Nokia has remained tight-lipped on speculation that it will release a tablet to compete in the market opened up by the release of the iPad.
It refused to comment on remarks by Rodman Redshaw analyst Ashok Kumar, close to Nokia’s technology partners.
He said that Nokia was working with suppliers and design manufacturers on a touchscreen design to be ready as soon as this Autumn.
It would mean that Nokia would enter a tablet race created by Apple and which will soon have rival devices from the likes of HP, Microsoft and Dell.
He said to TheStreet: “Nokia hasn't fielded any breakaway products in years," says Kumar. "This is a new window, and Nokia had better be at the starting gate if and when the product category takes off."
To all extents and purposes, Nokia has been left behind in developing high-end smartphone devices comparable to the iPhone and HTC’s, replying on Symbian-based devices.
It has done a little bit better in the netbook market though with the release of the Nokia Booklet 3G. Also Nokia still dominates the mobile phone market in general, with a huge market share over the rest.
It still unclear whether ‘in-between’ products like the iPad, marketed as between a mobile and a netbook, will be seen as a fad or a trend will that will last.
It has its supporters though, such as Rupert Murdoch who sees devices like the iPad as the future.
