Motorola Shadow Spotted in the wild, get your 4”+ Screen phone on Verizon!

After seeing the image for this phone, I’m sure that we all collectively agree that this is going to be the sexiest device of this summer. Codnamed “The Shadow”, this device from Motorola is rumored to be carrying some impressive specs. Here’s a list of the very impressive rumored specs:

1. 4.1" TFT WVGA screen
2. Texas Instruments OMAP 3630 45nm Processor clocked at 720 MHz
3. Android 2.2 by launch possible, otherwise Android 2.1 with Moto BLUR
4. 8 MP camera
5. 720p recording
6. 1080p output via HDMI port
7. ~9mm thick (For reference, iPhone 3GS is 12.3mm)
8. Releasing in July


Pictured on this manual is the Android 2.1 with Moto BLUR. But according to the poster on HowardForums, this handset should have full Adobe Flash 10.1 support by launch. This leads me to believe that since Google requires Android 2.2 as the minimum requirement for Adobe Flash 10.1 on smartphones, this handset will ship with Android 2.2 “Froyo”.

For anybody who wants to know about the performance watch the video below which compares the TI OMAP 3430 CPU (underclocked to 550 MHz) that is used in the Motorola DROID vs the TI OMAP 3630 CPU (720 MHz). The TI OMAP 3630 uses a faster clocked GPU that helps it achieve 80% better performance on the graphics benchmark.

Productivity. The OMAP3430 is the first applications processor in the industry to integrate the ARM® Cortex™-A8 superscalar microprocessor core. Combined with TI's technology in the OMAP3430, the ARM Cortex-A8 enables faster user interfaces, faster data access and boosts productivity and entertainment applications on the mobile phone, while maintaining power efficiencies expected in a handset.

Multimedia / Gaming. IVA 2+ a second-generation, power-optimized version of TI's imaging, video and audio accelerator used in TI's DaVinci™ technology provides up to 4x performance improvement in multi-media processing versus previous OMAP processors. The increased capabilities of the IVA2+ enables multi-standard (MPEG4, H264, Windows Media Video, RealVideo etc.) encode and decode at DVD resolutions. With the advanced multimedia capabilities of the OMAP3430 a multi-standard DVD-quality camcorder can be added to a phone for the first time. Graphics. The OMAP3430 processor embeds Imagination Technologies' POWERVR SGX™ graphics core, and supports OpenGL ES® 2.0 and OpenVG™, providing superior graphics performance and advanced user interface capabilities. TI is enabling sophisticated and dynamic images with "smart pixel" technology offered via OpenGL ES 2.0. This unique technology allows each pixel in an image to be programmed individually, giving developers the power to create rich effects with cinematic realism. Users will now experience "life-like" facial features, advanced reflection effects and multi-textured backgrounds in the mobile environment.

Imaging. An integrated image signal processor (ISP) allows for image quality enhancement while reducing external components, lowering system costs and lowering system power. The OMAP3430 can connect to images sensors up to 12 mega pixels in size with minimal shot-to-shot delay, enabling camera phones that are equivalent to or better than most digital still cameras on the market today. Additional features in the OMAP3430 like On-the-fly JPEG compression and connectivity support for both serial and parrallel cameras aid in throughput and storage as well as add design flexibility.

Software and support. The OMAP3430 is designed to support all high-level operating system (HLOS) platforms, including the leading Linux®, Microsoft® Windows Mobile™, and Symbian™ OSes. The OMAP Developer Network provides an extensive range of programs and media components that manufacturers can use for differentiating and delivering products to market fast.

Security. The built-in M-Shield™ security technology enables operators to add value-added services for content protection, transaction security and secure network access, plus terminal security functions such as secure flashing and booting, terminal identity protection and network lock protection. Enhanced with ARM TrustZone™ support, OMAP3430 security is based on open APIs and provides an environment for secure applications that deliver robust performance and interoperability.

Power management. The OMAP3430 boast the most advanced and effective power management techniques in the market. The chip makes exhaustive use of TI's SmartReflex technologies which include a broad range of intelligent and adaptive hardware and software techniques that dynamically control voltage, frequency and power based on device activity, modes of operation and temperature. Additionally the OMAP3430 is supported by the TWL4030 power management/audio codec companion device which is designed specifically to maximize battery life and boost system performance in mobile phones that leverage the OMAP3430 applications processor. The highly integrated TWL4030 combines SmartReflex-compliant voltage regulators and converters, a high-fidelity audio/voice codec, class-AB/D audio amplifiers, high-speed USB 2.0 OTG transceiver, battery charger circuitry and much more into a single chip, significantly reducing board space and system cost while managing power consumption efficiently.

Google Confirms Froyo Launch: “The roll out to Nexus One devices has begun!”

Last last night (early this morning) there was some confusion about our post indicating that Android 2.2, Froyo, had started to roll out. Some thought we had Photoshopped the pictures (I wish I was that good at Photoshop), others though we were just using the developer build, and others thought we got some sort of special press copy. But rest easy people, I have in my inbox a confirmation from Google that says the following: “The roll out to Nexus One devices has begun!“

Naturally, I asked the company what the deal was with the roll out, since I was as surprised as anyone to see 2.2 ready to install on my device when I picked it up last night. After all, Google itself had just tweeted out that the new OS would be available on the Nexus One in the “next few weeks.” But that looks to be a solid under-promise, over-deliver — very nice, Google.

Actually, like many other Google roll-outs, this will be a staggered one. So it may be a couple of weeks before everyone gets it (Google didn’t say). And yes, it does look like a lot of members of the press are getting it first (maybe because we got the device at the Nexus One launch event prior to its launch, who knows). But again, it is starting to roll out to everyone.

Those who can’t wait for the OTA update, can manually install a build. Phandroid details how to do that — sounds easy enough.

Having played with it for the past day now, I can safely say that Android 2.2 is indeed a big, big improvement over 2.1. The speed alone is the killer feature — and there are a number of other nifty feature upgrades as well. Now I just feel bad for the new EVO 4G, which Google gave to all attendees at Google I/O. Because it runs a customized Sense build of Android, it’s likely going to be a bit before we see the 2.2 version of that. And it makes the device feel sluggish compared to the Nexus One with 2.2 now.

Rather than stream their own music library to your over the air, mSpot will upload your own library to their cloud and push it back down to you on demand. The app will even sync with your Mac or PC and will cache previously played music on your device for times when a wireless data connection isn't an option.
