Ericsson's ultra wide input range Power Module simplifies power radio applications

Designed for systems powered by 24V or 48V batteries, Ericsson Power Modules' PKM5000D is a quarter-brick, isolated DC/DC converter that is optimized to deliver the highest efficiency across an ultra wide input voltage range of 18V to 75V. It is suitable for a very large range of applications in ICT, offering systems' designers the opportunity to use the same DC/DC converter for use in 24V and 48V systems, also to power remote-feeding applications that utilise 20V to 60V line voltages with an operational margin to ensure that remote systems will always operate whatever the source voltage status is.

ICT equipment is mostly powered by 48V, but it is common in radio-applications to use 24V batteries instead. As a result, systems’ designers often have to design two versions of the same board, embedding a dedicated 48V or 24V DC/DC converter, when an ultra-wide input range module could accommodate both voltages in one single unit.

The series' ultra-wide input range of 4:1 is primarily for use in radio-base stations equipment but not limited to. The PKM5000D is a very flexible product that is very suitable to power industrial applications using remote peripheral equipments powered through long-wires, very similar to remote feeding traditionally used in radio-base stations. Because of its performance and features, the PKM5000D is also suitable for applications such as transportation, test-equipment, process-control and others.

The designer's task is greatly simplified when designing multi-bus voltage boards that could be used in different applications powered by 24V and/or 48V batteries, thus simplifying inventory management and reducing cost. The first variant released in the series is a 12V tightly regulated converter with an output current of 10A. More variants will soon be offered as the series rolls out.

Because it is based on a standard quarter-brick footprint, when designers are upgrading existing 48V or 24V boards to match 'single code boards' to cover both system voltages, without redesign the PKM5000D can replace 2:1 input DC/DC converters, accommodating both voltages in one 'single code module'.

At 120W, the PKM5000D offer a massive 20 percent more power than current similar products available on the market that deliver just 100W. Further, with a half-load efficiency figure of 91.8 percent at 27V input voltage and 89 percent at 53V input voltage, the converter is very well positioned in the marketplace for ultra-wide input range products.

By the simple process of using external resistors, the converter's output voltage can be adjusted in the range of 10.8V to 13.2V, and the standard product is delivered with a remote-control that complies with negative logic, with positive logic available as an option.

Protection levels include over temperature (OTP), over current limit (OCP) and over voltage (OVP). For safety the PKM5000D has a galvanic input to output isolation of 1500V and according to Telcordia SR332, issue 1, black box technique, it offers an excellent MTBF figure of 1.47 million hours. It is compliant with the RoHS directive 2002/95/EC.

Technology-wise, Ericsson's PKM5000D is based on a multi-layer PCB integrated transformer technology, and its power train and secondary synchronous-rectifiers have been optimized to accommodate switching parameters to meet the very specific constraints inherent to an ultra-wide input range.

PKM5000D is the result of combined disciplines developed at Ericsson Power Modules but equally, it is an illustration of the company's R&D flexibility in combining its resources in Sweden and China. The converter has been fully designed, verified, and qualified to comply with Ericsson's design for manufacturing principles, which includes design optimisation to reduce energy consumption in manufacturing, transportation and to make the product easy to recycle when reaching end-of-life.

The forum is meant to bring the best examples of how the telecommunications industry is embracing Telco 2.0 – an amalgamation of research and brainstorming designed to foster change in the telecoms and media technology industries – and sharing global best practices and strategies in key areas.

"Even though the number of subscribers is increasing and they are using more data, operators don’t maximize their return on investment," says Fredrik Almqvist, strategic and tactical marketing manager at Ericsson's Business Unit Multimedia. "The Telco 2.0 event will try to answer what they can do in order to get into new value chains and increase top stream revenues.

"For the industry to earn more, it has to expand into other verticals, talk across the industry and use operators' networks. It's really important to drive new revenue streams because the ones that are there today are not going to increase. For example, an internet gaming provider could create a partnership with an operator that allows customers on that operator's network to enjoy a better gaming experience, including the highest possible bandwidth and no latency problems."

The free event will open up a dialog; representatives from Ericsson and other major telecoms players will be online and answering questions from anyone, including operators, journalists, internet players and end users. It will also be a forum to stimulate innovation for operators in order for them to leverage their investments in mobile networks.

Several key Ericsson figures will contribute at the event. Besides Vestberg, these include Staffan Ljung, Director Payment and Analytics, who will talk about mobile money; Nick Wiggin, head of Advertising Strategy & Partnerships, who will speak about mobile advertising, and Magnus Ewerbring, head of Mobile Broadband at Ericsson who will speak about mobile broadband.

Ericsson's own Virtual Multimedia Experience will be presented in an online exhibition area with films and relevant information about what we are doing in this space. Visitors can get updated about Ericsson solutions that address the business and our drive to make our vision of 50 billion connected devices by 2020 a reality.

Applications and connectivity crucial to young developers

Some of the world’s most promising student developers believe that mobile applications and a more connected society are the key factors if the ICT industry is to have a successful future.
We caught up with the students at the Ericsson Application Awards, part of the Nordic Mobile Developers’ Summit in Stockholm.
Robert Mullins, a researcher from the Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland, says applications are already a part of everyday life. "Applications are definitely where the focus is right now," he says. “"fact that there are millions of downloads happening every day proves that people love applications, use applications and want applications."
Mullins and his college teammates – Mark Williamson and Kieran Ryan – won the top prize for their Caller Profiler application for Android. It combines social networking with IP telephony by displaying information from Facebook and other social networking sites on a phone when a call is received.
The winners believe that mobile broadband and 4G technology will drive the applications industry.
"It will be absolutely core," Mullins says. "At the moment, I think mobile applications are where PC applications were about 20 years ago – running in isolated mode, such as when we had Windows 3.0 running on a PC. In the future mobile applications will be connected into the network and with each other and will use network based information to behave intelligently."
The team from Tor Vergata University in Rome finished in second place. Team member Daniele Albanese agrees about the importance of mobile applications to an increasingly connected world.
"Mobile development will revolutionize society, so connectivity is the most important thing for the future," he says. "Without connections, applications would not have any use."
The Rome team developed the Childroid, an application that can be used by parents to locate their children, or vice-versa, in urgent situations.
"We wanted to do something that was not just innovative but that would also be useful for society," Albanese says.
More than 120 student teams from all around the world registered for the competition.
"A competition like this is extremely useful to students," Mullins says. "It was our first time doing Android applications, so we have definitely learned new skills."

ERICSSON ENABLES HYA CABLE TO OFFER ADVANCED TV SERVICES

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) has provided Hsin Yeong An (HYA) Cable, the Taiwanese cable operator, with a fully redundant head-end solution that enables it to offer subscribers a richer, more advanced service. The Ericsson solution will enable HYA Cable to provide consumers with increased channel choice and high definition (HD) programming.

HYA Cable is encoding HD and SD channels in MPEG-4 AVC, taking advantage of the high bitrate efficiencies provided by this next-generation compression technology. The resultant bandwidth savings enable HYA Cable to roll out more advanced services for its subscribers. The company uses an IP head-end configuration, which makes it easier to connect devices onsite and reduces the cost of cabling and video transport.

ERICSSON CHOSEN FOR DISHTV UPGRADE

•7 million Indian subscribers to get new SD and HD channels
•Seamless upgrade on legacy SD MPEG-2 set-top boxes
•Increased efficiency in satellite bandwidth usage
Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) is enabling DishTv, India’s largest direct-to-home (DTH) satellite operator, to improve its satellite bandwidth efficiency, increase channel capacity and offer more choice to its subscribers in HD and SD. The head-end upgrade enables DishTv’s 7 million subscribers to enjoy new HD services. Viewers can also access new SD channels without the need to swap existing MPEG-2 set-top boxes (STBs).
DishTv has selected Ericsson’s high performance EN8100 MPEG-2 and EN8190 MPEG-4 AVC encoders, and is launching a combined SD MPEG-2 and HD MPEG-4 AVC system in the same transponder space. The EN8100 and EN8190 optimize bitrates and deliver greater performance to strengthen DishTv’s business case by maximizing current bandwidth capacity.
"We evaluated all the options available to us and the advantages of the Ericsson system over other solutions were clear," said Rajiv Khattar, President Projects, DishTv. World’s first cloud-based mobile TV at Eurovision Song Contest

Ericsson, in cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), launched the world’s first cloud based MobileTV solution during the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest.

Cloud-based computing optimized for mobile phones has now been applied to MobileTV. All the computing and calculations needed to create a good user experience now take place in the cloud using the web browser on the phone, instead of requiring consumers to download applications to their phones. The results of this live experiment show that the potential for cloud-based mobile computing is present, and that there is a growth market for media organisations and telecom operators in which no capital expenditure is needed.
"Previously, you would have to download an application to the phone in order to have a good user-experience. What we have shown now is that viewing mobile TV and video on demand can be done in an easy and user-friendly way, by just using the browser of the phone," says Kurt Sillén, Head of Customer Business Development at Ericsson Business Unit Multimedia. "Using this technology is now possible since bandwidth of mobile networks allows for quicker transmission of information, which means we can do necessary calculations in the cloud rather than in the phone," Sillén says.
This new MobileTV experience was launched as an experiment during the Semi-finals and Final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo in late May by the European Broadcasting Union.
"An important mission for us is to expand the reach for our viewers on to digital channels," says Nicoletta Iacobacci, Head of ITV & Crossmedia at the European Broadcasting Union. "We know that for our digital viewers, one of the most important reasons to use this technology is the user experience. This experiment shows that this can be provided by 3G mobile phones much more easily than before. We had a total of 25,000 visitors to our mobile site from 11 countries, which we consider a great success," says Iacobacci. "Promotion was only done through the event's website www.eurovision.tv, and Facebook."
This year, the Eurovision Song Contest took place in Oslo, Norway, and was coproduced by the EBU and NRK.
"It was really interesting to follow the viral spread of the mobile portal," says Andreas Munkelien, CTO of Digital Media at NRK. "Users on blogs and twitter were impressed with the interactive nature of the broadcast. The results were above expectations. Many tweets and blogs online said the user experience was really good. Users could not believe that the technology behind, for example, sweeping, took place using the browser instead of a downloaded application," Munkelien says.

Caller profiler app wins top Ericsson award

•Top prize at the Ericsson Application Awards won by team from Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland
•Global student competition generated over 700 registered users and 120 registered teams from 28 countries
The Ericsson Application Awards, designed to inspire innovation and encourage mobile application development, have awarded the top prize to a team from Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland for their CallerProfiler application.
CallerProfiler demonstrates how web based facilities such as social networking sites, and mapping can be combined with network based information such as Cell ID and caller identifier to deliver increased user value and experience.
Robert Mullins, project leader for the winning team, explains: "CallerProfiler uses information available on social networking sites such as LinkedIn and Facebook enabling phone users to immediately see the context of the caller, and understand who they are. When a new caller makes contact, the application will offer an automatic link to their information and opens up the opportunity to broaden social networks."
The Waterford team of Robert Mullins, Kieran Ryan and Mark Williamson won the top prize of EUR 20,000 beating finalists from Italy, who developed an application for parents to locate children, and a team from China who designed a travel planning app.
Mullins added: "We developed the application prototype for the Android handset but it can be easily adapted to run on other platforms such as iPhone, Symbian and Windows mobile. We believe that one of its key commercial and technological strengths is that it has the potential to become a generic application used on any mobile device".
Congratulating the team on winning the competition, John Hennessy, Managing Director, Ericsson Ireland, said "Continued collaboration between industry and academia, as showcased at Ericsson's Application Awards, is an important step towards enabling a smart economy – something we are keen to continue to build on in Ireland. We were delighted to see the students from WIT being recognized for their innovative "CallerProfiler" application, well done."
The jury panel was made up of industry figures including the head of Ericsson Research, the editor in chief of Magazine Mobil, a Professor of Human Computer Interaction and the former technical architect and CTO of Spotify.

Mobile broadband big news for photojournalists

Thousands of journalists and photojournalists will descend on Stockholm, Sweden, this week for one of the city’s biggest occasions of recent years – the royal wedding of Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria to Daniel Westling. Amid the splendor of the historical city setting, they will be able to send articles and images instantly to newsrooms and agencies across the world – thanks to mobile broadband.
Meeting deadlines is probably more associated with journalism than any other profession. For printed publications, a great story or photograph is useless if it arrives even seconds after the deadline. Being able to publish at any time means that online publications don’t have the same deadline restrictions, but editors still want material out before their competitors. The key to being first is being the quickest. Speed is crucial.
Not long ago, the car was the photojournalist’s fastest method for getting a roll of film back to the office. But in the digital age, mobile broadband allows photojournalists to send high-quality images to their headquarters within seconds of capturing that special shot. Broadband is more than a benefit – it is an essential enabler in their daily work.
Pontus Lundahl works for Scanpix Sweden, one of the Nordic region’s leading photo agencies and the official photo agency for the royal wedding. The photographs he will take in Stockholm this week could be used in publications anywhere in the world.
"This is a big occasion for us," he says. "Like all big stories, breaking news, or important sports events, a good connection and speed is crucial."
"When I get shots that I’m happy with I can load them onto my laptop and send them back to the office very quickly. Some locations – for example, sports stadiums – often have Wi-Fi connectivity hotspots especially for journalists."
"But connectivity is usually good, no matter where I go in Stockholm. I can send images back really quickly from almost anywhere."
Technology advances mean that Lundahl can even send photographs directly from his camera to the agency’s base, without the need to upload them to his laptop.
The reliability of mobile broadband will be more important to Scanpix Sweden than ever during the royal wedding weekend whether pictures are being sent via 3G or Telia’s 4G commercial network, which the agency will use for the first time.
"For a breaking news story, I can send images almost instantly as soon as I get to the location," he says. "That is all made possible by mobile broadband. It is like the still photography equivalent of live television."
"For example, a colleague who was covering the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games sent photographs directly from his camera to our agency offices in Stockholm. Scanpix received the images almost as the events were happening."
For a picture agency such as Scanpix, there is an obvious direct relationship between mobile broadband and being able to offer high-quality pictures to photographic editors on newspapers or other publications before other agencies. In simple terms, mobile broadband helps boost business.
"All of the international journalists and photojournalists who will be in Stockholm this week already know about the importance of good connectivity and speed," Lundahl says. "If they are not surprised by the connectivity on the streets of the city, I believe they will at least be happy with it. That is down to mobile broadband. It could also be a real test for the city as the large number of visiting journalists and tourists could place more demand than ever on the broadband and mobile broadband networks."
Stockholm’s connectivity, and the drive to make it accessible by all its citizens, was recognized by the Intelligent Community Forum; the city was named the Intelligent Community of the Year 2009, becoming the 10th winner of the global award.

Core infrastructure wins for innovation

Ericsson won the Global Telecoms Business (GTB) award for core network innovation.

Ericsson and Indonesian operator, XL, won the core network innovation award for commercial implementation of the functionality in Ericsson's LTE ready Evo Core.
XL's Evo Core includes the world's largest MSC pool serving five million subscribers. Benefits include securing continued service for end-users in the unlikely event of node or even site failure. It also includes the Ericsson Blade System, supporting multiple network functions on a common blade type, which makes it easy to increase network capacity and add new core network functions.
The GTB Innovation Awards are designed to honor projects involving telecom operators and service providers around the world, in association with their vendors and suppliers.

Ericsson wins LTE innovation award

Ericsson won the Global Telecoms Business (GTB) award for wireless network infrastructure innovation.

Ericsson and TeliaSonera won the award for the wireless network infrastructure innovation for the world’s first commercial LTE network.
The jury's motivation was: "The first commercial implementation of LTE is without doubt the outstanding project of the year".
The world's first 4G/LTE network went live in Stockholm, Sweden, on 14 December 2009. The launch was a result of a close collaboration between TeliaSonera and Ericsson to bring customers the flexibility to watch videos, download documents, and enjoy the benefits of fast broadband while on the move.
The GTB Innovation Awards are designed to honor projects involving telecom operators and service providers around the world, in association with their vendors and suppliers.

Wireless Packet Core Market Expected to Grow in 2010 Despite First Quarter Volatility, According to Dell'Oro Group

Huawei Takes Top Spot as Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Experience Large Sequential Drops.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, announced that the wireless packet core market contracted 30 percent sequentially during the first quarter this year due to seasonal factors, an extraordinarily strong previous quarter, and order and revenue volatility. Despite this very large drop in the first quarter, however, the market is forecast to grow in the remainder of 2010.

"First quarter results were only a bump-in-the-road for the wireless packet core market this year," said Greg Collins, Vice President at Dell'Oro Group. "Data usage and smartphone penetration continue to increase and will drive the need for more signaling and bandwidth capacity. Because of these strong demand drivers and despite lower than expected first quarter results, our forecast for 2010 remains essentially unchanged at $2.1 billion, or almost 10 percent growth versus 2009," he added.

The report indicates that Huawei surpassed both Ericsson and Nokia Siemens in the first quarter to capture the top spot in the market with more than 25 percent revenue share. Given a very strong fourth quarter in 2009 in North America for GGSN and SGSN equipment, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens both saw very large sequential declines in the first quarter this year due to order volatility. With the anticipated growth in wireless data and signaling needs, it is likely that both of these vendors will rebound in the coming quarters.

Users around the world want their mobile broadband connections as just as private as their phones. They also want to personalize their phones with applications that give them easy access to social media channels.

Qtel Group customers across the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia will in the future be able to enjoy the latest multimedia services thanks to a new platform solution provided by Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC).

Ericsson measurements show that mobile data traffic has surpassed voice. Jan Wäreby, Head of Multimedia at Ericsson, says one reason is that people are connecting more to social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, and increasingly do so on the go using their phones. "Indonesia for example, is the world's second fastest growing country in terms of Facebook users. Worldwide, more than 100 million active users are now accessing Facebook using their mobile devices," Wäreby says.

To offer innovative services to its customers, such as social networking and mobile music, the Qtel Group is choosing Ericsson's Service Delivery Platform. The Ericsson platform will allow the Qtel Group to handle an increasing number of multimedia applications more efficiently. They will be able to introduce new customer offerings quickly and easily, opening up new revenue streams. Ericsson's Service Delivery Platform also allows the Qtel Group to reduce operating expenses and increase profitability.

Effective June 7, 2010, the new Head of Corporate Public & Media Relations for Ericsson will be Ola Rembe.

Rembe has 15 years experience in communications and has been with Ericsson corporate communications since 2001. Rembe headed the strategic planning and execution of all communications activities related to Ericsson's winning Volvo Ocean Race campaign 2008-09.

Rembe replaces Åse Lindskog who became Head of Investor and Analyst Relations on May 17, 2010.

Microwave Transmission Market Slows in First Quarter of 2010, According to Dell'Oro Group

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- According to a newly published report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, the point-to-point microwave equipment market declined 3 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2010.

"Microwave market revenues declined in the first quarter partly due to heightened competition among vendors that resulted in steep price declines that overrode the 14 percent growth in radio unit shipments," said Jimmy Yu, Sr. Director of Microwave Transmission research at Dell'Oro Group. "In addition, demand in EMEA, especially Europe, was low as a result of the persistent economic distress affecting certain European countries. Microwave revenues declined 13 percent year-over-year in EMEA. North America was a bright spot for the market, growing 50 percent year-over-year as a result of the large WiMAX deployment by Clearwire in the U.S.," Yu added.

The report also indicates that the newest market segment, Packet Microwave, grew 15 percent in the first quarter over the fourth quarter last year.

ST-Ericsson focuses on entry-level smartphone segment for emerging markets

ST-Ericsson, the world's third-largest handset chipset maker, is working with China Mobile and handset vendors on entry-level smartphones and TD-SCDMA, according to company senior vice president Thierry Tingaud.

Though smartphone sales reached 55 million units globally in the first quarter of 2010, most consumers in emerging markets still cannot afford such devices, Tingaud said. The Swiss company introduced the entry-level U6715 platform, which should allow more smartphones priced below 100 euros to enter the market by year's end, he noted.

Market observers pointed out that China-based carrier China Mobile and Acer are developing low-end smartphones based on the U6715 platform, and Foxconn will be the devices' manufacturer. The alliance of ST-Ericsson, China Mobile and Acer could post a major threat to MediaTek, a major provider of entry-level handset ICs.

Foxconn has also received orders for smartphones based on the ST-Ericsson platform from several international carriers, according to industry sources.

ST-Ericsson is the top chipset maker for TD-SCDMA handsets, with 10 million units in cumulative shipments and more than 100 products since developed, Tingaud said. Its customers include Nokia, Samsung Electronics, HTC and China-based Tianyu, the maker of the K-Touch handsets he added.

For the next-generation LTE standard, ST-Ericsson is cooperating with China Mobile as well, Tingaud revealed. The company has unveiled three LTE platforms thus far, and a dual-mode chipset supporting TDD (time division duplexing) and FDD (frequency division duplexing) is scheduled for 2011.

Ericsson ConsumerLab report reveals consumer trends driving world's largest market

· Nearly 800 million mobile subscribers, 380 million internet users

· Status, urbanization and globalization driving take-up of more advanced services

With the 2010 World Expo, Shanghai is shining a spotlight on China's past, present and future. A new Ericsson ConsumerLab report is turning that spotlight onto the consumer behavior powering the growth, potential and diversity of the world's biggest telecom market.

The report, released in conjunction with the Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) Business Innovation Forum in Shanghai from May 17-19, explores the behaviors, trends and circumstances of China's nearly 800 million mobile phone subscribers and 380 million internet users. They cover every possible socioeconomic niche and every level of technical prowess.

With mobile penetration of 56 percent and 8.8 million new subscriptions a month, China has one of the most dynamic markets in the world, as well as the fastest-growing major economy. GDP growth of 8 percent in 2009 and rising incomes are increasing spending power and material wealth. But the picture varies across this enormous country. The urban, rural and youth markets in particular show extreme diversity in user sophistication and demand for services.

Douglas Gilstrap, Senior Vice President and head of Strategy at Ericsson, stresses the importance of China on the telecom world: "With its enormous and increasingly prosperous population, China - together with neighboring India - is widely expected to provide a large share of future telecom growth. The study provides the latest, in-depth information that we and our business partners need to use to capture that growth. Understanding user behavior is crucial in driving successful innovation in both technology and business models."

Urban: There is a flood of people to China's cities, where users demand and get the latest in advanced mobile internet services. There is huge interest in the latest technology, and rapid income growth - 8.8 percent year-on-year in 2009 - as well as the hunt for status has made China the second-largest luxury consumer in the world. Mobile phones are everywhere, while fixed connections are less common, so people use their mobile handsets for data and voice rather than laptops and dongles.

City dwellers increasingly see internet access as an essential service. They rely on the internet for access to services and social contacts. Curiosity about the world beyond China's borders is also driving change: the number of Chinese tourists heading overseas is set to reach 54 million this year, up from 47 million last year.

Youth: More educated than their parents, the youth of China are one of the most sought-after target markets in the world. With service consumption rivaling or exceeding their peers in the UK, Sweden and the US, they are early adopters, digital natives, status conscious and - as a generation of single children - more affluent than previous generations.

Rural: Despite a rush to the cities and increasing numbers of migrant workers, a huge proportion of China's population lives in rural areas. Rural incomes are rising and there is soaring demand for technology products, but subscribers use their mobile phones almost exclusively for voice. Relevance of service, ease of use and pricing are the key factors for driving rural market uptake of mobile internet.

Ericsson ConsumerLab studies how consumers act and what they think about telecom products and services, helping operators understand their customers and develop revenue-generating strategies.

It is based on a global research program built on yearly interviews with 40,000 consumers in more than 30 countries, representing the opinions of more than 1.1 billion people. The global research program is built on both quantitative and qualitative consumer market research covering both general market and consumer trends as well as in-depth insights into specific areas.

The two-day global media event, Ericsson Business Innovation Forum, was opened by a guest speech by China's prominent economist Dr. Fan Gang who analyzed future scenarios of the Chinese economy.

Mr. Zhu Lijun of China Unicom and Mr. Bill Huang of China Mobile joined the event and delivered visions of exciting market update. Other speakers included representatives from Chinese online companies, Lenovo, and executives from ST-Ericsson as well as Ericsson.

Are there benefits of connecting buses to a network? That's a question that the city government of Curitiba in Brazil posed before deciding to make it the first city in the world to implement a brand new public transportation solution developed by Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Dataprom, the Brazilian supplier of public-transport solutions.

The solution, which is already in use in Curitiba, connects public buses to 3G mobile broadband networks, and is equipped with Ericsson mobile broadband modules for high speed access. By supplying the Electronic Ticketing and Fleet Management Systems, Dataprom and Ericsson will enable controllers to access a wide range of information about their fleet and monitor the route, stop time, speed, distance travelled, date of departure and arrival.

The largest city in southern Brazil, Curitiba has a unique public bus service which has raised much interest and received worldwide recognition. The new solution opens up possibilities for new traveler services that can help people plan their route and enable them to purchase tickets wherever and whenever it is most convenient.
