News tonight comes for all the HTC Magic owners out there as the same issue is happening on their device. Here is the text message owners are getting. We are waiting for official word from Rogers to see if the Magic is also being pulled from their inventory… as it stands right now it’s not listed on their website for sale. It will be interesting to see how this will effect the recent decision for Dream owners to upgrade to a Magic.
“Rogers/Fido service message: URGENT 911 Calls: Please disable GPS location on your HTC Magic device to ensure all 911 calls complete. HTC is urgently working on a software upgrade and we will provide details shortly so you can re-enable GPS. Instructions: Select Menu – Select Location – Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite”
Update #1: Rogers has now issued a statement regarding the issue:
“We are in the process of contacting all of our Magic customers by text message asking them to disable GPS location on their Rogers HTC Magic device to ensure all 911 calls complete.
The same issue was identified on the Rogers HTC Dream, as communicated on January 15. At the time, our testing indicated that the Rogers HTC Magic was not impacted. However, through continued precautionary testing of the devices, we discovered the issue is replicated intermittently on the Magic device as well. HTC is working on a software fix that we will make available as soon as possible.
In the meantime, Rogers HTC Dream customers need to follow these steps:
1) Select Menu
2) Select Settings
3) Select Location
4) Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite
We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused our customers. Our priority continues to be customer safety. As with the Dream, we are contacting via text all affected customers and we have immediately requested that the device be taken off the shelf until HTC implements its upgrade”
UPDATE #2 – For all the Dream owners looking to upgrade their device … we’ve been informed by Rogers that the recent “Dream to Magic upgrade program is temporarily on hold”. No other details of when/if the promo will be offered up again… probably when the software fix has been completed or when OS 2.1 is out.
