Taiwan market: FET to not offer WiMAX voice services

Saturday, January 30, 2010

Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET), which started its WiMAX operations in Taichung, central Taiwan at the end of 2009, has stressed that it will not provide voice communication services based on WiMAX to avoid negative impact on its 2G and 3G voice services.

Instead, FET is focusing on household applications and broadband access services over its WiMAX networks, using dongles, network cards and WiMAX-enabled netbooks and notebooks as main CPE products, the company said.

FET expects the number of its WiMAX home users in Taichung city to rise to 20,000-30,000 by the end of 2010, accounting for 10% of the household broadband market in the city, the company stated.
