Want A 3D Mobile Phone?

With Samsung and company outing 3D televisions for home viewers and China loving 3D newspapers, it’s not too farfetched to picture the technology being used in laptops and mobile phones. Focusing on the use of 3D in cellphones, Petr Kubik has designed this all-in-one-piece that includes the glasses, intuitive stylus and expandable screens. The 3D apps support 3D movies and camera plus allow you to make surreal calls with family and friends that pop outta the screen!

Here are some of the specs envisioned for the 3D Mobile Phone:

Flutter: applying a deflection in the middle of the display screen, reveals a debt parted like the design

Android Based Coffee Brewery

This thing makes coffee and spits out music. What more do you want? What more COULD you want? More? Alright well you’re in luck because this “Appresso” device does all that you want. It’s Android based. That means it’s amazing by itself. Then it makes coffee. Delicious coffee mmmm. It uses the Android technology to tell you info about the taste and scent of the coffee, then also reads QR-codes* from each coffee capsule, playing a specific song based on which pack you’ve scanned! My triple caffeinated cap plays Yanni in the morning.

*QR code is a gridlike system of black and white spaces, very often used in tangent with cellphone camera technology, very similar to a BAR code in most respects. Take a peek at the pictures below, you’ll know what you’re looking for right away.

Not only then can you read and play music from the packs (opening a whole new door for sound/taste collaboration), you can dock your own music player in the top as well. All of your little music devices, hooray.

Not for those who splash coffee all over the counter every morning.

LG Mobile Phones Announces Winners of 3rd Annual Design the Future Competition

$20,000 Winning Design Selected From More Than 400 Entries.

SAN DIEGO -- LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., Inc. (LG Mobile Phones) announced the winners of its 3rd Annual Design the Future Competition. The ideation competition challenged participants to create a mobile phone concept to define the future of mobile communication. By partnering with crowdSPRING, more than 400 designs were submitted during the six-week competition in a battle for more than $80,000 in awards. LG awarded $20,000 plus a Wacom Intuos4 medium tablet to the first place winner, $10,000 to second place, and $5,000 to third place. Each of the top three winners will also receive professional design and sketching software from sponsor Autodesk, Inc. LG also presented 37 honorable mentions with $1,000 each!

The first place winning entry was a team effort by Zack Filbert, Chris Carpenter, James Connors, and Kees Luyendijk, four second year industrial design students from the same design class in Virginia Tech. Together, they created the AL-i concept around the functionality of a smartphone for one-handed use. The winning concept showcased detailed, innovative examples of form and interface scenarios for one-handed usage inspired by their own research. These four students will receive $20,000 plus Autodesk Alias Sketch software, the newest application from Autodesk for exploring concepts and producing stunning artwork.

The second place winning entry – titled Premium – is a mobile phone with 3D interface that connects the phone and the car together to adjust in-car climate, control the infotainment system, select seat memory, check tire pressure, gauge the fuel amount, etc. It should come as no surprise that the winner, Nouphone Bansasine, is a professional car designer.

This year's competition marked the first-ever Prop Mater's Choice Award which was given to Dua Xiong for his cutting-edge design titled the Flutter. A smartphone that fans open to reveal a beautiful flexible OLED touch screen that scrolls radially, the Flutter has won the opportunity to be featured in future blockbuster film.

Participants submitted a wide range of ideas including accessories and concepts for the disabled. For example, an honorable mention – titled Atlas – is a smartphone that docks into a base which projected the pages, so you can view multiple applications simultaneously. The dock features a tracking system which senses your hand gestures, so you can spin the pages in a loop and zoom in and out. Another honourable mention – titled Surface – is a watch phone for the blind and features a Braille keypad and a unique shape, so you can distinguish orientation of the phone by feel.

"We continue to be impressed with the imagination of the participants," said Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of marketing and innovation for LG Mobile Phones. "Although we listen to our consumers daily, LG's Design the Future Competition invites a different type of conversation."

"We are extremely pleased to partner with LG on this innovative project," said Ross Kimbarovsky, co-founder of crowdSPRING. "We see great potential for the future of this program and tapping into the best talent out there for affordable logos, web designs and writing services."

Judges in this year's competition included 2009 Design the Future Competition participant, Gwen Frederick. Impressed with her talent and creative promise, LG hired Frederick as a full time employee after seeing her innovative design. This year's competition also attracted a record number of submissions from design enthusiasts. Entries were judged on three criteria: creativity/originality, need fulfillment, and feasibility. Any U.S. resident over the age of 18 years (or age of majority in state of residence) and older was eligible to submit a concept. Both seasoned and aspiring designers used their imagination, creativity and 2D and 3D engineering software such as the free trial of Autodesk SketchBook Pro to develop their designs. Ideas were accepted from March 15 to April 26, 2010 and were submitted online through crowdSPRING.

Design by Community – creating the ultimate concept device

Design by Community is capturing the collective thoughts of Conversations readers to define the ultimate concept mobile device. To avoid creating some kind of unwieldy beast, we’ve created a series of steps and every week, we’ll put new variables to the public vote. Once the product specs have been defined, we’ll get Nokia’s design team to turn them into a series of concept sketches which you can vote for. The winner will be turned into a design concept render and revealed exclusively on Conversations in May.

Sliding iPhone Concept Packs a Keyboard, Looks Neat

Olivier Demangel is a 3D artist from the UK and you absolutely have to check out his work. Aside from the beautiful iPhone concept pictured below, the man also created the Nintendo 3DS, a possible follow-up to the current portable console. However, the gaming iPhone design steals the show, through its cool looks.

This futuristic iPhone features a small sliding QWERTY keyboard, plus an iPod-like scroll wheel and it still manages to keep that cool touchscreen. We have no info on the specs of this device, but in case you’re wondering, you can check out the Nintendo 3DS concept at the end of the article, since it’s pictured there, in all its splendour.

Let’s just hope that Apple, Nintendo or maybe a third party will adopt these designs…

Messenger Dog

Messenger dog is an informal messaging system for disastered cities.

Soon after a disaster happens, such as an hearthquake, family members and beloved ones could get displaced in the city and in different refugees camps, being not able either to reconnect physically due to the collapsed roads or to phone each other due to the network not working.

In those very first hours of fear and displacement, people may just want to send a message to their beloved ones only saying that they are alive and safe, hoping the same for them as well.

Messanger Dogs can help in recording those messages as video message and delivering them to the refugee camp they are assigned to.

Messanger Dogs wear a particular uniform to identify them, equipped with a device that can record messages, store geolocation of where each message was taken and the time as well. Messanger dogs are trained to sit when in front of a person, so as soon as one of them meets a person, it sits, allowing the accelerometer inside the recording device to trigger the interface software to start. In our prototype we used an IPod running Nada Mobile from Tellart to simulate the device.

The Messanger Dogs are divided into team, assigned to different refugee camp. At the end of their work, they can come back to the camp, where volunteers will download the video and make them available to the people to browse among and watch. In this way people could get to know a familiar is fine before the formal communication would be restored.

This concept was developed by me, Mary and Li during Matt Cottam GUI course at CIID.
The video for this project was developed during Timo Arnall, Jack Schulze and Matt Cottam workshop called "very Short Stories" soon after the concept and graphical interfaces development during a very intense weekend.

Morph is a concept demonstrating some of the possibilities nanotechnologies might enable in future communication devices. Morph can sense its environment, is energy harvesting and self cleaning .
Morph is a flexible two-piece device that can adapt its shape to different use modes. Nanotechnology enables to have adaptive materials yet rigid forms on demand.
It is also featured in the MoMA online exhibition "Design and the Elastic Mind". It has been a collaboration project of Nokia Research Center and Cambridge Nanoscience Center.

Remade concept

Nokia has released a short video showing a new concept from our design team exploring how recycled materials could be used to make mobiles in the future.
The idea behind the "remade" concept was to see if it was possible to create a device made from nothing new. It has been designed using recycled materials that avoid the need for natural resources, reduce landfill, and allow for more energy efficient production.
It is made out of metals from upcycled aluminum cans, plastics from drink bottles form the chassis, and its rubber key mats are provided by old car tyres. Inside the phone are new more environmentally friendly technologies such as printed electronics, and the graphics used on the displa y save energy without compromising on style.
Remade is a concept that explores potential new ideas for the future, and is part of Nokia's ongoing work looking at how it can help people make more sustainable choices. It is designed to help inspire and stimulate discussion on how mobile devices might be made in the future.

Mobiado CPT001: the concept of cell phone… from the marble

It preferred thus far to not be extended on the characteristics of the apparatus Of mobiado: this can be common for contemporary cell phones functionality. “The raisin” Of mobiado CPT001 - design and materials is, and, selected the very uncommon solution even taking into account the fact that in the segment of the telephones of the class of luxes by something to astonish is already very complicated.

The housing Of mobiado CPT001 must be made… from the one-piece piece of marble, and sensory screen is covered with sapphire glass. Judging by the represented image, in marble telephone they will be uneven of edge, which will create the effect of natural marble chunk. True, there remains only surmise, how much will weigh this device. Designations it is planned to apply with gold, and under the display to place clockwork. Thus far nothing it communicates about the plans with respect to the release of this solution for the market, but it is not difficult to surmise, that it will be far from cheap.

Nokia X9 concept, the cell as it would like

he Nokia X9 exists only in my imagination and talent @ kalevgr. It all started 2 years ago in Barcelona, in a coach with bloggers who were invited to Nokia. Then we discussed the Nokia N99, a fantastic cell phone we would like to see the giant Finn. At that time the N96 was presented but many dreams were left on the shelf.

The Nokia X9 is a concept, based X6, but on steroids. The main features are a large capacitive display, camera can record video and HD 720p after quad LED Xeon module requires a lot of space to get into a delicate mobile. Support for memory cards microSD, mini HDMI output for connection to a TV. All known and technologically feasible right now.

The differences begin with the integration of dual micro USB on the X9. In this way the cell can function as a USB hub for various devices but also as a charger, a feature especially useful after the adoption of a standard mini USB for charging of smartphones.

Unfortunately, the batteries are left behind in development and large screens consume much energy but need 24 / 7 internet connection is necessary. For that integrates Nokia X9 AMOLED screen just below the large multi touch screen. Consider an Optimus Maximus keyboard minified to serve the basic needs for informing the user without having to check the display constantly. The surface can be configured for notification of new messages from Facebook, DM on Twitter, SMS, missed calls, etc.

In the middle is the key, touch sensitive home button with multiple functions. Single touch for transfer to the home screen. Single touch and wipe down to unlock the device. Single touch and wipe up for instant control of social status on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, etc. without having to operate the mobile screen, without additional energy consumption. Practically, the user need not deal with the mobile phone because the cause to be alert to what happens (push notifications) but gives the possibility to check on demand. When the user decides to see what happens in Facebook, Twitter and your inbox operating undertakes to show the avatar of the contact list and do assign to each of these respective event. The AMOLED screen automatically updates via the news ticker on major event Foursquare eg if a friend is nearby.

Because we are in 2010, the music can be stream and share. Nokia is already using FM transmitters for this purpose but can go one step further and allow OTA (Over The Air) sharing a playlist or the entire album with the requirement that those who will receive the album will pay at a discount say 10%. The Finns have already shown such a technology on an experimental level with the Nokia Explore and Share Technology Concept.

Sony-Ericsson 3G creates synergy between humans and technology

Creating synergy between human beings and communication technology, Singapore-based designer Sonny Lim has devised a cellphone concept dubbed “Sony-Ericsson 3G” that allows communication in a more natural manner. The 3G concept phone features large touchscreen wherein text and numbers are drawn with your thumb on a nine-dot matrix, which resembles children’s finger-painting. The idea is easy as it is visual and resembles natural writing. Moreover, drawing a character is faster and more natural than searching for the letter on a small keypad. This visual writing principle could also be applied to non-Western alphabets, which could be a major advantage for non-English users.
