some 29.4 percent of subscribers used a Web browser, up 2.4 percent from 27 percent over the same period a year ago. The increased Web browser and social networking use proves that Web content consumption is seeing solid growth, no doubt a sign of the improved Internet experience of today's handsets, particularly smartphones.

Text messaging to other phones, use of downloaded apps, gaming and music on mobile phones all saw growth from U.S. mobile subscribers over the time frame comScore tracked.

Meanwhile, Nielsen posted its own smartphone study April 5, noting that 21 percent of American wireless subscribers are using a smartphone as of the fourth quarter 2009, compared with 19 percent in the third quarter 2009 and 14 percent at the end of 2008.

"We are just at the beginning of a new wireless era where smartphones will become the standard device consumers will use to connect to friends, the Internet and the world at large," wrote Nielsen analyst Roger Entner.

The analyst added that the share of smartphones as a proportion of overall device sales has increased to 29 percent for phone purchasers in the last six months, with 45 percent of respondents to a Nielsen survey claiming that their next device will be a smartphone.

"If we combine these intentional data points with falling prices and increasing capabilities of these devices along with an explosion of applications for devices, we are seeing the beginning of a groundswell," Entner said. "This increase will be so rapid that by the end of 2011 Nielsen expects more smartphones in the U.S. market than feature phones."

Apple Readies iPhone 0S 4.0 Release for Summer 2010

Device management, multitasking and a unified inbox for e-mail are expected to make Apple's iPhone OS 4.0 release a must for corporate users. The iPhone 3G and the second-generation iPad Touch will be able to run the new OS. However, earlier generation iPhones are not capable of running the new version, according to Apple officials.

CUPERTINO, Calif.—Apple’ iPhone 4.0 OS that the company introduced to analysts, developers and reporters on April 8 will have an assortment of features designed to appeal to corporate users, besides the long-desired multitasking capability.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs, accompanied by the company’s senior vice president for iPhone software, Scott Forstall, and senior vice president for worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller, pulled the wraps off the next version of Apple's operating system for mobile devices today at an invitation-only event on the company’s campus here. Apple expects to release the OS update for iPhones this summer, followed by general availability for the iPad in the fall.

Multitasking has been at the front of the queue for Apple mobile devices, and this most anticipated feature of the refreshed mobile OS will be available for users with the company’s iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iterations of the iPod Touch.
Resource Library:

The earlier iPhone 3G and second-generation iPad Touch will be able to run the new OS, but according to Jobs, the hardware on the older devices simply isn’t capable of supporting the OS’ multitasking capabilities.

The OS update will also allow users to organize their mobile applications into folders, the names of which will default to the applications’ App Store category name; users are free to rename these folders and to manage them on their connected computers using iTunes 9.2. Jobs noted that this will allow users to display more than 2,000 applications on their iPhones, which currently has a practical limit of 180 displayed applications.

A unified inbox for mail will also be featured in iPhone OS 4.0, enabling users to track e-mail conversation threads or sort e-mails by their source account. The company is adding support for Microsoft’s Exchange Server 2010 with the update, and will allow the use of multiple Exchange accounts.

But there are additional features in this version of the iPhone OS that will be valuable to the company’s enterprise customers. First of all, the OS update will include new security features that allow the use of longer and more complex device passcodes; the new iPhone OS will use that passcode as an encryption key for mail messages and attachments that are stored on a device.

Wireless distribution of in-house and proprietary applications will be possible with this release. Meanwhile, a device management system is to be introduced that will allow the use of third-party servers to configure and query iPhones over a wireless connection, or if desired, to lock or wipe a managed device that’s strayed from its intended user.

Apple’s announcement included the unveiling of iAd, the company’s advertising platform for mobile devices. Developers will receive 60 percent of the revenue from advertisements that appear with their applications, while Apple will provide space sales and ad hosting. Ads from the iAd service will be capable of full-screen video and interactive ad content, with the caveat that HTML 5 is the only supported format.

The advantage to this scheme over conventional mobile advertising deployments, Jobs explained, is that currently, advertising takes users out of an app and into a Web browser. Instead, iAd takes advantage of the multitasking features of iPhone OS 4.0, displaying content without closing down the source application, and allowing users to return to their place in the source application without missing a beat.

As part of the April 8 announcement, Apple released a beta version of iPhone OS 4.0 and its associated SDK; the beta software and SDK are available at Apple's developer support site for registered members of the company’s iPhone Developer Program.

Smartphones to Overtake Feature Phones in U.S. by 2011

The iPhone, Blackberry, Droid and smartphones in general dominate the buzz in the mobile market, but only 21% of American wireless subscribers are using a smartphone as of the fourth quarter 2009 compared to 19% in Q3 2009 and 14% at the end of 2008. We are just at the beginning of a new wireless era where smartphones will become the standard device consumers will use to connect to friends, the internet and the world at large. The Smartphone User
Slightly more males than females are getting smartphones (53% versus 47%) which is what we would expect for technical early adopter products. In terms of demographics, Hispanic Americans and Asians are slightly more likely to have a smartphone than what their share of population would indicate, which is a trend we see in the adoption of other mobile data services. While smartphones started out in the business segment, two-third of today’s buyers of smartphones are personal users.

Loyalty
In the last six months, roughly 77% of new smartphone buyers remained loyal to their wireless operator, while 18% switched to a new provider to get their new smartphone with the remaining percentage made up of first-time smartphone buyers. Interestingly enough, the percentage of people who switched carriers and got a new smartphone is not higher than that of the average wireless subscriber.
smartphone-loyalty

This indicates that the portfolio of the wireless carriers in general is robust enough to prevent any wide-spread smartphone flight from one carrier to the other, with very few exceptions. The added bonus for wireless carriers is that smartphone owners are significantly more satisfied (81%) with their device than feature phone owners (66%).

Features, features, features
Smartphones show higher application usage than feature phones even at the basic built-in application level. During Nielsen’s Mobile Insights survey we asked the respondents about features they’ve used in the last 30 days. The good news for the smartphone market is that people are actually taking advantage of the device capabilities.

The percentage of people who use their phone for only voice communications drops from 14% among new feature phone owners to 3% of smartphone owners. The use of the built-in camera and video capability jumps by almost 20% for both categories, due to the generally better quality and user friendliness of the features. Smartphones also often have a better speaker which translates into more frequent usage from about half of feature phone owners to about two-thirds of smartphone owners. Not surprisingly the use of Wi-Fi increases 10-fold from 5% for feature phone owners to 50% for smartphone users to satisfy the need for fast downloads.

# Android phone app downloads 'to hit 800 million in 2010

More than 800 million Android apps will be downloaded this year, according to market researchers.

The total of apps downloaded in 2009 was 2.4 billion, but ABI anticipates that a surge in demand in coming months will send the number of software downloads since the store opened beyond six billion before the end of 2010.

However, despite the growth of the Android Market, Google's software market is not expected to dethrone the iPhone's App Store quite yet, the company forecasts.

Smartphones are becoming increasingly popular among consumers because of the app phenomenon and the company forecasts that Samsung's Bada and Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Series will help in further boosting the global app market.

The average price of apps is on a downward slope and ABI predicts that revenues from sales will peak in the next two years before falling as competition increases.

"As competition heats up, app makers are both dropping prices and 'going free' to stay on top of the download charts," said ABI's Jake Saunders.

Mr Saunders also expects to see in-app advertising supporting the industry to a greater degree in the coming years.

Multi-process Firefox Lorentz beta now available for download

As expected, Mozilla has released the first Firefox beta featuring out of process plugins (OOPP), or plugins running on their own process, so if one crashes it won’t take down all your Firefox session. Instead, the plugin is replaced with a dark image notifying the plugin crash, and display a link you can click on to try to reload the plugin.

FoxitReader plugin crash

The feature has been ready for about two months, and in the latest days Mozilla has been ironing stability bugs, and back porting it from the trunk (main development repository), to the Namoroka branch (Firefox 3.6.x).

Right now, it only runs QuickTime, Flash, and Silverlight on their own process, but you can also manually add other plugins via about:config.

For example to have the Adobe Reader plugin running on its own process, create a boolean preference in about:config, name it dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.nppdf32.dll, set it to true, and restart. For Java, the preference must be named dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npjp2.dll. You just need to know the name of the library (which you get from about:plugins), and create the preference accordingly.

Conversely, you can disable OOPP for specific plugins (even enabled by default ones) by setting their respective preference to false.

Remember, however, that there is a reason for not running all plugins on their own process, so be prepared to turn back if things get unstable.

Also, realize that there is a memory hit when running plugins on their own process. I made a simple test running Firefox with four YouTube videos playing in separate tabs for about one minute. I found Firefox took around 220MB and 240MB (firefox.exe + mozilla-runtime.exe processes) when running Flash running in-process and out of process respectively, or about a 10% overhead. But I guess your mileage could vary significantly depending on the plugin and the actual content. Please feel free to share your results here.

Lorentz is the first outcome of Electrolysis, a major project that also aims to move Firefox user interface, and tabs to their own process for enhanced stability.

Final version of Lorentz is targeted as a minor update for Firefox (3.6.4 most likely) by May.

Check Mozilla’s Firefox Lorentz page to download and test it. Note that while there is a Mac OS X version available it doesn’t come with OOPP yet “because of architectural difference”, according the release notes.

WebKit2 - High Level Document ¶

WebKit2 is a new API layer for WebKit designed from the ground up to support a split process model, where the web content (JavaScript, HTML, layout, etc) lives in a separate process from the application UI. This model is very similar to what Google Chrome offers, with the major difference being that we have built the process split model directly into the framework, allowing other clients of WebKit to use it.
Why is it named WebKit2? ¶

The somewhat pedestrian reason is that it's an incompatible API change from the original WebKit, so it will probably be installed as something like /System/Library/WebKit2.framework on Mac.
C API ¶

WebKit2 will provide a stable C-based non-blocking API that is mostly platform agnostic. In order to achieve the goal of a non-blocking API, several techniques are used to make the API usable while still providing a comprehensive set of features to the embedder. These techniques include:

* Notification style client callbacks (e.g. didFinishLoadForFrame) These inform the embedder that something has happened, but do not give them the chance to do anything about it.
* Policy style clients callbacks (e.g. decidePolicyForNavigationAction) These allow the embedder to decide on an action at their leisure, notifying the page through a listener object.
* Policy settings (e.g. WKContextSetCacheModel, WKContextSetPopupPolicy) These allow the embedder to opt into a predefined policy without any callbacks into the UIProcess. These can either be an enumerated set of specific policies, or something more fine-grained, such as a list of strings with wildcards.
* Injected code (e.g. WebBundle) Code can be loaded into the WebProcess for cases where all the other options fail. This can useful when access to the DOM is required. [Planned, but not currently implemented]

The major API classes are:

WKContextRef

* Encapsulates all pages related to specific use of WebKit. All pages in this context share the same visited link set, local storage set, and preferences.

WKPageNamespaceRef

* Encapsulates all pages that can script each other.

WKPageRef

* Basic unit of browsing. Stays the same as the main frame changes.

WKView[Ref]

* Native view that hooks into the platform's toolkit. On Windows, this wraps a HWND. On the Mac, it inherits from NSView.

Note that the requirement to be fully non-blocking requires an incompatible API break - many features of most existing WebKit APIs cannot be fulfilled in a non-blocking manner. Since we needed the API break anyway, we also took advantage of the opportunity to clean up and simplify the API.
Port-Specific APIs ¶

We plan to build a fully non-blocking Objective-C API for Mac OS X as a wrapper on top of the C API. We believe a similar approach may be viable for other ports.

We are also not removing or obsoleting any of the existing port-specific APIs. WebCore will remain as-is, and all current APIs will continue to work and be fully supported. Thus, WebKit development and existing ports of WebKit will not be disrupted.
Process Architecture ¶

WebKit2 changes the WebKit stack to build a process management mechanism inside the WebKit API layer.

Here is what the architecture of a traditional WebKit port looks like:

mac-webkit-stack

Everything is in one process, and there is an API boundary between the application and the WebKit API. This is a simple model, and typically it's pretty easy for applications to reuse the WebKit API.

Here is what we are going for with WebKit2:

webkit2-stack

Notice that there is now a process boundary, and it sits *below* the API boundary. Part of WebKit operates in the UI process, where the application logic also lives. The rest of WebKit, along with WebCore and the JS engine, lives in the web process. The web process is isolated from the UI process. This can deliver benefits in responsiveness, robustness, security (through the potential to sandbox the web process) and better use of multicore CPUs. There is a straightforward API that takes care of all the process management details for you.
How is This Different from Chromium WebKit? ¶

Chromium takes a different approach to multiprocess:

Notice that in this case, the the process boundary is *above* the API boundary. Chromium WebKit does not directly provide a multiprocess framework, rather, it is optimized for use as a component of a multiprocess application, which does all the proxying and process management itself. The Chrome team at Google did a great job at trailblazing multiprocess browsing with Chrome. But it's difficult to reuse their work, because the critical logic for process management, proxying between processes and sandboxing is all part of the Chrome application, rather than part of the API layer. So if another WebKit-based application or another port wanted to do multiprocess based on Chromium WebKit, it would be necessary to reinvent or cut & paste a great deal of code.

That was an understandable choice for Google - Chrome was developed as a secret project for many years, and is deeply invested in this approach. Also, there are not any other significant API clients. There is Google Chrome, and then there is the closely related Chrome Frame.

WebKit2 has a different goal - we want process management to be part of what is provided by WebKit itself, so that it is easy for any application to use. We would like chat clients, mail clients, twitter clients, and all the creative applications that people build with WebKit to be able to take advantage of this technology. We believe this is fundamentally part of what a web content engine should provide.
Internals ¶

There are two key subsystems that support the process division :

* CoreIPC - an abstraction for general message passing, including event handling. The current implementations use mach messages on Mac OS X, and named pipes on Windows.
* DrawingArea - an abstraction for a cross-process drawing area. Multiple drawing strategies are possible, the simplest is just a shared memory bitmap.

There are two other important abstractions, which may be pushed down to WebCore or WTF over time:

* Run Loops
* Work Queues

Current Status ¶

WebKit2 should be considered an early technology demo. It is not yet production quality. But it's possible to try it out and see how it works at this early stage.
How to try it Out ¶

Use build-webkit --webkit2 on Mac OS X or Windows to build everything. WebKit2 will not work with the shipping version of Safari. Because WebKit2 is an incompatible API break, it requires a custom testbed to run it. A basic web browser application suitable for testing WebKit2 will be landed in the near future.

metal Detector for HTC HD2

supported devices
HTC HD2, nothing else!

How it works
The built-in compass uses the earth's magnetic field to calculate the deviation from magnetic north. As with every compass, if you put a piece of metal nearby, it gets deviated. Thats what i use here to detect metal.

Current status of this app
This is far from finished, but as we both are quite busy at the moment, we'd like to share the current beta of this app.

All gauges are fully functional. Clicking sound and vibration working too. You may turn them on/off using the corresponding buttons on the left.
To exit the app, use the lower right button.

The camera button has a new meaning as of v0.2.0.0:
It enables a test mode, where sensor readings are simulated. Use the sliders to advance the main/aux gauges

todo's we're aware of:
- artwork needs final polishing
- sliders do slide but have no effect whatsoever, temporarily used for debugging
- screenshot (camera) button switches debugging mode (this will change in a final release)
- detection algorithm still crappy
- sound and vibration status not saved on exit

Testing
Place your device flat on a surface. After starting the app, the gauge should show zero. If it doesnt, take your device and write a couple of "eights" in the air (this is to get rid of magnetism which might get stuck in the sensors).
Then use a pair of scissor or something the like and move it slowly to the right side of your device. At a distance of approx. 5 cm. the gauge should start to move. Take your device and move it with its right side near metals, and see if the gauge shows values.

Version history
v1.0
- detection algorithm improved (tilt compensation)
- sensitivity slider (red) now working
- continous ticking after app exit solved
- new app icon, thanks jaguaralani
- now uses HW accelerated opengl (problem with silvermoon solved, thanks Phippu)
v0.2
changed skin, added sound ticks and vibration
v0.1
first public release (alpha)

planned for future versions
DONE new skin
DONE sound ticks
DONE- vibration
- adjustable sensitivity and offset
- improved detection algorithm
- 3rd party skinning options
- save vibrate and sound settings
-additional skin:

This week in search 4/9/10

Here's what's happening this week in search:

Site speed in web search ranking
We made an announcement today about site speed and how it effects our search ranking algorithms. Check out the Webmaster Central blog for more information, including a number of free tools that you can use to increase the speed of your website.

Stars in mobile search
In early March, we announced stars in search, a feature that helps you mark and rediscover great content on the web. Recently, we extended this functionality to your mobile phone, so that you're able to view that same favorite content on the go. So, if you'd previously starred sites for [cheesecake recipe] when planning a meal at home, searching for [cheesecake recipe] on your phone in the supermarket will help you rediscover the recipe search results that looked enticing — no need to make a grocery list. Stars work both ways, so if you mark a search result while on your phone, you'll be able to see it later when you get to your desktop. This feature is currently supported on Android phones, iPhones/iPods and Palm WebOS devices in the U.S., and you need to be logged into your Google account for it to work.

Updates to Google Quick Scroll
In December we launched Google Quick Scroll, an extension for Chrome which uses Google's search capabilities to help you jump directly to the portion of the page that's relevant to your search query. Since December, we've brought Quick Scroll to all the languages and domains where Chrome extensions are available. We've also continued to make constant improvements to the tool, and recently we debuted a new version with a few useful updates.

Since Quick Scroll is all about getting you to information fast, it's important that it appear quickly. So we've reduced the time it takes for the tool to pop up so you don't have to wait as long. Also, if you've been using Quick Scroll for a while, you know that it doesn't appear for every result — just when Google detects that only a portion of the page is relevant to your query. Now, even if Quick Scroll doesn't appear after you click on a search result, an icon will show up in the address bar. Clicking on the icon will pop up the Quick Scroll box with an explanation of why it didn't trigger on that page.

Here's what it looks like:

Help for those who need it
A few months ago, we introduced a search feature that displays the toll-free U.S. poison control number when you search for related information. This got us thinking about other ways we can help people get clear information from Google search in times of crisis or distress. So we recently launched a feature that displays the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at the top of the results page for certain search queries in the U.S. We hope this quick access to information helps people in emotional distress who may benefit from calling a suicide prevention hotline.

Stay tuned for more updates next week.
