AT&T Completes Acquisition of Divestiture Properties from Verizon Wireless

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Acquisition enhances AT&T's network coverage and connects rural Americans to leading-edge mobile broadband technologies.

AT&T* completed its acquisition of wireless assets from Verizon Wireless. The transaction enhances AT&T’s wireless network coverage in primarily rural areas in 79 service areas across 18 states. To secure regulatory approvals for its purchase of Alltel in 2009, Verizon Wireless agreed to divest the properties.

Once network transition work is completed, the approximately 1.6 million subscribers in these service areas will enjoy the benefits of AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network — the nation’s fastest. AT&T expects to roll out its 3G service to all of the acquired properties.

“Mobile broadband is changing how we live our lives and transforming every sector of business, and AT&T is leading the way,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “We’re excited that with this acquisition, AT&T will bring the benefits of mobile broadband to new subscribers. We mobilize everything for our customers by delivering the best 3G experience, the fastest 3G speeds nationwide, the most popular smartphones, an array of emerging devices like eReaders and netbooks, the ability to talk and browse the Web at the same time and access to more than 225,000 apps.”**

Integration Plans
The transaction extends AT&T’s wireless network coverage in primarily rural areas of Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming.

Over a period of approximately 12 months, AT&T will launch service on a market-by-market basis as network integration work is completed. For now, there are no changes to customers’ phone numbers, rate plans, network coverage, customer service contacts or processes for making monthly bill payments. During network integration, customers will have the opportunity to select a device comparable to their existing device at no additional cost. They may also choose an upgraded handset from AT&T’s exciting lineup of industry-leading devices.*** Existing AT&T customer contracts are not affected.

The company will inform subscribers of changes in advance and is committed to making the transition as easy and convenient as possible while working to deliver a high level of service to affected customers. Rebranding to AT&T will also occur on a market-by-market basis as service is launched.

Subscribers joining AT&T will enjoy significant benefits. Today, AT&T offers voice and data coverage reaching 97 percent of Americans, the broadest international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider; more applications running over its network; and access to the nation’s fastest 3G network. Unlike some other wireless networks, AT&T’s 3G network enables subscribers to talk and e-mail or surf the Web at the same time. And thanks to the industry’s leading lineup of devices, more smartphone users have chosen AT&T than any other wireless carrier. Subscribers who choose smartphones and LaptopConnect cards with a current DataConnect Plan will also have access to AT&T’s entire nationwide Wi-Fi hot spot network at no additional charge.****

AT&T is also the undisputed leader in emerging consumer devices and a mobile broadband network of choice for most major consumer categories such as eReaders, netbooks, personal navigation devices and digital photo frames. Subscribers in the acquired service areas will have even more opportunities to take advantage of the connectivity delivered by this new class of mobile broadband devices.

Agreement Terms
Under terms of the agreement, AT&T is purchasing the assets for approximately $2.35 billion in cash. The transaction primarily represents former Alltel assets, but it also includes assets from Verizon Wireless and the former Rural Cellular Corporation.

The transaction adds customers and enhances network coverage and is expected to deliver substantial long-term stockholder value. Wireless is the largest growth driver and value creator in the telecommunications industry, and this acquisition continues AT&T’s strong track record of investing in growth. In 2009 AT&T’s capital investments totaled $17.3 billion, and AT&T plans to invest between $18 and 19 billion in 2010, assuming a favorable regulatory environment, including an increase of approximately $2 billion over 2009 levels in wireless network and supporting wireline backhaul investments.

AT&T Wins Frost & Sullivan 2010 Product Leadership of the Year Award for Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery Services North America

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

T&T Business Continuity Services Excel in Functionality, Innovation, Value, Quality, and Acceptance.

With the reality of man-made and natural disasters, businesses and organizations across the U.S. are responding more to the need for business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR) planning. Communication service providers (CSPs) with the most well-defined BC/DR portfolios are looking to take on a greater role in enterprise BC/DR, especially in cases where they are the primary network provider, according to Frost & Sullivan.

AT&T* has been awarded the Frost & Sullivan 2010 Product Leadership of the Year Award in Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery Services North America, recognized for its business continuity services features and functionality, innovation, acceptance in the marketplace, customer value, and quality. This award is based on Frost & Sullivan’s recent research of CSP BC/DR strategies and portfolios, in which the CSP that best fulfills the role is AT&T.

“Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plans are about business survivability. In the case of a disruption, large or small, BC/DR needs to address topics, including technology, organizational decision-making, workflow continuity, and communication,” said Lynda Stadtmueller, Senior Research Analyst, Business Communications, Frost & Sullivan. “In defining its portfolio, AT&T has taken a broad, comprehensive view of BC/DR, offering a wide range of valuable services as well as professional consulting services and guidelines that help a company identify critical business processes that go beyond IT.”

“AT&T excels in educating the enterprise space on the risks and need for BC/DR planning and offering services that match its customers’ needs, risk tolerance, and budget.”

AT&T offers a wide array of business continuity services, encompassing disaster planning, vulnerability management, recovery preparedness, and communications readiness. AT&T Business Continuity Services are comprehensive, providing enterprises with business-impact analysis, risk assessments, enterprise hosting, cloud computing, application management services, a full continuum of storage solutions, high-availability network solutions and network, and IT security services.

AT&T also conducts several Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) exercises a year – the next one planned for July 13 – 14 in San Jose. These exercises simulate major disasters, and involve rolling out dozens of equipment-filled trucks that act as AT&T’s mobile central offices, satellite transponders, and cell towers. They are designed to test, refine, and strengthen AT&T’s business continuity and disaster recovery services in order to minimize network downtime. By simulating large-scale disasters and network service disruptions, AT&T can apply and refine best practices for rapidly restoring communications to government and business customers.

Additionally, AT&T recently released the results of its annual study1 on business continuity and disaster recovery preparedness for U.S. businesses in the private sector, now in its ninth consecutive year. The study found that businesses across the U.S. are responding more to the need for business continuity planning in which 83% of organizations responding to the survey have a business continuity plan in place, up 14% in the past five years.

AT&T Announces Illinois Broadband Expansion Plans Following Gov. Quinn's Approval of Groundbreaking Telecommunications Law

Governor's Action Spurs Immediate Plans for 80 New Cell Sites, Increased Wireless Network Capacity, and Expanded Rural Connectivity; Creates Climate for Added Discretionary Investment in Illinois.

AT&T* unveiled its Illinois wired and wireless network investment plans for 2010, which include plans for more than 80 new cell sites and the upgrade of nearly 300 additional cell sites to 3G throughout the state.

The announcement comes on the heels of Gov. Pat Quinn’s signing of the state’s new modern telecommunications law designed to attract private sector investment in broadband and wireless to meet consumer demands and attract jobs across all sectors of the Illinois economy.

“With the stroke of a pen, Governor Quinn made Illinois an attractive place for AT&T to invest in broadband, wireless and emerging technologies,” said Paul La Schiazza, president, AT&T Illinois. “His leadership in broadband coverage and job creation cannot be understated.”

Public Act 96-0927, which updates Illinois’ 25-year-old telecommunications law, was sponsored by State Rep. Kevin McCarthy (D – Orland Park) and State Sen. Michael Bond (D – Grayslake) and co-sponsored by State Rep. Mike Bost (R – Murphysboro) and State Sen. Randy Hultgren (R – Winfield). It passed the General Assembly unanimously. The law was crafted to attract private sector investment in new technologies by leveling the playing field for all telecommunications providers.

“Illinois has created more new jobs than any other Midwestern state this year, and we'll continue putting more people to work by encouraging new investment in the latest broadband and wireless technologies,” said Governor Quinn, a long-time champion of broadband access. “ Today's announcement ensures that more Illinois consumers and businesses across the state will have access to enhanced broadband technology, which is essential to expanding our 21st century economy.”

The planned wireless network enhancement strategy is part of AT&T’s 2010 wireline and wireless capital investment, which is expected to be in the $18 billion to $19 billion range companywide, assuming the regulatory environment remains favorable, an increase of between 5 and 10 percent over 2009. This planned amount also includes an increase of about $2 billion in capital expenditures for wireless and backhaul related to AT&T’s wireless network.

From 2007 through 2009, AT&T’s total capital investment in its Illinois wireless and wireline networks was nearly $3.6 billion. From 2007 through 2009, AT&T’s wireless network investment in Illinois was nearly $975 million.

AT&T has also been working with policy makers to support a national broadband plan that ensures broadband access to every American by 2014. This significant investment in infrastructure and jobs is possible due to public policy that enables companies to compete and offer the innovative services that consumers are increasingly demanding.

“With his signature, Governor Quinn opened the doors to increased private sector investment in broadband, wireless and other new technologies for Illinois,” said La Schiazza. “Governor Quinn, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, the four legislatives leaders — Senate President Cullerton, House Speaker Michael J. Madigan, Senate Republican Leader Sen. Christine Radogno and House Republican leader Rep. Tom Cross – as well as every member of the General Assembly has in this new law created a positive economic environment to attract business and retain and grow jobs.”

Today’s announcement builds on AT&T’s 2009 wireless investment, during which it added 70 new cell sites in Illinois and upgraded more than 220 existing sites to 3G. AT&T also completed a substantial upgrade of its 3G mobile broadband network in the Chicago area with the deployment of additional wireless spectrum in the 850 MHz band. More than 700 cell towers across the Chicagoland area were updated as part of the spectrum deployment. In addition, more than 40 strategically placed distributed antennas and microcell sites were upgraded to the 850 MHz spectrum in the downtown Chicago Loop to provide additional coverage.

Wireless data traffic on the AT&T network has grown more than 5,000 percent over the past three years, largely attributed to today’s advanced smartphones that are generating dramatically increasing volumes of network traffic.

“We’re seeing advanced smartphones driving up to 10 times the amount of usage of other devices on average,” said Dave Fine, vice president and general manager for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets in Illinois. “Despite these unprecedented increases in wireless data traffic, AT&T’s network investments and upgrades have enabled us to continue to deliver the nation’s fastest 3G network.”

AT&T recently completed a software upgrade at 3G cell sites nationwide that prepares the nation’s fastest 3G network for even faster speeds. The deployment of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is the first of multiple initiatives in AT&T’s network enhancement strategy designed to provide customers with an enhanced mobile broadband experience, both today and in the future.

In addition to the HSPA 7.2 software, initial deployment of backhaul is already underway in the six U.S. cities announced in 2009 as initial HSPA 7.2 markets, including Chicago, with capabilities being turned up on a site-by-site basis. Further backhaul deployment will continue in these markets and begin in additional markets throughout the nation.

Faster 3G speeds are scheduled to become available this year and in 2011 as AT&T combines the new technology with our second initiative to dramatically increase the number of high-speed backhaul connections to cell sites, primarily with fiber-optic connections, adding capacity from cell sites to the AT&T backbone network.

The backhaul upgrades are also a key step in the evolution toward next-generation LTE mobile broadband technology. AT&T is designing its new backhaul deployments to accommodate both faster 3G and future LTE deployments. AT&T currently plans to begin trials of LTE technology this year, and to begin LTE deployment in 2011, matching industry time lines for broader availability of compelling devices and supporting network equipment.

AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T offers 3G data roaming in more than 115 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 220 countries. The technology also provides customers the ability to talk and surf the Internet at the same time.

AT&T is also an industry leader in Wi-Fi with the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network, which complements its wired broadband and wireless 3G networks, offering Wi-Fi connectivity in more than 20,000 U.S. hotspots — including retail stores and restaurants from coast-to-coast. A full list of AT&T Wi-Fi locations is available at www.attwifi.com.

AT&T operates nearly 70 AT&T-owned retail locations in Illinois. AT&T’s products and services are also available at a number of other authorized dealers and national retail locations.

For more information about AT&T’s wireless coverage in Illinois, or anywhere in the United States, consumers can go to http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/. The online tool can measure the quality of coverage based on a street address, intersection, ZIP code or even a landmark.

AT&T Drives Results in 2009 as Part of Multi-Year Sustainability Investments to Strengthen Communities

AT&T 2009 Citizenship and Sustainability Report Highlights Contribution of 8.5 Million Volunteer Hours, Initiatives to Cut Energy Intensity by Nearly 24% and Investment of More Than $66 Million to Address High School Drop-Out Crisis.

AT&T* announced the release of its 2009 Citizenship and Sustainability Report highlighting the company’s progress toward up to $865 million in multi-year commitments for important education, environmental and volunteerism programs that help strengthen communities, stimulate economic growth and ensure America’s global competitiveness. The report also showcases the company’s relentless passion for innovation - a promise to use the power of its networks to drive human progress.

“At AT&T, we constantly challenge ourselves to find better, smarter ways to run our business – and that extends to being an innovative and responsible corporate citizen,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and CEO. “Our new Citizenship and Sustainability Report shares our progress and underlines our commitment to drive these initiatives with the same leadership and passion we bring to every part of our business.”

The report highlights a variety of initiatives that help make AT&T’s business stronger, as well as strengthen communities across the country:

* Reduce Energy Use: In 2009, AT&T built on its ongoing effort to better manage energy use, reduce the amount of energy needed to carry data over its networks and invest in alternative energy. Specific efforts included:
o Appointing a new energy director to oversee companywide energy management efforts and lead AT&T’s Energy Council.
o Achieving a 23.8 percent reduction in energy intensity, exceeding the 15 percent reduction target set in 2008.
o Joining the U.S. Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now LEADER initiative with a pledge to reduce energy intensity by 25 percent by 2019.
o Deploying 970 alternative-fuel vehicles as part of the company’s up-to-$565 million commitment to deploy more than 15,000 fuel efficient vehicles through 2018.
* Maintain a Competitive and Diverse Workforce: Recognizing that the high school drop-out crisis impacts the ability of American businesses to sustain an educated, talented and diverse work force, AT&T remains committed to its $100 million Aspire program. The program seeks to improve high school retention rates and prepare the next generation of U.S. workers. In 2009, AT&T continued to support Aspire with initiatives including:
o Eighty-two local community programs initially funded in 2008 through Aspire completed their first round of the evaluation process in 2009.
o By the end of 2009, AT&T reached 23,000 students in more than 200 cities through our job shadowing initiative with Junior Achievement.
o AT&T funded national research that explored practitioners’ perspectives on the high school drop-out crisis. That research and prior research with dropouts and parents revealed disparities in how these three key audiences view the crisis. In response, we underwrote follow-up face-to-face research that included all three groups. The results of that research effort were released in March 2010.
o As of year-end 2009, 27,000 stakeholders in 44 states participated in 84 drop-out prevention summits in 46 cities sponsored in part by AT&T and organized by America’s Promise Alliance. The summits were designed to bring together community stakeholders to explore the root of the high school drop-out crisis.

“The United States has one of the lowest graduation rates of any industrialized nation in the world, and when thousands of students leave school each day that loss is felt beyond the classroom to impact whole communities,” said Marguerite Kondracke, president and CEO, America’s Promise Alliance. “AT&T understands this, and their Aspire program is helping us not only bring communities together to address the dropout crisis, but engage young people themselves in the development of solutions for it.”

* Community Engagement: In 2009, AT&T employees and retirees volunteered more than 8.5 million hours of time – valued at more than $176 million ¹ – to community activities across the country. To further encourage employee volunteerism AT&T launched:
o A new employee volunteer Web site called AT&T Cares that enables employees to register and join individual, group and companywide volunteer initiatives.
o The AT&T/YourCause.com online community that enables employees to create their own personalized Web pages to raise funds for charities of their choice. In the first three months since the launch, AT&T employees raised more than $98,000 for charities through AT&T/YourCause pages.

“We’ve always understood that our company is inextricably linked to the world around us,” said Charlene Lake, senior vice president of public affairs and chief sustainability officer. “We are committed to continue challenging the status quo so we can address the long-term needs of both our business and the communities where we live and work. We realize there’s more work ahead of us that needs to be done, but we’re proud of the progress we made in 2009.”

Lake said AT&T will strive to further embed sustainability principles into the company’s business strategy, improve reporting and further engage employees in these efforts.

The complete 2009 Citizenship and Sustainability Report, Connecting for a Sustainable Future, can be downloaded online at www.att.com/csr. An executive summary is also available online.

This report is aligned with the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) G3 Guidelines and AT&T self-declared the report to application level C. The GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines provide a framework for organizations to report on their social, environmental and economic performance and was used to develop AT&T’s report. AT&T also details in the report a set of goals to help guide and measure its progress. A complete list of AT&T’s citizenship and sustainability goals is available at www.att.com/csr.

AT&T, Verizon Global Wholesale to Keynote at Light Reading's Backhaul & Core Convergence Conference for Mobile Operators, Plus Featured Speakers From

Tower Cloud, WCAI, Level 3 & More.

NEW YORK -- UBM TechWeb's Light Reading (www.lightreading.com), the largest research-led media company serving the global communications marketplace, in collaboration with Heavy Reading (www.heavyreading.com), its prestigious market research division, will be hosting their tenth annual Backhaul Strategies for Mobile Operators Conference on June 23, 2010 in New York City. Backhaul Strategies & Core Convergence for Mobile Operators, co-chaired by Heavy Reading Senior Analysts Gabriel Brown and Patrick Donegan along with Senior Consultant Berge Ayvazian, is being expanded to embrace the theme of core convergence, but will again focus primarily on the progress that wireless operators are making in migrating their backhaul networks for dramatically increasing volumes and types of data traffic. Backhaul Strategies for Mobile Operators 2009 in New York was one of the industry's most successful backhaul events in 2009, with nearly 225 registrants and 115 attendees, of whom over 60 percent were from service providers or cable operators. Expected attendance for 2010 is between 200 and 300 attendees.

Backhaul Strategies & Core Convergence for Mobile Operators will feature keynote speaker Yiannis Argyropoulos, Ph.D., Architecture & Planning, AT&T, who will discuss AT&T's strategy for equipping its backhaul network to support GSM, EDGE, HSPA, and LTE traffic using fiber and next-generation microwave equipment. Also keynoting is Larry O'Neill, Manager of Ethernet Services, Verizon Global Wholesale, who will give a brief overview of the wireless market, detailing the requirements of the wireless carriers while citing the various ways that Verizon is addressing those needs with its Ethernet suite of products, also addressing where the wireless backhaul market is going in the future.

"Most wireless operators have largely figured out how they want to evolve their network to support the new data traffic volumes. But they are still only at the tip of the iceberg in terms of making all their final partner selections and executing on their roadmaps at the operational level," said Patrick Donegan. "Operators also need to consider adjusting their strategies in the light of new opportunities and challenges presented by LTE and WiMax such as the prospective convergence of core and backhaul elements."

Featured speakers include Fred B. Campbell Jr., President & CEO, Wireless Communications Association International; Ron Mudry, CEO, Tower Cloud; Howard Susskind, Senior Director Customer Network Planning, Level 3 Communications; and Association Sponsor speaker Rami Yaron, Mobile Backhaul Sub-Committee Member & MBH Ambassador for the Americas, MEF. AT&T Investment in Mobility Management Services for Multinational Companies Recognised in Industry Analyst Report

AT&T1’s strategy of providing mobility management services to multinational companies has been recognised in the latest report from industry analyst firm IDC – 'Operator Mobility Strategies for Multinational Corporations'2.AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc.

According to IDC, “AT&T has done well to expand some core mobility capabilities globally, tightly integrate some of these domains with its core portfolio across WAN, security, and UCC, and promote its carrier/technology neutrality approach outside of the U.S. There is no doubt it is a strong player in the U.S. and is doing very well in expanding into EMEA and Asia/Pacific.”

The report finds that that the recession of 2008–2009 has put many organisations under increased pressure to reduce their global telecoms spend. While many companies feel that they have their traditional voice and data services under control, mobility services remain largely unmanaged. Over the past 18 months, many global operators have built global mobility strategies for their multinational customers.

IDC concludes that AT&T, “has an improving portfolio and has some big wins under its belt, and so much more is to come from AT&T in the next 12 months.”

AT&T Global Mobile Management Services support the full spectrum of a customer’s mobile service management needs through multi-carrier management, standardized operations and consolidated reporting. AT&T already manages tens of thousands of wireless lines for subscribers located in more than 40 countries worldwide on all major continents – and expects to expand this managed service to subscribers located in more than 60 countries this year.

This a flexible offering which can meet the evolving needs of a global organization by driving lower management and mobility service costs. AT&T provides a wireless voice service-based savings commitment to customers of this service.

AT&T Global Mobile Management Services offers enterprise customers with more than 10,000 mobile users the ability to:

* Reduce mobile service spend through multi-carrier management and consolidation of users to preferred carriers, effective policy enforcement, and active telecom expense management.
* Have AT&T act as the single point of contact for managing and tracking qualified mobility transactions and escalating network outages, provisioning errors and other incidents and issues to the appropriate providers.
* Increase visibility and control into the use of mobile services through consolidated usage and spend reporting.

AT&T is an industry leader in serving large business customers, serving thousands of enterprise business customers, including all of the Fortune 1000 and multinational companies on six continents.

New Study: Telepresence Can Reduce Corporate CO2 Emissions by 5.5 Million Metric Tons and Deliver $19 Billion in Financial Benefits to

U.S. and U.K. Economies by 2020.

Businesses Can Achieve a Return on Investment in as Little as 15 Months.

According to a new study of large companies using telepresence technology, U.S. and U.K. businesses that substitute some business travel with telepresence can cut CO2 emissions by nearly 5.5 million metric tons in total – the greenhouse gas equivalent of removing more than one million passenger vehicles from the road for one year – and achieve total economy-wide financial benefits of almost $19 billion, by 2020.

Telepresence is a rapidly growing and increasingly popular technology that enables groups of people to meet and collaborate in multiple locations worldwide while feeling as if they were all in the same room together.

The study, "The Telepresence Revolution," was commissioned by the Carbon Disclosure Project by AT&T*.

Other conclusions of the study determined a business with $1 billion or more in annual revenue implementing four telepresence rooms could:

1. Achieve a financial return on investment in as little as 15 months;
2. Save nearly 900 business trips in the first year of using telepresence; and
3. Reduce emissions by 2,271 metric tons over five years—the greenhouse gas equivalent of removing 434 passenger vehicles from the road for one year.

The study also revealed that telepresence technology can help speed decision-making, improve employee productivity, and provide workers with a better work-life balance.

The study was produced by Verdantix, an independent analyst research firm. Verdantix conducted in-depth interviews with executives of 15 Global 500 firms that are early adopters of telepresence – including Accenture, Aviva, EMC and Microsoft – and used the findings of those interviews to develop a new, detailed model to calculate the financial return on investment (ROI) and carbon reductions of telepresence. The model looks at projected telepresence adoption among companies with $1 billion or more in annual revenue and forecasts how the financial and carbon reduction benefits achieved by early adopters of telepresence would translate into economy-wide financial and environmental benefits in the U.S. and U.K. by 2020.

Carbon emission reductions among U.S. companies with annual revenues over $1 billion were forecast at approximately 4.6 million metric tons by 2020, the equivalent of removing more than 875,000 passenger vehicles from the road for one year. Among large U.K companies, carbon emission reductions by 2020 were forecast at approximately 940,000 metric tons, the equivalent of removing more than 179,000 passenger vehicles from the road for one year. Total economy wide financial benefits that could be generated by 2020 as a result of large companies using telepresence in place of some business travel were forecast at over $15 billion for the U.S. and almost $4 billion in the U.K.

“Companies that invest in carbon cutting technologies and re-engineer the way they do business will not only be better placed to succeed as we transition to a low-carbon economy but can experience considerable business benefits during this transition,” said CDP chief executive officer Paul Dickinson. “Telepresence is a good example of a low-carbon solution that can bring financial savings and increase productivity while reducing emissions.”

Daniel T. Walsh, senior vice president of marketing services, AT&T Business Solutions said, “Business customers have spoken and their feedback is very powerful: Telepresence helps companies run their businesses better while allowing them to reduce their carbon emissions.

“This, plus the dramatic and speedy return on investment suggested in the findings are prompting companies to embrace this game-changing technology,” he added. “Over the last year, AT&T has helped customers deploy hundreds of rooms globally, a trend that we expect will continue as companies start to reap the many benefits of telepresence usage.”

In addition to the industry forecasts, the report cited benefits of telepresence already achieved by companies participating in the survey:

* Sak Nayagam, head of climate change solutions, Sustainability Services EALA at Accenture, said, "Since adopting telepresence, Accenture has expanded its network to include more than 50 telepresence rooms across the globe. The travel saved through their use would have accounted for 6,200 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions globally from November 2007 through August 2009. For us, it is not so much about eliminating travel but travelling smarter and maximising the time and value of our workforce."
* Zelda Bentham, senior environment manager of global insurance company Aviva, said, “We compared executives travelling from the nine months prior to telepresence with the nine months following implementation. From an air travel perspective, we observed a 25 percent carbon footprint reduction.”

The study picks up where the “SMART 2020” report, a separate initiative authored by the Climate Group in 2008, left off. “SMART 2020” identified four key areas, including travel substitution, where greater use of the products and services from the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) sector could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 15% by 2020.
