Nokia N900 software update release 1.2

ESPOO, Finland – Attention Nokia N900 owners: there’s a new software update coming your way this week (UK release today, and global release tomorrow Wednesday, May 26). Version 1.2 (V10.2010.19-1) comes offering a range of enhancements to the already bursting Maemo5 mobile computer. Join us after the jump to find out what’s in store.

First up – new games join the veritable arcade already on offer in Ovi Store. Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster, Zen-bound, Angry Birds (level pack), Sygic, Kroll, Weatherbug, and GoGadget are all available to keep you entertained. Important to note though that Ovi Store will do a full switchover this week Thursday, May 27, so these games and other for-purchase apps will show up then.

Next are the improvements to communication. Email has been improved with the ability to accept or decline an event invitation right there in your inbox, and Facebook IM chat has also been bundled in. The release also brings with it video calling, allowing users face-to-face chatting anywhere.

An additional update you will be pleased to hear about is portrait browsing on the internet is a-go on the N900. Ovi Maps also gets the update treatment with changes to the UI, improving the experience of finding your way around. And finally, there’s also a change to the menu system UI with the first level now customisable.

Moving away from the update and to look at MeeGo and the Nokia N900. Many of you have been asking whether the new MeeGo platform will be supported on the N900 once it’s device-ready. Although Nokia N900 devices are being used for platform development and testing purposes by those involved in the MeeGo project, Nokia doesn’t have plans for a full scale commercial MeeGo upgrade on the Nokia N900. The reason? It’s really about ensuring that you have the best possible experience designed for the features on your Nokia N900 device. Nokia realises this news may be a disappointment for some, rest assured that Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo software on your Nokia N900, as evidenced by the PR 1.2 (V10.2010.19-1) update available today.

Wine on the n900

Sunday, May 16, 2010

ARM based superphone n900 running the x86 wine binary via a statically compiled arm qemu binary, within an x86 chroot. I needed to enable misc binary binfmt support for x86 so stuff could fork /bin/sh.

I have been having trouble getting this going, with incomplete x86 chroots (like a basic old expanded color.gz from slackware). My cheap NAS had a backup dd of an old hardy install, so I nfs mounted via wifi on the phone, loopback mounted the image and was using that. This will no doubt have an impact on performance.

Wine is then running notepad (I think this is a wine version so not a perfect test, but I have run pscp.exe too, which is totally native). This video shows it's quite acceptably fast :)

TODO: get a proper chroot, probably debian ready made versions. I need /tmp/.X11-unix/ bind mounted for X11 stuff to work and proc and devpts for screen and other unix utils.
I need to better automate how this fits together and maybe even package it for the maemo extras repository.

My goal is running pandemonium at full speed. The graphics were a tad more sluggish than I'd hoped and PANDY.EXE didn't work on my initial attempt, but otherwise this still might work.

Left the [prevyu]- version Of opera Of mobile 10 for the platform Of maemo

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

The company Of opera Of software let out the browser Of opera Of mobile 10 for the operating system Of maemo. Let us recall, previously left its versions for the mobile platforms Windows Of mobile and Symbian Of s60. The version Of opera Of mobile 10 for Maemo thus far has status by [prevyu], as developers reported, this project is not basic and small command in its free time was occupied by it. It is completely possibly, final version so never and will leave, although to thus far conjecture early. Browser is compatible with the plane-tables Of nokia Of n900 and N800/N810.

Opera Of mobile 10 for Maemo supports the technology Of opera Of turbo, laying, supplementary sheet, the synchronization Of speed Of dial with other browsers Of opera and all the remaining possibilities, which are accessible in the versions for other OS. Although, some functions thus far do not work as the support Of adobe Of flash and built-in screen keyboards. Is a number “of [bagov]” - the not always smooth warming up of screen and the discovery excess empty supplementary sheets each time, when strange application loads. The browser Of opera Of mobile 10 for Maemo is accessible for the load here.

[Meego To N900 Status Update] Hardware adaptation for Meegoproject goes open

Harri Hakulinen, Nokia project lead of ” MeeGo to N900″ said “Nokia N900 will dual-boot MeeGo and Maemo 5” as we reported earlier. Now he gives us another news that the “N900 Hardware adaptation for Meegoproject goes open ”

Harri Hakulinen, Nokia project lead of ” MeeGo to N900″ said

Hello Meego’s,

As indicated in my previous mail about “MeeGo for N900″ status, we were planning to open up our MeeGo work around N900. Now I am happy to announce, that we are there ;)

First, to make it absolute clear for everybody: This is about open MeeGo adaptation to N900 device.
Like any other MeeGo project, it is open source project for all applicaple purposes, and does NOT directly have links to any potential Nokia product or potential product plans. So, based on this or any other of my posts, please do NOT start or continue speculation of upcoming Nokia MeeGo releases. That is practically not helpfull, and mostly only takes our time when we need to explain our words and actions in detail to various directions.

>From our part, we are trying to implement the open development model that has been discussed now so many times around MeeGo. On practical terms, we are trying to work based on proposal by Carsten Munk, see http://wiki.meego.com/Proposal_for_Best_Practices_for_working_in_a_MeeGo_team

We have already created some resources that will be used by the team, you can learn about those and the upcoming ones from http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/N900. We have IRC channel for realtime discussion, we will use meego-dev mailing list for normal discussions and announcements, and we will have Gitorius project for code.

We will evolve our practicies during the work, so if you are interested, stay tuned to those channels. I belive that soon we are also able to figure out, what is best way for community members to help us in development, and then effectively be part of the team.

I would also like to use this as opportunity to introduce the team behind this work (so far) and also thank them about their hard work and long hours. We have team that consist of some Nokia subcontractors and also growing team of Nokia personel:

“MeeGo for N900″ team (so far)

- Cybercom Turku team; Marko Saukko, Jouni Peltonen, Sami Sirkiä, Jari Smura and Luka Milovanov.
- Cybercom Tampere team; Kalle Lampila,Teemu Tuominen,Tuukka Mäkinen and Ville Marjusaari.
- Carsten Munk via Nomovok
- Jarkko Nikula via Atomide
- Jan-Simon Möller from Linuxfoundation
- Nokia team; Alexander Kanevskiy, Felipe Contreras, Markus Lehtonen, Ameya Palande, Sakari Poussa, Roger Quadros and me.

In addition to official project team, many Nokia people have helped us despite their hectic daily work, even with their free time. Most of them are driven by the desire to open, repurpose and upstream all relevant sw that has been originally created for Maemo 5 based N900 product during previous years.

Marko, Jouni, Sami & Luka and Markus were working with me already on last year when we did prototypes and interoperability tests of Maemo & Moblin stuff combined in different ways. Based on those we had pretty good picture of what we are doing and why.

And of course, we have had very good and productive co-operation with various Intel teams since those times. Anas Nashif and many others from Intel’s MeeGo team have done a lot for us by enabling ARM stuff in MeeGo OBS and repositories.

Last but not least, I want to give special thanks to Stskeeps (alias Carsten Munk ;) . He has teached us how to operate on open, and he has also done respectable amount of this work since early days of Meego. In addition to that, I belive that his earlier work on Maemo community and on Mer project has in fact inspired all of us and shown a way to MeeGo alredy years ago.

Br,
//Harri

We’re back! Opera Mobile 10 on Maemo

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

We’re proud to present the first preview build of Opera Mobile 10 for Nokia N900 and N800/N810.

Back in 2005, Nokia released the Nokia N770. The included web browser was developed by Opera Software. In 2008, Nokia chose to stop including Opera with Maemo, switching instead to a browser developed internally. Today’s preview build marks our unofficial return to the Maemo platform, after a little over 3 years of absence.

This Maemo version of Opera Mobile 10 was created as a hobby project by a small team of developers in their spare time. In total, about 6 man-weeks were spent on creating the release. It’s worth pointing out that this is not an officially-supported release. As such, it has not undergone our usual quality assurance processes, and at times may not feel as polished or complete as an official release. This also means that there may never be a “final” release of Opera Mobile 10 for Maemo devices, since it’s just that much more fun to add shiny new features rather than fixing boring old bugs.
Opera Mobile running on N900 and N800

The preview build contains the same features available in Opera Mobile 10 for Symbian and Windows Mobile smartphones. These include fast and economical browsing with Opera Turbo, bookmark and Speed Dial sync with other Opera products, and of course multiple tabs. For more information, see our rundown of Opera Mobile 10 features.

We have two additional treats for Maemo users: this is the first public release of Opera Mobile to include Carakan — our new Javascript engine.

Unfortunately, JIT support for ARM was not yet stable enough to include, but the speed advantage we gain from Carakan compared to Opera Mobile running on other platforms is already quite substantial.

The second treat is the Mobile debut of our Vega rendering library which — among other things — is responsible for rendering all the exciting new eye-candy like CSS3 rounded corners and shadow effects.

There are a number of known issues with this build, listed below:

* Adobe Flash and other plugins are not supported.
* Screen tearing may be visible when panning, especially in portrait mode. We expect to fix this in a future update.
* The built-in on-screen keyboard is not supported. Use the physical keyboard or the on screen keyboard included with Opera Mobile.
* There is no power management support. In practice this means that if you open a page with animations and leave Opera running, you will soon be using a payphone. Power is drained even when Opera is running in the background and/or the screen is turned off.
* If you set Opera as the default browser, for example by installing the Browser Switchboard, an extra empty tab will get opened every time you open a link from an external application.

Opera Mobile 10 on Maemo supports portrait screen mode, and will choose screen rotation automatically by default, based on the device orientation. It is also possible to select a specific screen mode manually from the settings menu. This works out-of-the-box on the N900. For the setting to work on the N800/N810 you need to install an additional kernel driver for rotation support.

The fullscreen button on N800/N810 only affects the native titlebar and menu. The “fullscreen” setting in the settings menu only affects Opera Mobile’s UI elements.

Download and install Opera Mobile 10 on your Nokia N800/N810/N900 using the phone’s default browser.

In case you encounter problems, please report bugs and issues using our bug wizard. We also welcome feedback on our forums.

Many thanks to the other Opera Mobile teams, as well as to the Carakan and Graphics teams for all their help in making this possible!

Best regards,
The Smooth Sailing Team at Opera Software’s Göteborg, Sweden office
