Marvell: £60 Android phones for 2010

Chip maker Marvell has a new bit of kit for Mobile World Congress it reckons could revolutionise smartphones and usher in the era of the $99 (£60) Android blower. Want to know what it does, and when? Read on and we’ll explain all.

We last heard from Marvell when it launched its new chipset for e-readers, aimed at bringing down prices and speeding up page refreshes in digital tomes like the Entourage Edge. Now it’s back with a new processor range for phones, the Pantheon 910 and 920, and a bold promise that they’ll bring the price of smartphones right down.

Currently, most new smartphones cost hundreds of pounds, with the price often subsidised by networks over the course of an 18 or 24 month contract. But Marvell reckons Pantheon powered phones will handle all the power requirements of a modern smartphone OS for far cheaper than ever before. In fact, Marvell’s vice president Weili Dai claims it “makes the vision of a mass market $99 smartphone very real.”

We spoke to Marvell’s head of mobile cellular business, Vivek Chhabra, who told us that though the company was agnostic towards smartphone platforms, and would welcome Windows Mobile phones running on its new tech, he saw Android and “open source” mobile operating systems really benefiting from it, since manufacturers don’t have to pay to use them, with phone peddlers able to bring handsets to market this year using it.

“We will be able to bring the smartphone for the right skills to the emerging market…within 2010,” he said.

Marvell predicts super cheap e-readers on the way
We wouldn’t necessarily expect the same performance from Marvell Pantheon 910 phones as that of a screaming Snapdragon powered blower like the Google Nexus One or or HTC HD2, but Chhabra said that they will still be able to support high definition video playback, 3D gaming and screens up to WVGA (800×480) in resolution, though capacitive screens at that size will naturally drive the price up.

Although Marvell has yet to announce what partners it’s working with, the company says “top tier” names are involved. We’re excited to see what they can come up with: if Marvell is true to its word and its roadmap, we’ll be seeing HTC Tattoo-like phones at rock bottom prices. And if the performance is up to scratch, that should have the likes of INQ very, very scared. Unless of course, INQ has a budget Android phone of its own planned.

Google, Apple pile pressure on phone world

But gravity might not favor the world's biggest maker of cellphones, as the focus of the $169 billion industry shifts to software and services, the "mindshare" that is lifting nimble competitors such as iPhone maker Apple and Google.

For the first time, Nokia has opted out of the Mobile World Congress this year, another trend set by Apple, which eschews industry get-togethers in favor of its own, carefully choreographed events.

Nokia will host some meetings nearby, but is reported not to be planning any new phone launches.

At the same time the fair will be flooded with new phones using Google's Android platform.

The other big names in the industry, Microsoft, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, have also been struggling with the pace set by Apple and Google, ever since the first iPhone took the world by storm in mid-2007.

Nokia is seen among the best positioned to cope with the onslaught thanks to its own operating system, investments in services, and huge scale benefits in phone production, but Apple already makes more profit from phones than Nokia.

Trying to replicate Apple's success in selling mobile software through its App Store, Nokia, Microsoft and others have opened their own online stores, but with little success.

"Everybody is struggling. There is a lot of hype, but there is not a lot of dollars," said Dana Porter, vice president for strategy at phone-billing and customer-management software maker Amdocs.

ANDROID INVASION

Google's high-profile presence at the show with a keynote speech from Chief Executive Eric Schmidt will remind the industry just how quickly relationships and revenue sources that once seemed assured can change.

The Web search giant last month started to sell the Nexus One, a touchscreen smartphone it sells directly to consumers, bypassing the operators who normally control the sale of phones in Europe and the U.S.

Having seen the destruction Google has wrought in the media sphere to previously cozy relationships between publishers, advertisers and readers, the telecoms industry is nervous.

Google also said this week it planned to build a super-fast Internet network for up to half a million people in the U.S., a project that could loosen telecoms companies grip on Web access.

As well as potentially upsetting operators, Google's open Android platform also presents a threat to makers of rival smartphone platforms, including Nokia and Microsoft.

"Android is a very large boulder rolling toward the mobile market," said Fjord's Lindholm. "I think what we will see is an Android invasion."

The Nexus One, Google's first own-brand device, is also the first concrete sign it is paying serious attention to hardware.

Although Google has built considerable loyalty and a huge advertising business around its search engine and gmail services, these are free to consumers.

Apple, on the other hand, has persuaded more than 100 million consumers to hand over hundreds of dollars apiece for its iPods and iPhones.

MORE TRAFFIC

Top hardware makers plan to roll out increasingly cheap smartphones in 2010 to battle the new rivals in the mass market.

"It seems that volume champions like Nokia and Samsung are opting to get down and dirty in 2010; we'll likely see eye-poppingly cheap touch-screen devices this year," said MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen.

With average smartphone prices dropping sharply, the phones will reach a much wider audience, causing data traffic on operators' networks to soar, especially as video sharing via mobile becomes more commonplace.

"This is a big challenge as it uses a huge amount of data bandwidth," said Martin Garner, analyst at CCS Insight.

Top telecom equipment vendors -- Ericsson, Nokia Siemens, Alcatel-Lucent and others -- will all demonstrate and sell their next-generation LTE equipment at the show, trying to convince operators to choose them to upgrade their networks and handle the data crush.

But analysts say operators' sales in mature markets are not growing fast enough to justify major investment.

Motorola Outlines Plan to Split Into Two Companies

Motorola confirmed on Thursday that it planned to reorganize into two independent companies by the first quarter of 2011, with its mobile handset unit and its television set-top box division being combined and spun off as a separate publicly traded company.

Sanjay Jha will oversee mobile handsets and set-top boxes.

The announced split is meant to finally divide Motorola into smaller, more focused operations, pulling apart the collection of often disparate businesses assembled over the years by the company, which is based in Schaumburg, Ill.

Sanjay Jha, one of Motorola’s two co-chief executives, will oversee mobile handsets and set-top boxes, effective immediately. The remaining operations — Motorola’s wireless networking business and its enterprise radio systems operations — will be headed by the company’s other co-chief executive, Greg Brown.

As envisioned by company executives, the split would create two independent companies, each of which accounted for roughly half of Motorola’s $22 billion in sales in 2009. The companies will be split through a tax-free stock distribution to shareholders. The mobile handset and set-top box business will own the Motorola brand and will license it royalty-free to the enterprise and networking company.

In an interview, Mr. Brown said the enterprise and networks business would assume Motorola’s debt, projected to be a little more than $3 billion at the time of the split. He said he expected the company would retain an investment-grade credit rating.

“Through 2009, we have improved our balance sheet so that both entities will have solid capitalization to have operational and strategic flexibility,” Mr. Jha said in an interview, adding that both companies would also have the ability to obtain additional financing from the capital markets if needed.

While Motorola had previously considered divesting itself of the handset division, which has struggled to find a hit to match its Razr cellphone, the unit’s performance has improved rapidly in the last year, Mr. Jha said. He conceded that in recent years, the business had been a net consumer, rather than a generator, of the company’s cash.

Now Motorola is betting the future of the handset business on producing smartphones built largely on Google’s Android platform. That effort has already borne fruit, according to Mr. Jha. He said the company became one of the largest shippers of smartphones last quarter, thanks to offerings like the Droid phone for Verizon Wireless. He said the company expected to ship 20 smartphone models this year.

Combining the handset unit with the set-top box operations, which deliver digital video services, fits into a “seamless mobility” lifestyle envisioned by carriers like AT&T and Verizon. The idea is that customers would watch content interchangeably on their televisions, computers and mobile phones.

People briefed on the matter have said that Motorola also planned to sell its wireless networking division after the spinoff. Last year, Motorola had begun seeking a buyer for its set-top box and wireless networking units.

A sale of the wireless networking unit could fetch more than $1 billion, according to the people briefed on the matter.

Mr. Brown declined to comment on efforts to sell the wireless networking unit beyond saying that it remained profitable despite declines in revenue.

Firefox for Android coming 'late this year'

Mozilla chats Windows Mobile 7 and MeeGo too.

Firefox Mobile for Android is likely to make its debut on the platform later in 2010, according to Mozilla's VP of mobiles.

Jay Sullivan told TechRadar that Android was a 'great fit' for Firefox mobile:

"It's a modern OS, and it's a great fit with us. It's the type of platform that has a high affinity with the early adopter, and it's seen a lot of uptake."

Sullivan pointed out that the reason for the delay was based on the underlying code:

"Android has been built on a Java platform, whereas [Firefix Mobile] is based on C and C++ code. Until last year when [the Open Handset Alliance] released the NDK (native development kit) which allowed native code as part of the app, it was simply impossible."

Wondering about Windows

Sullivan also spoke of Windows Mobile (which has Firefox Mobile running as an Alpha build at the moment, stating that the new announcement had caused some decisions to be made at Mozilla:

"Now we have the decision: do we target Windows Mobile 6.5 or 7? How much architecture will there be to work with?"

And while admitting Mozilla didn't know a lot about MeeGo, the new alliance between Nokia and Intel, Sullivan highlighted it as an exciting opportunity.

"Nokia has been a great partner for us, helped Firefox Mobile to get better, and we hope that continues.

"Mozilla has also been in Moblin (Intel's previous Linux-based platform) for a while, and that company has contributed a lot over the years.

"It all lines up pretty well, although I don't know how it will all shake out."
