AUO 2.4" Transparent Multi-touch Screen Focused on GPS Tweet

Display Taiwan had a few gems in it and this 2.4 inch transparent AMOLED multi-touch screen was one of them! The screen is targetted at GPS and before you say, why would I need a transparent GPS screen, think about having something like this on your windshield. Might need longer arms but the idea is still cool. The display could have had brighter colours but we were told that the screen would not have been as transparent.

For functionality of the touch screen when looking at the pictures up and down actions are supported but in the drawing application anything goes. This 2.4 inch display is a prototype as they are also working on 4" and 7" displays. Putting something like this into your windshield interesting but the multi-touch capabilities seem a bit wasted. This was the only suggestion offered to us for use of such a screen. What do you guys think? What would you use a 2.4" transparent multi-touch AMOLED screen for?

HTC EVOTM 4G Breaks Sales Records for Sprint on Launch Day; America’s First 4G Phone is a Hit with Customers Tweet

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –Friday, June 4, was an early morning for thousands of customers who lined up several hours before Sprint (NYSE: S) stores opened their doors in anticipation of the first day of sales for America’s first 3G/4G phone, HTC EVOTM 4G. Customers were anxious to get their hands on HTC EVO 4G providing record sales figures for Sprint stores around the country.

Friday sales of HTC EVO 4G marked the largest quantity of a single phone sold in one day ever for Sprint – the record was previously held by both Samsung InstinctTM and Palm PreTM. In addition, the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

The record pace of HTC EVO 4G sales led to temporary shortages of the device at some of the 22,000 sales locations across the United States, including Sprint retail stores, national retail partners including RadioShack, Best Buy and Walmart, and indirect dealers. Sprint and HTC are diligently working around the clock to increase inventory in all sales channels. Additional shipments are arriving in retail stores on a regular basis with many stores seeing daily deliveries.

Samsung seeks to challenge Apple’s iPad Tweet

Samsung Electronics looks to challenge Apple in the nascent tablet PC market with an aggressive marketing plan.

An industry source told The Korea Herald that the company plans to launch the tentatively named sPad in August and sell hundreds of thousands of units at competitive prices.

The plan is aimed at taking a lead in the domestic market before Apple’s hugely popular iPad arrives in Korea as early as the third quarter of the year.

Samsung will roll out the devices via SK Telecom, the nation’s top mobile carrier, said the source.

The sPad will run on Google’s Android operating system and initially feature a 7-inch touchscreen, the high-ranking industry official said on condition of anonymity because of the confidentiality of the matter. Samsung will add an 8-icnh model in October and a 10-inch model in December, he added.

“Samsung and SK Telecom plan to launch an aggressive sales drive for the sPad,” he said.

Samsung declined to comment on the release date and other details of the sPad.

KT, the No. 2 mobile operator, which exclusively sells the iPhone in Korea, reportedly plans to launch the iPad in Korea by the end of this year.

Samsung is striving to catch up with Apple in the smartphone market, even on its home turf, and to prevent a repeat in the tablet category. Apple’s iPhone sales have surpassed 700,000 units just six months of its introduction in Korea.

Many analysts doubt, however, whether Samsung will be able to lure customers away from the iPad given a dearth of content, which is key in the larger-screen device.

Google’s Android Market lags far behind Apple’s App Store in terms of the number and variety of applications available, especially ones for entertainment/ebook devices. Apple said on Monday that there are over 5,000 applications for the iPad, which will also run almost all of the more than 200,000 applications from the App Store, including apps already purchased for iPhones or iPod Touches.

“I expect the iPad to have the upper hand in content. In terms of hardware, the screen size of the sPad is somewhat small,” Choi Nam-kon, an analyst at Tong Yang Investment Bank, said. The iPad features a 9.7 inch touch screen.

“The iPad is a proven model. Given that the sPad is not yet proven, it is not even a matter for discussion which one is better,” he said.

The iPad is surging in popularity, with its international sales surpassing 2 million units in less than 60 days of its launch, Apple’s announced Monday.

A number of PC and handset makers including LG Electronics, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Nokia are expected to jump into the tablet PC market with devices mostly powered by the Android operating system.

The global media tablet market is expected to jump six-fold by 2014, according to recent data from IDC. The market research firm forecast on May 20 that worldwide media tablet shipments will grow from 7.6 million units in 2010 to more than 46 million units in 2014.

“These are early days for media tablets, an altogether new device category that takes its place between smartphones and portable PCs. IDC expects consumer demand for media tablets to be strongly driven by the number and variety of compatible third-party apps for content and services,” noted Susan Kevorkian, program director, Digital Marketplace: Mobile Media & Entertainment.

Big in Japan (ShopSavvy) Feeling the EVO 4G Effect Tweet

Qik is not the only company feeling the effects of the EVO 4G and its massive sales figures. ShopSavvy developers Big in Japan are reporting similar workloads and finding that some of their retailers are "not fairing as well under the load." That's a great thing for them as it means the app has been downloaded in droves. Overall scans traffic is up 50% since the launch of the EVO 4G. In fact, Big in Japan is seeing a record number of downloads thanks to Sprint's latest handset.

Sprint Offers Tips on Maximizing Battery Life on HTC EVO 4G Tweet

If you've taken the plunge and bought the HTC EVO 4G recently, Sprint offers these tips to maximize your battery life and have a pleasant experience with the world's first 4G Android smartphone.

1. Add widgets to your HTC Sense homescreen to control the radios (Bluetooth, WiFi, 4G)

2. Use the widgets to turn off select radios when not in use. If you're not using 4G, switch it off and fall back on 3G instead to gain better battery life.

3. Turn off network roaming. By default, roaming is turned on for the HTC EVO 4G out of the box, which means that the phone scans for the strongest CDMA/EV-DO signal. If you've got great Sprint coverage where you are and don't need to roam onto one of Sprint's partner carriers, turn off roaming so the phone doesn't need to constantly search for the best signal.

4. Turn on automatic brightness so the screen can adjust in light and dark environments rather than having brightness turned all the way up. Alternatively, you can also set the screen brightness lower by default.

5. Turn off live wallpapers--they're pretty, but they do use a little bit of extra processing power.

6. Carry an extra battery or plug into a car charger when you can.

Application Visibility Issues Tweet

Recently we became aware that some Android applications were not visible on the Android Market. While we were internally troubleshooting and qualifying the fix and communicating with our hardware partners, developers were trying hard to get our help through various technical support sites. Regrettably, we fell short of our own standard for customer support by not communicating the issue to our developers and how we were working to resolve it.

We’re pleased to say that the issue looks to be resolved with a patch, and to our best knowledge, all apps that were previously impacted are up and visible again. Again, apologies for the delay and inconvenience this created.

Nexus One 720p Demo Tweet

One of the advantages of iPhone 4 over most Android-based competitors is 720p video recording. Now an older but still very popular Android smartphone, Google's Nexus One, gets that feature — albeit by means of a hack.

Although not officially supported, this "feature" makes sense given that Nexus One's camera is one of the most advanced cameras we've seen on a smartphone.

You must run Cyanogen's CM5.0.8test3 software, which unfortunately means that Android 2.2 (Froyo) is not supported. The full procedure to enable 720p video recording on your Nexus One is detailed at http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/06/...

Future updates to the hack should include Froyo support, as well as better video and audio quality.

X10 Mini and X10 Pro Mini Accidentally Confirmed for Rogers Tweet

Rogers was the first carrier in North America to offer the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 so it's only likely that they'd also get first crack at the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro. Somehow, the carrier accidentally spilled some beans showing they will be doing exactly that.

According to RGB Filter, the Rogers on Demand mobile (ROD Mobile) app page has a pop up window that shows compatible devices. Clicking on "available devices" yields a list of phone running among other things, Android 1.6 handsets. Both a Sony Ericsson E10a Robyn and Sony Ericsson E10a Pro Mimmi are listed there yet neither are available from Rogers as of yet. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what is going to happen soon.

Sprint says it overstated EVO launch day sales Tweet

Sprint Nextel Corp said on Tuesday it had inadvertently overstated the launch day sales of the much anticipated EVO 4G phone from HTC Corp, which is touted as a serious competitor to Apple's iPhone 4.

Sprint said on Tuesday the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on the launch day was in line with the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

"We originally reported that the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

"We inadvertently erred in the comparison," Sprint said in a statement on Tuesday.

BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk said he was cutting his estimate for EVO sales in the first weekend to 150,000 from his prior estimate of 250,000 to 300,000.

"Furthermore, our calls to 20 plus stores today indicate that the phone is in short supply, so we do not expect that number to rise significantly in the first week of sales," Piecyk said.

The No. 3 U.S. wireless service provider said it sold six times more EVO phones on the launch date than it did Instinct phones from Samsung Electronics.

Sprint is hoping EVO will help it stem customer losses and give it a head start in selling 4G services. Its biggest rival, Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc, plans to launch 4G services later this year.

Froyo Google Market now offers suggested search Tweet

The Android Market – on Froyo at least – now provides suggested search results when users mistype. For instance, searching for “Hime run battle” no longer yields a page telling you that the Market cannot locate such an app. Instead, a results page saying “Did you mean: Home Run Battle” appears and all the apps with that phrase come up.

We just received a tip from reader Rob, who first noticed this happen a short while ago. When searching for “himerun,” all of the apps with “home” or “run” were offered as suggestions. The same happened when “Twotter” yielded suggestions for Twitter.

A few other Android users have reported the same thing, and all are on Froyo-sporting Nexus One’s. I just tested to see if this would appear on an Android 2.1 EVO but it doesn’t happen yet. Making Sense of Multitouch Tweet

The word “multitouch” gets thrown around quite a bit and it’s not always clear what people are referring to. For some it’s about hardware capability, for others it refers to specific gesture support in software. Whatever you decide to call it, today we’re going to look at how to make your apps and views behave nicely with multiple fingers on the screen.

This post is going to be heavy on code examples. It will cover creating a custom View that responds to touch events and allows the user to manipulate an object drawn within it. To get the most out of the examples you should be familiar with setting up an Activity and the basics of the Android UI system. Full project source will be linked at the end.

Limited edition Silver HTC Desire arriving this week Tweet

UK-based independent retailer Expansys is currently taking orders for the long-rumoured Silver HTC Desire, with the company hoping to start sending out the new Android phone variant in the next two days. That’s come as a bit of a shock, hasn’t it?

The Silver Desire’s being offered SIM-free for a one-off cost, in traditional retail style – with an asking price of £449.99 attached to it. And you can add an extra six quid onto that for postage. It’s not cheap, but it is rather nice.

Sprint CFO: HTC EVO can take on iPhone 4 Tweet

NEW YORK--A senior Sprint Nextel executive is hopeful that the new HTC EVO 4G will entice Sprint customers to stick with the carrier instead of defecting to AT&T for the new iPhone 4 this summer.

At an investor conference here Wednesday, Robert Brust, Sprint's chief financial officer, warned that the summer is usually the time of year that Sprint and all other U.S. carriers except AT&T feel the sting from a new iPhone launch. For the past three years, Apple and AT&T have launched a new version of the iPhone in June and early July. And customers have left their service on other carriers and flocked to AT&T to get the new device.

"Every year all U.S. carriers, except AT&T, go through a little trauma called 'iPhone introduction,'" he said. "We have a little churn issue called 'People leaving to go to the iPhone.' As people's contracts expire they leave and go to AT&T for the iPhone."

But this year, Brust said he is hopeful that the company's first 4G phone, a Google Android device called HTC EVO 4G, will stem some of the losses.

"Our hope is that we won't lose as many customers this year as we have in the past," he said during an interview at the conference.

Brust went on to explain that AT&T's network problems and the new tiered pricing plan the carrier recently introduced for all smartphones and the iPad may give some potential iPhone customers pause. Sprint's CEO Dan Hesse has said the company has no plans to introduce a tiered data plan.

"AT&T has been getting a lot of flack for its network," he said. "People all over the country have been complaining about the service. And they've raised rates for some of their customers. I think they are under a lot of stress right now."

Meanwhile, Sprint has introduced aggressively priced smartphone bundles and it finally has a phone that can take on the iPhone. With its large high-resolution touch screen, 8-megapixel camera, and the ability to turn itself into a Wi-Fi hotspot, Sprint believes the EVO is a compelling competitor to the iPhone even for customers not living in the 4G territory. The Andrdoid-based EVO is also designed specifically for a super fast 4G network, which means applications and video viewing is much faster than on an iPhone when the EVO is used in a 4G network.

Sprint is using Clearwire's 4G wireless network, which it's still building across the country. Currently about 44 million people can access the 4G network. And by the end of the year, Clearwire and Sprint say they'll reach 120 million potential customers.

Sprint tried to stave off defections last June with the launch of the much-anticipated Palm Pre. While the Pre did well in the first days on the market, sales were not even close to iPhone sales. But Burst said the EVO is a much more compelling device than the Pre.

"The Pre was for people who didn't really want the iPhone," he said. "But the EVO is a phone that people can get instead of the iPhone. We were in the distance last year and now we're catching up."

During his presentation at the conference, Brust told analysts that first-day sales of the EVO were strong across the country and not just in 4G areas. He didn't provide specific sales numbers, but he also didn't discuss the company's admission on Tuesday that it overestimated the number of phones sold on Friday.

Initially, Sprint said on Monday that the EVO's first-day sales were three times higher than sales of the Samsung Instinct or Palm Pre on their first weekends. The company later revised that statement saying it had "inadvertently erred" and that the number of EVO sales was equal to the combined three-day sales of the Instinct and the Pre.

This build isn't as polished as the other nightly builds we've been using, and you'll need to uninstall it when switching from a signed build. But it's great to see work progress, and great to see the addition of multitouch.

Chinese Telco To Launch iPad Look Alike In OZ Tweet

Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei is planning to launch an iPad-lookalike tablet device in Australia, as it moves into enterprise and consumer markets.

The Android-powered tablet – pictured – was shown at the recent Computex show in Taipei and reportedly is based on a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It has a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen display with 800 by 480 pixel resolution, and comes with Google Apps preloaded

"Significantly it also came with 3G connectivity and telephony functions," Corner comments.

Huawei plans a press conference in Australia on June 24 at which it will not only show the tablet, but also Android-powered smartphones and "a range of devices for the connected home."

Social Handset Maker INQ Bets on Android & Multitouch Tweet

Frank Meehan, chief executive officer of London-based social handset maker INQ Mobile, said at our Mobilize 09 conference last fall that his company would adopt Android as its main platform. Yesterday, Meehan told GigaOM that it will launch the first of its phones based on Google’s OS, a multitouch device, sometime in the fourth quarter.

“We are going all-Android and touch,” said Meehan. The shift will be yet another blow to Qualcomm’s BREW OS, the underpinning of current INQ devices. But INQ, which was spun out of 3 of the UK after it launched a Skype phone that used its 3G network, will continue to focus on developing devices that revolve around popular, fast-growing Internet applications. And the connections of Chinese billionaire Li Ka-Shing, the sole backer of INQ, will continue to help the company gain traction in China.

INQ in recent months launched a socially aware, Facebook- and Twitter-friendly QWERTY phone, the INQ Chat 3G, of which Meehan told us it’s sold more than 1.5 million units. He expects a big sales spurt soon as his phone company’s handsets are made available in new markets. INQ’s big markets currently include UK, Italy and India.

The Pivot

The shift to Android and touch devices is part of bigger pivot being made by the company. While Meehan declined to give any details, INQ clearly sees a bigger opportunity in selling pricier devices, two in particular.

The first is in retail. While INQ started out making handsets that were “budget” and carried low margins, it spent lavishly to build its brand, which is actually more premium than the products it offered. But in order to get traction in the retail channel, it needs to keep its salespeople happy. Low-end margins bring marginal commissions, which in turn offer little incentive to your salespeople to push your phones. From that perspective, it makes sense for INQ to pursue a different strategy.

Secondly, the world of mobile phones is in a massive flux. Thanks to the introduction of Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android, the whole mobile industry has been up-ended — and some of the traditional handset makers such as Sony Ericsson and Nokia have been having a tough time. Instead of traditional feature phones, the market is likely to move towards the smartphone form factor. Which offers a golden opportunity for new entrants to establish a presence.

HTC, for example, is going after the high end of the Android smartphone market. INQ is focus on the market segment just below HTC, in the process taking on Sony Ericsson, LG and Samsung. Does it sound crazy? I don’t think so. INQ has an important thing in common with Apple and Google (via HTC): It’s a software company that does hardware – — specifically hardware that revolves around web services.

Orange is poised to scrap unlimited data plans from this summer, Mobile understands.

The network is one of a number of operators expected to follow suit after O2 announced today that it would drop unlimited data for new and upgrading customers when the iPhone 4 launches on 24 June.

Industry commentators had predicted that operators would no longer be able to sustain ‘unlimited’ models as the strain on the networks increased.

CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood told Mobile following O2’s announcement today: ‘No operator can afford to have 3% of their smartphone users consuming 36% of data resources.

’It's going to be interesting to see how O2's competitors react to this. Now 3 has the iPhone maybe it will choose to compete with an unlimited offer for its users.’

Orange did not comment.

Virgin Mobile launching HTC Legend June 11th Tweet

This is actually very interesting. For the second device in a row Virgin is releasing a device before parent company Bell. The first device was the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 that came out a couple days before Bell and now it looks like Virgin HTC Legend is going to be available on June 11th… while Bell has this hitting stores on June 16th.

Our tipsters started sending us e-mails late last night and several followed throughout today. We first let you know about this a couple weeks ago but can now confirm that Virgin will offer their first Android-powered device for $79.99 on a 3-year contract and $349.99 no-contract (Bell has this for the same pricing). This is decent pricing as it comes with a 3.2-inch touchscreen with Android OS 2.1.

Update: You’ll see from this retail inventory price list that it shows the confirmed pricing to be $79.99 on a 3-year contract and $349.99 no-contract. In addition, looks like we’ll also be seeing a price drop for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 to $99.99 on a 3-year too.
