U.S. EPA Recognizes Motorola for Leading Green Power Purchases

Monday, April 26, 2010

Motorola’s renewable energy purchase from NativeEnergy supports new development of clean renewable resources.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced it has increased its ranking to No. 26 on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA's) National Top 50 list of the largest green power purchasers. This increased purchase further demonstrates Motorola's commitment to protecting the environment and builds on its existing relationship with EPA's Green Power Partnership.

Motorola is purchasing 119 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, which is 32 percent of the company's purchased electricity used in the U.S. The company is buying Green-e certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) from NativeEnergy that support the Langdon Wind Facility in North Dakota. This demonstrates a proactive choice to switch away from traditional sources of electricity generation and support cleaner renewable energy alternatives.

Today, EPA updated each of its National Top Partner lists, highlighting some of America's largest green power purchasers. In addition to moving up 20 spots on the National Top 50 list, Motorola also ranks No. 14 on the Green Power Partnership Fortune 500 list, up four spots from this time last year. Each list highlights EPA Green Power Partners that have completed the largest annual voluntary purchases through April 6, 2010. EPA updates its Top Partner Lists quarterly at www.epa.gov/greenpower/toplists/.

“We are pleased to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for our continued efforts to reduce our climate change impacts,” said Jodi Shapiro, vice president, Environment, Health and Safety, Motorola. “Motorola’s innovative spirit is at work, creating more sustainable solutions for tomorrow’s low-carbon and resource-constrained world.”

This purchase also qualifies Motorola for EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club, a distinction given to organizations that have significantly exceeded EPA’s minimum purchase requirements. Green Power Leadership Club members must purchase 10 times the partnership’s minimum requirement organization-wide.

"The road toward cleaner energy, cleaner air and a better future is a journey," said Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation. "EPA applauds business partners like Motorola for taking a big first step by embracing renewable energy."

According to U.S. EPA, Motorola's green power purchase of 119 million kWh is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of more than 16,000 passenger vehicles per year or the CO2 emissions from the annual electricity use of more than 10,000 average American homes.

Since 2005, Motorola has reduced its carbon footprint by 35 percent. In 2009, about 15 percent of Motorola’s global electricity came from renewable resources. The company’s goal is to increase its global purchase of electricity from renewable sources to 20 percent by 2010 and 30 percent by 2020. Motorola’s current purchase of renewable energy credits achieves its 2010 goal.

Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro. These resources generate electricity with a net zero increase in carbon dioxide emissions, while offering a superior environmental profile compared to traditional power generation sources. Green power purchases also support the development of new renewable energy generation sources nationwide.
