Telstra and Nokia Siemens Networks LTE world-first trial achieves 100Mbps at 75km using 2.6GHz

Sunday, June 20, 2010

Telstra and Nokia Siemens Networks LTE world-first trial achieves 100Mbps at 75km using 2.6GHz.

Telstra and Nokia Siemens Networks have conducted groundbreaking trials of next generation mobile technology in Australia, successfully achieving peak speeds of 100Mbps download and 31Mbps upload over a record-breaking distance of 75 kilometres in regional Victoria.

“The two companies are testing the application of LTE technology in regional areas through a combination of laboratory and long range field testing to determine the limitations that physical distance imposes on the LTE customer experience.”

Michael Rocca, chief operations officer, said the range testing is of critical importance for the future of this technology in regional Australia and Telstra’s learnings will be of great interest internationally.

“Australia has the sixth largest landmass with the ninth lowest population density in the world so any technology we introduce has to travel long distances, cover large areas and still perform to the levels Telstra customers have come to enjoy.”

“Telstra’s Next G™ network does this extremely well today and we want to ensure that when we bring LTE technology to Australian consumers, our customer experience remains one of the best in the world,” Mr Rocca said.

The extended range field trial was conducted between Mount Hope and Mount Burrumboot in central Victoria by engineers from Telstra and Nokia Siemens Networks. The trial used Nokia Siemens Networks’ commercially-available LTE-ready Flexi Multiradio Base Station and Evolved Packet Core (EPC), with pre-commercial LTE USB dongles from third-party vendors.

Kalevi Kostiainen, head of Nokia Siemens Networks, Australia and New Zealand said, “The outstanding results of this trial were made possible through close collaboration between Telstra and Nokia Siemens Networks. The benefits of LTE in urban environments are currently being deployed globally, having already been extensively tested and the business benefits well understood. Through this unique joint trial we can now see how LTE can be extended to provide cost effective solutions for rural and remote environments.”

"Nokia Siemens Networks is a leader in the development and deployment of LTE/SAE technology and this demonstration of capacity and capability with Telstra further reinforces our leadership position,” Mr Kostiainen added.

Next generation combined packet data switch and optical platform unveiled

Nokia Siemens Networks simplifies network infrastructure, cuts cost by integrating packet data handling into optical transport platform.

Nokia Siemens Networks unveiled a new platform that simplifies large communications networks while addressing rising demand for more capacity. The next generation packet optical transport solution (P-OTS) combines the intelligence needed to reliably send information where it’s needed with the huge scale and speed of optical fiber communications. This industry first brings closer a truly converged packet and optical network.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ next generation P-OTS has been created by adding packet data handling functionality to the company’s hiT 7300 Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) platform. The result is that traffic can move more efficiently through an operator’s network, rather than needing to be processed by routers at each stage. This allows the network operator to address rising demand for bandwidth intensive applications without having to undertake massive data traffic router capacity expansion. In return valuable router resources can be dedicated to process higher level, value added services.

The next generation P-OTS is achieved through the integration of Multilayer Protocol Label Switching – Transport Profile (MPLS-TP) functionality and protocol agnostic switching that allows the hiT 7300 DWDM platform to handle both packet and circuit-switched traffic with the same efficiency. It combines the scalability of photonic switching with the flexibility of electrical switching capacity from 1.5Tbps (Tera bit per second) to 24Tbps. In addition, the integrated Optical Data Unit (ODU) cross-connect functionality aggregates low speed traffic and efficiently fills high capacity transport channels which means the installed optical network can handle more traffic.

“With internet traffic growing fast and average revenues per subscriber declining, cost per bit is the most pressing issue for service providers,” said Uwe Fischer, head of Optical Networks Product Management at Nokia Siemens Networks. “This combination of MPLS-TP and optical technology allows the most cost efficient transport of data traffic over a DWDM optical transport network. We allow service providers to implement a flexible transport architecture with the agility and scalability necessary to meet the dynamic requirements of their subscribers.”

The benefits of the next generation P-OTS can be maximized with Nokia Siemens Networks’ TransNet network planning tool and managed via the company’s system-wide NetAct network management system. The next generation P-OTS can be deployed by both operators using Nokia Siemens Networks’ existing hiT 7300 platform as well as those building a new optical transport network.

Elisa customers first to enjoy more flexible mobile broadband

Nokia Siemens Networks applies Quality of Service differentiation for Finnish operator.

Elisa has activated new network features from Nokia Siemens Networks that provide flexible Quality of Service (QoS). This is the first commercial deployment of Nokia Siemens Networks QoS differentiation solution built by integrating multiple network elements, including its radio network and network management system. Elisa is using the QoS differentiation to prioritize time and resource critical traffic to ensure customers receive the service they have paid for even when networks are congested.

“The increased uptake of dongles has resulted in a significant increase in mobile broadband traffic at certain times,” said Timo Sippola, head of Mobile Network Planning, Elisa. "Just like our roads, networks have rush-hours and quiet periods. To improve the experience for the users on our network it is important to be able to maintain the service level they paid for."

The Quality of Service differentiation solution takes effect in heavily loaded networks when requests to use the network can exceed its capacity. It enables the prioritization of data traffic, according to policies determined by subscription agreements, to fairly divide the available resources. Different priorities can be allocated to different user segments or applications and can be applied dynamically depending on the network load. Nokia Siemens Networks QoS aware scheduler also enables Elisa to change QoS priorities even during a data session and maintain a particular bit rate in simultaneous upload and download sessions.

“In short, Elisa will be able to manage its network traffic and utilize its network investments better while providing better services to its customers,” said Tommi Uitto, head of Product Management, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Quality of Service differentiation does not replace the need for having good mobile broadband capacity and coverage, but it further helps maintain high network efficiency and reduces the need for over investing in a network*”

Nokia Siemens Networks first to publish wireless access network energy efficiency using new industry standards

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Nokia Siemens Networks first to publish wireless access network energy efficiency using new industry standards.

The energy efficiency of Nokia Siemens Networks’ award-winning* Flexi EDGE Base Station is the first to be provided in accordance with new technical specifications published by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). ETSI published a standard method to analyze the energy efficiency of wireless access network equipment to make it easier to compare network performance from different vendors with the goal of reducing operator energy use.

The measured power consumption of the Flexi EDGE Base Station in a typical configuration, with three sectors and four carriers per sector, averages 978 watts in a basic mode of operation. With software energy saving features, high performance can be maintained but power consumption can be reduced to 833 watts. In some instances this can be further reduced to 562 watts with a reduced configuration of two, instead of four, carriers per sector.

“Nokia Siemens Networks is the first company to report wireless access network energy efficiency according to the ETSI specification, setting a target for the whole industry,” said Prashant Agnihotri, head of GSM/EDGE Product Management, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Without the standard it is impossible to compare product performance and energy efficiency improvements from different companies. This will help us take our discussions with customers to a more concrete level comparing how much power our products consume.”

Energy efficiency is critical as around 90 percent of the energy consumption of a cellular network comes from base stations.

Energy Efficiency of Wireless Access Network Equipment was published by ETSI as a method to evaluate the energy efficiency of wireless access networks. A key aim of this technical specification was to define reference base station configurations and load levels so that everyone in the industry can measure base station power consumption in a similar way. The specification takes into account different measurement conditions such as temperature, pressure and humidity. It can be found online here.
