Developing the Potential of Children to Grow Optimally

Saturday, February 6, 2010

Basically every parent wanted kids healthy, intelligent, and good behavior in their lives everyday. That way, someday they will become children who excel and resilient to face the challenges of the future. However, please be aware that such a superior generation will not grow by itself. They really need a fertile environment is created for that purpose, which allows the potential that children can grow more optimally so that healthy, intelligent, and well behaved.

In this case, the parent holding a very important role. The atmosphere of loving, willing to accept children as they are, appreciate the potential of children, and provide a rich stimulus for all aspects of child development, whether cognitive, affective, and psychomotor, all it really is the real answer to the growing generation of excellence in the future. However, the formation of a perfect child like that seem to be hampered. Therefore, currently there are children in a pattern confined to the classroom learning in a monotonous and closed, full of rules and pressure. The result, children become stressed and had no opportunity to develop themselves further.

Google Nexus One-Style Active Noise Cancellation Boosts MEMS Microphone Market

The introductions of Google's Nexus One and Motorola's Droid marked the arrival of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology in the cell phone market, a development that is expected to boost the market for Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) microphones, according to iSuppli Corp.

To implement ANC, at least two microphones are required, and sometimes many more are employed. Partly due to the rising use of ANC in cell phones and other devices, iSuppli has raised its global MEMS microphone forecast from its previous outlook issued in September.

iSuppli now predicts 1.2 billion MEMS microphones will be shipped worldwide in 2013, compared to the previous forecast of 1.1 billion.

"ANC reduces or eliminates ambient noise, silencing background sounds that can make it hard to concentrate, sleep or listen to music or engage in cell phone conversations," said Jérémie Bouchaud, director and principal analyst, MEMS, for iSuppli. "ANC leverages recent progress made by audio CODEC companies like Audience or Wolfson Microelectronics in dedicated noise-suppression Integrated Circuits (ICs). ANC leverages MEMS microphones which are preferred over traditional Electret Condenser Microphones (ECM) for that function."

ANC headsets became popular in 2009. Sony last year introduced a headset providing up to 99 percent ambient noise cancellation. The company at CES 2010 also introduced the world's first earbud with noise cancellation.

Nokia recently presented an ANC-equipped headset using 10 MEMS microphones, illustrating how noise cancellation can drive higher volumes. Furthermore, these applications often use higher-performance microphones that command larger price tags. However, the arrival of ANC in the 1.1 billion unit mobile phone market represents a much more attractive growth opportunity for MEMS microphones.

iSuppli's recent teardowns of the Nexus One and Droid uncovered two MEMS microphones from Knowles Electronics in each phone.

ANC can improve the quality of mobile calls in noisy environments by suppressing background noise, intermittent sounds and echoes. The technology also can automatically adjust voice volume and equalization during calls to adapt to local noise interference. Furthermore, AND is suitable for voice commands, a feature gaining popularity in mobile handsets.

MEMS microphones offer significant advantages in ACN applications compared to traditional Electret Condenser Microphones (ECMs). These advantages include better performance in terms of size, sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio and suitability for use with digital signal processors that are required to implement ANC.

The MEMS microphone market also is benefitting from new applications like MP3 players. iSuppli's Teardown Analysis Service recent opened the last iPod nano and found a high-performance and ultra-thin MEMS microphone from Analog Devices. that supports the video camera in the iPod. Laptops also offer also a great opportunity as more and more of them are integrating two digital MEMS microphones.

Google's Android code deleted from Linux kernel

'Go fork yourself!'

After removing Google's Android driver code from the Linux kernel, Novell Fellow and Linux developer Greg Kroah-Hartman has argued that the mobile OS is incompatible with the project's main tree.

Kroah-Hartman deleted the Android drivers on December 11 - Android code is no more as of version 2.6.33 of the kernel release - and yesterday, with a post to his personal blog, he explained the move in detail.

"No one cared about the code, so it was removed," writes Kroah-Hartman. "As I've stated before, code in the staging tree needs to be worked on to be merged to the main kernel tree, or it will be deleted."

But the larger problem, he continues, is that Android uses a new lock type, new hooks for its "sometimes bizarre" security model, and a revamped framebuffer driver infrastructure. All this, he says, prevents "a large chunk" of Android drivers and platform code from merging into the main kernel tree.

Google, he ultimately argues, has forked its mobile OS.

Google did not immediately respond to our request for comment. But in a pair of posts to LWN.net, Mountain View open source guru Chris DiBona says that Android isn't in the main tree because the main tree doesn't want it.

"I think if the Android kernel were important enough to the mainline, then this wouldn't be a problem. The reality is that the mainline doesn't want the code, so a fork is a normal response to this," DiBona writes.

"This whole thing stinks of people not liking Forking. Forking is important and not a bad thing at all. From my perspective, forking is why the Linux kernel is as good as it is."

From where Kroah-Hartman is sitting, Google has built a platform that's incompatible with the Linux kernel. "Any drivers written for Android hardware platforms can not get merged into the main kernel tree because they have dependencies on code that only lives in Google's kernel tree, causing it to fail to build in the kernel.org tree," he writes.

"[Google is] effectively creating a kernel branch that a number of different vendors are now relying on."

And, he continues, this fork is "much worse" than the typical fork. "Because Google doesn't have their code merged into the mainline, these companies creating drivers and platform code are locked out from ever contributing it back to the kernel community," he says.

"The kernel community has for years been telling these companies to get their code merged, so that they can take advantage of the security fixes, and handle the rapid API churn automatically. And these companies have listened, as is shown by the larger number of companies contributing to the kernel every release.

"But now they are stuck. Companies with Android-specific platform and drivers can not contribute upstream, which causes these companies a much larger maintenance and development cycle."

According to Kroah-Hartman, Google "shows no sign of working to get their code upstream anymore," and he says that the company's cooperation is essential. "A number of [necessary] changes will affect the kernel/userspace boundry, so some changes to the Android userspace logic would also need to be changed if these kernel changes are made, preventing anyone except a Google employee from making the changes," he says.

DiBona bears this out. But he believes the fork is nothing but a good thing. "If you don't like how we architected android, don't complain that the code isn't being mainlined," he says. "You can't have your cake and eat it too. We get it: you don't like how we put together the kernel for android. We're okay with that. Other companies coming to you for help is fine, too, you can choose who you help. Others might see that as an opportunity, but whatever."

It is not possible to install a personal voice mailbox.

Is it possible (just like WM devices) directly from the main menu via "t9" people to call?
Example: unlock the device, 526 key and get suggestions at that time as the names: January, janine, Janus, Lamberts, etc.
It is not possible to contact the virtual keypad to get suggestions on writing a combination. It is supported in the phone book functionality

- What I wonder when this unit is whether the virtual keyboard in landscape mode is running in Full Screen, or in landscape mode just a simple overlay on the screen (same as in portrait mode)?
We're not sure we fully understand the question. In the landscape is a full screen keyboard but it is an overlay. Perhaps you should clarify this question a little further.

Has / will the X10 also noise-canceling technology, like the Nexus, which has (or better, of course)?
We have that question submitted to our international product manager and wait for an answer.

Description

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

[0001]This application claims the priority benefit of Taiwan application serial No. 97128866, filed on Jul. 30, 2008. The entirety of the above-mentioned patent application is hereby incorporated by reference herein and made a part of this specification.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002]1. Field of the Invention

[0003]The present application generally relates to an electronic device and a method for using the same, in particular, to an electronic device that is convenient for users to operate and a method for using the same.

[0004]2. Description of Related Art

[0005]With the development of the technology, people are becoming more and more dependent on electronic devices. In order to meet current requirements on the electronic devices in terms of high computing performance and light, thin, short, and small designs, various portable electronic devices, such as ultra mobile personal computer (UMPC), tablet PC, pocket PC, personal digital assistant (PDA), cell phone, and notebook PC, are developed.

[0006]FIG. 1 is a schematic view of a conventional cell phone. The cell phone is a clam shell type cell phone, so as to achieve easy operation and a light, thin, short, and small design. The cell phone 100 includes a first body 110, a second body 120, and a hinge 130. The first body 110 is rotatably connected to the second body 120 through the hinge 130, such that the cell phone 100 can be unfolded and folded. In order to maintain the cell phone 100 in an unfolded (or folded) state, the hinge 130 has a crown design (not shown) to fix the first body 110 and the second body 120 at positions corresponding to the unfolded (or folded) state.

[0007]However, when operating the cell phone, a user has to apply an additional force in order to unfold or fold the cell phone 100 due to the hinge design, which is a burden to the user.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0008]Accordingly, the present application is directed to an electronic device, which is easy to unfold and fold.

[0009]The present application is also directed to a method for using an electronic device, which is quite convenient.

[0010]An electronic device including a first body, a torsion hinge, and a second body is provided. The first body has a first magnetic component. The torsion hinge is slidably disposed on the first body. The second body is connected to the torsion hinge and has a second magnetic component. The second magnetic component magnetically attracts the first magnetic component when the torsion hinge is located at a first position, and enables the second body to be stacked on the first body, so as to make the first body and the second body in a folded state. The second magnetic component separates from the first magnetic component, and the torsion hinge drives the second body to rotate relative to the first body when the torsion hinge leaves the first position, so as to enable the first body and the second body to be in an unfolded state.

[0011]A method for using the electronic device as described above is provided. The method includes: forcing the torsion hinge to leave the first position and drive the second body to rotate relative to the first body, when the electronic device is to be unfolded; and applying a force on the second body to enable the second body to rotate and attach to the first body, and enable the second magnetic component to magnetically attract the first magnetic component, when the electronic device is to be folded.

[0012]The present application provides an electronic device which is convenient for users to unfold and fold and a method for using the same. When the electronic device is to be unfolded, a force is applied to make the torsion hinge move so as to separate the magnetic components of the upper and lower bodies from each other, the bodies are enabled to rotate and thus unfolded by a torque of the torsion hinge. When the electronic device is to be folded, a force is applied to make the upper body rotate and attach to the lower body, and the electronic device is then folded by the magnetic attraction between the magnetic components of the upper and lower bodies. In other words, such an electronic device enables users to conveniently unfold and fold the upper and lower bodies.

[0013]In order to the make the aforementioned and other objectives, features, and advantages of the present invention comprehensible, embodiments accompanied with figures are described in detail below.

World's first with 84Mbps

New world record of 84Mbps HSPA technology
*
To be showcased at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona February 15-18
*
Operator 3 Scandinavia first to choose 84Mbps HSPA

The rapid growth of data traffic in mobile networks continues, driven by the use of smartphones, laptops and other devices. Wireless access to data services and internet is today a "must".

One of the attractions Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) is showcasing at the upcoming Mobile World Congress is the world's first demonstration of 84Mbps HSPA technology. At the same event last year Ericsson showed the world's first 42Mbps HSPA demo that is currently commercially available and being rolled-out by operators across the world. Ericsson was also the first to demonstrate 56Mbps at the CTIA in Las Vegas in 2009.

Marie Westrin, head of radio development in Ericsson, says; "We have a passion for innovation and that is why we can achieve these industry milestones, year after year. Our driving force is to fulfil consumers' need to social networking, online gaming and video conferencing, just to mention a few services, on the move."

On January 20, operator 3 in Scandinavia announced that it has chosen Ericsson for the rollout of its 84Mbps HSPA network. The rollout covers all of Denmark and four major cities in Sweden. First phase of the rollout starts first quarter 2010. Commercial deployments of HSPA with 84Mbps can be expected the first half of 2011.

The demonstration will be shown at Ericsson's exhibition area at Hall 6, La Fira, Barcelona during the GSMA Mobile World Congress, February 15-18. Access is by invitation only. Media need to contact Ericsson Corporate Public & Media Relations.

Speeds mentioned are peak network downlink speeds. Actual customer download speeds are less and can vary due to congestion, distance from the base station, local conditions, hardware, software and other factors.

Xperia X10 will be upgradeable

Hi all,

Sorry for the long absence.

Some reflections after meeting media, analyst and bloggers around the world over the last couple of months.

I have been confronted with the same questions and discussions that you have been interested in from the very beginning. The underlying OS release version that we will use when launching Xperia X10 -why 1.6 and will it be competetive enough? These concerns are quite on top of mind among industry experts as well as advanced users as yourself, which I do appreciate. I will share my experience from enganging in these discussions giving it a context. It is a bit lengthy, so bare with me. :)

The OS versions are somewhat becoming a reference point for people I feel. Similar to processor speed in computers and megapixels in camera phones. I as consumer of course evaluate the same things, buying equipment on my own. However when you start evaluating usage, there are more factors to consider than just the specs.

When I do a product demo, the response about hardware is unquestionable in my view. The design, screen size, ”feel” and overall specs leaves an impression right away. “Beautiful and delight to hold in the hand”, “Sleek and outstanding” are some frequent quotes.

On the other hand when moving over to talk about the user interface, I have felt some skepticism in the air since people tend to have adopted quickly to Android release version as their context of competiveness. Quite often, the starting point for this part of the demonstration is a 1.6 release remark if I would generalize my interactions to date.

Interestingly enough the focus on OS version changes over course of a minute or so. Demonstrating the generic Android capabilities with our graphical enhancements is a starting point. The home screen, the immediate responsiveness of the big capacitive screen, the true multitasking that Android allows, the easy and rich access to Google services like maps and android market. All that is there and for me that is the base functionality, which I really appreciate and use on a day to day basis.

Then I introduce the signature applications; Sony Ericsson TimescapeTM and Mediascape and the focus of the discussion shifts from talking about this layer on top of Android, that I refer to as the Sony Ericsson User Experience platform. I now find myself discussing the total experience rather the OS version in isolation with a great appreciation about what we are bringing to the table. Then the interest of the User Experience platform future roadmap gets to be the talking point instead. What I hope to get across to you all, is that there will be a software update for Xperia X10 that will upgrade the complete Sony Ericsson User Experience Platform based on newer version of the Android OS.

I have probably painted a positive picture, but I am sharing the discussions I have had and my take outs from them. I am not trying to hide from the fact that there are platform upgrades between android 1.6 and 2.1, if utilized can enhance the experience for developers and users. Having that said, I have had discussions with carriers that are very sensitive and concerned generally about taking on devices in their range that are not competetive enough. I have faced head to head comparisons between Xperia X10 and generic 2.1 Android devices (as well as other OS) and carriers have concluded that we still stand strong in comparison. This because of the layer that we ad on top of the generic OS.

I am both confident and humble at the same time as we can´t anticipate and cover everything when planning ahead. There will be areas that we can´t over bridge between these releases, but on the total experience I am very confident about this product as the feedback received has been extremely positive. Then there will be an update as well, which I hope settles some of the concernes expressed.

I will not be able to fully understand a developers take on this discussion (and we do have a dedicated community for that), but I would be very interested to hear you feedback. Reading the posts, it ranges from time to market, concerns about whether the product is “future proof” etc, but what are your biggest concerns when it comes to usage? What benefits from the 2.1 release are you most interested in? That would be really interesting for me to get some more input on….

Have a great weekend

Sumit

ARM Holdings plc Reports Results For The Fourth Quarter and Full Year Ended 31 December 2009

CAMBRIDGE, UK—ARM Holdings plc announces its unaudited financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended 31 December 2009, reflecting resilient trading performance and further progress in delivering ARM’s strategy.

Progress against strategy in Q4

* Growth in mobile applications
o ARM opportunity increases as smartphone growth continues and first ARM® technology-based mobile computers introduced
o 6 processor licenses signed for mobile phone and computing applications
o ARM achieves an average of 2.4 chips per phone as capability of mobile phones increases
* Growth beyond mobile
o ARM increases share in target markets such as consumer electronics and embedded products
o Strong sequential growth with microcontrollers up 60% and smartcards up 100%
o 19 processor licenses signed for a broad range of applications including automotive, microcontrollers, printers and smartcards
* Growth in new technology outsourcing
o Leading semiconductor companies continue to license ARM’s physical IP and multimedia IP including:
+ GLOBALFOUNDRIES licensed ARM’s advanced 28nm physical IP
+ Samsung licensed ARM’s Mali graphics processor for use in next generation consumer products

Warren East, Chief Executive Officer, said:
"We are pleased that in Q4 ARM has continued to outperform the semiconductor industry as we gain market share. Throughout 2009 we demonstrated the resilience of the ARM business model in a challenging trading environment. Despite industry dollar revenues being down about 20% in the relevant period, ARM market share gains resulted in dollar revenues being down 10% with on-going financial discipline maintaining normalised operating margins over 30% and delivering strong cash generation.

The company is well-placed for this strong performance to continue as leading semiconductor manufacturers are increasingly designing ARM technology into their products, and as ARM technology becomes ever more pervasive in markets with long-term structural growth such as smartphones, digital TVs and microcontrollers. Recently, Infineon and STMicroelectronics have announced the intention to use, for the first time, ARM processors in their smartcard and digital TV/set-top-box product lines respectively."

Outlook
It is generally anticipated that the semiconductor industry will see improving conditions in 2010 compared to 2009. The rate of improvement is still unclear as it will be influenced by consumer confidence and the broader macro-economic environment. Reflecting these generally anticipated improvements in the semiconductor industry, and given ARM’s strong industry position coming into 2010, we expect group dollar revenues for the full-year to be at least in line with current market expectations.

This week in search 2/5/10

In addition to language improvements this week, we released several other new features:

Haitian Creole translation
We've now added Haitian Creole (kreyòl ayisyen) translation to Google Translate, so that you can translate between Creole and 51 other languages, and also hear spoken versions of Creole translations. While this translation system is still evolving (when translating to/from Creole, English performs better than other languages), we hope it will help relief volunteers communicate better with Haitian earthquake victims, and serve as a useful resource for people in Haiti and elsewhere. To learn more about ways you can help with Haiti relief efforts, please visit our Crisis Response page.

Example translations: [Kijan ou ye ?] and [How can I help you?]

Improvement for Arabic searches
Sometimes when people conduct a search, they forget to separate words with spaces or mistakenly repeat a letter within a word. These types of errors are much more common in languages like Arabic, where some letters are considered word breaks. In other words, if the last letter of one word is a word break, the following word may not be separated with a space. To address issues like this, we recently developed a search ranking improvement that targets certain Arabic queries. Our algorithm employs rules of Arabic spelling and grammar and signals from historical search data to indicate when to leave out spaces between words or when to remove unnecessarily repeated letters. Now, when you type a query leaving out spaces or repeating a letter, you'll see better results based not only on what you typed, but also on what our algorithm understands is the "correct" query.

Example search: [التربيةوالتعلييم] Incorrectly typed, this Arabic query may not produce a relevant search result. With our algorithm change, the query returns better results for the correct meaning: "Ministry of Education."

Doodle 4 Google
This week marks our third annual Doodle 4 Google contest in the U.S. The competition gives K-12 kids the opportunity to design their own Google logo and the winner appears on Google.com for a day so that hundreds of millions of searchers can enjoy it as well. In addition to the bragging rights, there are a number of great prizes including a college scholarship and computer's for the winner's school. If you or your child are interested in getting involved, check out our announcement or visit the Doodle 4 Google contest page for entry rules.

Stars in Google News
A couple of months back, we launched the Custom Sections Directory feature in Google News, enabling you to setup and share sections on topics of interest. Now there's an even easier way to keep up to date with particular news stories. Mark a story cluster by clicking on the star next to it — just like you do with messages in Gmail and items in Google Reader. Once you've starred a story in Google News, when there are significant updates, we'll alert you by putting the headline in boldface. You can also follow your most recent starred stories in the Starred section of Google News. Learn more about this, and get starring!

Google Apps highlights – 2/5/2010

Developments over the last couple weeks really showcase how Google's other innovation focus areas — including Search, Mobile and Chrome — help make Google Apps even more useful.

Updates to Google Search in Gmail Labs
On Tuesday we made some helpful changes to the Google Search feature in Gmail Labs. The search gadget now runs some of Google's most popular search features, like dictionary definitions, spelling suggestions, calculations, local results, weather info and news. You don't even need to type your search query anymore; just highlight text in the compose area and click the multicolored "g" button to run a search on those terms.

Gmail Chrome extensions
Several convenient extensions for Gmail are now available to Chrome users. The "Google Mail" extension adds a small button next to Chrome's address bar that displays your unread mail count. "Send from Gmail" makes Gmail your default mail program, and opens a Gmail compose window when you click an email link on a web page. The button for this extension helps you quickly share the web page you're viewing over email.

Easier file location in Google Docs
Last week we introduced a pair of improvements to make finding files in Google Docs easier. First, we launched an option to show file thumbnails in your Documents List, which is great for quickly spotting what you're looking for. Just click the view option buttons in the toolbar to toggle between thumbnails and the standard text layout.

Also released last week: search spelling suggestions help you find the file you're looking for, even when your typing is off. The Google Docs search spell checker is powered by the same technology that helps you get better search results on google.com.

Scripts for Google Apps Standard Edition
At the end of last week we launched application scripting for Google Apps Standard Edition. (Before it was only available to businesses and schools using Premier and Education Editions.) Scripts can be triggered from spreadsheets to perform automated tasks and calculations, but scripts go far beyond spreadsheets; they can be used to fire off automated email messages, create appointments in Google Calendar and accomplish other actions across the whole Google Apps suite. We've written up a few script tutorials if you have the itch to give scripting a try.

Mobile device management
Just yesterday, Google Apps Premier and Education Edition customers got a boost in their ability to manage mobile devices synced with Google Apps. Right from the online control panel, IT admins can remotely wipe data from lost or stolen mobile phones, configure devices to lock after a period of inactivity and set password strength requirements. These new capabilities are available for iPhones, Windows Mobile devices and Nokia E-series phones. Stay tuned for similar features for Android devices.

Who's gone Google?
It's been another very active couple weeks helping more businesses and schools move to the cloud. The team is happy to welcome the latest crop of Google Apps customers, including Complinet, The Open University, Villanova University, Small World Financial Services, Tuskegee University, Clemson University and the New Zealand Post.

Saline Area Schools in Michigan has an especially impressive "gone Google" story. They're saving $400,000 in the first year, spending much less time on server administration, keeping spam at bay and fostering better collaboration among faculty.

Fairchild Semiconductor also recounted their experience switching 6,000 employees spread across 20 countries off their legacy Lotus Notes installation, selecting Google Apps and Postini over hosted email alternatives from Microsoft and IBM. Barry Driscoll, Senior Director of IT for Fairchild summed it up best: "Now we are providing our employees with a lot more functionality for a lot less money."

Hope you're enjoying the latest round of new capabilities, whether you're using Google Apps with friends and family, with work colleagues, or with classmates. For details and the latest news in this area, check out the Google Apps Blog.
