SEOUL, South Korea & LAS VEGAS — Samsung, a leading provider and innovator of mobile phones, and Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO), a leading global Internet company, announced a strategic global partnership to distribute Yahoo!’s popular services on millions of new Samsung mobile phones in more than 60 countries. Samsung will pre-load Yahoo! services, including Yahoo! Go for Mobile 2.0, Yahoo! oneSearch, Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger, on its mobile phones beginning in the first half of 2007. Samsung has already launched its first mobile handset, the SGH-E570, pre-loaded with Yahoo! Search. Samsung plans to greatly expand the number of its mobile handsets with pre-loaded Yahoo! services in 2007 and will roll out Yahoo! oneSearch after it goes live globally in the coming months.

Many Nexus One fans have been watching the Google Nexus One web site to see when the dreaded “coming soon” to Verizon message would go away and the phone would be available for order. That may not ever happen as a check today shows the Google Nexus One site no longer indicates it will be coming to Verizon.

The Google Nexus One site now says you can buy the Droid Incredible, a “similarly feature-packed cousin of the Nexus One.” Sure looks like the Nexus One isn’t coming to Verizon after all. Perhaps Verizon decided not to play with Google’s experiment of selling the phone itself.

PayPal has announced that it will facilitate in App Purchases in iPhone and Android market. It is being reported that payment via PayPal can now be an alternative to the current payment methods in the Android Market or from Apple store to purchase any application. You can now easily buy android applications without using your credit card.

Paypal’s Benelux Country Manager Dennis van Allermeersch announced in a meeting held in Amsterdam headquarters,

“We have found a way, Apple is OK with it”.

Currently, possibility to buy an app from android market is very restricted and Android apps can only be purchased via Google Checkout using a credit, debit, or gift card and Credit cards in many countries are not as common as they are in the USA. But now android users can use Paypal as an additional payment method in the Android Market without being dependent on Google Checkout.

Paypal will be providing its app payment service for purchasing iPhone and Android apps from 2nd quarter 2010 and will be supported in US, Canada, UK, France, Italy, Netherlands and Australia. So, the wait is just few days apart, and then it will be easier to make transactions for purchasing apps.

Additionally, PayPal will be offering alternative payment option to iPhone as well but will be restricted for physical goods and services like iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or related accessories and not for media purchase via iTunes. PayPal’s iPhone app “iPhone Library” will facilitate to accept PayPal payment directly from users and has already been submitted for approval.

Multiple NFC-enabled Android handsets to arrive from late 2010 Tweet

Inside Contactless and NXP, the leading suppliers of NFC mobile phone chips, say the first commercial Android NFC phones will arrive later this year — with many more to follow in the first half of 2011.

NFC mobile phone chip suppliers Inside Contactless and NXP have both told NFC World this week that the first commercial NFC-enabled Android phones will arrive on the market later this year and that a wide range of NFC phones will be available from early 2011.

"First phones will be available this year and some more first half of 2011," Henri Ardevol, general manager of secure transactions at NXP Semiconductors, has told NFC World.

Loic Hamon, vice president of Inside Contactless' NFC business line, agrees. "We are very much in the real designing phase," he told NFC World, "working to win business from handset manufacturers for commercial handsets." While there is still nine to twelve months of development work to be undertaken by manufacturers before handsets will be ready to go on sale, he added, the first commercial NFC handsets will be available by the end of 2010 and there will be a "vast portfolio of phones next year for sure."

Both companies have announced moves to further support the development of open source Android NFC devices this week. Inside Contactless is making it easier for developers to begin work on creating NFC software for Android devices by placing its Open NFC protocol stack software on the Sourceforge.net website for anyone to download free of charge. And NXP, in conjunction with Trusted Logic, has released its own open source Android NFC API under an Apache license.

Both companies also claim that theirs is the superior solution, however. And both have announced plans to put their technology forward to the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), the group of 65 companies that developed Android, for adoption as the reference implementation — the de facto standard — for NFC in Android devices. This has raised concerns that competition between the two companies could delay the debut of NFC-enabled Android phones rather than hasten their arrival.

That is not likely to happen, though, Ardevol told NFC World. "We do not think that we will go head to head," he explained. "OEMs providing Android phones want standard solutions, not proprietary ones. Not having a clear sign on the Android reference implementation will increase the risk of delay at OEMs... We will welcome Inside Contactless to the next steps as we think it is valuable to get more feedback and go with only one proposal to OHA."

Which solution will win the day? Inside Contactless' solution covers Linux, Windows Mobile and MeeGo as well as Android and, says Hamon, its solution is the most open — it has open-sourced all the code for its NFC protocol stack while NXP and Trusted Logic have only made available an API rather than the full source. However, "our solution is available now and everybody can get access to it without waiting further," says NXP's Ardevol.

Inside Contactless says it will release an Android NFC chip simulator and board to developers by the end of the third quarter of 2010.

Cisco reading a 7-inch tablet of its own? Tweet

Cisco may be developing its own tablet device for the near future, a supposed leak may have given away late yesterday. During the most recent episode of CNET's Buzz Out Loud, an Irish listener's e-mail response about 37 minutes into the podcast claimed that Cisco is working on a 7-inch, Android-based tablet that would most likely be used for business communication. It would probably have hardware tailored to this with a front camera, dual microphones with noise cancellation, and possible support for Cisco-oriented features like VPN access and WebEx for meetings.

The tip didn't have details as to when the tablet would come out, what price it would carry or other hard release info. However, its focus could keep the costs relatively low as it wouldn't need a significant amount of internal storage, advanced media hardware or other extras to achieve its goal as a business tool.

Cisco hasn't commented on the accuracy of the rumor.

Highlights included new strategic agreements for cloud-based data backup and smart-grid solutions; expanded managed mobility and communications solutions for key vertical industries; and new IT and communications professional consulting services. Available from both companies, the new solution is designed to automatically transfer data from a client location to a specially designed off-site data center via Verizon's secure high-speed private network.
* A managed mobility solution designed to help government agencies manage and secure their mobile assets. The solution, Verizon's Mobility Management for Government (MMG), helps agencies protect physical and intellectual assets while meeting the unique security mandates of federal agencies and other public institutions.
* Expanded IT consulting services that give IT administrators a high-level overview of each layer of the IT "stack" – network, data, applications and users. The Verizon IT Analysis Service enables customers to better pinpoint performance and security issues, identify cost savings, and better plan for future growth.
* A new application management service that offers enterprises end-to-end management of SAP applications and delivery platforms. The service enables enterprises to more effectively deploy and manage essential SAP applications such as financial analysis and logistics management while reducing complexity and controlling costs.
* Expanded unified communications and collaboration consulting services that help enterprises better integrate UC&C technologies into their business processes to achieve better performance. * A new integrated suite of security services, offered from McAfee, that helps medium-sized businesses protect against network, endpoint, Web, data and e-mail security threats for a monthly per-user fee.
* A wireless broadband backup solution for small and medium-sized businesses – Verizon Internet Dedicated Access with Mobile Broadband – that automatically routes Internet traffic to the Verizon Wireless 3G EV-DO wireless network in the event of a service disruption.


Expanded Focus on Vertical Industries

Verizon continued its increasing focus on key vertical markets during the first quarter, including the rollout of new capabilities:

* An information technology platform, the Verizon Medical Data Exchange, that enables the digital sharing of physician-dictated patient notes. Previously, the lack of an interoperable, nationally available platform made it difficult to share such notes, which primarily form the basis of electronic health records.
* An agreement with CURRENT Group under which the companies will jointly deliver integrated smart grid solutions for electric utilities.
* A managed wireless security service offered in conjunction with Motorola Inc. that will be available via Verizon's Framework for Retail, a technology platform that Verizon Business is designing to help retailers improve their IT performance and enhance their business processes.


Network Leadership and Global Expansion

Verizon Business continues to invest in its leading global network, which underpins the essential network computing platform for the company's integrated solutions. Network developments during the quarter included:

* Installing 11 additional Private IP edge routers for a total of 763 edge routers in 215 sites throughout 59 countries including the expansion into Hanoi which provides city diversity in Vietnam and adding a diverse site in Shanghai to enhance Verizon Business' MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS) leadership position in China;
* Upgrading its Private IP network core backbone into three additional Latin American locations – Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Santiago, Chile, which quadruples the backbone bandwidth into Latin American in support of customer growth and higher access speeds, while improving resiliency and positioning the network for expansions into additional cities;
* Installing eight new Converged Packet Architecture (CPA) switches including three new diverse sites in Pittsburgh, Pa; Seoul, South Korea; and Shanghai, China; and five new cities in Pune, India; Hamburg and Munich, Germany; and Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Vietnam. This brings the total number of CPA switches to 142 in 125 sites in 33 countries.

Industry experts continued to recognize Verizon Business' global capabilities during the quarter. This recognition included:

* Gartner Inc. placed Verizon Business in the Leaders quadrant in several reports during the quarter.
