Google to Stop Selling Games in Korean Android Market Tweet

Google will soon stop offering games for its Android operating system in South Korea, in response to an order from local authorities to stop distribution of unregulated content, the company’s Seoul office said.

The decision to shut down the game category from the South Korean Android market was made “to abide by local law,” Google Korea spokeswoman Park Sun-kyung said by phone. All video, computer and Web-based games sold in South Korea are required to be reviewed and rated by the state-run Games Ratings Board.

Earlier in March, the rating board ordered Google to stop offering unregulated games. But Google found it “impossible” to have all games sold on Android rated by the local regulator, as the marketplace is operated around the world on the same platform, according to a notice sent to Seoul officials.

Completing the shutdown will take about one month, the Mountain View, California-based company said.

The measure will prevent owners of Android-based smartphones in South Korea from accessing some 4,400 games. Handset makers like LG Electronics Inc., Motorola Inc., Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB and Samsung Electronics Co. already sell or plan to start selling Android phones this year.

Apple, which runs its App Store for iPhone users, also shut down its game category to South Korean users, refusing to have its games reviewed by the board. South Korean game software makers list their game products in the App Store’s entertainment category for this reason.

Many South Korean iPhone users also own a secondary account set outside Korea to download the thousands of games available abroad.

The Sony Ericsson Aino U10i doesn't bring anything new to the table with its moderately strong vibro alert, a bit too loud ring tones and decent call quality.

This device is actually a twin of W995, added with a touch-sensitive screen that works only in the closed state. How many people do need such a limited screen size? It seems to be sensor-like, but not always. The confusion arouses at once. The answer is the device sales – only a few need such a functionality. The device is sold even worse than the Satio, the count goes on hundreds of units throughout the country in a month (Russia).

The reason for such a moderate perception of the U10i lies in the fact that you can repeat the marketing formulae as a prey, but the consumer chooses the best quality / price ratio. By the time of the Aino release the market has already had similar devices, for example, Samsung S8300, and they were in the stage of decline, the withdrawal from the market. The same Samsung actually has been leaving the market since January this year, as the company squeezed from the model everything possible; its sales in April 2009, however, were not bad.

In fact, in the form of Aino we are offered a semi-finished product, in which programmers managed to implement only part of the functions for work with the touchscreen on the platform A200. In late 2009 the stability of the phone was up in the air, the new weaving has clarified this issue, and today the device is relatively free from problems. It should also be noted that the A300 in the way it is implemented in the Aino is not too fast, there are sluggishness in menus and slow-downs when the memory card has a lot of files. One has to put up with it.

Anyway, the fact that the company has reduced the number of announcements of the A300 handsets shows that its managers realize the limitation of this approach. Ultimately Sony Ericsson’s attempt to jump into leaving train of touch-sensitive handsets with the help of the platform A300 has failed and now the company is oriented to Android.

Should we compare the capabilities of the two OS directly the Windows Mobile is greatly superior functionality-wise but not in terms of interface. Nokia has remained tight-lipped on speculation that it will release a tablet to compete in the market opened up by the release of the iPad.

It refused to comment on remarks by Rodman Redshaw analyst Ashok Kumar, close to Nokia’s technology partners.

He said that Nokia was working with suppliers and design manufacturers on a touchscreen design to be ready as soon as this Autumn.

It would mean that Nokia would enter a tablet race created by Apple and which will soon have rival devices from the likes of HP, Microsoft and Dell.

He said to TheStreet: “Nokia hasn't fielded any breakaway products in years," says Kumar. "This is a new window, and Nokia had better be at the starting gate if and when the product category takes off."

To all extents and purposes, Nokia has been left behind in developing high-end smartphone devices comparable to the iPhone and HTC’s, replying on Symbian-based devices.

It has done a little bit better in the netbook market though with the release of the Nokia Booklet 3G. Also Nokia still dominates the mobile phone market in general, with a huge market share over the rest.

It still unclear whether ‘in-between’ products like the iPad, marketed as between a mobile and a netbook, will be seen as a fad or a trend will that will last.

It has its supporters though, such as Rupert Murdoch who sees devices like the iPad as the future.

Microsoft to launch 'Project Pink' phones next week Tweet

Microsoft is set to announce its long-awaited "Project Pink" phones early next week, sources familiar with the matter said, as the world's largest software company attempts to gain traction in the growing market for young smartphone users.

The mobile phones, to be sold in the US by mobile operator Verizon Wireless, are being targeted at heavy users of social network sites, according to sources. They will have a different name when the launch is officially announced.

In photos leaked to a tech blog last month, the new phones appear to be stylish, updated versions of Microsoft's Sidekick device, which is popular with the youth market.

The new phones, which likely won't be on the market until summer, are to be made by Sidekick manufacturer Sharp Corp, sources said.

Microsoft has sent invitations to media to attend an event in San Francisco next Monday, but declined to comment further. A representative of Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between U.S. phone company Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group, also declined comment.

The new phone does not appear to be a central part of Microsoft's main thrust in the mobile phone market, which is centered on the revamp of the Windows software it licenses to handset makers, which will be available later this year.

Microsoft hopes its Windows Phone 7, launched with great fanfare in February, will win back share from BlackBerry maker Research in Motion and iPhone maker Apple, and beat back newcomer Google Inc, which is making ground with Android-powered phones and its own Nexus One.

Microsoft is losing share fast in the U.S. smartphone market, according to tech research firm comScore, dropping 4 percentage points to 15.1 per cent between November and February.

Ahead of it are Apple, with 25.4 per cent, and Research in Motion with 42.1 percent. Google is the fastest-growing rival, now holding 9 per cent of the market.

The Sidekick, with its Java-based operating system, were never very adept at media, but these devices have a version of Windows Mobile inside, paving the way for the Zune connection.

As noted for some time, these new phones are part of a broader effort by Microsoft to get back in the phone game. The other part--the larger part--of that strategy is the overhaul of Windows Phone with Windows Phone 7. Those devices, which will be made by a variety of handset makers, aren't due out until the holidays.

Years in the making, Windows Phone 7 is based on the Windows CE core, which has powered other versions of Windows Phone (and Windows Mobile before that). However, the software has a completely new look and interface and won't run programs written for prior versions of the operating system.

The Pure and Turtle phones, which are part of Microsoft's long-running "Pink" project, also have Windows CE at their core as well, but aren't likely to run programs written for either current crop of Windows Phones or those written for Windows Phone 7.

The new devices would also appear to mark the end of the road for the Sidekick's Java-based operating system. That phone is still available for T-Mobile's network but has fallen further from view after a high-profile, extended outage last year.

Nokia Aims a Tablet at Apple Tweet

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Nokia(NOK) is out to prove again that it can be late, wrong and yet still willing to stick its neck out in areas where growth could be.

The Finnish phone giant is gearing up to enter the tablet race, looking to contend with the Apple (AAPL) iPad and other tech giants.

Nokia is working with suppliers and design manufacturers on a touch-screen tablet to have available as early as this fall, according to Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar, who is close to Nokia's technology partners. Nokia declined to comment.

The move, if true, would put Nokia head-to-head with tablet makers like Apple, Hewlett-Packard(HPQ), Microsoft(MSFT), Google(GOOG) and Dell (DELL), to name a few. The plunge into tablets would also mark yet another attempt by the top mobile phone maker to develop Internet devices for a market beyond cell phones.

"Nokia hasn't fielded any breakaway products in years," says Kumar. "This is a new window, and Nokia had better be at the starting gate if and when the product category takes off," Kumar added.

Apple's sensational foray into tablets is a bold bet on an iffy category. With the iPad, Apple hopes to sell people -- who already have smartphones and laptops -- a new in-between product.

Fans argue that the fingertip-controlled, touch-screen tablet is a fundamental technology change that delivers media and applications in entirely new ways. Skeptics say that the iPad fad will fade as the mass market thinks twice about buying a $500 toy.
Nokia's tablet roots

Nokia, oddly, was a tablet pioneer in the early 2000s with its N770 handheld Internet device. The product failed to take off. Then last year, Nokia flopped in the netbook market with its Booklet 3G.

But this time around, Nokia has regrouped around a new operating system called MeeGo and a partnership with chip giant Intel (INTC).

"Getting a strong Intel backing here could be an important advantage," says MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen, who sees the Nokia tablet as part of an array of mobile computers.

Though initial Apple iPad sales were not exactly blockbuster, coming in at 300,000 on the first day, the tally was a respectable start. The proof of the tablet's categorical success will come if the common consumer, beyond Apple's core followers, gravitates to the iPad.
