Nokia naming conventions

GLOBAL – This morning’s announcement of the Nokia C5 completes what some of you may have picked up on over the last few months – a shift in Nokia’s device naming convention. There are now four series of devices – Nokia Cseries, Xseries, Eseries and Nseries. Whilst the latter two have been around for a while, and Xseries has been around since last year’s Nokia World, the latest addition of Cseries rounds off the complete set. What’s more, within each series of devices, we’re seeing a new range of numbers, from 1 to 9, each signifying the range of functionality on offer, and the approximate prices of the devices – 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest.

Today’s announcement of the Nokia C5 joins its similarly named cousins of the Nokia X3 and Nokia X6, both of which were announced at Nokia World last year. As yet, we haven’t seen a similarly named E or N series device and of course, we won’t be commenting on when either of those might be happening.

This new naming convention is designed to make things easier for users, so they can quickly and easily work out where a device sits within the series and beyond that have a clearer idea of what each series does. Nseries remains the flagship and most advanced range of products. Xseries comes next and focuses on social entertainment. Eseries remains focussed on productivity and business whilst Cseries represents the core range of products.

10 Ways Palm Could Make a Comeback in the Mobile World

News Analysis: Over the past year, Palm has been struggling. The company's Pre and Pixi have yet to gain the kind of market traction the company hopes for. There's little chance of that changing in the short term until Palm gets to work on improving its business. Here are 10 ways it can do just that.

Palm is working on a refresh of its Pre and Pixi software to compete more effectively in the mobile space. An update to its WebOS, which is scheduled to be released Feb. 26, would deliver several features that folks have been waiting for, including video capturing and editing. But all this talk about Palm makes me wonder what the company can do to stage a comeback in a market where it has been largely ineffectual.

The mobile business is dominated by Apple, Nokia and, to a lesser extent, Google. When Palm first announced the Pre, the company hoped that it could live up to its hype. Some even called the device an "iPhone killer." Months later, the Pre is an also-ran in the marketplace. The device fell flat for several reasons, including its original exclusivity to Sprint, battery issues and other software quirks that made some folks turn against Palm's product. The Pixi has suffered a similar outcome.

But it's not quite over for Palm. The company still has the ability to turn things around if it can find a way to revolutionize its products and re-establish itself as a major player in the market. It won't be easy. But there are some strategies it can follow.

1. Revamp the Pre

The Palm Pre is in desperate need of attention. The device pales in comparison to the iPhone. It's not only oddly designed, but it lacks the "wow" value that the iPhone has. In a space where Palm is attempting to compete with Apple, that's a major problem. To turn things around, Palm needs to go back to the drawing board with the Pre and deliver a revision that reflects the current design requirements consumers have.

2. Work on WebOS

WebOS has quickly turned out to be more trouble than it's worth for Palm. The operating system seemed like a fine idea to differentiate the product in the beginning, but it didn't resonate with consumers. Palm needs to take a step back and evaluate what's really needed in WebOS and eliminate all the rest. Multitasking is a must-have, but whether or not the software is really capable of competing against other devices on the market is very much up for debate.

3. Remember Apple's App Store

Developing applications for Palm's OS makes little sense. Currently, Apple has more than 140,000 applications available in its store. Palm has a fraction of that number of apps available for its platform and it has WebOS to blame. Developers want to be able to easily port applications from one platform to another. They can do that between the iPhone and Android. They can't do that with Palm's operating system. Until Palm addresses that major problem, it can't expect to gain ground in the mobile market.

4. Stick with multiple carriers

Whatever gave Palm the idea to lock the Pre to Sprint's network at its launch is anyone's guess. It was a major blunder. Going forward, Palm needs to continue to offer its devices on multiple carriers. Having the Pre and Pixi on Verizon's network is a good first step, but it can't lose sight of the value of ubiquity. I understand that Palm wanted consumers to believe that it was following an iPhone-like strategy, thus making it a real iPhone competitor, but it didn't work. Palm's Pre needs to be carrier-agnostic.

Palm CEO Rallies Team After Warning Wall Street

Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein dispatches a companywide memo assuring his team that plans are in place to boost WebOS sales and increase mobile brand awareness. Palm has warned Wall Street that third-quarter revenue isn't going to hit the mark.

Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein reportedly sent out a memo to all company employees, after warning Wall Street Feb. 25 that Palm's fiscal 2010 third quarter wasn't going to meet expectations.

Rubinstein blamed the revenue disappointment on slower-than-expected sales, which have led carrier partners to put new orders on hold. Additionally, he said employees should be "laser-focused" on driving sales and that several initiatives to increase sales and public awareness were under way.

"We initiated project JumpStart nearly three weeks ago. Since then, nearly 200 Palm brand ambassadors, supplemented by Palm employees from Sunnyvale, [Calif.,] have been training Verizon sales reps across the U.S. on our products," Rubinstein said in the memo, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"Early results from the stores have already shown improvement on product knowledge and sales week over week," Rubinstein continued. He added that employees should expect to get an eyeful of Palm in the future, as new advertisements were headed for billboards, bus shelters, buses and subway stations.

These efforts, Rubinstein explained, are ways Palm has been working to "accelerate adoption and grow distribution of WebOS."

That Palm needed a new strategy likely didn't come as a surprise to anyone. The Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus have been selling modestly since arriving on the Verizon Wireless network in January, and on Feb. 23, Palm's stock prices began falling to their lowest levels since March 2009.

Still, Palm's future hardly seems bleak.

"The fact is, they have cash, they have real revenues in the hundreds of millions and they're selling a fair number of phones," Roger Kay, an analyst with Endpoint Technologies, told eWEEK. "The scale of the phone market is really big. But by most other measures, [Palm's numbers are] pretty good."

Kay said it's important to view Palm's situation within the context of the present phone market, which lately includes incredible buzz about Google's Android OS, as well as Microsoft's announcement of its Windows Phone 7 Series.

In a February report, research company In-Stat described the growth of mobile operating systems as a trend that the market can't sustain.

"There is this issue of buzz, and in this market you don't want to lose the buzz," Kay said. "You don't want people to say, 'That was interesting, but we're on to other stuff.' There's a marketing expenditure that Palm's going to have to maintain to remain relevant."

Kay added that the flaw wasn't in the Palm product, and he found the Pre and WebOS to be strong. Instead, the issue is more a matter of balancing the right ecosystem, the right OS, the best distribution and developers, and, of course, being the subject of buzz.

"Over the next few quarters there will be a trend established, and it'll either be positive or negative. If Palm continues to grow, even at a slow rate, they'll be a viable platform," Kay said. "If the buzz is good, people will eventually come around."

Rubinstein concluded his memo by assuring his team, "Our goals are taking longer than expected to achieve, but I am still confident that our talented team has what it takes to get the job done."

He signed off: "Go team!!!"

Palm WebOS 1.4 for Pre, Pixi Smartphones Imminent

Palm is expected to push out WebOS 1.4 to Palm Pre and Pixi handsets at any moment, according to several reports. The long list of expected improvements includes a fix to the browser and simpler options for making calls and interacting with contacts.

Sprint has confirmed that Palm Pre and Pixi devices will receive an update to WebOS 1.4 on Feb. 26, according to Engadget—which later reported that the Sprint blog post confirming the update had been removed.

The update has been expected for February, however, so time is running out.

Both Engadget and PreCentral.net report getting hold of the full change log and say Palm owners can expect the following:

"Fixes:

• Time Zone bug fixed.

• Network time sync bug fixed to reflect accurate Network time.

• [Bluetooth] car-kit transition to device corrected.

• No EV-icon bug fixed (random)

• Random browser formatting bugs fixed.

• Fixed bug that incorrectly displayed Sprint when actually was Digital Roaming.

Enhancements:

• Phonebook Transfer [...]

• Supports Video Capture capability [...]

• Performance enhancement within Phone and Calendar applications"

Additional changes are said to include the ability to dial a phone number from within a meeting event; new e-mail sorting options, the ability to add embedded phone numbers or e-mail address to Contacts; the ability to forward SMS [Short Message Service] messages to e-mail; and improvements to the Universal Search feature.

The Application Launcher is said to include an improved user interface, and the Palm Pre alone will receive Adobe Flash 10 Beta.

Reportedly, customers will be asked to allow the installation and download, or they can initiate the process in the Updates application.

Though Palm warned Wall Street Feb. 26 that its fiscal third-quarter 2010 was going to fall short of expectations, largely due to sluggish sales of its Pre and Pixi models with Sprint and now Verizon Wireless, WebOS has roundly been considered a success.

The previous update, WebOS 1.3.5, arrived Dec. 28 and included strong improvements—such as the ability to correctly play audio files and support animated GIF files—as well as smaller fixes, such as correctly displaying the Pre product name in default e-mail signatures.

iPhone and Android smartphone users have been found to be surprisingly similar when it comes to application downloading habits, says a new report from AdMob. Its survey also found that Android users are predominantly male, and iPod touch users won’t be running for president any time soon.

Apple users have been said to be a breed apart, but a Feb. 25 report from AdMob reveals that the behavior of Apple iPhone and Google Android platform users is “remarkably similar” when it comes to mobile applications.

AdMob conducted opt-in surveys with consumers using devices that run the iPhone, iPod touch, Android and webOS platforms and found Android and iPhone users to be downloading applications at very similar levels.

“However, iPhone users continue to download more paid applications, with 50 percent of users purchasing at least one paid application a month compared to 21 percent of Android users,” said the report. “The survey also included consumers on [Palm] webOS devices and found that while they were active, they downloaded fewer paid and free applications.”

On average, of the 8.8 applications downloaded by iPhone users, 1.8 were paid for. iPod touch users pay for 1.6 of the 12.1 apps they download each month, while Android users pay for 1.1 of 8.7 apps and webOS users pay for 0.6 of the 5.7 apps they download each month.

iPhone and iPod touch users, of course, also have access to more applications, free or not, than Android or webOS users. The Apple App Store offers more than 100,000 applications, while Google’s Android Market is stocked with 20,000-plus and the Palm App Catalog has grown to approximately 1,000 strong.

Still, iPhone users actually spent the least amount of time using their applications each day, reports AdMob. While, on average, iPod touch users spent approximately 100 minutes a day using their applications, webOS users spent 87 minutes, Android users spent 80 minutes and iPhone users spent 79 minutes.

AdMob additionally found the Internet device category to be speeding along, accounting for 12 percent of ad requests in a July survey and approximately 17 percent in January. (Morgan Stanley reported in December that, within five years, it expects more people to connect to the Internet using a mobile device than a desktop PC.)

It also turn out that Android users are predominantly — 73 percent — male, while iPhone use is pretty equally split between the sexes. The iPhone crowd was also found to be a rather mature one, with the average user being 14 years older than the average iPod touch user — 78 percent of whom are under 24.

Apple’s more mature crowd was, on average, also happier with their devices, with 91 percent of iPhone users saying they’d recommend their device, while only 77 percent of iPod touch, 84 percent of Android and 69 percent of webOS users said the same.

What's new in Palm webOS 1.4?

The latest update to Palm webOS is now arriving on your phone via an over-the-air update. The update is now available for customers on the Sprint network in the US and on the O2 UK, O2 DE, O2 Ireland, and Movistar networks in Europe. [February 27: The update was released today for customers using the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus on Verizon Wireless.] The update is expected to be available for Palm webOS phones on other networks soon. Highlights of the latest update include:

* The ability to capture, edit, and share video: Not only can you easily shoot video footage from your Palm webOS phone, but you can also make quick edits and upload your footage to YouTube or Facebook (or send them via email or MMS) with just a couple of taps. See the video capabilities in action in the video below.

* Enhanced notifications: The LED in the gesture area now lights up and pulses if you have a notification (even when the screen is off). You can also customize notification sounds in Messaging, Email (on an account-by-account basis), and Calendar. And there are new notification sounds in the ringtones library to give your more customization options for your alert.

Google Earth Lands for Nexus One, Other Android Phones

Google Feb. 22 made its Google Earth application available for Android, a move that could boost adoption of the application that let users see satellite and 3D imagery of terrain, roads and other layers all over the planet. The search engine-cum-smartphone-seller polished the code and released it to run on the Nexus One as well as any device running Android 2.1 or later versions. Users can continue to expect that Google apps they enjoy on their desktop PCs and Mac computers will be adapted for the Android platform. This is part of Google's big bet in a prolonged march on the mobile frontier versus Apple and its iPhone, Palm, Nokia and, now, Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

Google Feb. 22 made its Google Earth application available for Android, a move that could boost adoption for the application that let users see satellite and 3D imagery of terrain, roads and other layers all over the planet.

Google officials first showcased Google Earth running on the Google Nexus One at the smartphone's launch event Jan. 5.

The search engine-cum-smartphone-seller polished the code and released it to run on the Nexus One as well as any device running Android 2.1 or later versions. Google Earth for Android will let users click on an icon to see photos and videos, or read about prominent places. Users can also customize the app to display the layers that matter most to them.

Borrowing from the desktop version of Google Earth, Google Earth for Android also includes a "roads layer," which offers road labels drawn on top of the satellite imagery.

Google expects users will leverage the voice recognition capabilities in conjunction with Earth for Android to execute searches by speaking into their Nexus One or other Android 2.1-plus devices.

"This is our fastest mobile version of Google Earth yet, with a smooth frame rate and a beautiful 800-by-480 screen," Peter Birch, product manager for Google, noted.

That should make for quite a nice combination on the Nexus One, as well as the Motorola Droid, which is slated to get upgraded to Android 2.1 soon.

Users can download Google Earth in the Android Market now.

Users can continue to expect that the Google apps, Web services, and various and sundry features they enjoy on their desktop PCs and Mac computers will be adapted for the Android platform.

This is part of Google's big bet in a prolonged march on the mobile frontier versus Apple and its iPhone, Palm, Nokia and, now, Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

Google Nexus One Marching to Verizon March 23, Vodafone in April

Verizon Wireless will begin offering Google's Android 2.1-based Nexus One smartphone on March 23, according to an anonymous Google employee after sources found the Nexus One has passed FCC inspection for use on Verizon's CDMA network. The Telegraph said the Nexus One is coming to Europe in April despite earlier plans to roll out there in March. Neither Google nor Verizon Wireless responded to confirm or deny the points as of this writing. Getting the Nexus One on Verizon Wireless' leading wireless network is key for Google to gain more traction on the mobile Web, as it will enable more users to use Google applications and see more ads.

Verizon Wireless will begin offering Google's Nexus One smartphone on March 23, with Vodafone selling the device in April according to industry news sources.

Neowin cited an anonymous Google employee for the Verizon launch of the Google Android 2.1-based Nexus One, which sources such as Unwired View said has passed FCC inspection for use on Verizon's CDMA network.

Specifically, the FCC has just approved an HTC-built CDMA smartphone with the model name PB99300, numbers putting it in close proximity with the GSM/HSPA version of the Nexus One, which is coded PB99100.

The Telegraph, meanwhile, said the Nexus One is coming to Europe in April despite earlier plans to roll out there in March.

A Google spokersperson told eWEEK, "When we introduced Nexus One, we announced that Verizon would be a carrier partner and the device would be available in the spring. However, we haven't announced a specific date yet."

For Google, launching the Nexus One on Verizon Wireless' leading wireless network is key to gaining more traction on the mobile Web, as it will enable more users to use Google applications and see more ads.

T-Mobile's 3G coverage has been spotty at best, though the phone itself has also had issues. Verizon, meanwhile, helped the Motorola Droid become the hottest selling smartphone based on Google's Android operating system and far fewer coverage problems have been reported for this device.

While not impossible, a March 23 date for a Verizon-subsidized Nexus One might be an early blessing.

When Google launched the Nexus One from its Webstore Jan. 5, Google officials pledged Verizon Wireless and Vodafone would begin offering the devices in the spring.

Currently, users may buy the device unlocked through Google's Webstore for $529 and with a two-year contract from T-Mobile for $179.

In other good Android news, the Android and Me blog said every Android phone released in the United States will be upgraded to Android 2.1.

However, some Android phones will require a wipe when they are upgraded to Android 2.1 and a PC-based install for upgrading to Android 2.1 instead of receiving over-the-air updates.

Google's Nexus One coming to Verizon on March 23

Verizon will release Google's Nexus One Android device on March 23 according to sources familiar with the matter.

The Nexus One, originally released on T-Mobile in January, has passed FCC inspection for use on Verizon's CDMA network and according to a Google worker who wishes to remain anonymous it will be made available on March 23.

Verizon will introduce the Nexus One on the day the International CTIA wireless show begins in the US. It's not yet clear whether Verizon plan to hold a press conference at CTIA regarding the launch. Pricing and tariffs are not yet known but our source said they would be "competitive."

The Nexus One is available unlocked for a price of $529 currently. Consumers can also order the phone through T-Mobile for $179 with a two year contract. In related news the Nexus One is expected to be available in Europe from April on the Vodafone network.

Google Launches User-Generated Street View

Although it continues to face criticism from European privacy authorities about Street View, that hasn’t stopped Google from adding features to the service. The latest to launch is a kind of user-generated layer to Street View that uses photos uploaded by individuals to create a pseudo-3D panorama of a specific spot. Although there aren’t going to be enough user photos to do this for every site or building, it’s an additional way to get different perspectives on popular landmarks.

If the new feature sounds familiar, that’s probably because it is very similar to a photo feature launched by Microsoft in 2008 called Photosynth, which also takes user-submitted photos of famous sites that have been shot from all different angles and generates a 3D panorama from them. The main difference between the two is that Photosynth requires Silverlight — Microsoft’s competitor to Flash — which only runs on Windows (and Intel-based Macs). Although Google’s new feature doesn’t have a cool name like Photosynth (they just call it “navigating through user photos in Street View,” it offers the same basic functionality, and is available to anyone with Flash).

Google started incorporating user photos into the Street View part of Google Maps last year. It started with photos from Google-owned photo service Panoramio (which has been an option within Google Maps for some time) and more recently added support for Flickr photos as well. But all that did was show you specific photos (if they were geo-tagged properly) when you looked at a location in the regular Google Maps view. With the new feature, which is described in a video embedded below, the photos are superimposed on a Google Street View of the location, and you can easily switch from one to the other.

The benefits of this are obvious when you take a browse through one of the locations that Google has implemented the feature for: the Plaza Orologio in Prague. Street View gives you a view of the street taken from the Google car, but it is static — when you click into the user photos of the plaza, you can easily move from one view of the buildings to another, seeing them from different angles and perspectives, and you can even zoom in on details of the various buildings. The pictures appear in a row superimposed on the street view, so you can click to advance from one to the next, or there are also navigational controls built into the page as well. Another example is the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
