HORSHAM, Pa. – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) announced the deployment of its innovative passive optical LAN (POL) solution at the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) at Stony Brook University in New York. Motorola teamed with Verizon Business and ADC to implement an all-fiber enterprise LAN infrastructure solution which provides a secure, energy-efficient and highly cost-effective alternative over traditional enterprise LAN architectures.
Motorola’s POL solution provides a great option for enterprises interested in significant capital and operational cost savings propelled by a greater than 50 percent reduction in five-year total cost of ownership over today’s traditional LAN architectures, including more than 70 percent savings in the cost of service agreements and 40 percent in energy savings*. POL simplifies LAN management, allows for the optimization of IT resources and provides IT leadership the ability to focus on strategic initiatives driving advances in wireless and information technologies.
“Motorola’s POL solution offers a compelling case to those looking to achieve IT savings while expanding and simplifying their network,” said Joe Cozzolino, senior vice president and general manager, Motorola Mobile Devices and Home. “We are pleased to include our innovative POL solution in CEWIT’s advanced educational and research center.”
Verizon Business provided integration services and support surrounding the implementation while ADC provided all of the fiber-structured cabling components for the POL implementation at the Center.
Established in 2003, the Center is a partnership between the State of New York and industry-leading businesses. Its new facility, located in the Stony Brook University Research and Development Park, provides researchers with 100,000 square feet of additional lab space, allowing the Center to stay on the leading edge of wireless and information technology research while expanding into new technology areas.
Motorola’s POL solution includes the Motorola AXS1800 enterprise aggregation switch, the Motorola ONT1120GE intelligent POL workgroup terminal (WGT), the WT21004 WGT with power-over-Ethernet (PoE) and the Motorola AXSvision advanced management system for the enterprise.
Benefits of POL include:
* Rapid ROI and low TCO at half the cost of copper-based LANs
* Easy installation and operation
* Highly secure
* All-fiber reliability
* Reduced impact on the environment as a small enterprise can potentially reduce LAN energy dependency by 40 percent and a large enterprise by potentially 60 percent using Motorola’s POL solution
