Yahoo! Accelerates Social Momentum

Integrates Facebook Globally Across More than 15 Yahoo! Sites.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Continuing its commitment to be the center of people's online lives, Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) announced new product integrations that continue bringing the best social experiences from across the Web to Yahoo! consumers around the world.

"More and more, people rely on social sites to share and discover information that matters to them, making Yahoo! uniquely positioned to provide people with all of the mainstream methods of content discovery - social, search, communications, and editorial," said Cody Simms, senior director of Social Platforms and Yahoo! Developer Network (YDN) at Yahoo!. "Starting with Facebook, we are bringing all of these elements together to give people one simple, trusted place to share information and connect. We think this offers great benefit to people across the web, and it's key to helping Yahoo! extend our reach and increase engagement."

Today's announcement covers:

* Facebook Integration -- Yahoo! has reached an important milestone in its partnership with Facebook. Starting this week, people who use both Yahoo! and Facebook can link their accounts and view and share updates with friends across both networks. People who connect their accounts can consume their Facebook News Feed on the Yahoo! homepage and in Yahoo! Mail and other Yahoo! sites and services. Additionally, people who create and share content on Yahoo! sites - including Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Sports, Flickr, and many Yahoo! entertainment sites, such as omg!, Yahoo! TV, and Yahoo! Movies - can easily share their actions with friends back on Facebook. Additional integrations will be ongoing.
* A Refresh of Yahoo! Profiles -- Launched in October 2008, Yahoo! Profiles has allowed people to manage their identity and activities across Yahoo! from a central location. Yahoo! has refreshed the experience to make its privacy settings easier to use and to give people a central dashboard to manage what they share on Yahoo! from the external social accounts and apps that they have linked to Yahoo!, starting with Facebook and with others to come later this year. Yahoo! Profiles has been renamed Yahoo! Pulse to better reflect its broader ability to manage Yahoo! settings, privacy, and account links. The updated experience is available at http://pulse.yahoo.com.

"From news to sports to entertainment, Yahoo! sites provide ideal experiences to share with friends," said Ethan Beard, director of Facebook Developer Network. "By integrating with Facebook on a global scale, Yahoo! is building upon an already valuable brand to give people easy ways to share the content they enjoy on Yahoo! with their friends on Facebook."

Social and Yahoo! - Recent Milestones

Over the last few months, Yahoo! has been weaving the best social experiences from across the Web into the Yahoo! network to create more personally relevant online experiences for consumers worldwide, using its global cloud computing infrastructure. Upcoming and recent milestones include:

* Zynga Partnership - Later this year, Zynga, the company behind hit social games such as Farmville and Mafia Wars, has agreed to integrate its games into the Yahoo! Application Platform (YAP), making them available to people throughout the Yahoo! network.
* Koprol Acquisition - The recent acquisition of Koprol extends Yahoo!'s social, mobile, and local offerings and focuses on the intersection of location, community expertise, and mobile experiences.
* Yahoo! Updates "Firehose" - Earlier this year, the Yahoo! Updates firehose API -- which aggregates social updates from Yahoo! and other sites across the Web and makes them easily available to publishers and developers -- was rolled out.
* Citizen Sports Acquisition - Strengthening Yahoo!'s overall social strategy, the recent acquisition of Citizen Sports brings the world of sports to Facebook and mobile devices through innovative applications.
* Facebook Contacts Integration - Yahoo! Mail launched import contact functionality from Facebook into Yahoo! Contacts so people can build a more robust online address book.
* Facebook "Like button" - Facebook users who visit Yahoo! Finance and Yahoo! Sports can now easily "like" items such as sports teams or stock quote pages and share those actions with friends on Facebook.
* Twitter Partnership - Earlier this year, Yahoo! announced a global partnership to integrate Twitter's real-time social experiences across Yahoo!. Yahoo! Search results already draw from the full stream of public tweets, and the broader agreement is scheduled for implementation later this year.
* Developer & Publisher Solutions - A suite of social APIs and services enable publishers like the Huffington Post and thousands of others to leverage the power of the Y!OS social platform via partnerships with JS-Kit Echo, Meebo, Gigya, Jan-Rain, among others. More information is at http://developer.yahoo.com/publisher.

Yahoo! is deeply committed to privacy - not just as a written policy, but as a fundamental consideration applied to each and every Yahoo! site and service. Yahoo! offers simple controls so that everyone can change who sees their updates, or turn off their updates stream at any time. Yahoo! Gives Parents a B+ for Taking Action to Protect Children Online

Internet Safety Month Survey Reveals Dads Are Taking More Action Than Moms When It Comes to Children's Online Safety.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- To honor National Internet Safety Month in June, Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) is sharing data discovered from a recent survey exploring how parents monitor children's online behavior and how people manage their digital reputations. As a longtime industry leader in child safety, Yahoo! continues to make safety a company priority by supporting efforts to educate children, parents, adults, and communities about safe online experiences.

Yahoo! conducted the online survey with Ipsos OTX in April 2010 to gain insight into consumers' behaviors and perceptions with respect to online safety. The survey is based on a sample size of 2,003 Internet users in the United States, ages 18-64 years old.

Parents are taking action, but cyber-bullying education is needed:

Yahoo! celebrates the parents who are proactively monitoring their children's online safety and are having appropriate discussions with their kids. The Yahoo! survey shows:

* 78% of parents are concerned about their children's online safety.
* 70% of parents talk to their children about online safety at least 2-3 times a year; 45% talk to their children at least once a month.
* 74% of parents are connected to their children's profiles on social networking sites.
* 71% of parents have taken at least one action to manage their children's use of the Internet or cell phones such as:
o Check to see where children are searching online.
o Set time limits for children's use of computers or cell phones.
o Set parental controls on video sites.
o Use filters to limit where children go on the Web.

It was no surprise to discover that cyberbullying continues to be a concern for parents. While parents are acutely aware of the potential issues, they are unsure of appropriate action. Data shows:

* 81% of parents know what cyberbullying is.
* 1 in 4 adults (25%) who are aware of cyberbullying have either been victims or know someone else affected by cyberbullying.
* 37% of parents feel that they know what to do about cyberbullying.
* Almost three-quarters (73%) of people want their child's school to play an active role in teaching kids about online safety and citizenship.

Dads are doing their part, and then some:

Today's fathers spend more time with their children than three decades ago and take on more household responsibilities, according to the Families and Work Institute1. The Yahoo! survey found that some of that quality time is devoted to helping children navigate the Web and other technology.

* 71% of dads (compared to 63% of moms) say they are taking at least one action to help manage their children's online behavior including having conversations about respecting the privacy of others and checking their children's privacy settings.
o More dads than moms have had a conversation with their children about their digital reputations and how to promote a positive online reputation.
* Fathers more often check to see what personal information can be easily found about their children by searching for their names online.
o 53% of dads surveyed told us they plug their children's names into a search engine at least 2-3 times per year (compared to 38% of moms) - 33% of dads told us they do this search at least once a month.
* Dads spend slightly more time talking to their children about online safety. 47% of dads have the conversation at least once a month or more; 42% of moms have the conversation at least once a month or more.
* According to the survey, more dads than moms use filters to limit where their kids go online, and more dads monitor the time children send text messages and how many text messages they send.

"Yahoo! applauds the parents who are taking an active role in keeping their kids safer online, and we want to give them valuable advice and resources so they can earn an 'A' for their efforts," said Catherine Teitelbaum, director of child safety, Yahoo! Inc. "We encourage parents to use Yahoo! Safely -- an online resource catered to kids, parents, and educators which provides relevant, up-to-date strategies and tools to help foster safer online experiences."

Yahoo! Safely (safely.yahoo.com) helps inform parents, students, and teachers about online safety through timely videos, simple strategies, and advice from nonprofit safety experts. Yahoo! Safely offers the following tips for young people to help prevent cyberbullying:

* Own your digital reputation. The Internet is a public space, so before you share photos or personal details, make sure it's info that you'd share with teachers, colleges, or job prospects.
* Keep your private information under your control. Keeping Internet conversations (and your user names/profiles) free of personal information like your password, full name, or even the name of your school, is important.
* Be nice (and pass it on)! Be respectful online and treat people the way you'd want to be treated. If someone is being disrespectful or bullying you, try to ignore them and use privacy tools to block them from viewing your full profile and contacting you.
* Know your rights. You have the right to not respond to email or other messages that are inappropriate or make you feel uncomfortable. If you get a message that doesn't feel right, show it to your parents, guardians, or another trusted adult and report the incident to your Internet service provider.
* Have a family chat. Talking with your parents or guardians doesn't mean giving up your privacy. Everyone benefits when you're on the same page about online activities, including when you can go online, how long you can stay, and what activities you can do online.

People need to take control of their digital reputations:

Education is key to empowering people to protect their digital reputations, and according to the recent Yahoo! online safety survey, 65% of people do not know or are not sure what a digital footprint2 is and 31% do not feel they are in control of their online image3.

The survey also concluded that 48% of respondents do not realize or are not sure if the information they put on the Web will remain online forever and 7% think that it won't remain online forever if they simply delete it. Some other key findings include:

* 20% of people plug their own name into a search engine once a month or more; 49% do it 2-3 times a year or less.
* Adults ages 18-34 are more proactive about managing their digital profiles than adults 35-49 and adults 50+.
* These are the top three actions young adults take to manage their digital profiles:
o Limit personal information available on social networking sites/blogs.
o Keep strict privacy settings on social networking sites/blogs.
o Avoid allowing people access to social networking sites/blogs unless there is a relationship offline.

Teitelbaum commented, "Everyone should conduct an online search of their name or their child's name once a month. It's not a vanity search. It's learning what's out there and ultimately taking control of your digital reputation."

Yahoo! recommends these simple tips to manage a digital reputation:

* Know your connections: Only connect with people you know offline.
* Think before you post: Once something is posted online, it's virtually impossible to take back because words, pictures, and videos can be easily forwarded, copied, and taken out of context.
* Protect your personal information: Posting personal information or photos can identify you to strangers. Never reveal personal information to people unless you are friends with them offline.
* Configure your settings: Take the time to understand the profile settings that are available to you on websites and social networks, and tailor those settings for you.
* Understand your digital footprint: On a monthly basis, search for your name on search engines, like Yahoo! Search, and on social networks to understand what type of content is associated with you.

To learn more about how to be safer online, go to Yahoo.com and search for "online safety."

Yahoo! Acquires Koprol; Extends Social and Mobile Strategy With Location-Based Community

Expands Offerings in Rapidly Growing Emerging Markets.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. & JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) announced the acquisition of Koprol. Headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia, Koprol extends Yahoo's social, mobile and local offerings and focuses on the intersection of location, community expertise and mobile experiences that have become important trends around the globe. Koprol enables users to interact and share knowledge about their community in a way that is uniquely tailored to mobile phones.

Koprol allows people to connect and share photos, reviews and additional information about locations in real-time using just their mobile phone browser, making the service accessible to a larger percentage of mobile users. Once on Koprol, people can "check-in" to their current location and see where others are and what they are doing. The service helps people find local businesses, such as popular shops or restaurants, based on user ratings including a "thumbs-up" feature to elevate favorite places to the top of the ranking. Users can also start or join discussions based on particular locations and invite friends to participate, creating a unique city-based social mobile community resource.

"Users are increasingly relying on mobile devices to communicate and access the Internet and they are looking for seamless integration between those devices and PCs. This is especially true in many emerging markets where we are introducing the Yahoo! brand to many new-to-Net users," said Rose Tsou, senior vice president, Asia Region at Yahoo!. "Koprol was uniquely designed for mobile phones and within a year has already built a strong user base. Yahoo! provides the global scale and technology to accelerate growth in Indonesia as well as introduce the service to new markets."

Yahoo! is focused on providing personally relevant content to its global users on multiple devices and access points. Koprol aggregates a database of locations within a city, created through its community, so that people can find friends or discover new local businesses, neighborhood resources and discussions that are important to them. Yahoo! plans to leverage the rich community of information generated by Koprol users to make its properties and applications, including its homepage and media and communications products, even more locally relevant.

"We are excited to join Yahoo! and look forward to the opportunities being part of a global Internet leader presents," said Fajar Budiprasetyo, CEO and co-founder of Koprol. "From the beginning, we have leveraged Yahoo!'s open technologies to help build our business, and it was just six months ago when we were showcased at the Yahoo! Hack Day held in Indonesia. This is a great success story for the online community in Indonesia and demonstrates that innovation is recognized wherever it occurs."

Yahoo! will continue to invest in evolving Koprol's service, such as the new BlackBerry(TM) application introduced today, and expects to announce new mobile applications for both local and global mobile platforms in the future.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Nokia and Yahoo! team up in online services

Monday, May 24, 2010

New York, USA – Today Yahoo! and Nokia have joined forces to create enhanced, online experiences that help you communicate and locate. The pair have been working together over the past five years on a number of projects, from launching Yahoo! Go Mobile on Nokia devices to Nokia devices’ ability to upload pics onto Flickr. This latest venture, their biggest to date, will see improvements to email, instant messaging, maps and navigation services. Join us after the break to find out what changes the new alliance will bring.

As part of the alliance Nokia will be the exclusive provider of Yahoo!’s maps and navigation services, branded as “powered by Ovi.” Nokia brings its ample experience in top-drawer, location-based products and maps to Yahoo!’s users. In turn, Yahoo! will become the exclusive global provider of Nokia’s Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services, branded as “powered by Yahoo!.” Yahoo! brings its expertise in world-class internet offerings to the table for Ovi users.

Changes will also come in the form of Nokia and Yahoo! working together to improve access to a number of services. Initially, users with an Ovi ID will be able to unlock a myriad of handy internet and handset-based goodness from both partners. Some of the pain involved in trying to remember which of your hundreds of passwords you used may soon be over.

Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO, Nokia had this to say about the announcement:

“We’re enabling millions of Yahoo! customers in key markets including North America to discover the unique capabilities that Ovi Maps brings. Similarly, Yahoo!’s online expertise will bring exciting mail and messaging enhancements to millions of Ovi Mail customers across almost every country around the world, many of whom will have their first Internet experience on their mobile.”

Carol Bartz, CEO, Yahoo! joined OPK in his enthusiasm:

“We’re excited to expand the reach of our best-in-class Mail and Messenger services, bringing personalized experiences to more people across the mobile Web, particularly in emerging markets where we are seeding the next generation of Yahoo! users. At the same time, we believe Nokia’s strength and continued investment in maps and navigation will greatly enhance our existing products, enabling us to focus on areas that are core to our business.”

The collaboration will see benefits to both Yahoo! and Nokia. Nokia will be able to engage with Yahoo!’s millions of users, particularly in the U.S. and vice versa. Exclusive: Yahoo Poised to Unveil “Project Nike” Partnership Deal With Nokia at Monday Event

Friday, May 21, 2010

Yahoo sent out an invite for a press conference in New York on Monday with a mysterioso tone:

It read, vaguely:

“Please join Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz for an exciting announcement about providing global consumers with rich online and mobile experiences, and bringing forward a new era in keeping consumers connected.”

That’s all it took to get BoomTown on the horn to find out what that meant.

And, according to sources, that will be a deal with Finland-based mobile phone giant Nokia (NOK) to build Yahoo (YHOO) email, search and other applications and services into a range of its devices.

While the pair had once discussed Nokia making a Yahoo-centric phone, sources said that is unlikely to be part of this deal.

Such a partnership–code-named “Project Nike” after the Greek goddess of victory and not the sneaker–has been batted around for many years between the companies without result, even as Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL) have grabbed the spotlight and business in the exploding smartphone market.

Yahoo has had a range of various mobile initiatives and has had many, mostly failed, partnerships with carriers and telecom makers.

But without its own phone or mobile operating system, such as Google’s Android, the Internet giant is essentially nowhere in what has become the most important digital sector today.

Nokia, which makes more mobile devices–mostly “feature” phones, not smartphones–than any other company, has also struggled to keep up the lightning-fast pace of innovation and has been looking for ways to compete as the landscape shifts dramatically.

That’s why the long-festering deal was placed again on the fast track, especially by Bartz, who has put a lot of emphasis of late on showing Yahoo to be more relevant and cutting-edge.

Thus, the Nokia deal is likely to be a splashy centerpiece of next week’s investor day on Wednesday in Silicon Valley, which will feature Bartz and her senior management, including Americas EVP Hilary Schneider.

Schneider has played a lead role in the Nokia deal, which sources said closed two to three weeks ago.

Bartz will also be appearing at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York next week, a speaker addition that will be announced soon, where she is likely to discuss the deal.

Yahoo has been on a bit of a deal tear of late, purchasing social publishing start-up Associated Content for $90 million earlier this week.

And while the Nokia deal will likely garner a lot of attention when announced, execution will–as usual–be key in determining if this works, especially since both companies are now in a much weaker position.

“Recently, Nokia has offered devices that people don’t want and Yahoo has launched mobile services that they don’t want,” said one person familiar with the talks. “Perhaps in working together, they will find a way to finally create some value.”

Yahoo declined to comment and Nokia has not responded to an email I sent tonight.

Yahoo! to Acquire Associated Content

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Extending Leadership in Content With the Addition of 380,000 Contributors.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., -- Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Associated Content Inc. This strategic move extends Yahoo's ability to provide high quality, personally relevant content for the benefit of more than 600 million users as well as tens of thousands of advertisers. As Yahoo! enhances its social, mobile, local, and media offerings, the acquisition of Associated Content reinforces the company's longstanding promise to offer the best of the Web -- by combining Associated Content's approximately 380,000 contributors who provide rich and varied content on a broad array of passion points, with Yahoo's leadership in partnering with established content brands and the award-winning team of editors and experts from Yahoo!.

"Combining our world-class editorial team with Associated Content's makes this a game-changer," said Carol Bartz, CEO, Yahoo! Inc. "Together, we'll create more content around what we know our users care about, and open up new and creative avenues for advertisers to engage with consumers across our network. These are important aspects of building engaging consumer experiences on Yahoo!, and one of the reasons why we're one of the most visited destinations online."

"The Associated Content team and our 380,000 contributors are looking forward to joining Yahoo! and to the opportunities that being part of a global Internet brand presents," said Luke Beatty, Associated Content founder and president. "Combining our crowd sourced content with Yahoo!'s distribution, world class editorial team and online marketing leadership will accelerate our growth as we continue to leverage our best-of-breed platform to deliver high quality compelling content on more than 60,000 topics."

For advertisers, this deal will expand Yahoo! into more topic areas and real-time content generation. The combination promises to offer advertisers even more opportunities to engage groups of passionate consumers in ways they will find uniquely appealing to their interests and tastes. Having insight into user intent through its leading search products enables Yahoo! to identify topics important to advertisers and users. Yahoo! plans to use Associated Content to create content around those topics and leverage Associated Content to contribute content to existing media properties. Associated Content also provides more opportunities for Yahoo! to partner and collaborate with publishers who can help the company shape the tremendous variety of content coming in, into something bespoke and even more engaging.

While current Associated Content content is U.S.-centric, Yahoo! expects to scale the platform globally.

Associated Content was founded by Luke Beatty in Denver, Colorado, in 2004. Associated Content receives more than 16 million unique users per month (comScore) and the editorial staff reviews more than 50,000 pieces of content per month, including articles, images, audio and video.

Yahoo! expects to complete this acquisition in the third quarter of 2010. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Yahoo! and Nahdet El Mahrousa Launch Social Entrepreneurship Competition for Young Professionals in Egypt

Friday, April 23, 2010

'Social Innovation Starts With YOU' campaign will feature 10 successful Egyptian entrepreneurs; winners will receive grants and support to help bring their ideas to life.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. & CAIRO -- Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) underscores its commitment to the Arabic-speaking world by announcing a new social entrepreneurship campaign and competition in partnership with Nahdet El Mahrousa, an Egypt-based nongovernmental organization (NGO). Yahoo! Inc., Yahoo! Middle East, and Nahdet El Mahrousa are spearheading an unprecedented online campaign called "Social Innovation Starts With YOU" to encourage social entrepreneurship among young Egyptians.

This campaign is aligned with the U.S. Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship that will take place on April 26-27, 2010, in Washington, D.C., where Yahoo! cofounder Jerry Yang will deliver a keynote speech addressing entrepreneurship and innovation.

"Yahoo!'s announcement to acquire Maktoob last year shined the spotlight on tech entrepreneurs in the Arab world and the incredible potential and talent in the region that is largely untapped," said Ahmed Nassef, vice president and managing director of Yahoo! Middle East. "This partnership with Nahdet El Mahrousa continues our commitment to invigorate and grow the Internet market in the Middle East as a whole and will enable the next wave of tech entrepreneurs from Egypt to realize their dreams. We can't wait to see their innovative ideas!"

Social Innovation Starts With YOU

Today there are more than 16.5 million* Internet users in Egypt, representing one of the largest** Arab Internet populations. The "Social Innovation Starts With YOU" campaign is aimed at inspiring and motivating young online Egyptians. Starting in April, two successful Egyptian social entrepreneurs will be featured on the "Social Innovation Starts With YOU" website (http://eg.socialinnovation.yahoo.com), sharing their compelling stories and providing advice to up-and-coming entrepreneurs. In June, up to 10 entrepreneurs will be featured, and visitors to the website can vote for the entrepreneur who they think has made the biggest impact on their communities. The winner will be featured on the front page of Maktoob.com and invited to be a judge for the campaign's Social Innovation Competition.

In the Social Innovation Competition, launching in June, Yahoo! and Nahdet El Mahrousa will invite individuals from across Egypt to be the next social entrepreneurs of the year by developing new ideas in the fields of education, health, environment, and a wildcard category. The campaign's website will serve as an entry point for aspiring entrepreneurs by providing an online toolkit of inspirational stories, advice, resources, and Web services to get them started. Ten winners will be honored with monetary grants and technical and management support to help bring their ideas to life. Among the winners will be already existing social entrepreneurs who will receive support to scale their efforts and achieve wider impact. In total, Yahoo! will contribute $500,000 to the campaign, and as part of that, will provide close to $250,000 in monetary grants to awardees. In addition to monetary support, the awardees will receive training and mentoring support for three years to help ensure their success.

"In partnering with Yahoo!, we are furthering Nahdet El Mahrousa's mission to engage and activate young Egyptian professionals in the development and public arenas and in shaping Egypt's future," said Ehaab Abdou, cofounder and board member of Nahdet El Mahrousa. "The 'Social Innovation Starts With YOU' campaign will provide a valuable platform for budding social entrepreneurs in Egypt to help make their enterprise ideas become a reality, as well as help existing social enterprises scale up. As an added benefit, we believe that supporting emerging and existing enterprises will help create new jobs for Egypt and the region."

Builds on Yahoo! Middle East's Efforts

Yahoo!'s social entrepreneurship campaign with Nahdet El Mahrousa follows its announcement in August 2009 that Yahoo! had acquired Maktoob.com, the leading online community in the Arab world, which has more than 19 million unique users. This acquisition is part of Yahoo!'s larger strategy to grow its business throughout the world's emerging markets by connecting consumers with the content and services that matter most to them in their local language. Internet users benefit from the combination of Yahoo!'s popular products and services with Maktoob's compelling local content, which reaches one in three people online throughout the region. The acquisition extends Yahoo!'s current offerings by adding capabilities to deliver relevant Arabic-language content and services, as well as Arabic versions of Yahoo!'s popular Yahoo! Messenger and Yahoo! Mail services.
