KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — In celebration of Earth Day, hundreds of U.S. Cellular associates nationwide are participating in volunteer projects with nonprofit organizations and schools to help make their communities a little “greener.”
Locally, U.S. Cellular associates spent several hours at the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center sprucing up the organization’s grounds and facilities on Friday, April 23.
“We appreciate these U.S. Cellular associates helping to beautify our grounds and refresh our facilities after a long winter,” said Danielle Kriger, for YWCA Knoxville. “This Earth Day project is a wonderful volunteer activity, and it sets a good example for everyone to help take care of our community and our environment.”
The YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center serves East Knoxville as a community center. It provides a free After-School Enrichment Program for at-risk children, offering them tutoring, mentoring, sports and artistic opportunities, nutritional education and much more. The center’s Summer Day Camp is a tradition in many families, and community seniors gather at the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center weekly for lunch, exercise, education and socialization.
Local U.S. Cellular associates who volunteered at the center worked on projects such as painting the building inside and outside, mulching the playground area, garden maintenance, pressure washing and minor fix-up work around the facilities.
Nationwide, U.S. Cellular associates regularly participate in volunteer activities. Last year, they surpassed a company-wide challenge donating more than 30,000 hours in their communities.
“We love to get out in our communities,” said Jack Brundige, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Tennessee. “We really enjoy working with the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center, and volunteering our time in celebration of Earth Day makes it even more meaningful.”

The company’s industry-leading program Battery Swap allows customers to swap out their dead or dying battery for a fully-charged one at no cost. Since the program launched, more than 1 million batteries have been swapped out, keeping many from going to landfills.
