Sprint's HTC EVO 4G Out Of Stock, Again

Sunday, June 20, 2010

Planning to buy a Sprint HTC EVO 4G? You have to wait for some days as Sprint has once again sold out of its stock of the device, the first smartphone available in the US with WiMAX .

The high-end Android OS smartphone debuted this month and has become hugely popular within weeks. The surge in demand has been so high that the device has been in and out of stock on Sprint's web site very quickly.

The device manufactured by Taiwan-based HTC comes loaded with features, which makes it one of the most advanced phones available today. The smartphone has a 4.3-inch touchscreen, 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and 4G cellular-wireless networking. The EVO will soon offer video chatting.

On June 4, the day when the device was launched by Sprint, the carrier sold twice as many EVO 4G units as it had ever sold any previous smartphone in a single day. But the growing demand forced Sprint and HTC to put up the sold-out board. A second shipment arrived after some days but it is also out of stock now.

Sprint has put a message on its website, saying that has becoming familiar to those shopping for this model: "Sorry, this device is so hot we can't keep it on our virtual shelves. Check back later - more are on their way!" The carrier has stopped accepting pre-orders at this time, and it is still unclear when the next shipment will arrive.

Sprint's Two Year Improvement in American Customer Satisfaction Index Survey Largest Across All Industries

Friday, June 18, 2010

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --Sprint (NYSE: S) is the most improved company in customer satisfaction, across all industries, over the last two years, according to results from the 2010 American Customer Satisfaction Index.

"Sprint has made improving the customer experience our top priority, and the ACSI index improvement is one more validation that we are achieving this goal," said Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO. "We have focused on improving customer care, enhancing the value of the retail experience by introducing our "Ready Now" device set-up and education service, and by simplifying our rate plans through innovations like Simply Everything and Any Mobile, Anytime."

Sprint's improvement was driven in part by substantial gains in two aspects of the survey. In the area of customers' perceptions of value, Sprint now leads both AT&T and Verizon. The company also achieved an impressive improvement in the area of customer loyalty. With these gains, the company's overall ACSI score jumped 14 points over the last two years. In the last six years of the ACSI survey, no other company has improved its satisfaction score by that many points in a two-year period.

"With Sprint reducing its operational costs, improving customer satisfaction, and differentiating itself in its marketing, we believe that it will rebound this year more strongly than most people expect," said Carl Howe, director of Consumer Research at Yankee Group. "In addition to its offerings of 4G services and iconic handsets such as the new HTC EVO 4G, we see consumers returning to Sprint for one very old-fashioned reason: Sprint's working hard to earn their business."

The improvements in the ACSI survey come as Sprint has seen nine consecutive quarters of improved customer satisfaction and first call resolution. The company's improvements have also been recognized by other independent third-parties, including Sprint winning the #1 spot for both overall satisfaction for wireless voice service providers and wireless data service providers in a Yankee Group and Mobile Enterprise magazine survey of large business decision makers. Sprint also ranked high in small and medium business customer satisfaction. Also noteworthy was Sprint's two-year Reputation Pulse(TM) score increase in Reputation Institute's 2010 U.S. Most Reputable Companies Study (published annually in Forbes). Sprint's 18.22 percent gain puts its improvement in the top 10 percent of the 150 largest U.S. companies, ahead of both AT&T and Verizon.

The American Customer Satisfaction Index is a national economic indicator of customer evaluations of the quality of products and services available to household consumers in the United States. The overall ACSI score factors in scores from more than 200 companies in 44 industries and from government agencies over the previous four quarters. The Index was founded at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business and is produced by ACSI LLC. ACSI can be found on the Web at www.theacsi.org.

EVO 4G overclocked to 1.267GHz!

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Kernel patches for developers here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showt... After some kernel tweaking, I got the EVO 4G to 1.267GHz, up from the stock 998MHz. Linpack results jumped from ~6.9MFLOPS to ~8.8MFLOPS. That's almost a 30% increase in speed! The SetCPU long benchmark jumped by a substantial amount too!

It's a fairly straightforward modification, but overclocking does require a slight voltage increase over stock.

Froyo should make this thing a lot faster, and we can even undervolt/underclock to save battery (we all know the battery life on the EVO isn't exactly the best)! This *should* also work on the HTC Incredible, because they both use very similar silicon, but there are no guarantees - the Nexus can't get this high, for example.

Thanks to toastcfh for his source, Hero_Over for creating the first booting overclocked kernel on the EVO, all the kernel devs in the N1 community, especially pershoot and kmobs, and richardtrip from the Desire community, and all who helped to root the EVO 4G.

Machines talk together and transform business operations with Sprint's M2M wireless mobility solutions

Device-to-device wireless connectivity enables innovative ways for companies to boost productivity and efficiencies - all while conserving valuable business capital.
M2M enables people to stay safe, healthy or enjoy a commute or football game.
M2M benefits a variety of companies, including Amtrak, Continental, RedBull.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --When machines talk, smart companies listen. M2M, or machine-to-machine communication, is fast becoming a market-changing force for a wide spectrum of entrepreneurial businesses. Since launching its Emerging Solutions Group in October 2009, Sprint (NYSE: S) has worked with solutions partners to help a growing number of businesses serve customers - and in some cases outflank their competitors - with M2M innovation.

M2M is about connecting people, devices and systems in new and transforming ways. With M2M, devices "talk" to each other over wired or wireless connections and share data without direct human intervention. In this way, devices as diverse as utility meters, signboards, cameras, remote sensors, laptops, appliances and other consumer devices can be connected to support a variety new uses and achieve increased efficiencies.

"M2M is shattering conventional notions about what a business can deliver for its customers," said Danny Bowman, president-Sprint Integrated Solutions Group. "Business opportunities that were once technically infeasible or too capital-intensive are now both doable and profitable in a short period of time. Sprint's early entry as a provider of comprehensive M2M solutions is already producing results for businesses and their customers, including ingenious applications that make life safer, more productive and more entertaining."

Device-to-device connections are bringing a new way for a restaurant to serve diners with digital interaction and easier directions through major airports with digital signage. In addition, M2M enables such benefits as rapid emergency alerts in a West Coast hospital, a new level of peace of mind for people living with Alzheimer's and their families, entertainment and Wi-Fi access for train passengers, and the chance for fans to post tweets on an NFL stadium scoreboard, to name a few benefits.

Among the companies and organizations that use M2M solutions from Sprint and its partners are:

Alzheimer's Association: Working with strategic partner Omnilink, Sprint helped the Alzheimer's Association put remote monitoring M2M technology to work for Alzheimer's patients. The Alzheimer's Association Comfort Zone(TM) is the first comprehensive location management system designed specifically to give people with Alzheimer's more independence while providing their caregivers options, including the type of device or network connection. For more information, visit www.alz.org/comfortzone/ and www.omnilink.com.

Amtrak: Riders on select Amtrak East and West Coast lines are now cruising with an enhanced traveling experience that includes a revolutionary new digital signage offering. This solution brings passengers breaking news and weather updates, sitcoms and feature films, along with Wi-Fi service to keep them always connected. The services are enabled through applications from Internet Connectivity Group Inc. (I.C.G.) and 3G broadband from Sprint. For more information, visit www.icginfo.com.

Continental Airlines: Continental's employees and passengers at the busy Houston and Newark airports are better able to navigate arrivals and departures with the help of cellular digital signs deployed at passenger gates, terminal ramps, aircraft maintenance areas and corporate training areas. The M2M solution provided by MediaTile and supported by Sprint wireless broadband has helped Continental realize:

* significant improvement in bag handling efficiencies
* reduction of safety incidents
* dramatic improvement in awareness of policies and procedures among staff
* faster deployment and understanding of new policies
* overall improvement in customer satisfaction

2010 Maloof Money Cup Brings Together an Interactive Community: Founded bySacramento Kings and Palms Casino Resort owner Joe Maloof, the Maloof Money Cup is a premier showcase for professional skateboarding. Organizers of the 2010 Money Cup event were looking for interactive solutions to bring fans closer to the fast-paced action. I.C.G. (Internet Connectivity Group Inc.) addressed the need with their wireless interactive digital media infrastructure, powered by Sprint's 3G network along with I.C.G.'s ICMedia(TM) content and content management software. The onsite experience involved three Jumbotrons placed front and center in the skating arena and Festival Village, where fans enjoyed unprecedented access to their favorite competitor performances. Dozens of high definition LCDs were mounted throughout the venue, wirelessly displaying a streaming feed of the competition. The screens also displayed tweets, competitor stats, and photo streams in real time. Sponsor logos were constantly displayed in all applications, ensuring the best exposure for their brands and increasing the placement value to Maloof.

Each time fans engage with I.C.G.'s social networking applications I.C.G. captures user profile information (such as e-mail address, phone numbers and Twitter/Facebook account) for marketing purposes. This information can be accessed via the ICMedia(TM) Web application anytime, anywhere, building captive communities with their fans, patrons, customers and others. The Maloof organization was able to provide fans a next-generation venue experience incorporating wireless video and social networking applications into one seamless reliable network. With the launch of its Emerging Solutions Group in October 2009, Sprint established an industry standard for M2M services, featuring Sprint's unique combination of 3G and 4G capabilities, more than 10 years experience in providing connectivity for non-Sprint-branded devices, and an expanding ecosystem of M2M partners, including device manufacturers, aggregators and OEMs.

Sprint cans employee for leaking EVO 4G sales numbers

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

The tales surrounding the launch of the EVO 4G have been intriguing, to say the least. On June 4th, the device launched. By June 7th, Sprint was touting the phone’s sales as mammoth, claiming that it had broken their previous one-day sales records (as held by the Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre) by as much as 3 times. Just two days later, they recanted that story, declaring that they had “erred” in their original estimations, and that the sales numbers were inline with those of their previous top sellers.

There was, however, a bit of the story which we didn’t see: the part where a Sprint employee used the inventory system to figure out exactly how many EVO 4Gs were sold and posted that number online, resulting in a speedy investigation by Sprint HQ and the employee’s immediate termination.

We’ve reached out to Sprint for a comment on the matter, but here’s the story as we’re hearing it so far from a trusted source: On the afternoon of June 6th (before Sprint had released any sales numbers), a Sprint retail employee posted a note to the growingly infamous phone hacking forum, XDA-Developers, with sales figure details gleaned from their system. The post has since been removed, but bits of it are still lingering in Google’s cache:

“according to sprint we as a [company] have sold 66,483 theres a whole bunch of stores though that dont have any more inventory i dont think any major city sprint does”

According to this employee’s perusing, Sprint had dished out roughly 66.5 thousand EVO 4Gs after a little more than two days following launch. (Note that, as far as I know, this number only accounts for Sprint stores — not third party sellers like WalMart, RadioShack, etc. Even then, this number could be incorrect, depending on how the employee uncovered the number and any updating latency involved. I doubt Sprint’s going to confirm its accuracy, so take it with a grain of salt.)

Now, this post went mostly unnoticed by blogs and other media outlets — but it didn’t go unnoticed by Sprint HQ. As leaks are becoming more and more prevalent, carriers and manufacturers are dedicating more resources toward keeping an eye on forums like these for any breadcrumbs leading back to the source. Unfortunately for this given leakster, the breadcrumbs were all there.

Within a few days, an internal Sprint team (which, we’re told, is known around the carrier as “Forensics”) had traced the employee back to his Florida store. One of Sprint’s internal security task force members was immediately flown from Kansas to Florida; the employee was pulled in, their posting habits literally laid all out on the table, and they were terminated on the spot.

We see leaks each and every day; they are, after all, the lifeblood of any good gadget blog. Just because they’re a regular occurrence, however, doesn’t mean that employers are going to let them slide. They’re well within their rights to let any red-handed info-leakers go — and if any NDAs are involved, there very well could be some litigation involved. If the breadcrumbs are there, they’ll find’em.

EVO 4G Screen Issues - Ungrounded Screen

This is to demonstrate the issue that the EVO 4G is encountering with surfaces that are not grounded, or do not have pass any type of electrical charge. This is a huge issue when attempting to use the phone in a car dock for navigation or other purposes.

The HTC Incredible on Verizon exhibits the same problem however, the Sprint HERO and Verizon Droid DO NOT.

HTC EVOTM 4G Breaks Sales Records for Sprint on Launch Day; America’s First 4G Phone is a Hit with Customers

Saturday, June 12, 2010

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –Friday, June 4, was an early morning for thousands of customers who lined up several hours before Sprint (NYSE: S) stores opened their doors in anticipation of the first day of sales for America’s first 3G/4G phone, HTC EVOTM 4G. Customers were anxious to get their hands on HTC EVO 4G providing record sales figures for Sprint stores around the country.

Friday sales of HTC EVO 4G marked the largest quantity of a single phone sold in one day ever for Sprint – the record was previously held by both Samsung InstinctTM and Palm PreTM. In addition, the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

“HTC EVO 4G is a clear winner for customers with the powerful combination of an amazing multimedia experience in 3G coverage areas that becomes even better in our growing number of 4G markets. It is terrific to see customers react so positively to this device and the innovative experience it brings to them,” said Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO.

The record pace of HTC EVO 4G sales led to temporary shortages of the device at some of the 22,000 sales locations across the United States, including Sprint retail stores, national retail partners including RadioShack, Best Buy and Walmart, and indirect dealers. Sprint and HTC are diligently working around the clock to increase inventory in all sales channels. Additional shipments are arriving in retail stores on a regular basis with many stores seeing daily deliveries.

“HTC EVO 4G has more than lived up to our expectations that it would be one of the most anticipated technology products of the year,” said Kevin Packingham, senior vice president – Product Development for Sprint. “We are working closely with our partners at HTC to increase the supply and get EVO 4G into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible.”

Sprint Offers Tips on Maximizing Battery Life on HTC EVO 4G

If you've taken the plunge and bought the HTC EVO 4G recently, Sprint offers these tips to maximize your battery life and have a pleasant experience with the world's first 4G Android smartphone.

1. Add widgets to your HTC Sense homescreen to control the radios (Bluetooth, WiFi, 4G)

2. Use the widgets to turn off select radios when not in use. If you're not using 4G, switch it off and fall back on 3G instead to gain better battery life.

3. Turn off network roaming. By default, roaming is turned on for the HTC EVO 4G out of the box, which means that the phone scans for the strongest CDMA/EV-DO signal. If you've got great Sprint coverage where you are and don't need to roam onto one of Sprint's partner carriers, turn off roaming so the phone doesn't need to constantly search for the best signal.

4. Turn on automatic brightness so the screen can adjust in light and dark environments rather than having brightness turned all the way up. Alternatively, you can also set the screen brightness lower by default.

5. Turn off live wallpapers--they're pretty, but they do use a little bit of extra processing power.

6. Carry an extra battery or plug into a car charger when you can.

Sprint says it overstated EVO launch day sales

Sprint Nextel Corp said on Tuesday it had inadvertently overstated the launch day sales of the much anticipated EVO 4G phone from HTC Corp, which is touted as a serious competitor to Apple's iPhone 4.

Sprint said on Tuesday the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on the launch day was in line with the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

"We originally reported that the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

"We inadvertently erred in the comparison," Sprint said in a statement on Tuesday.

BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk said he was cutting his estimate for EVO sales in the first weekend to 150,000 from his prior estimate of 250,000 to 300,000.

"Furthermore, our calls to 20 plus stores today indicate that the phone is in short supply, so we do not expect that number to rise significantly in the first week of sales," Piecyk said.

The No. 3 U.S. wireless service provider said it sold six times more EVO phones on the launch date than it did Instinct phones from Samsung Electronics.

Sprint is hoping EVO will help it stem customer losses and give it a head start in selling 4G services. Its biggest rival, Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc, plans to launch 4G services later this year.

Sprint CFO: HTC EVO can take on iPhone 4

NEW YORK--A senior Sprint Nextel executive is hopeful that the new HTC EVO 4G will entice Sprint customers to stick with the carrier instead of defecting to AT&T for the new iPhone 4 this summer.

At an investor conference here Wednesday, Robert Brust, Sprint's chief financial officer, warned that the summer is usually the time of year that Sprint and all other U.S. carriers except AT&T feel the sting from a new iPhone launch. For the past three years, Apple and AT&T have launched a new version of the iPhone in June and early July. And customers have left their service on other carriers and flocked to AT&T to get the new device.

Robert Brust, chief financial officer for Sprint Nextel
(Credit: Sprint Nextel)

"Every year all U.S. carriers, except AT&T, go through a little trauma called 'iPhone introduction,'" he said. "We have a little churn issue called 'People leaving to go to the iPhone.' As people's contracts expire they leave and go to AT&T for the iPhone."

But this year, Brust said he is hopeful that the company's first 4G phone, a Google Android device called HTC EVO 4G, will stem some of the losses.

"Our hope is that we won't lose as many customers this year as we have in the past," he said during an interview at the conference.

Brust went on to explain that AT&T's network problems and the new tiered pricing plan the carrier recently introduced for all smartphones and the iPad may give some potential iPhone customers pause. Sprint's CEO Dan Hesse has said the company has no plans to introduce a tiered data plan.

"AT&T has been getting a lot of flack for its network," he said. "People all over the country have been complaining about the service. And they've raised rates for some of their customers. I think they are under a lot of stress right now."

Meanwhile, Sprint has introduced aggressively priced smartphone bundles and it finally has a phone that can take on the iPhone. With its large high-resolution touch screen, 8-megapixel camera, and the ability to turn itself into a Wi-Fi hotspot, Sprint believes the EVO is a compelling competitor to the iPhone even for customers not living in the 4G territory. The Andrdoid-based EVO is also designed specifically for a super fast 4G network, which means applications and video viewing is much faster than on an iPhone when the EVO is used in a 4G network.

Sprint is using Clearwire's 4G wireless network, which it's still building across the country. Currently about 44 million people can access the 4G network. And by the end of the year, Clearwire and Sprint say they'll reach 120 million potential customers.

Sprint tried to stave off defections last June with the launch of the much-anticipated Palm Pre. While the Pre did well in the first days on the market, sales were not even close to iPhone sales. But Burst said the EVO is a much more compelling device than the Pre.

"The Pre was for people who didn't really want the iPhone," he said. "But the EVO is a phone that people can get instead of the iPhone. We were in the distance last year and now we're catching up."

During his presentation at the conference, Brust told analysts that first-day sales of the EVO were strong across the country and not just in 4G areas. He didn't provide specific sales numbers, but he also didn't discuss the company's admission on Tuesday that it overestimated the number of phones sold on Friday.

Initially, Sprint said on Monday that the EVO's first-day sales were three times higher than sales of the Samsung Instinct or Palm Pre on their first weekends. The company later revised that statement saying it had "inadvertently erred" and that the number of EVO sales was equal to the combined three-day sales of the Instinct and the Pre.

Sprint Goofs on HTC Evo 4G Debut Sales Figure

Following strong HTC Evo 4G sales, Sprint’s original comparison to Palm Pre sales were overly generous. In a revised statement, Sprint said Evo 4G launch day sales were nearly twice the Pre’s launch day sales. Which is to say, in the ballpark of 50,000 units.

Sprint is offering up some new math following its announcement that the launch of the HTC Evo 4G marked the largest quantity of a single phone that it has ever sold in one day.

The Evo 4G was a hit indeed, but Sprint updated its June 4 press statement to scratch the description that the Evo 4G’s first-day sales figures were “three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.” That, frankly, wasn’t the clearest gauge — was that each device’s three days on the market combined, or the weekend sales for each, combined?

For the record, Sprint reported selling 50,000 Palm Pre handsets over the device’s debut weekend in June 2009 — which was capped that Monday with Apple’s introduction of the iPhone 3G S.

Months after its initial introduction, Sprint launched the Evo 4G June 4, calling it the nation’s first 3G/4G phone. Through partner Clearwire, the Evo can run at 4G speeds, where coverage is available, and even create a 4G hotspot for up to eight other WiFi-capable devices. It boasts one of the market’s largest touch displays, at 4.3 inches, and runs Google’s Android operating system as well as HTC’s Sense user interface.

Other notable features include two cameras — a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calling and an 8-megapixel for killer pics and video. Its one shortfall is said to be its battery life — or lack thereof.

Still, both the HTC brand and the Android OS are riding high, and with the Evo 4G, Sprint appears to have the hit on its hands that it’s been hoping for.

“HTC Evo 4G has more than lived up to our expectations that it would be one of the most anticipated technology products of the year,” Kevin Packingham, a Sprint vice president, said in the updated June 7 statement. “We are working closely with our partners at HTC to increase the supply and get Evo 4G into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible.”

Sprint IPv6 Deployment Seamless for Businesses; Prepares Them for Continued Growth and Innovation

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --To ensure the future availability of new IP addresses for its customers, Sprint (NYSE: S) has completed the first phase of IPv6 deployment for large businesses and wholesale partners that use its domestic Internet backbone. Additional deployment phases will continue through 2010 and by the end of this year, Sprint plans to roll out IPv6 support to its remaining domestic sites and international Internet backbone, including points of presence in the Europe and Asia-Pacific regions. This will give Sprint global businesses and wholesale partners the benefits of IPv6 services on SprintLink Dedicated Internet Access service.

IP is the basis of all Internet communications, connecting billions of devices via unique addresses available through the current protocol, IPv4. However, the dramatic increase in the size of the Internet and in the number of devices accessing it is driving the need for many more IP addresses. Industry experts predict that the pool of available IPv4 addresses will be depleted over the next 12 to 18 months. IPv6 is the Internet community's solution for this issue, increasing the address space from 32 bits in IPv4 to 128 bits in IPv6. This allows for trillions of addresses, enough to accommodate the future needs of every person on the planet.

Sprint IPv6 deployment is a vital step which ensures smooth transition to the new protocol for customers whose critical content and applications rely on Sprint's converged IP backbone. To aid in that transition, Sprint is implementing IPv6 support using a native dual-stack solution, which allows IPv6 to coexist with customers' IPv4 network. This approach requires no changes to customers' network design, easing deployment, troubleshooting, and management of the new IPv6 protocol.

"IP is the glue that allows us to integrate services effectively between wired and wireless, mobile and fixed," said Iyad Tarazi, vice president of Network Development and Engineering, Sprint. "We want to make sure that Sprint's networks are ready to meet business and wholesale partner needs, and we believe that IPv6 capabilities will be crucial to keep the momentum of innovative new services flowing on the Internet as we approach IPv4 exhaustion."

The next phase will extend IPv6 support to Sprint's Global MPLS Layer 3 VPN network, currently planned for 2011, and finally to the wireless network, in early 2012. Sprint has offered IPv6 services on its Peerless IP network since 2007.

Sprint has been a pioneer in the IPv6 evolution, actively involved in the standardization, testing, and deployment of IPv6 since 1997. An early adopter of IPv6 in an experimental capacity, Sprint supports a test-bed network to gain experience with the protocol and to offer service to early adopters. The most up-to-date information about Sprint's ongoing IPv6 rollout is available at http://www.sprintv6.net.
