Google backed by almost all U.S. publishers on digital bookstore

Monday, May 10, 2010

U.S. online search giant Google Inc has clinched the support of almost all publishers in the United States for its digital bookstore expected to be launched as early as the end of June, company officials said Sunday. The number of authors and publishers that have agreed to participate in Google’s sales effort to distribute books online topped 25,000 as of Sunday, the officials added.

If books with expired copyright are included, Google will handle over 4 million books, including about 2 million handled by the publishers that have agreed to join what is set to be the world’s largest virtual bookstore.

The entry of Google will likely accelerate the growth of the electronic book business, already pioneered by rivals like Amazon.com Inc and Apple Inc, as publishers also seek new and expanded outlets to sell their products.

The company did not elaborate on details of its digital bookstore, called Google Editions, but one official emphasized that it will include almost all U.S. publishers.

Google Editions will allow users to easily buy books through its online search service and will likely involve a model where publishers decide the retail price.

Android Shakes Up U.S. Smartphone Market

First quarter 2010 information from The NPD Group’s Mobile Phone Track reveals a shift in the smartphone market, as Android OS edged out Apple’s OS for the number-two position behind RIM.

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.--The Android operating system (OS) continued to shake up the U.S. mobile phone market in the first quarter (Q1) of 2010, moving past Apple to take the number-two position among smartphone operating systems, according to The NPD Group, a leading market research company. NPD’s wireless market research reveals that based on unit sales to consumers last quarter the Android operating system moved into second position at 28 percent behind RIM’s OS (36 percent) and ahead of Apple’s OS (21 percent).

“Carriers continue to offer attractive pricing for devices, but will need to present other data-plan options to attract more customers in the future.”

“As in the past, carrier distribution and promotion have played a crucial role in determining smartphone market share,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “In order to compete with the iPhone, Verizon Wireless has expanded its buy-one-get-one offer beyond RIM devices to now include all of their smartphones.”

Strong sales of the Droid, Droid Eris, and Blackberry Curve via these promotions helped keep Verizon Wireless’s smartphone sales on par with AT&T in Q1. According to NPD’s Mobile Phone Track, smartphone sales at AT&T comprised nearly a third of the entire smartphone market (32 percent), followed by Verizon Wireless (30 percent), T-Mobile (17 percent) and Sprint (15 percent).

“Recent previews of BlackBerry 6, the recently announced acquisition of Palm by HP, and the pending release of Windows Phone 7 demonstrates the industry’s willingness to make investments to address consumer demand for smartphones and other mobile devices,” Rubin said. “Carriers continue to offer attractive pricing for devices, but will need to present other data-plan options to attract more customers in the future.”

The continued popularity of messaging phones and smartphones resulted in slightly higher prices for all mobile phones, despite an overall drop in the number of mobile phones purchased in the first quarter. The average selling price for all mobile phones in Q1 reached $88, which is a 5 percent increase from Q1 2009. Smartphone unit prices, by comparison, averaged $151 in Q1 2010, which is a 3 percent decrease over the previous year.

Methodology: The NPD Group compiles and analyzes mobile device sales data based on more than 150,000 completed online consumer research surveys each month. Surveys are based on a nationally balanced and demographically-representative sample, and results are projected to represent the entire population of U.S. consumers. Note: Sales figures do not include corporate/enterprise mobile phone sales.

Bell to exclusively launch HTC Legend?

Bell is in need of a new flagship device – they had a good run with the Palm Pre but something bigger and better needs to be added. We’ve been tipped that Bell will be exclusively releasing the Android OS 2.1 HTC Legend sometime “this May/June”. No exact dates were given or pricing… but if Bell brought this on board it would do incredible things for their lineup. It would be their first Android smartphone that runs 2.1… currently the Galaxy and the upcoming Dext both have 1.5.

Apart from having 2.1, some notable specs of the Legend are that it has HTC Sense, a 3.2-inch multi-touch capacitive AMOLED screen (resolution of 320 x 480), comes with a 5 megapixel camera with video capabilities, 3.5mm headset jack, 600 MHz Qualcomm processor, can hold up to 32 GB with a microSD card, WiFi.

HP Hurricane webOS tablet may be released in 3rd quarter

We first speculated that since HP bought out Palm, they would come out wth a webOS tablet. According to many industry insiders, this appears to be more of a reality now. An insider at HP tells us that a webOS tablet under the code name HP Hurricane could be released the third quarter of this year.

Not too long ago--actually, only three weeks back--HP was still bragging about its HP Slate, a Windows 7 based tablet that was supposed to become the new iPad killer. However, early reviews suggested that the HP slate should just kill itself and that's exactly what appears to have happened.

"It is a really interesting device, but runs as slow as a turtle," says Los Angeles industry analyst Paul Mueller. "I think they could have had something with a faster processor, but that would have led to less battery life than the Slate already had." Like us, Mr. Mueller looks forward to the HP Hurricane. "If rumors of this tablet are true, this can be a killer device--webOS is an outstanding operating system for a tablet."

"We also achieved a reduction in churn, as customers responded well to our high-quality services and wide range of feature-rich handsets, and to our Battery Swap and Overage Protection programs, demonstrating that we understand our customers' needs and exceed their expectations.

"As we expand 3G availability and add to our portfolio of smartphones, including two new Android phones—one from HTC and an exclusive from Samsung, we expect data revenues to continue to grow and to comprise an ever larger share of service revenues.

"Though postpay customers remain our primary focus, we are executing on growth opportunities in the prepaid segment. The improved prepaid additions this quarter are proof that we provide outstanding communications experiences for all of our customers. To build on this success, we significantly enhanced our prepaid offerings at the end of the quarter by adding new data services such as picture messaging, applications such as ring tones and games, e-mail and web services.

"Also, as part of our major enablement initiatives, we upgraded our campaign management system to facilitate more targeted and effective direct mail campaigns. Though profitability for the quarter was impacted by planned expenditures related to these initiatives, we expect that the initiatives will ultimately reduce operational expenses and support our customer-focused strategy over the long term."

CradlePoint Router and Mobile Broadband Adapter Pair With Sprint 4G to Create Instant Offices, Business Continuity Solutions

With the power of Sprint 4G, CradlePoint MBR1200 Router makes instant Internet access simple for small or remote offices; CradlePoint CBA750 Mobile Broadband Adapter helps businesses stay connected during wireline outages

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Sprint (NYSE: S) has certified CradlePoint’s MBR1200 Failsafe Gigabit N Router and CBA750 3G/4G Mobile Broadband Adapter for use with the Sprint 3G and 4G Mobile Broadband networks.

CradlePoint MBR1200 Failsafe Gigabit N Router and CBA750 Mobile Broadband Adapter are cost-effective answers for the Internet downtime caused by wireline outage issues that have plagued businesses. They extend corporate security policies, failover technology and 3G/4G access for virtually anytime Internet connectivity to small, remote and temporary offices at a fraction of the cost of most current solutions.

“When wireline access goes down and companies lose their connectivity, business doesn’t get done – that means no email, no research, no orders processed and no credit card approvals,” said Fared Adib, vice president – Product Development, Sprint. “With these two solutions from CradlePoint, Sprint customers can use our 3G and 4G networks to ensure business continuity and access to the Internet and other corporate resources when it matters most. As the first national wireless carrier to test, launch and market 4G technology, Sprint can play a vital role for our business customers using these two devices.”

Both routers are available today through Sprint Business sales, telesales (1-800-SPRINT1) and online at www.sprint.com/routers. MBR1200 is priced at $349.99 and CBA750 is priced at $299.99. A Sprint Mobile Broadband USB modem, PC ExpressCard modem or Connection Card with active subscription is required for use with both MBR1200 and CBA750.

Combining Sprint 3G or 4G mobile broadband service with CradlePoint’s MBR1200 lets businesses connect to the Internet in a matter of minutes. With MBR1200, businesses are no longer at the mercy of wireline installation waiting periods, service area limitations or the downtime of legacy wired networks. Small branch or remote offices can enjoy the power and security of a business-class router and convenience of wireless connection to the Internet, without on-site IT management.

MBR1200 is an ideal Internet connectivity solution for business, whether in need of a dedicated connection in a small or home office, or merely as a backup to the current Internet service. A robust Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) router with Sprint 3G and 4G service, MBR1200 offers backup connectivity and will automatically switch to a secondary wired or unwired connection when the primary service is interrupted. It will return to the primary connection once service is restored.

The rich set of features for MBR1200 includes:

· 3G and 4G compatibility with five mobile broadband connection ports
(three USB, one ExpressCard and one Connection Card)

· Five 10/100/1000 (one WAN and four LAN) Ethernet ports

· Failover/failback for easy redundant Internet connections with or without wired Internet service

· Wi-Fi Security: 64/128-bit WEP (11b/g), WPA, WPA2, and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK supported

· Enterprise-level security, including VPN endpoint

· Supports up to 64 Wi-Fi clients on both 3G and 4G networks (network speeds per user are reduced as more Wi-Fi clients are connected)

· Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) with internal antennas (300+ yard range) and external antenna ports for optional antennas (to provide additional distance and performance)

CBA750 is powered by WiPipe™ technology, and working together with Sprint’s 3G and 4G networks, gives businesses a primary connection for applications such as Point of Sales (POS) or redundant connection to backup wired line services. As a high-performance adapter, CradlePoint’s CBA750 provides IP Pass-Through capabilities for devices that require wireless broadband access. Quickly installed, CBA750 handles the connection without configuration and provides enhanced network connectivity with support for USB and PC ExpressCard modems running on the Sprint 3G and 4G networks.

“CBA750 is easy to set up and requires no additional change in hardware configuration, which makes it an ideal solution for the office that doesn’t have much IT support to securely and reliably connect to the Internet at broadband speeds,” said Jack Alton, vice president of Sales for CradlePoint. “Many customers will also be able to use CBA750 as either a primary or redundant connection to their POS system.”

As a flexible connectivity solution, CBA750 converts Ethernet to mobile broadband and mobile broadband to Ethernet, making it easy to quickly drop mobile broadband into any Ethernet connection, and provide wireless broadband access to a host computer or server on a local area network. As a dual-mode adapter, the device can be run on both 3G and 4G networks via USB and ExpressCard WAN ports.

When used as part of a failover solution, CBA750 provides a wireless 3G/4G connection as backup connectivity when primary service is interrupted.

CBA750 also provides the benefit of “Antenna Remoting” through the combination of an “always-on” signal strength meter and its Power-over-Ethernet (POE) feature. The “always-on” signal strength meter determines the best mobile broadband reception for optimum placement and customer satisfaction. This flexibility, along with the Power-over-Ethernet feature, lets the user take advantage of existing CAT5 cabling within a building to bring the Internet connection to the equipment room.

Today, Sprint 4G covers nearly 41 million people in 32 markets nationwide and expects to have up to 120 million people covered by the end of 2010. Later this year, Sprint expects to launch service in multiple markets, including Boston, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, St. Louis and Washington, D.C. View 4G coverage for all Sprint 4G markets at www.sprint.com/4G.

The 3G Sprint Mobile Broadband Network (inclusive of data roaming) reaches more than 269 million people, 18,652 cities and 1,838 airports. The Sprint Mobile Broadband Network (inclusive of data roaming) has twice the coverage of AT&T's current 3G network and 14 times the coverage of T-Mobile's current 3G network, both based on square miles1.

According to Sprint performance data, Sprint Mobile Broadband connections are successfully connected and maintained better than 99 out of 100 times. According to a recent independent network test conducted by PC World, no one has a more reliable network than Sprint based on a recent 13 city 3G performance test 2.

AT&T Celebrates Commitment to Leading Humanitarian Organisation Telecoms Sans Frontieres

Longstanding Support for the Charity Reaffirmed at this Weekend's Monaco Grand Prix
London, United Kingdom, May 10, 2010.

AT&T* announced it will celebrate its ongoing support for TĆ©lĆ©coms Sans FrontiĆØres (TSF) at the Monaco Grand Prix with the placement of the charity' logo on the AT&T Williams race cars.

The presence of the TSF logo will provide the charity with an opportunity to raise its global profile during the race weekend, arguably the most famous event in the Formula One calendar. An estimated 200,000 visitors are expected to attend the Monaco street circuit, and the event attracts a worldwide television audience of approximately 56 million people. The charity's logo will be placed on the headrest of the AT&T Williams FW32 racing car with the wording 'Presented by AT&T'.

It is also a timely celebration as Jean-FranƧois Cazenave, one of the charity's co-founders, was recently awarded the Legion d’Honneur, France’s highest decoration of honour, for his humanitarian efforts. TSF is the leading charity specialising in emergency telecommunications.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our charity in front of a global audience,"said Jean-FranƧois Cazenave, President and co-founder of TSF. “Support from global organisations such as AT&T is so important to our mission to bring communications technology to those in real need. We have a long-standing and positive relationship with AT&T, which has helped our work so much.”

“In emergency situations, people need to communicate – to get help, get home, or let family and friends know they are safe. This is why the charity TĆ©lĆ©coms Sans FrontiĆØres is so close to our hearts,” said Tom Regent, head of AT&T in EMEA. “We have supported TSF for many years and the spirit behind TSF is the same that drives AT&T – bringing people together with the aid of technology.”

2010 has already proved to be a busy year for TSF. Following the devastating earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, the charity deployed emergency response teams to the affected areas, setting up humanitarian calling operations to help victims get in touch with family and friends, and assist aid agencies in their logistical operations.

AT&T has supported TSF since 2003, and has donated over $400,000 to the charity since 2005. Following the Haiti earthquake in January, the AT&T Foundation pledged an additional $50,000 to TSF.

AT&T is the title sponsor of the AT&T Williams team, and provides the team with a full suite of advanced IP-based communications solutions including a virtual private network that enables secure and reliable communications from the race track to the team’s headquarters and other key locations. In addition, AT&T Williams uses AT&T Synaptic HostingSM and AT&T’s Intelligent Content Distribution Service (ICDS) to support its enhanced multifaceted global web presence at www.attwilliams.com.

AT&T is also featuring Cazenave and his TSF co-founder Monique Lanne-Petit in the new AT&T Williams '60 seconds with…' online interview series, which profiles everything from their favourite Grand Prix races to the work challenges keeping them awake at night: http://youratt.com/attwilliams/en/sixtyseconds/6

During the last 15 years, AT&T has invested more than $500 million in its network disaster recovery (NDR) programme, which includes specially trained managers, engineers and technicians, as well as a fleet of more than 300 self-contained equipment trailers and support vehicles that house the same equipment and components as an AT&T data-routing or voice-switching centre. Since 1992, the NDR team has been activated more than a dozen times in response to disasters, including restoring service after the tornadoes in Oklahoma in 1999; the September 11 attacks at the World Trade Center in 2001; the Prague floods in 2002; and the Chilean earthquake in 2010.

Cloud-Based Consumer Backup Revenue to Increase Five-fold by 2015

Revenue related to consumer use of cloud-based backup/storage sites will grow from almost $75 million in 2009 to more than $372 million in 2015, at a CAGR of 27.89%.

According to ABI Research practice director Larry Fisher, “The consumer value proposition for many Cloud Computing applications is simple; they’re free. Most of the 1000+ US consumers responding to a 2010 ABI Research survey said they were hesitant to pay anything for use of a cloud-based service site.”

Right behind the price/cost issue, the major reason most would consider using a cloud-based application was ubiquity: the concept that they could access their valued content from any Internet-connected computer.

ABI Research’s analysis found that just 11.6% of the US consumer market for online backup/storage services was paid for in 2009. Most cloud-based backup and storage sites provide consumer services either entirely free or free at the entry level, but several do provide a more robust offering on a paid basis.

The ABI Research forecast model indicates that the paid portion of the sector will grow along with increasing use of netbooks to replace (or supplement) consumer laptops and other mobile Internet devices. Other factors supporting growth in the sector include growing public awareness of cloud computing applications, as well as disasters that result in utility service disruptions.

Fisher continues, “Many companies will provide free access to their web-based applications to consumers in the hope that they’ll be sufficiently impressed to bring their enthusiasm for these applications to the businesses for which they work. Commercial pricing is then based on the number of users and the amount of storage used.”

A new study from ABI Research, “Consumer Cloud Computing” has found that more than 143 million consumers took advantage of the free or low-cost applications that reside in the Internet cloud in 2009, a number that is forecast to grow to nearly 160.6 million by the end of 2015.

AppliedMicro Introduces APM821xx GHz Processor Family for Low Cost, Energy-Efficient Storage Platforms and Consumer Media Servers

High Performance and Integration of Next-Generation Embedded System-on-a-Chip Enables Entry-Level to Mid-Range NAS Systems to Deliver 16 Simultaneous HD Video Streams.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., --Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (NASDAQ:AMCC), or AppliedMicro, a global leader in energy conscious computing and communications solutions, announced the APM 821xx processor, a single-core system-on-a-chip (SoC) device offering high performance, high integration and energy efficiency for multi-function storage applications and media servers for the connected digital home. The processor enables new levels of performance for NAS systems and media servers at reduced cost and reduced power consumption.

The APM 821xx processor offers up to 1GHz CPU speeds capable of delivering up to 2,000 DMIPS (Dhrystone Millions of Instructions per Second) of compute performance to enable storage platforms that can deliver more than 16 simultaneous streams of high definition video for home networking applications. AppliedMicro will feature the APM821xx family in a live NAS product demo at ESC Silicon Valley 2010, April 27 - 29 in Booth #2010.

"System providers in the NAS and media server space want high performance for their platforms, but they also want an optimized bill-of-materials (BOM) to reach price points that consumers find compelling," said Gopi Sirineni, Vice President of SMB and Consumer Business for AppliedMicro. "AppliedMicro's APM821xx family is ideal for this market because it can deliver outstanding networked storage performance with additional floating point acceleration for these cost-sensitive applications. End-users in the NAS market want new features, such as dynamic media archiving and retrieval, security and scalability and the APM821xx family delivers them with energy efficiency."

Home networking adoption in the US has passed the 50 percent mark and the Consumer Network Storage (CNS) market alone will grow at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 40 percent between 2009 and 2014, according to a recent report by industry research firm In-Stat.

"There is a tremendous amount of digital content coming into the home, whether it's music, photos or video content and it is being created by a range of portable devices, from optical disc, terrestrial sources, antenna, satellite and the Internet," said Norm Bogen, VP Research, Digital Entertainment, for In-Stat. "In the meantime, there are a number of devices in the home that access this content and right now, they are largely single-purpose devices with little interconnectivity between them. OEMs are looking to take advantage of this need with devices that store all the content and deliver it seamlessly to multiple users simultaneously. Cost points have made it difficult to gain traction, but AppliedMicro's ability to deliver performance at reduced costs could bring more robustness to the Consumer Network Storage market."

A high-degree of integration on the device, including a TCP/IP offload engine for networking applications and on-chip RAID 5 acceleration, reduces system part counts and board space for developers and helps them meet BOM goals. The APM821xx family also features a 128-bit high-bandwidth bus architecture with integrated PCI-Express, SATA, Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0 OTG interfaces. Best-in-class power dissipation is typically less than 3.5 watts in operational settings and less than 0.6W in standby situations. The chip is based on a Power Architecture 464 processor core with 256 KB Level 2 cache, FPU, 16-bit or 32-bit DDR-2 SDRAM memory controller, integrated turbo security engine and NAND Flash controller.

"QNAP's entry-level NAS servers make ideal choices for home and SOHO users due to an outstanding performance-to-price ratio," said Richard Lee, President of QNAP Systems, Inc. "When you consider that the device can be a file server, home media server, host websites, and backup all the computers on the network, it's a fantastic value. AppliedMicro's APM 821xx processor family has the robust performance metrics that our systems require to enable new feature sets, yet it meets the criteria for bill-of-materials costs for price-sensitive applications."

Customer Enablement

AppliedMicro enables a comprehensive ecosystem of tools and software support designed to help customers to accelerate time to market and lower development costs. The range of solutions for the APM821xx family includes evaluation kits, validation boards, and comprehensive NAS reference designs. Third party support for development tools is available from sources such as Abatron, WindRiver, Lauterbauch, and Green Hills.

Pricing and Availability

Samples of the AppliedMicro's APM821xx are available now, and production quantities are expected in the second quarter. Packaging is in a ROHS compliant, 18mm X 18mm, 345-ball FBGA. Limited sample quantities of the APM821xx family are available at less than $20 for quantities of 10,000 pieces.

AppliedMicro Overview

AppliedMicro is a global leader in energy conscious computing solutions for telco, enterprise, data center, consumer and SMB applications. With a 30-year heritage as an innovator in high-speed connectivity and high performance embedded processing, AMCC, now AppliedMicro, employs patented Power Architecture SoCs to provide energy efficient products that can deliver up to a 40 percent reduction in power consumption without sacrificing performance. With the launch of Samsung Seek, Sprint and Samsung are the first in the United States to trial a new recycling solution that enables customers to easily reuse the packaging to ship old wireless phones, batteries, accessories and data cards with a postage-paid paper mailing label. Customers who purchase the Cool Blue or Fantasy Pink Samsung Seek can use the label and box to repackage their old equipment for recycling in less than one minute and at no charge. Sprint will recycle both the equipment and the box. To compare the performance of this new solution, the Scarlet Red Samsung Seek will contain the traditional postage-paid envelope made of LDPE #4 recyclable plastic for customers to recycle their old wireless device.

Samsung Seek eco-friendly packaging:
- Several plastic elements – the inner tray, bags for literature and the battery, and mailing envelope – are replaced with paper-based solutions.
- Box and inner tray contain at least 90 percent post-consumer waste (PCW) paper fiber, are 100 percent recyclable, and come from sustainable forests. Top sheets and liners are chlorine-free, printed with soy inks, and have a water-based aqueous coating.
- Mailing label contains 30 percent PCW paper fiber, is 100 percent recyclable, has a water-based acrylic adhesive, and is attached with glue dots that are RoHS and REACH compliant.
- Literature band contains at least 30 percent PCW paper fiber and is 100 percent recyclable.

“Sprint is committed to environmental sustainability and product responsibility,”said Kevin Packingham, Sprint senior vice president-Product Development. “Each time customers use the postage-paid mailing label with the box to recycle an old device, they are helping keep electronic and packaging waste out of landfills and support Internet safety for kids. All net proceeds from the sale of recycled equipment collected will be used to fund and promote 4NetSafety, a charitable program of Sprint Project Connect™.”

Huawei and Dialog Telekom Deploy ngHLR in Sri Lanka

Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, and Dialog Telekom PLC ("Dialog"), the largest mobile carrier in Sri Lanka, announced the successful deployment of a next-generation Home Location Register ("ngHLR"). The deployment of ngHLR can serve 10 million subscribers in Sri Lanka and enable Dialog to realize centralized management, simplify its network, and support future subscriber growth.

Huawei' s ngHLR solution addresses the challenges operators face by enabling them to improve reliability of HLR networks and reduce the high OPEX of HLR. Huawei replaced four traditional HLRs in Dialog' s network with one pair of Huawei ngHLRs, which were deployed in two strategic locations: Union Place and Malabe. This solution enables seamless geographical redundancy and gives reliability of 99.9999%, thus greatly improves the stability of Dialog' s network. In addition, the deployment of Huawei' s ngHLR further simplifies Dialog' s network and increases operational efficiency. The intelligent and unified O&M functions reduce the complexity of maintenance. Moreover, Huawei' s ngHLR can smoothly evolve to become a Unified Subscriber Centre, the subscriber-centric data center across networks and applications, to meet Dialog' s full service operation requirements and the rapid market expansion of the future.

"Dialog is always engaged in providing world-class experiences for our growing customer base by continuously adopting leading network technology. Huawei' s ngHLR solution meets our requirement on subscriber data management," said Mr. Pradeep, CTO of Dialog. "This innovative solution has further enabled us to simplify network complexity, reduce operation cost, and provide reliable services to our customers."

"As part of our All-IP convergence strategy, our innovative ngHLR solution will enable operators like Dialog to realize centralized management, simplify network operation and structurally reduce OPEX," said Mr. Cuiwei, president of USC (Unified Subscriber Centre) business line, Huawei. "We are dedicated to assisting operators to enhance subscriber data management and we believe that the cooperation between Dialog and Huawei in ngHLR deployment will meet Dialog' s network development strategy and enhance the competitiveness of its network."

Huawei ngHLR, based on the ATCA ("Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture") platform, provides a maximum capacity of 200 million subscribers, significantly improves maintenance efficiency, lowers operating costs, and offers over 99.9999% reliability by sites load sharing mode. This solution also supports the evolution to USC ("Unified Subscriber Center"), in securing operator' s current capital investment. By the end of 2009, Huawei' s ngHLR solution has been deployed by more than 50 operators in 40 countries around the world. To date, Huawei ngHLR has achieved an accumulative shipment of more than 800 million licenses.
