Free Office Mobile 2010 for Windows Phones

Sunday, May 16, 2010

Today not only marks the availability of Office 2010 for organizations, but also the immediate availability of Office Mobile 2010 for all Windows Mobile 6.5 based phones with an earlier version of Office Mobile FOR FREE! via Windows Phone Marketplace. Office Mobile 2010 for Windows Mobile 6.5 includes new mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace. These new mobile versions offer a more touch-friendly layout and greater ability to work with documents on the phone – like editing PowerPoint presentations.

Personally my favorite new feature is the SharePoint and Windows Phone integration. With SharePoint Workspace Mobile 2010 and PowerPoint Mobile 2010 I can access, edit and save changes to a presentation, all while offline, and know the changes will update back to the server. For example, I have access to links and documents from my SharePoint sites and I can select a PowerPoint presentation to view offline on my phone. I can then make quick text edits and be ready to present no matter where I am. Finally, thanks to SharePoint Workspace Mobile when I save the changes these get updated back into the SharePoint server so everybody has access to the latest version of the document.

In addition making Office Mobile 2010 available for download today, we’re also demonstrating some of the next generation capabilities of Office Mobile for Windows Phone 7. Check out this demo of PowerPoint Streaming for Windows Phone 7 that was shown today in New York at the Office 2010 Launch: www.the2010event.com.

Nokia N920 with Meego OS will boost mobility roadmap

Rumor of the successor of the Nokia N900 has already been speculated. It is believed that the new tagline will be N9 or N920 which will run under Linux Meego OS. Meego is a new Linux operating system designed from combination of Maemo and Moblin to serve netbook and smartphone. The idea come out from mutual partnership between Intel and Nokia to boost mobile technology by not just for combining two different Linux platforms under one roof, but for its cross-platform support of both Intel and ARM chips, the latter currently popular in mobile devices like Apple’s iPhone.

not just for combining two different Linux platforms under one roof, but for its cross-platform support of both Intel and ARM chips, the latter currently popular in mobile devices like Apple’s iPhone.

I am having N900 in my hand and just after few months, Nokia decide to come out with a new Meego OS. What happen? Is the Maemo 5 OS really a scrap? what will happen to Maemo 6?

They said that the MeeGo will bring many changes. Base system will be updated , packaging will be changed to RPM (not so good but acceptable), Qt instead of GTK+, less Nokia developers. Using Qt, you can write web-enabled applications once and deploy them across desktop, mobile and embedded operating systems without rewriting the source code.

It is said that Nokia N920 will come with a big 4.13” capacitive touchscreen display, thin body, and will not have a physical keyboard. That’s about all that is known about the new device for now.

But don’t expect it anytime soon. The best case scenario for Nokia N920 launch would be around Mobile World Congress 2010 in February, though I doubt that. More likely, we will see it sometime in spring/summer of 2010.

Well for me, Just use whatever Distro you want as long as we are using Linux Kernel , an open source application, which is free for us to explore and explode the potential on mobility technology.

Nokia N920 Specs …waiting for September

Knowing most of the N920 Specs, I’m still wondering if I will be getting a N920, or staying with the N900. Will the upgrade be something I really want? Will MeeGo live up to Maemo’s lineage? The N920 is, in essence the bridge from Maemo to MeeGo. Maemo6 (Harmattan) is considered an “instance” of MeeGo, but you could also say Ubuntu is an “instance” of Debian. The differences there are big, but how big will they be with the N920?

First off, the hardware differences will likely be WELL worth the upgrade. Both the OMAP 4440 & 4430 processors will be a significant improvement over the N900’s OMAP 3430. That’s no exaggeration either… say hello to multicore processing in your hand!!! According to TI they’re able to do this because of the improvements they’ve made in power management, allowing you to watch 1080P video for 10 hours on a single charge (try watching 10 hours of any video on ANY handheld device/smart phone)!

The existence of MeeGo proves that Nokia isn’t trying to just make a smart phone OS, but a portable one. What does that mean? MeeGo isn’t a smart phone OS trying to find a use on your Laptop, Netbook, & tablet, much like Android has been (hence the reason Google is trying for their Chrome OS), but it is a netbook, tablet OS running on your phone. The difference between the two is significant in that Adobe’s (much hated by Apple) Flash will be installed, just like on your desktop, but don’t worry HTML5 will likely be supported too. Contrary to Apple, you can have both!

What else can we expect from the N920? 64Gb built in memory, with the option to add a microSDHC card (up to 32Gb). Hopefully Nokia will upgrade ram to a respectable 1Gb (with the ability to add another 1Gb from storage memory) from the N900’s 256mb ram + 768Mb virtual. This should allow most users to install nearly every application and still have a fast system when running 6 or 7 “memory hog” apps in the background.

I also suspect that Nokia might take the 12 megapixel camera from the N8 and throw it on the N920, allowing for 720p video recording. And pictures that will leave iPhone 3GS crying at their decade old version of a camera phone. Of course with the ability to record HD videos, it won’t be useful if you can’t display it on a nice large screen over HDMI (The OMAP4 processor supports this). Also I think it might be possible that Nokia will be changing the one thing that has remained the same in the last 5 versions of Maemo devices… screen resolution. Of course this will probably mean the screen size will have to grow a little from the N900, but staying below the N810’s screen size is important for device size too.

Capacitive touch is coming to what I now call the “Tablet-Phone” (previously “Internet Tablet”) lineup, and I imagine Nokia will have multi-touch capability, though in a patent war with Apple, Nokia might not “enable” this feature, leaving it up to an outside app/plugin to enable it.

On the N900, work is already being done to enable the front facing camera for use with Skype, and other streaming video services. Most likely the N920 will have this feature when the box arrives at your door. It’s almost laughable that iPhone users are just realizing the benefits of a front facing camera, with the leaked specs of the iPhone 4th generation. I could see Nokia opting for a better front facing, and if they did, it would make video calls on the Nokia N920 the best experience next to a Desktop/Laptop experience.

Until September, we’ll only be able to speculate (unless Eldar Murtazin get’s his hands on one [like he did with the N900 & N8 ] before NW2010), but the N920 looks like it will be worth the upgrade already.

Skype for Windows Phone 7 Isn't Coming

"Speaking an event in Sydney Dan Neary Asia Pacific Vice President for Skype was hesitant to explain why no development was taking place for the new Windows Mobile offering, however he did say that the VOIP communication Company was developing new offerings for the iPhone, iPad and Android based phones."

Back in March, we reported that Skype had killed the availability of Skype for Windows Mobile as a result of what the company perceived to be fragmentation across the Windows Mobile platform. Considering Microsoft is focused on reducing fragmentation in Windows Phone 7, we were hopeful that Skype would consider bringing its popular VoIP product back to the platform, but that idea now appears dead in the water. What's interesting is that the company is now reluctant to provide a reason. In the meantime, it's planning to roll out new versions of Skype for iPhone, iPad, and Android, and as you know, these are all platforms that consumers are currently going gaga for. With that in mind, we're guessing the real reason why Skype has abandoned Windows Phone 7 development is that it simply doesn't see much potential in it. And only time will tell whether it's spot on about that.

And Top 10 Reasons Why Steve Jobs and Apple Reject Adobe Flash

In the spirit of Top Ten lists, heres Steve Jobs Top Ten Reasons for Rejecting Adobe Flash (for the irony-impaired, please note that this post is not based on the truth):

#10: Adobe Flash is too proprietary to run on any of Apples beautifully open systems (except for all Macs).

#9: Adobe Flash is too much of a power hog to run on any of Apples battery powered devices (except for all Mac laptops).

#8: Very few applications are affected by Apples rejection of Adobe Flash (except for just about all social games, just about all enterprise software packages with modern interfaces, and just about all financial services and health and education web site applications).

#7: Very few web sites are authored using Adobe Flash, as compared to HTML5 (except for 85 of the top 100 web sites in the world).

#6: Very few iPhone, iPod, and iPad users would like Apple to support Adobe Flash (except for an overwhelming majority, including my son).

#5: The Apple community has, over the years, benefited very little from Adobes support (except for just about every graphic designer in the world, who generally use Adobe products on Macs).

#4: HTML5 will someday (in several years) be able to do just about everything Adobe Flash does today.

#3: Someone managed to hack up a very old game to be able to run in HTML5 (in a lab experiment).

#2: Adobe has not backdated any stock options to any Apple executives.

#1: Apple does not need to provide reasons for its decisions about what software they will allow you to run on a device you own.

Wine on the n900

ARM based superphone n900 running the x86 wine binary via a statically compiled arm qemu binary, within an x86 chroot. I needed to enable misc binary binfmt support for x86 so stuff could fork /bin/sh.

I have been having trouble getting this going, with incomplete x86 chroots (like a basic old expanded color.gz from slackware). My cheap NAS had a backup dd of an old hardy install, so I nfs mounted via wifi on the phone, loopback mounted the image and was using that. This will no doubt have an impact on performance.

Wine is then running notepad (I think this is a wine version so not a perfect test, but I have run pscp.exe too, which is totally native). This video shows it's quite acceptably fast :)

TODO: get a proper chroot, probably debian ready made versions. I need /tmp/.X11-unix/ bind mounted for X11 stuff to work and proc and devpts for screen and other unix utils.
I need to better automate how this fits together and maybe even package it for the maemo extras repository.

My goal is running pandemonium at full speed. The graphics were a tad more sluggish than I'd hoped and PANDY.EXE didn't work on my initial attempt, but otherwise this still might work.

A girl from Australia finally touched the finish line to end the sea journey round the world has she been doing for seven months. Jessica Watson 16-year-old girl has successfully become the youngest ever to sail alone, non-stop and not be guided over the surrounding world. Jessica uses her favorite red sailing boat during her voyage.

Thousands of people waited to greet the arrival of Jessica, proponents of direct Jessica cheered when they saw Jessica ship has a length of 10 meters which is entered into the Port of Sidney. Reckless actions of this girl from Australia to sail alone on the ocean was so impressive, where Jessica had to go through trials with 12-meter-high waves, and many people were skeptical and predicted Jessica would not come home alive.

When Jessica was touching the mainland for the first time in 210 days, Jessica was immediately welcomed by both parents who are considered insane who have given permission to Jessica for sailing alone.
