Nirvana Phone - the phone as an alternative to a laptop

Citrix and Open Kernel Labs together to collaborate on a project smartphone Nirvana Phone. This device is expected to become not just a mobile phone, and be able to fully replace the laptop business class. The idea is that in order to make life easier for those who constantly have to carry a laptop, you need to create a phone that in addition to standard communication functions will be necessary to connect computer peripheral connectors. In this case, on arrival at the user only need to connect a monitor, keyboard, etc.

According to Citrix, about 70% of users have no need for a laptop on the road, so such a Nirvana Phone system would be very helpful to them. As the minimum needed to replace the PC requirements Citrix and Open Kernel Labs called Bluetooth 2.0 + with full support for HID, USB 2.0 + Host controller modules WiFi and 3G, and video output HDMI or VGA, and also, at least 528 MHz ARM processor with 256 MB ROM and 192 MB of RAM memory. If we compare these requirements with actual models of platform-based Qualcomm Snapdragon, NVIDIA Tegra or Texas Instruments OMAP4, it becomes clear that the visualization at the level of your home or business station - is quite real.

Samsung trebles third-quarter profits

Samsung Electronics, Asia’s biggest maker of microchips, flat-screen televisions and mobile phones, on Friday reported record quarterly earnings, highlighting the technology industry’s rapid recovery from its worst downturn in decades.

The South Korean company forecast that earnings may decline in the current quarter due to the stronger won and rising marketing expenses. But it expected earnings to improve next year as the global economic recovery drives demand growth.

The company plans to increase its capital expenditure in 2010 to ride on the industry’s recovery. It plans to spend more than Won5,500bn ($4.65bn) on memory chips and about Won3,000bn on liquid crystal displays. Its capital spending this year is estimated to reach more than Won7,000bn, including Won4,000bn on semiconductors and Won2,000bn on LCDs.

Net profit tripled to Won3,723bn in the July-September period from Won1,219bn a year ago on higher chip prices and strong sales of flat-panel TVs and mobile phones. Sales rose 29 per cent to Won24,862bn.

The company’s main businesses were all highly profitable, with its operating profit margin of semiconductors and LCDs reaching 15 per cent and that of its telecommunications division standing at 10 per cent.

The semiconductor business is expected to continue its resurgence on rising demand and limited supplies. Kwon Oh-hyun, Samsung’s head of semiconductor business, said earlier this week that small shortages are expected for both D-Ram and Nand flash memory chips next year.

Samsung is expected to benefit most from the recovery thanks to its widening technology gap with rivals in Japan and Taiwan. The company aims to increase its semiconductor revenue by more than 50 per cent in three years from the estimated $16.6bn this year to $25.5bn in 2012.

The company’s LCD business reported operating profit of Won1,010bn as the industry faced supply shortages. Samsung’s flat-panel TV sales increased 24 per cent from a year ago, driven by strong demand from China and the increasing popularity of its premium LED-backlit TVs.

Samsung sold 60.2m units of mobile phones in the third quarter on strong demand for its touch-screen phones in advanced markets. The company estimated its global market share increased to 20.8 per cent from 19.2 per cent in the second quarter. Samsung plans to strengthen the fast-growing smart phone business, which has been cited as its relative weakness, by launching various models including phones that run on Google’s Android operating system.

Samsung’s shares were up 1.81 per cent at Won731,000 in morning trade after hitting a record high last month.

Samsung Profits On Mobile Phones, Chips

Earnings were the highest quarterly profit in the company's history. Its chip business took the lead, and handset profits also rose.

Samsung posted a profit of about $3.14 billion for the third quarter, thanks to gains in its chip business, and the success of its mobile phone division.

The earnings were the highest quarterly profit in the company's history, and more than triple the earnings for the same period last year. The company's individual businesses all posted gains in operating profits, and its chip business was the most profitable with a 17.6% profit margin. Overall, Samsung posted revenues of $20.9 billion.

The company remains the second-largest handset maker in the world, trailing Nokia, and it shipped a company record 60.2 million phones, a 16% increase from the same period last year. Samsung's average selling price did dip to about $120 per unit, but its profit margin rose to 7.7%.

"This was the first time a vendor other than Nokia has shipped more than one-fifth of the world's handsets since Motorola's Razr-heyday performance of 2006," wrote research firm Strategy Analytics. "The key to Samsung's growth has been an attractive portfolio of touch phones and an expanding retail presence across multiple regions."

Samsung has about 20.8% of the cell phone market, and it plans to focus on smartphones and entry-level devices over the next few quarters. The company's entry-level phones could sell well in emerging markets such as China and India, and high-end handsets as the Android-powered could help boost the division's profit margins.

The company's television unit also saw an increase in shipments and profit margins. Samsung said its TV shipments rose 24% from the same quarter last year, and it had a 16.9% profit margin. The company's liquid crystal display division also reported a 15.3% profit margin, up from 7.9% last year.

Motorola gets Nexus Two

Manufacturer confirms its 2010 portfolio to include a 'direct-to-consumer device with Google'.

Motorola is working on what could be Google’s Nexus Two smartphone.

In an earnings call last week Samsung co-CEO and handset chief Sanjay Jha said the 20-strong line-up of a Samsung’s range of new smartphones this year would include "one direct-to-consumer device with Google".

The move will boost the troubled manufacturer’s fortunes. Motorola is looking to recover from poor performance in the final quarter of 2009 in the face of concerted competition from Nokia and Apple.

Motorola did, however, perform slightly better than analysts had predicted, with share prices looking stronger in late-2009 than they had during the same period in the previous year.

Motorola believes that in the first half of 2010 it will make a loss, although analysts are more upbeat and expect to see a return to profitability.

Jha commented: "We are just at the beginning stage of our transition to a smartphone company."

Dubbed Nexus Two the smartphone is expected to be distributed in a similar manner to Nexus One, made by HTC, which is sold via the Google online phone store, either unlocked or with a network contract and subsidy.

Flight 3407 co-pilot sent 2 texts prior to takeoff

'Sterile cockpit' issue raised in crash probe.

The co-pilot of the plane that crashed in Clarence Center last February used her cell phone in the cockpit to send two text messages prior to takeoff, possibly in violation of federal "sterile cockpit" rules that bar pilots from focusing on anything but the flight to which they are assigned.

Rebecca L. Shaw, the flight's first officer, sent those text messages after boarding the airplane in Newark, N.J., for the flight to Buffalo.

One was made at 7:58 p.m., apparently before the airplane began its ground taxi.

The second was at 9:13 p.m., five minutes before the plane took off.

A National Transportation Safety Board investigator reported the text messages in a document filed in preparation for the board's Tuesday meeting to consider its final report in the crash of Continental Connection Flight 3407, which claimed 50 lives.

While the first officer's use of a cell phone before takeoff appears unrelated to the crash about an hour later, the revelation could serve as more evidence that the crew of Flight 3407 ignored federal rules aimed at preventing pilots from getting distracted during critical periods of the flight.

Federal rules regarding a sterile cockpit bar pilots from extraneous conversation and activities when the plane is taxiing and during the critical periods during and after takeoff and before landing. But the federal documents showing that the text messages were sent do not indicate clearly whether they were violations of a sterile cockpit.

"It is definitely inappropriate during the taxi period" for a pilot to be texting, said Mike Loftus, a former Continental pilot who lost his daughter, Maddie, in the crash. "Anything that is going to distract you from the job at hand is not a smart thing to do."

The sending of a text message while a plane was taxiing "would be in direct violation of applicable Federal Aviation Administration regulations, as well as company policy and training," said Joe F. Williams, spokesman for Pinnacle Airlines, which owns Colgan Air, the Continental subcontractor that operated Flight 3407.

"Colgan has zero tolerance for sterile cockpit violations," Williams added. "Our training programs reinforce compliance with standard operating procedures, of which sterile cockpit is a key element."

Colgan does not believe that it is common for its crews to use cell phones during the operation of a flight, Williams said.

A transcript of the cockpit voice recorder shows that Shaw and the plane's pilot, Capt. Marvin D. Renslow, talked about previous jobs, family issues and company policies while the airplane's brakes were set, when personal conversation is allowed.

But they continued talking while the airplane was in motion, inching along the taxiway toward departure.

"Does it show a little lapse of standard operating procedure? Yes. But is it egregious? I wouldn't characterize it that way," said John Cox, a former pilot who now heads Safety Operating Systems, a Washington aviation consultancy.

Cox said he anticipates that the safety board meeting will include consideration of why the pilots felt free to violate rules restricting extraneous cockpit conversation.

"I would expect that the board would look at cultural as well as individual violations of sterile cockpit — that they will look into the culture at Colgan, as well as the actions of the two individuals," he said.

Policies on crew use of cell phones vary by airline. Some require that pilots turn off their phones prior to beginning the first flight checklist, while others apply the same rule to both passengers and pilots: When the aircraft door is shut, phones get turned off.

In addition to violating sterile cockpit rules before takeoff, the crew chatted about personal matters after the plane descended to less than 10,000 feet as it approached Buffalo Niagara International Airport, breaking the federal rules again.

Those sterile cockpit violations are expected to be a matter of concern to safety board members at the meeting Tuesday, where it also will vote on safety recommendations stemming from the crash.

Only two weeks ago, the safety board implicated the distracting effect of cell phones when it determined that text-messaging by a commuter train engineer diverted his attention and led to the collision of two trains in Chatsworth, Calif., in September 2008. Twenty-five people were killed in that accident.

In one of her first acts as chairman of the safety board, Deborah A.P. Hersman ordered all board employees not to use cell phones for calls or text messages while driving. "Recent NTSB investigations have identified personal wireless technology use on the job," Hersman said. "This phenomenon is becoming more widespread and these phone calls, texts and other distractions have deadly consequences and must be addressed with all due haste by the transportation industry."

Apple has also launched an ebook store – the iBookstore – in a bid to take on Amazon and Sony by allowing ebook downloads to the device.

iPhone users 'migrate' to Vodafone

Operator claims it has won over 'significant numbers' of iPhone users.

Vodafone claims ‘significant numbers' of Apple iPhone users are defecting to its network in search of better network coverage.

Speaking to Mobile Terry O’Brien, Vodafone’s retail director, said: ‘A significant number of iPhone users have migrated to Vodafone since we launched the iPhone.’ He added: ‘It is quite astounding how many of these new customers have moved to us because of poor network experience.’

O’Brien declined to identify the networks that iPhone users are abandoning in favour of Vodafone.

Industry observers point to O2 as the likely contender as it is the only UK network that has iPhone customers coming to the end of their original iPhone contracts.

O2 forged a two year exclusivity deal with Apple for the iPhone in 2007 which came to an end last November. Since then Apple has cut a non-exclusive deal with O2 and forged deals with Orange, Vodafone and Tesco to supply the iPhone in the UK.

O’Brien said Vodafone had invested heavily in its network in advance of its deal with Apple. He commented: ‘There is no good trying to sell the iPhone without the right network to support it. We are getting a lot of anecdotal feedback from stores and from sites like Twitter that shows we have the advantage on other networks.’

O2 strongly refuted any suggestion it is losing iPhone customers to rival networks. A spokeswoman said: ‘This is absolutely not the case. We have seen no increase in churn since the end of our exclusive agreement with Apple. In fact, we continue to have the lowest level of churn in the industry.

‘With regard to network coverage, we are just about to release independently verified results of tests carried out by SiRoDa (and validated by BABT) which show that we offer the best network experience in many UK cities, including London. This is supported by other independent tests.’

Sony Ericsson X10 smartphone launches 1 March

Manufacturer's online store confirms launch date of flagship handset.

Sony Ericsson will launch its flagship Xperia X10 smartphone on March 1, according to the manufacturer's online store staff.

Online sales staff told Mobile the smartphone will be available from Sony Ericsson's online shop on March 1.

A Sony Ericsson online salesman said the online store will stock the X10 exclusively for the first week of March before it is goes on sale through other channels.

Mobile understands Vodafone has cut a deal with Sony Ericsson to stock the handset.

However a Sony Ericsson spokesman insisted: 'No date has been confirmed yet. All we have said is it will be launched in Quarter One.'

Sony Ericsson is pinning its hopes on the X10, after a series of disastrous handset launches last year which saw the Satio, Aino and the X2 blighted with software problems.

Vodafone’s vote of confidence in the X10 is significant, since the operator aborted its launch of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X2 in December after it suffered software problems.

The X10 is powered by the new Android operating system with 1 gigabyte of internal memory and a superfast 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The touch screen provides quick access to social media services and contacts via a graphical user interface.

It is the first Android phone to feature an 8 megapixel camera, fitted with smile detection, touch focus and Send to Web.

The X10 also features a variety of social media applications such as Mediascape and Timescale, allowing users to manage all of your communications in one place, browse conversations, check out tweets on Twitter or photos, emails and texts.

Microsoft Phone with Tegra will

We have confirmed by an anonymous source that NVIDIA will be in the MWC to file jointly with Microsoft's new Zune Phone company based in the Tegra platform. This confirms that the new phone was developed in the image of the Zune HD which we were able to prove in the lab so it will be a phone with outstanding multimedia capabilities as the ability to play high-definition video of 720 points.

Yesterday we echoed the thoughts of the istartedsomething blog about some information that appeared on a Zune device USB driver that seemed to confirm the existence of the Zune Phone from Microsoft. Today we can confirm that the phone will be presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and that the device will be based on NVIDIA's Tegra platform, which will accompany Microsoft in the coming-out.

Tegra has already been used by Microsoft to manufacture its Zune media player HD, a device that we had the opportunity to test in the laboratory showed MuyComputer and thanks to NVIDIA's architecture, a truly outstanding multimedia capabilities such as playing high-definition video and the ability to run 3D games.

That is based on NVIDIA's platform allows us to deduce some of its specifications, such as WiFi connectivity, HDMI video output auxiliary screen 480 x 272 points and a weight around 70 grams. We could not confirm whether the device is equipped with the new Windows Mobile 7, but all indications are that it will.

The possibility that this afternoon the iPhone OS 4.0 by Apple makes the "counter programming" by Microsoft with its Windows Mobile 7 or Seven is made more likely by the day. Of course if Microsoft's new phone incorporates the best of HD Zune to Apple's iPhone has turned out a competitor really hard.

Sony Ericsson Yari review: Move to play

Gsmarena have posted their review of the Sony Ericsson Yari. Here are the phone's key features, main disadvantages and their final impression.

Key features:
* Quad-band GSM support
* Tri-band 3G with HSDPA support
* 2.4” 256K-color display (240 x 320 pixels)
* 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash
* VGA video recording at 30fps
* Gesture-based gaming
* Accelerometer for automatic UI rotation and motion-based gaming, gaming keys
* Built-in GPS receiver
* FM radio with RDS and TrackID
* Bluetooth with A2DP and USB (Fast Port connector)
* Great audio quality
* Stereo speakers
* Support for microSD cards up to 16GB, hot-swap, 1GB card in the box
* WisePilot navigation available
* Stand and microSD card reader in the box

Main disadvantages:
* Signal reception issues
* Uncomfortable soft keys and keypad
* Camera produces bland, low-contrast photos
* No standard USB and audio ports
* Preinstalled gesture-based games not very impressive
* Slow image gallery
* No office document viewer preinstalled
* WisePilot software is a 30-day trial, downloads map data over the air
* Gaming keys are only used in the Camera, not for actual gaming

We were very excited about the Sony Ericsson Yari when we started the review. The camera-tracked gesture control combined with accelerometer action is a move in the right direction for gaming – just look at the sales of the Nintendo Wii compared to PlayStation 3 for example (and the Wii just uses an accelerometer-enabled controller, it can’t do the camera gesture trick).

But the more advanced of the two preinstalled games – Tennis – has the equivalent to two buttons for control – one to press and release to serve and another to press when the game prompts you to hit the ball. While using the camera instead of physical buttons is impressive, the game itself is simpler than Guitar Hero – and you don’t get Rock Band style multiplayer fun either.

And the camera was quite a surprise – an unpleasant surprise. From the makers of impressive Cybershot cameraphones, not tweaking the camera contrast is a major blunder. The weak signal reception and poor keypad mean that the Yari doesn’t do so well as a phone either. And what’s with the gaming keys that almost have no function at all?

But there were some high points – the Sony Ericsson Yari could easily live up to the Walkman series name, though it isn’t officially part of that range. And SatNav navigation for feature phones is hard to come by, even if you’re willing to pay for it. The push email support is a great feature, though we would have liked a preinstalled IM client too.

The Sony Ericsson Yari is not a very expensive phone so maybe we shouldn’t be too hard on it – after all, it offers a great package for the price. But let’s see what it’s up against.

The Nokia 6260 slide is an equal to the Yari in price and specs though it does have Wi-Fi, to get ahead of the Yari. It’s an older device and hardly a looker, nor does it have the gesture and accelerometer controlled games.

If it’s looks that you’re after, then the Nokia 6700 classic is a great option. It’s a bit more expensive than the Yari, but its solid metal body and top-of-the-line 5MP camera should make up for that difference. And because it’s not a slider, it’s much thinner than the Yari.

The Samsung S7350 Ultra s is similar in specs, but can be found quite cheaply – 140 euro is not uncommon and we even managed to find it for as low as 100 euro (140 dollars). If you stumbled upon such a bargain, would you pass it up?

Have a look at the Samsung S8300 UltraTOUCH too – for a premium you get an AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 8MP camera and DivX/XviD support.

The Sony Ericsson Yari will certainly find its supporters – despite its drawbacks it sure is a looker, especially the Metal Rose and Cranberry White variants, and the gesture-based games may be a bit of a gimmick but they’re still quite impressive the first time you see them. Reasonably priced and reasonably skilled is what it takes do well in the midrange. But the Yari sure stands out for its willingness to experiment.

Merriman Curhan Ford Initiates Coverage on the Communications/Wireless Technology Sector

SAN FRANCISCO -- Merriman Curhan Ford (Nasdaq: MERR) nnounced that it has initiated coverage on the Communications: Wireless Technology sector under equity research analyst Scott Searle, CFA.

Searle's research thesis includes company coverage of Alvarion Ltd. (ALVR), Aviat Networks, Inc. (AVNW), Brightpoint Inc. (CELL), Cogo Group, Inc. (COGO), RF Micro Devices, Inc. (RFMD), Smith Micro Software, Inc. (SMSI) and TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc. (TQNT) with Buy ratings and Palm, Inc. (PALM), Ceragon Networks, Ltd. (CRNT), DragonWave Inc. (DRWI) and PowerWave Technologies Inc. (PWAV) with Neutral ratings.

Searle highlighted these themes in his company initiation reports:

* Alvarion Ltd. (NASDAQ:ALVR $4.06; Buy)

Historically overhyped and often confused as a 4G competitor to LTE, WiMAX is a real and commercially ready broadband wireless solution that supports speeds of up to 40Mbps (going to 300Mbps). Despite the global credit freeze and ensuing recession, WiMAX has over 500 deployments in 147 countries. Alvarion is the leading independent supplier (with 20% market share) of this largely rationalizing multibillion dollar market opportunity. Although near-term visibility remains cloudy, we believe this is currently reflected in the stock. With $2.00 per share in net cash and EPS potential of $0.30-0.40 in CY11 we believe investors will revisit the shares driven by 1) a thawing of credit markets, 2) successful licensing in key markets (i.e. India), 3) U.S. broadband stimulus funds and 4) the emergence of new verticals. We are initiating coverage at Buy and see upside to $7-8, or 18x 2011 EPS plus net cash per share.

* Aviat Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVNW $7.19; Buy)

Although Aviat Networks has underperformed market indexes and its direct backhaul comps, the company remains extremely well positioned to benefit from exploding growth in mobile data traffic. Simply stated, the transition to 3G/4G and the adoption of smart phones is choking networks. Mobile backhaul is an immediate and sustained beneficiary of this trend. Customer specific issues have largely subsided and we believe customer activity is increasing. In our opinion, we believe the company has the right products, product roadmap, scale and complete end to end solution to achieve success. We believe that despite the cloudy visibility that the underperformance of shares will soon reverse and see upside to the $10-12 level as the valuation gap narrows with its competitors.

* Brightpoint Inc. (NASDAQ:CELL $5.84; Buy)

Brightpoint is the leading supplier of distribution and logistics services to handsets and other wireless devices with global and North American market share at approximately 7% and over 30%, respectively. Thus Brightpoint is a broad based means to participate in the recovery of global handset sales in 2010 (10% vs. 7-8% decline in 2009). More importantly, Brightpoint is an OEM agnostic way to participate in the Smart Phone market which is expected to grow over 30% in 2010 and beyond. In addition to higher ASPs, the market migration to smart phones provides the opportunity for more value added and higher margined logistics services. Importantly, while the company has been steadily improving gross margins since mid 2007 it has paid down over $350M in debt. The recent earnings bump has created a buying opportunity. We see upside to $8-10, or 12-15 times CY11 EPS estimates.

* Ceragon Networks, Ltd. (NASDAQ:CRNT $11.79; Neutral)

Ceragon Networks is a leading independent supplier of high capacity microwave radio solutions for mobile backhaul applications. The company offers a combination of IP and TDM based products which offer a flexible network architecture to its customers. The company has faired fairly well in the current economic climate with top line results off less than 25% from 2008 peak levels. This is impressive given its relative high exposure to markets such as India. Long-term, the growth outlook appears healthy driven by incremental network capacity demands from mobile data and next generation (3G and 4G) networks. However, limited near-term visibility combined with the over 70% stock price appreciation since the mid-summer dampens our enthusiasm. We would wait for a better entry point or an acceleration in end markets and are initiating coverage at Neutral.

* Cogo Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:COGO $6.36; Buy)

Cogo Group, Inc. is often over simplified as a China handset and 3G play. While trends in these markets will certainly impact sentiment, COGO is much more diverse with over 60% of its revenue coming from non-wireless markets. One of the notable non-wireless segments is Industrial (AMR, smart grid, railway, auto, etc) which comprises 14% of revenue, up from near 0% in 2007. Going forward we see growth in Industrial (aided by the $600B stimulus plan), SME, new products (mobile TV, sensors, etc.), export opportunities in wireless devices and potentially new IC partners. With a favorable gross margin mix, operating leverage, $2.84 per share in net cash, and a cash adjusted P/E of less than 6 times 2010 EPS, shares of COGO remain attractive with an upside of $10-12.

* DragonWave Inc. (NASDAQ:DRWI $11.19; Neutral)

DragonWave, Inc is a leading supplier of Ethernet based radios to IP networks. The company has done a phenomenal job of correctly anticipating and servicing the trend of IP backhaul in next generation networks, particularly WiMAX. DragonWave has posted over 200% growth on the back of marquee customer Clearwire's nationwide buildout. However, the company's success has become its intermediate-term risk as Clearwire is an 82% customer. While the company actively pursues customer diversification, we believe large U.S. operators will take time to make backhaul decisions. Furthermore it remains unclear to us how existing mobile operators will approach backhaul for its LTE rollouts, all IP or hybrid TDM/IP. We would look to become more constructive on the stock with better visibility to customer diversification or a pullback in valuation.

* Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM $10.39; Neutral)

Palm has pioneered the mobile device and the smart phone. Its latest iteration with the Pre and Pixi, based on its robust and critically lauded WebOS, has truly revitalized the company. While the opportunity exists to replicate the iPhone's market success and profitability, pitfalls remain. Yes, the smart phone market is exploding with projected 30% growth for the next several years, and yes, non-traditional suppliers (Apple, Palm, RIM, etc.) are garnering bigger chunks of market share. However, incremental distribution (more carriers) and, importantly, more applications (more than 1,600 at present) will be required to achieve success. We estimate breakeven at approximately 1.4M units and EPS power of $1.00 at approximately 3M units per quarter (vs. a recent 800k). We expect a rapidly expanding operator base, but remain on the sidelines until visibility to carrier adoption improves.

* PowerWave Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV $1.37; Neutral)

PowerWave Technologies is well positioned to benefit from the capacity additions required by next generation wireless networks, i.e. 3G, LTE and WiMAX. As a fully functional mobile data ecosystem (networks, devices and applications) continues to drive dramatic increases in network traffic (up over 100% per year) operators will be required to invest in incremental network capacity. Regardless if it is on existing or next generation networks, PowerWave stands to benefit. However, visibility remains limited given seasonality and the infrastructure struggles of two key OEMs, Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent (roughly 1/3 of revenue). Longer-term, we believe new products (remote radio heads), new verticals (government) and a modest market recovery can drive EPS approaching $0.20. We await better visibility and are initiating coverage with a Neutral rating.

* RF Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:RFMD $3.85; Buy)

RF Micro Devices has historically fought the perception that the mobile device market will slow, competition and integration will increase, and gross margins will remain under pressure, in perpetuity. The reality is the traditional device market has slowed, but new opportunities for connectivity (PC Cards, M2M, WiMAX, WLAN, etc) are increasing. More importantly, device complexity is driving incremental dollar content per phone ($3-4 vs. $1-2). Additionally, integration of the RF front end is unlikely to happen, however, complexity within the front end itself (i.e. support of multiple bands) is likely enabling RF Micro Devices to distance itself from the competition. With further upside in gross and operating margins, an improving balance sheet, strong free cash flow, and a modest multiple of approximately 8x FY11 EPS, we believe the shares have upside to the $7-8 range.

* Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:SMSI $7.75; Buy)

Smith Micro is a leading supplier of software solutions that manage adaptive mobile connectivity and personal digital content for enterprise, consumer and operator customers. Its flagship, Quicklink Mobile, manages and optimizes connectivity of mobile devices such as notebooks, netbooks and other emerging form factors onto wireless networks. Consequently, the company is extremely well positioned for the huge ramp of mobile devices that is projected to drive 40% CAGR in the wireless PC modem market. Smith Micro services seven of the top 10 north American carriers and two of the top three PC OEMs. With limited competition (Smith Micro acquired its closest competitor), attractive financials and a reasonable valuation (less than 10 times 2011 EPS), Smith Micro is an attractive play on the growth in mobile devices. We see upside to the $13-16 level and initiate coverage with a Buy rating.

* TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc. (NASDAQ:TQNT $6.00; Buy)

TriQuint, a leading supplier of high performance RF semiconductors, is well positioned to take advantage of the trends in units and increasing dollar content presented by 3G/4G and the proliferation of smart phones and other mobile devices. More so than any other RF IC vendor, we believe TriQuint is leveraged to the high growth (30%) smart phone market (approximately 35% of revenue) with key customers Apple (primary supplier) and RIM (where TriQuint is gaining share). Additionally, a recovery in the networking group will aid results with growth in cable, new power devices, optical and microwave backhaul. With expanding margins, a clean balance sheet and smart phone momentum, shares remain attractive trading at 10x CY10. We are initiating coverage at Buy with a price target of $9-10.

Twitter Users Take a Bite Out of Apple iPad

Attensity Analyzes Sentiment Expressed in 55,000 Tweets Over Four Days.

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Attensity™ Group, the leader in business user applications that generate value from unstructured data, has released its analysis of public reaction in Twitter to the hotly anticipated launch of the Apple iPad™.

Using Attensity Analyze for VOC (http://www.attensity.com/en/Applications-and-Services/Applications/Voice-of-the-Customer/Voice-of-the-Customer-Index.html), part of Attensity's semantic analysis application suite, a total of 55,000 discussion-oriented messages, or "tweets," were pulled from Twitter and then analyzed. Twenty thousand tweets were pulled in the two hours prior to the January 27 event; another 20,000 two hours post-announcement; and an additional 15,000 four days later.

Before the announcement, at least 50 percent of tweets expressed positive sentiment towards the iPad. That number jumped to 71 percent in the two hours following the announcement, with extremely negative sentiment disappearing to a statistically negligible one percent.

Four days later, positive sentiment still weighed supreme, at 69 percent -- good news for Apple. The five issues most commonly discussed in those positive tweets were the iPad's applications, screen quality and keyboard; its comparison to the iPhone; and its potential as an Amazon Kindle™ "killer."

For those people who disliked or even hated the iPad, the reasons most often expressed are related to its lack of support for Adobe® Flash technology; lack of a camera; inability for the user to replace the battery himself; or that the person already has an iPhone or Kindle and thus views the iPad as redundant.

The analysis is described in more detail, with multiple pie charts, on Attensity's web site:

Tekzilla, the tech review, help and interview show hosted by Patrick Norton & Veronica Belmont saw steady continued growth, while Brian Brushwood's highly entertaining Scam School, which delivers a weekly dose of street tricks and bar pranks saw steady growth driven in part by both live performances at SXSW and other venues. Both shows surpassed the 1 million monthly views threshold and joined Diggnation as three of the top video programs available on the Internet. In 2010, the Internet breakthrough hit Diggnation, hosted by Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht, will celebrate five years of covering the top stories on Digg.com each week.

"I'm extremely proud of the performance of all our shows including the existing line up as well as the new titles we launched this year. It's clear our audience is embracing the new while staying dedicated to the shows they've always loved," said Ryan Vance, Vice President of Programming & Production, "In addition, it's exciting to see our new viewers are coming to Revision3 every day and finding a deep well of content to get passionate about."
