Connectify 2.0 Improves Throughput & Range for the Apple iPad

Connectify Creates a Windows 7-Based Wi-Fi Personal Area Network where Users Can Share their Internet Connectivity Anywhere with Improved Performance.

PHILADELPHIA -- Connectify, Inc. announced Connectify Version 2.0, a free software application for Windows 7, which turns any Windows 7 personal computer into a Wi-Fi hotspot allowing users to share their Windows 7-based Internet connection with friends, co-workers, and a multitude of mobile devices, including the new Apple iPad.

Improved Throughput & Range for the Apple iPad

One benefit of Connectify 2.0 is to increase the throughput and range of other Wi-Fi enabled mobile devices. Most highly mobile devices such as the iPad suffer from low radio transmission which reduces throughput speed and range. Connectify 2.0 can radically improve the range and throughput of the wireless Internet on an iPad connected through a Windows 7-enabled based internet connection.

With Connectify 2.0, the iPad is able to leverage the longer range, and have a more reliable Wi-Fi connection from the PC to join more distant Wi-Fi networks. Also, because Connectify can share any Internet connection, it is easy to get the iPad online through wired networks, tethered cell phones, or 4G modems.

Whether users need to set up a mobile office for a team of co-workers, extend the range of their home router, or just make Skype calls with their iPhone at the coffee shop, Connectify acts as a Personal Area Network or mobile hotspot that lets the user connect and share anywhere. In Connectify 2.0 the software detects and identifies devices by different manufacturers. This allows the software to bring full support to devices such as iPads, Nokia multimedia phones, and the Nintendo DSi. For those users who have experienced weak signals, forgotten passwords, or technical networking headaches with iPad Wi-Fi there is finally a solution.

Connectify un-tethers gamers, social Internet users, home users, and business professionals from their local coffee shop, airport, home, or commercial Wi-Fi location and automatically selects an active Internet connection for wickedly fast connectivity. Many games now use both the iPad and iPhone to play together, but because these devices do not support peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connections, they cannot play together without a fixed Wi-Fi access point. Connectify supplies that Wi-Fi network for file sharing and game playing from any Windows 7 PC, allowing games to be taken out of the home and office. Connectify offers a number of Personal Area Network benefits including working in groups, file sharing, playing multi-player games, remote PC and presentation control, and more.

Four Key Reasons to Connectify

* Absolutely Free and Unrestricted. Don't break the bank paying for multiple Wi-Fi connections on the road.

* Software Based Router. Take any Internet connection and share it wirelessly with no additional hardware, wires, plugs, or chargers.

* Connect with Mobile Devices. Easily connect any number of Wi-Fi-enabled devices to your network including laptops, phones, gaming systems, and more.

* Safe, Secure, and Reliable. Wi-Fi-enabled devices can see and join your Connectify hotspot just like any other Wi-Fi access point and are kept safe and secure by rock solid WPA2 Encryption.

"Connectify creates a personal cloud of high-speed Internet connectivity that can be easily shared between multiple users and dozens of simultaneously connected Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as laptops, netbooks, Apple's iPad, Nintendo's DSI, cameras, smartphones, MP3 players, and more. In one sense, Connectify makes Microsoft work on Apple devices," said Alex Gizis, chief executive officer of Connectify. "Now people can walk out of their homes or offices and know they will be able to connect, access, and share all the information they need to be social, productive, and sustainable during the day."

Connectify with Confidence

After installing Connectify, users click the Connectify icon in the system tray, choose the connection they want to share, and then enter a name and password for their wireless network. Easy Setup Wizards will help you walk through the setup, and tool tips that explain everything. Flick the other devices to on and look for the new connection. Join it, enter the password, and users can start sharing information, files, and photos. With the click of a mouse, this mobile hotspot application turns the PC into a Wi-Fi router for multiple users simultaneously.

Connectify Your World

* Connectify is great for reverse-tethering your iPhone: connect your iPhone to your Connectify Wi-Fi hotspot, and whenever your laptop is on the Internet, then your data connections (web browsing, Skype, YouTube, etc.) will go through Connectify.
* Conduct a Skype call with your iPhone or iTouch while using your personal computer to save money.
* Stop paying for multiple Wi-Fi connections for your team or across multiple devices; connect them all simultaneously.
* Take devices like your Wi-Fi phone, Wireless Printer or Eye-Fi-enabled camera from your office when you travel and it works just fine at any hotel or coffee shop, since the laptop is making the network look exactly the same to the devices.
* Allow multiple devices on Wi-Fi when there are sign up restrictions.

Connectify is available now absolutely free. Join our connected community. Go to http://www.connectify.me/ to download the application.

Ubuntu tablet threat to iPad? Nah

Apple mops sweat from brow, puts down smelling salts.

The founder of Linux Ubuntu has laid to rest stories of a tablet version, no doubt causing widespread relief in Cupertino.

Rumours of an Ubuntu tablet circulated over the weekend, based on an interview with Canonical's VP of Alliances and OEM Services. But those rumours have now been scotched by the man in charge, Mark Shuttleworth, who told Golem.de that Ubuntu remains about desktops, netbooks and servers.

Canonical is the company that funds and manages Ubuntu. Canonical's VP reportedly said that a touch screen version of the distribution was in the offing, and mentioned all sorts of places where the distribution might turn up including tablets. At the time we commented that this would seem in contradiction to previous statements, and sure enough Shuttleworth - the man behind Canonical and sometime amateur astronaut - has clarified the matter.

In the interview with Golem.de Shuttleworth makes it very clear that while Ubuntu will be working on a lightweight version for netbooks there is no tablet-specific version planned. The original interview, it seems, was referring to the habit of Ubuntu developers to run the platform on all sorts of hardware, as Linux hackers are wont, including tablets.

Competing with Android and Meego, not to mention iOS, would seem optimistic to the point of self-delusion. Any company, open source or otherwise, who decides to take on Nokia, Microsoft, Apple and Google for ownership of a market that might not even exist is surely fanciful at the very least.

Samsung seeks to challenge Apple’s iPad

Saturday, June 12, 2010

Samsung Electronics looks to challenge Apple in the nascent tablet PC market with an aggressive marketing plan.

An industry source told The Korea Herald that the company plans to launch the tentatively named sPad in August and sell hundreds of thousands of units at competitive prices.

The plan is aimed at taking a lead in the domestic market before Apple’s hugely popular iPad arrives in Korea as early as the third quarter of the year.

Samsung will roll out the devices via SK Telecom, the nation’s top mobile carrier, said the source.
An Apple Inc. iPad tablet computer is held by an Apple employee at the store in London, U.K., on Thursday, May 27, 2010. (Bloomberg)

The sPad will run on Google’s Android operating system and initially feature a 7-inch touchscreen, the high-ranking industry official said on condition of anonymity because of the confidentiality of the matter. Samsung will add an 8-icnh model in October and a 10-inch model in December, he added.

“Samsung and SK Telecom plan to launch an aggressive sales drive for the sPad,” he said.

Samsung declined to comment on the release date and other details of the sPad.

KT, the No. 2 mobile operator, which exclusively sells the iPhone in Korea, reportedly plans to launch the iPad in Korea by the end of this year.

Samsung is striving to catch up with Apple in the smartphone market, even on its home turf, and to prevent a repeat in the tablet category. Apple’s iPhone sales have surpassed 700,000 units just six months of its introduction in Korea.

Many analysts doubt, however, whether Samsung will be able to lure customers away from the iPad given a dearth of content, which is key in the larger-screen device.

Google’s Android Market lags far behind Apple’s App Store in terms of the number and variety of applications available, especially ones for entertainment/ebook devices. Apple said on Monday that there are over 5,000 applications for the iPad, which will also run almost all of the more than 200,000 applications from the App Store, including apps already purchased for iPhones or iPod Touches.

“I expect the iPad to have the upper hand in content. In terms of hardware, the screen size of the sPad is somewhat small,” Choi Nam-kon, an analyst at Tong Yang Investment Bank, said. The iPad features a 9.7 inch touch screen.

“The iPad is a proven model. Given that the sPad is not yet proven, it is not even a matter for discussion which one is better,” he said.

The iPad is surging in popularity, with its international sales surpassing 2 million units in less than 60 days of its launch, Apple’s announced Monday.

A number of PC and handset makers including LG Electronics, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Nokia are expected to jump into the tablet PC market with devices mostly powered by the Android operating system.

The global media tablet market is expected to jump six-fold by 2014, according to recent data from IDC. The market research firm forecast on May 20 that worldwide media tablet shipments will grow from 7.6 million units in 2010 to more than 46 million units in 2014.

“These are early days for media tablets, an altogether new device category that takes its place between smartphones and portable PCs. IDC expects consumer demand for media tablets to be strongly driven by the number and variety of compatible third-party apps for content and services,” noted Susan Kevorkian, program director, Digital Marketplace: Mobile Media & Entertainment.

Video on iPad made easy

Mobile-review have posted an article about Video on iPad made easy. Here is their final conclusion.

Eventually we have one shareware (QuickTime Player), one freeware (HandBrake) and one application legally available for free until May 31 (WiVC). The first one is preinstalled and does not require anything else until you start dealing with HD video. The second can do everything (if you know how to write profiles for coding). Even if you don’t have the necessary experience you can find the settings to convert the video not into 1024х576, but into more visually appealing 1280х720. I think the update will appear soon followed by the proprietary solution.

WiVC upsets only with its slow speed, but you have to pay for quality and high definition. This is not all. The miracles happen when you decrease the quality of resulting video. If you choose 640х480 then we don’t have one minute of playback time to one minute and forty seconds for conversion, but 1:1. As to the latest video trends the high tech 3D effects are likely to thrive with the highest quality (definition and resolution). Whether you need it for relatively old TV programs and serials we watch even ignoring the channels logos? The answer is a resounding no. Unfortunately, the decrease of picture quality leaves the file size mystically unchanged.

The most interesting is arguably the size. It’s an open secret that 16GB of internal storage (in the basic version of iPad) is not enough. It can be the pinnacle of desire for a phone screen, but not for iPad, which display is several times bigger. In other words, to watch video on iPad you will have to buy the 32GB version. If you want to get positive emotions and enjoy the high definition video go for 64GB.

This assumption can be supported by the following figures. One minute of video created with the help of QuickTime Player (HD 480p) requires around 13,75MB of storage. A movie of 1.5 hours will need 1,2GB, and the full season of 24 50-minute episodes of a series will take up almost 16GB, which is the maximum capacity of the basic iPad. One minute of video from HandBrake (with the abovementioned configuration for coding) needs 16,6MB. A movie in this case will require 1.5 GB and the full season – around 20GB. WiVC is even “heavier”– 28,5MB per minutes or 2,6GB for a movie and the record breaking 34,2GB for the full season of a series. Slightly more than 50% of the maximum capacity, but you will have HD picture.

The first draft of the article ended with the comparison of user friendliness and thumbs up for WiVC. The calculations from the previous paragraph may be quite important for many consumers though. No matter how stunning your HD picture is it will not worth much, if it cannot fit in. Such size (of a series) is a bit too much even for 64GB iPad. Finally, the practicality of the third converter reviewed today is under threat and the market is dominated by QuickTime Player, used by many (including me) in order not to look for anything different, and HandBreak, usually discovered by those who are somehow not satisfied with QuickTime Player. To tell the truth I now belong to the second group because 720p is really cool, but enough is enough.

UBM TechInsights Verifies That the Samsung Wave S8500 Features the Same ARM Core as the Apple iPad

Friday, June 11, 2010

OTTAWA, Ontario -- UBM TechInsights announced an important discovery in the application processors of two popular consumer electronics devices. UBM TechInsights analysis has revealed that the just-released Samsung Wave S8500 features the same 1 GHz ARM CORTEX A8 core as that found in the very popular Apple iPad.

"By investigating the Samsung S5PC110A01 application processor and comparing it to the A4 application processor found in the Apple iPad using our specialized lab techniques, we were able to confirm that not only is Samsung the manufacturer of both application processors, but both application processors feature the same 1 GHz ARM CORTEX A8 core manufactured using a 45-nanometer low-power fabrication process," said Young Choi, Senior Manager of the Technical Intelligence Group. "With this find, we begin to see how Samsung is successfully asserting itself as the leader in the wireless and mobile applications processor market."

With the recent surge in sales of the iPad, speculation that the next generation Apple iPhone will also feature the same A4 processor as that of the iPad, and the belief that the soon-to-be released Android OS-enabled Samsung Galaxy S Smartphone will also use the S5PC110A01, sales of Samsung manufactured processors is expected to reach very high-levels. With these key sockets in place Samsung will easily maintain its position as the market leader in application processors that it originally attained in 2009.

UBM TechInsights used the best and latest technical expertise and analysis tools, in combination with years of experience in all aspects of the IP / Technology Lifecycle, to make our determination of the similar ARM cores in the Samsung S5PC110A01 and the Apple A4. iPad Rivals: Over a Dozen Windows and Android Tablets Shown at Computex

Saturday, June 5, 2010

Companies showed off over a dozen new rivals for the iPad at Computex this year, including a nifty 10-inch touchscreen tablet that docks into a speaker from Compal Electronics.

The number of tablets at Computex Taipei 2010 pays testimony to the trend Apple set in motion in April. Now that the company has sold 2 million iPads in just under two months, PC vendors globally want a piece of the action.

In the weeks leading up to Computex, it appeared Google might sweep the show with Android-based tablets, but Microsoft swooped in with some key victories and the launch of Windows Embedded Compact 7 software for small devices.

One company that says it will make tablets using Android, Windows and the MeeGo software developed by Intel and Nokia, also showed off one of the neatest devices at Computex, complete with its own user interface (UI) and speaker-dock.

Compal Electronics, the world's second largest contract maker of laptop computers, unveiled a sleek Android-based tablet with a 10-inch touchscreen and a stereo speaker it docked into. The UI is similar to Acer's Shell UI, which works on Android smartphones. The UI simplifies navigation by making the home screen a room full of objects the user taps using the touchscreen. Tapping a stereo icon, for example, starts music playing.

Demand for tablets has risen thanks to the iPad, Compal CEO Ray Chen said at the show, adding that, "we have a lot of customers that are very interested in tablets."

The company's tablet uses Android version 2.1 and is on offer to PC vendors worldwide. Compal creates designs for vendors to choose from, then manufactures the devices at factories in China.

Acer, the world's second-biggest PC vendor, offered a glimpse of its own prototype Android tablet just prior to Computex, at a news conference in Beijing. It has a 7-inch display and a keypad, but Acer didn't say when it might be released or how much it will cost.

Foxconn reference designSeveral smaller Taiwanese and Chinese companies had Android-based tablets at their Computex booths, including Browan Communications, Firstone Technology, Digitran and FuJian Sanxi Electronics.

7-inch Prowave LifepadArm Holdings, which designs the processing cores popular in Android devices, estimates there will be about 40 tablet devices made using Arm-based processors this year, and several e-readers.

"Android has become remarkably popular in a short space of time," said Tudor Brown, president of Arm, at a news conference in Taipei.

10-inch Malata tabletThree Android tablets were on display at Arm's private showroom at Computex:

Foxconn's N928-1 with a 10-inch touchscreen, the Lifepad by Prowave with a 7-inch touchscreen and Wanlida Group's Malata brand tablet with a 10-inch touchscreen.

Wind Pad 110Micro-Star International (MSI) also showed off an Android-based tablet PC called the Wind Pad 110 at a news conference, but the company will launch a Windows-based tablet first, a strategy some of its rivals also announced.

MSI Wind Pad 100MSI's Wind Pad 100 has Microsoft's Windows 7 on board, a 10-inch display and a UI developed by MSI. It also features built-in 3G and Wi-Fi, GPS and HDMI high-definition video output. It will be available later this year.

Asustek Computer (Asus) also debuted its first tablets, two Eee Pads running Windows software.

A tablet PC from Asustek with Android on board was displayed at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) early this year, but the device did not appear at Computex. Asustek Chairman Jonney Shih said he's not sure the market is ready yet for Android-based tablets.

The Eee Pad EP121 sports a 12-inch touchscreen and has Microsoft's Windows 7 Home Premium operating system and an Intel Core 2 Duo processor inside

Shih said the launch of the iPad has created a unique opportunity for tablet-style devices and he expects demand for such products to grow this year.

Apple launched the iPad on April 3 in the U.S. and last week started selling them overseas in markets including Australia, Germany, Japan and the U.K.

Computex is one of Asia's largest electronics trade shows. The exhibition usually offers a view of what products consumers will see on world markets later this year.

iPad Camera Connection Kit review

Mobile-review have posted their review of the iPad Camera Connection Kit. Here is their final impression.

After all Camera Connection Kit can be a good purchase for those who travel a lot and take minimum things with them every time trying to leave more free space in their bags. The first obvious advantage of iPad+CCK suit is that you do not need to take with you ponderous notebook which is often used as a temporary storage for raw material. The “tablet” will play its part. It will also help to solve some simple work tasks that require receiving emails and writing replies, internet-surfing, some documents editing and so on. Secondly the process of file copying and transferring takes little time. It took me about two minutes to export 1 GB consisting of one 700 MB video and about 100 photos. In other words you can clean your card fast and simple, even when it is vital to shoot photos continuously. And thirdly, both adapters can fit into any, even very small pocket.

I almost forgot that iPad + CCK pack is not a solution for professional photographers who any way prefers to fill up their bags with working tools. That is to say not for those who patiently use 18’’ screen notebooks, not for happy owners of image banks, that keep all the material accumulated during work process and drained by their owners at the end of the process. In the end such a suit is not for those who love to delve in crude RAW files. iPad together with CCK is more likely a solution for amateur photographers like me. For those people who get up early during vacation in order to take packed lunch, get in the bus, and only on the road to another site seeing tour they realise that two- or four- GB card in their loyal Lumix is full of very important material.

The price in US Apple store starts and ends at $29 plus traditional tax. Russian underground channels sell such a simple kit for the sum that is at best equal to 5000 rubles what makes about $170. The conclusion is forced upon you: the kit is worth having but you should buy it abroad.
