Google Says It’s Shipping 65,000 Android Phones Daily

Friday, May 14, 2010

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) feels it’s not getting credit for how strong sales of Android-powered phones are, so CEO Eric Schmidt is going on the offensive, telling shareholders that the company’s partners are shipping at least 65,000 handsets with the Google open-source operating system every day, according to AFP. Schmidt’s comments follow market researcher NPD’s report that the dozen or so Android-based smartphones have out-sold Apple’s one and only iPhone. In February, Schmidt said that 60,000 Android devices were being shipped each day.

The NPD report ranked RIM’s BlackBerry in the top spot with 36 percent market share, while Apple’s OS fell to third at 21 percent, placing Google’s Android in the middle with 28 percent. After announcing the latest figure highlighting Android’s place in the market, Schmidt complained that “if you check the blogosphere, you’ll discover there are some reports that that number might be quite low.” Nevertheless, the AFP article did not say if Schmidt discussed shipping numbers for Google’s own Nexus One handset.

Google is stressing the “openness” of its its system versus Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), which has recently come under fire for its tight control of what sort of software apps and websites can use on its iPhone and iPad devices. While Apple remains ahead in terms of the apps available for its device, Schmidt said the company is willing to be patient. “While it’s true that we’re very happy to give away Android, the applications and the services that can be provided on a very large, very broad framework can be enormously valuable over the next five or 10 years.”

Nexus One changes in availability

We launched Nexus One in January with two goals in mind: to introduce a beacon of innovation among Android handsets, and to make it quick and easy for people to buy an Android phone. We’re very happy with the adoption of Android in general, and the innovation delivered through Nexus One. Already, a lot of the innovation that went into creating Nexus One has found its way into numerous Android handsets, like the HTC Evo 4G from Sprint and the Verizon Droid Incredible by HTC.

But, as with every innovation, some parts worked better than others. While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not. It’s remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it’s clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from.

So today we’re announcing the following changes:

More retail availability. As we make Nexus One available in more countries we’ll follow the same model we’ve adopted in Europe, where we're working with partners to offer Nexus One to consumers through existing retail channels. We’ll shift to a similar model globally.

From retail to viewing. Once we have increased the availability of Nexus One devices in stores, we'll stop selling handsets via the web store, and will instead use it as an online store window to showcase a variety of Android phones available globally.

Innovation requires constant iteration. We believe that the changes we're announcing today will help get more phones to more people quicker, which is good for the entire Android ecosystem: users, partners and also Google.

Google Voice invites for students

We’ve found that Google Voice can be useful in many different ways to many different people. But one group of people that it’s especially well-suited for is students. We’ve heard college students in particular really appreciate getting their voicemail sent to their email, sending free text messages and reading voicemail transcriptions rather than listening to messages (especially handy while in class).

But since Google Voice is currently only available by invite, a lot of students are still listening to voicemail and sending text messages the old-fashioned way. As a recent college graduate, I can’t think of anything more painful! So starting today, we’ll be giving priority Google Voice invites to students. To get an invite, just visit google.com/voice/students and enter an email address that that ends in .edu.

So if you’re a student, submit your email address and a Google Voice invite will arrive in your inbox within 24 hours. Keep in mind that only one invite will be be sent per email address and Google Voice is currently only available in the U.S. And if you’re new to Google Voice, check out our introductory videos at youtube.com/googlevoice.

Sprint to launch WiMAX smartphone on 4 June

US operator Sprint Nextel has unveiled pricing and availability details for the HTC EVO, the industry’s first major WiMAX smartphone. The high-profile device will be available from June 4 for US$199.99 with a two-year contract. The device features Android’s 2.1 operating system, dual cameras (an 8 MP camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3 MP camera), HDMI output, WiFi capability and runs Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor and HTC’s Sense user interface. Sprint also claims the device’s touchscreen display – at 4.3 inches – is one of the market’s largest, and boasts a new video chat service from Qik. The device is available for pre-order now and will be sold through all Sprint retail channels as well as via national retail partners RadioShack, BestBuy and Wal-Mart.

In an interview with Reuters, Matt Carter, the head of Sprint’s 4G business, said the operator has a long waiting list of customers for the device. Analysts, however, have warned that the launch next month could be overshadowed by the unveiling of a new iPhone, also expected in June. Certainly, the device is key to Sprint’s ambitions to make WiMAX a mass market, nationwide success and a true rival to forthcoming LTE networks from AT&T and Verizon. In a statement, Sprint talked up the performance of its WiMAX network – which it claims is up to ten times faster than 3G technologies and gives average download rates of 3-6Mb/s – and said this gives EVO “the fastest data speeds of any US wireless device available today.” Sprint has launched WiMAX in 32 US markets so far and expects to extend this in 2010. When the device is out of reach of WiMAX networks, it will fall back onto Sprint’s EV-DO 3G networks. Sprint’s Carter also told Reuters he sees the device as only a part of Sprint's plan for regaining ground lost to Verizon Wireless and AT&T, which have both won customers at Sprint's expense for years. "They've been eating off what they perceived as a dead corpse but we're back," Carter said. The executive told Reuters that Sprint also was in talks with electronics companies including General Electric and Samsung Electronics about embedding WiMAX connections into consumer devices. Carter declined comment on timing for any products but said that devices being discussed included everything from e-readers to cameras and washing machines to medical equipment.

SAP buys Sybase for US$5.8B

Germany's SAP is to buy business software maker Sybase for US$5.8 billion in a move that will significantly ramp up its presence in the smartphone space, reports Reuters. California-based Sybase has technology designed to deliver business applications to smartphones and other mobile devices. It is also the fourth-largest maker of database software after Oracle, IBM and Microsoft. "We want to make sure SAP solutions can be accessed from all leading mobile devices. The acquisition of Sybase will allow us and our partners to do just that," SAP's co-CEO Jim Hagemann Snabe said on a conference call. SAP has agreed to pay US$65 per share in cash for Sybase, which represents a 56 percent premium to Sybase's Tuesday closing price on the New York Stock Exchange. The acquisition – due to close in the third quarter - would be the second-largest in SAP's nearly 40-year history.

Reuters notes that Sybase's most valuable asset is its mobile software because it will give SAP an edge over Oracle when it comes to allowing customers to use business management software on the go. Those products accounted for about 27 percent of Sybase's US$403 million in software sales last year with the rest coming from databases. “This acquisition has dramatically altered the mobile enterprise solutions market, and we see this as a win-win for both SAP and Sybase,” said Jack Gold of J.Gold Associates in a research note. “Mobility is an area where SAP has tried to be a major player on its own for some time, but has largely failed and has needed to rely on third party solutions to remain competitive.” He described the deal as a “direct assault at Oracle,” which he says has had a “a weak mobile story” to date.

Three Upcoming Samsung’s On Their Way to Magenta

For those of you who aren’t yet in the Android/Blackberry/Windows Phone/iPhone/Smartphone camp, T-Mobile has still got you covered. T-Mobile and their mighty fine manufacturing partner Samsung are set to release 3 handsets this coming summer covering a range of designs. First, we have the T359 shown above which will replace the aging T349. Coming with a 1.3 megapixel camera, full html browsing and oddly added in, active sync exchange mail support. Kind of an interesting addition to the device but hey, whatever floats your boat. All these phones will find a home in T-Mobile stores right June 23 of this very year.

The T479, pictured above will replace the Gravity 2 and will conveniently be known as, drum roll please…the Gravity 3! With a 2.0 megapixel camera, HSDPA 3.6 3G support and as one of the better selling franchises in T-Mobile history, the Gravity 3 has plenty of mass appeal. Originally, we had heard of two-color variation, Indigo and Rum, however as soon above we know one to be the blue/black combination but no word on if the Rum variant is still forthcoming.

The last but certainly not least of the tri-fecta of upcoming Samsung devices is the T669. With a resistive touch screen, onboard Dolphin browser and a 2.0 megapixel camera the T669 is certainly a phone that strides the thin line between smartphone and dumbphone. Apparently this phone with also have an “optimized” version of Touchwiz, whatever that means as Touchwiz certainly failed to find its niche after the Behold 2 dropped.

Pay monthly deals start from a surprisingly affordable tenner a month, with free handset deals kicking in at £20 per month for 200 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet.

It looks like the bada platform will indeed be the beginning of the smartphone democracy that Samsung pledged at MWC…

MicroSD Offers a New Approach to NFC, Says ABI Research

Mobile contactless payments and a wealth of other applications enabled by Near Field Communication are coming to mobile handsets over the next 12 months, but not in the format originally envisioned. A lack of commercially available NFC-embedded handsets combined with the rise of mobile handsets with microSD slots has helped shape a new approach to NFC that promises to bypass both handset vendors’ and mobile network operators’ core involvement.

ABI Research’s latest NFC study splits NFC IC forecasts into three key NFC markets: mobile handsets, computer and consumer electronics, and peripherals for mobile handsets. These three markets combined will help drive significant NFC uptake, and NFC ICs will approach 300 million shipments in 2015. Last year more NFC ICs shipped for use in computers and peripherals than for handsets, and a new alternative platform is also emerging. New microSD offerings with NFC functionality are coming to market, joining stickers as a way to bring contactless connectivity to existing mobile handsets.

“Mobile handsets remain the key market for NFC but increasingly the potential of the technology is driving NFC into other devices and form factors,” says principal M2M analyst Jonathan Collins. “The potential to offer NFC to handsets with microSD slots is helping to change the mobile handset landscape for many NFC vendors and supporters.”

MNOs remain the gatekeepers for mass NFC handset rollouts, but over the next five years the emergence of microSD cards alongside other offerings such as active and passive contactless stickers will provide mobile users with initial access to mobile contactless payments. These options also provide a more direct route to potential consumers for financial institutions looking to deliver contactless mobile phone payments. Combined, these changes will provide renewed incentive for handset vendors and their major network operator customers to start delivering embedded NFC handsets.

There are also opportunities for CE device makers to lead in the commercialization of NFC where it can provide simple connectivity between same-brand devices.

Nokia Siemens Networks pushes for a common data model to tear down data silos

Implements TM Forum’s Information Framework (SID) for operators across OSS, BSS and customer experience management.

With significant pressure on operating costs, service providers need standard building blocks that enable business agility. To support this business need, Nokia Siemens Networks is working towards a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)-based environment. As a concrete step towards that goal, the company recently received TM Forum’s Information Framework (SID) certification to its open, process-led OSS/BSS architecture and its business analysis application suite.

SID conformant interfaces help operators avoid time consuming point-to-point integration efforts aligning Operations Support System (OSS), Business Support System (BSS) and customer experience management processes between fixed, wireless, broadband and IP domains.

“As part of the TM Forum’s Frameworx Integrated Business Architecture, the Information Framework provides a common information reference model which enables faster implementation of projects, enhances service quality and optimally leverages network data across multi-vendor environments,” said Keith Willetts, Chairman & CEO, TM Forum. “This certification across several product and business domains is a testament to Nokia Siemens Networks’ commitment to help operators reduce integration costs and succeed in multi-vendor, multi-technology environments.”

“The management and business systems of most communication service provider comprise a patchwork of multi-vendor applications and hardware platforms,” says Juhani Hintikka, head of Operations Support Solutions, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Due to the inconsistency between the information and process structures of the different solutions, changing one element in the setup requires adjustments across the network. Our aim is to simplify data consolidation from different systems, enabling operators to speed up systems integration.”

In the OSS arena for instance, Nokia Siemens Networks’ SID conformant NetAct 6 helps provide an end-to-end view of all network elements and services. Operators can leverage this unified network management solution to speed up their time-to-market and offer an enhanced Quality of Experience.

In the BSS domain, the vendor’s SID conformant charge@once business solution will simplify the implementation of converged charging and billing and customer relationship management applications, helping operators adapt their tariff models to diverse customer needs and launch new market campaigns based on detailed customer insight dashboards.

In addition, with it’s SID conformant Serve atOnce Intelligence business analysis application suite, Nokia Siemens Networks supports operators efficiently in detecting business critical service degradation as well as other network problems fast to take appropriate actions. Serve atOnce Intelligence consolidates and analyses usage, service quality and business performance data from all kinds of access and service technologies like 2G voice, 3G data, MMS or web browsing, etc.

Mobile user data analysis instantly measures marketing effectiveness

Nokia Siemens Networks launches new software to enable consolidated view of customer usage patterns and business performance.

Nokia Siemens Networks launched new software that allows mobile operators to improve understanding of customer usage patterns and to analyze the business performance for new offers. The immediate feedback enabled by the new charge@once business analytics software helps to measure whether an operator is genuinely improving the experience for its customers and enhancing the business value of its customer relations. It has been launched ready for Management World 2010 in Nice, France.

“Telco operators can only develop sound marketing strategies based on comprehensive, up-to-date insight into what their customers are doing,” said Rick Centeno, head of Charging, Billing and Care at Nokia Siemens Networks. “This software helps operators develop effective strategies to optimize and adapt their market offerings and business propositions and then measure the effects of those changes.” According to Nokia Siemens Networks research* operators worldwide consider the improvement of their subscribers’ experience as their most important business goal for 2012.

charge@once business analytics provides a set of predefined reports and dashboards for revenue analysis, customer segmentation, service and product use. The dashboards can be customized and personalized providing a user-friendly presentation of information and metrics. Extensive charging data analysis capabilities complement vendor’s recently launched Insight & Experience Framework. Notably charge@once business analytics adds business intelligence functionality to the company’s customer value management solutions**. It helps operators assess the revenue potential of offers, compare the impact of marketing campaigns across revenue, usage, and subscriptions, gain a clear view on figures such as how often customers recharged their prepaid account per offer and provide insights into customer churn, how often subscribers bought a voucher to recharge their accounts, and usage of specific services.

Analyzing the data from the charging and billing systems is one key element to manage and improve customer experience. To get a 360 degree view on customer needs, this in-depth charging data analysis can be complemented by analyzing data from network elements, other IT systems as well as end-user devices. Nokia Siemens Networks’ Insight & Experience Framework captures and mines this wealth of customer data, giving operators’ further powerful tools to truly treat their customers as individuals and maximize business performance.

Ichia to double flexible PCB capacity by year-end 2010

Handset keypad and flexible PCB (FPCB) maker Ichia Technologies plans to double its FPCB capacity to 100,000 square feet a month by the end of 2010 as compared to a year earlier, according to the company.

FPCB sales totaled NT$391 million (US$12.33 million) in April, accounting for 61.5% of total sales. Sales of keypads, casings and connector parts totaled NT$245 million for the remaining 38.5%.

Industry sources indicated that Ichia have started shipping FPCBs in small volume to RIM (Research in Motion) and Sony Ericsson, in addition to Nokia indirectly through panel makers such as Chimei Innolux (CMI), AU Optronics (AUO) and Wintek.

Ichia has also begun to ship high-margin handset keypad modules, which also include casing and connectors, to white-box handset makers in China, the sources added.

PND market further squeezed by Windows Mobile free navigation

Portable navigation device (PND) makers are about to see an even harsher market for their devices, with Microsoft's recent update of its Bing Maps application for Windows Mobile to provide free turn-by-turn GPS navigation services.

Earlier this year, both Nokia and Google have introduced similar features for handsets as well.

PND shipments have stalled recently. Garmin reported a 15% revenue decline in the first quarter for its mobile and car-use device division, and confirmed that inventory level at its distributors is high. The European PND market shrunk by 16% in the first quarter, TomTom pointed out.

PND sales in 2010 are expected to stay flat, according to industry observers.

The free navigation applications have also impacted paid navigation services from carriers and third-party software developers, according to sources in Taiwan-based smartphone makers.

The future lies in LBS (location-based service) social networks and advertisements, sources said. When GPS navigation becomes a standard function on handsets, consumers will likely want to know where their friends are and be more receptive to advertisements of businesses nearby.

4G market to come into focus in 2012, says ABI Research

ABI Research has been tracking cities and population coverage for 4G for the past year. At the end of 2009 there were more than 170 802.16e carriers across 65 countries, covering 480 million people. That number is projected to cross the 1 billion mark by the fourth quarter 2012. USB dongles have been an excellent vehicle to prime the market along with CPE and laptops, but mobile handsets will be essential to the success of WiMAX. Yota, Sprint, and Clearwire have already started beefing up their lineups with models from HTC and Samsung.

Meanwhile, mobile operators are seeking out LTE licenses. Twenty carriers will launch by the fourth quarter. Population coverage lags WiMAX but will catch up, reaching 600 million people by the end of 2012. LTE coverage will start in urban hotspots but carriers indicate they will push coverage rapidly in order to handle the increasing mobile data wave.

The 4G market could well have 150 million subscriptions by 2014. The split between WiMAX and LTE will depend on WiMAX carrier commitments to upgrade to 802.16m. WiMAX vendors such as Motorola and Huawei are gearing up to offer "802.16e+" which will bring features of 802.16m to the current market. Many companies in the ecosystem are already working on interoperability testing for 802.16m.

"TD-LTE is the wildcard," said VP for forecasting Jake Saunders. "It was originally primed as an evolutionary technology for TD-SCDMA carrier China Mobile, but has been gaining interest from some WiMAX carriers. Both camps will be frantically trying to ramp up IC wafer manufacturing, product portfolios and population coverage. There will be considerable scrutiny over the next few years."

ABI practice director Philip Solis added, "Some WiMAX service providers may switch from WiMAX to TD-LTE, but others are doing this partly as insurance and partly to assure investors of an alternate path so they may go forward with WiMAX. This is something for smaller greenfield service providers to consider. Large mobile operators will move forward with LTE whether it be on FDD or TDD spectrum. Clearwire can do both WiMAX and LTE if it wants to since it has the spectrum to do so."

Mobility redefined

BEIJING, China – For some time now I’ve considered myself mobile. My work can be done pretty much anywhere I can get an internet connection as I work exclusively online. All the people I work with have the same benefit (yep, I see that as a major benefit) and we use a selection of online tools to stay in touch and collaborate. This week, however, my definition of mobility was shown to be pretty outmoded. I’m not really mobile, but partially mobile. Read on after the jump to find out why.

This week myself and Phil have spent most of our week in Beijing with the crew who are running the newly launched China edition of Nokia Conversations. There we learned about how the reader of the China edition differs from the global edition. What surprised me most was that they’re rapidly redefining the definition of mobile, at least as I see it.

Now it might be my status as a “digital immigrant” (someone who’s of a certain age and knows what life was like with wires) rather than a “digital native” (who was born or brought up in the internet age) that leads me to being less mobile than others.

Although I live and work a pretty mobile life, there are still parts of my life which immobilise me. I still own and regularly watch TV. This, apparently, is a bit old hat. The typical readers of Nokia Conversations China don’t own a TV. They watch TV shows and movies on their laptops. This is driven largely by the fact they share an apartment, rather than live alone. But it’s also driven by how they socialise – rarely would they have friends over preferring instead to meet outside somewhere, either in the park or a restaurant or other social venue. And, by having all of their media with them, available through their phone or laptop, they’re truly mobile.

TV was just one example. As we worked through the list of technology each reader might own or want, a simple pattern emerged. Pretty much every piece of technology they owned and used could be slung in a bag and taken with them wherever they go. All of their entertainment could be consumed wherever they went.

If I want to do the same thing, I need to plan beforehand. If I want to watch a movie on the plane, I need to think about which one I watch and then decide whether to bring the original DVD or if I have a digital copy move it from my desktop to my laptop (yes, I still use a desktop).

I’m sure the users in China aren’t the only portion of the global population who are like this. Consider, for example, those users who’s only piece of technology they own is a mobile phone. But in the western world, where technology has been abundant for decades now, and where it’s hard to find a home that doesn’t contain at least one TV, we have to question how mobile we really are.

I don’t think it’s just age either. Some of my younger colleagues, who truly are digital natives, are in a similar position to me. It’s normal for us to consume our entertainment at home, even though more of it is gradually becoming more mobile. For the folks we talked about in China though, our definition of mobility doesn’t apply. I can’t help but feeling they’re coming at this whole thing from a new perspective. One much newer, and more effective, than ours. One capable of redefining the very definition of a word we in the developed world have created.
