Handset solution vendors poised for strong sales on high demand in mature and emerging markets

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Global handset solution vendors are poised for strong sales in the second quarter as well as the second half of 2010 due to a surge of the replacement purchases of mid-range to high-end handsets (including smartphones) in mature markets and strong demand for entry-level models in emerging market, according to industry sources.

While US-based Qualcomm and Texas Instruments (TI) have both revised upward their guidance for first-quarter 2010, Taiwan-based MediaTek is also expected to see its first-quarter revenues surpass its original projections, the sources indicated.

MediaTek is estimated to have generated revenues of NT$12-13 billion in March and NT$33 billion in the first quarter of 2010, a 10% increase over the previous quarter and 3% higher than its target, estimated market sources.

MediaTek's quarterly figures hit a record high of NT$34.3 billion in third-quarter 2009, the sources noted.

Infineon Technologies, a chipset solution vendor for iPhones, is also expected to see its handset solution shipments increase substantially in the second quarter due to the planned launch of new iPhones, added the sources.
