Meet Us at the Fair: Motorola Communications Expertise, Networks and Devices Keep People Connected, Entertained and Secure at World Expo 2010 Shanghai

Pioneering TD-LTE network to provide indoor coverage for pavilions; hundreds of Motorola devices to support seminal event.

BEIJING – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), a global leader in mobile communications, announced a series of company-wide initiatives for the U.S. Pavilion as part of Motorola’s support of World Expo 2010 Shanghai China. Motorola is working with organizers of the Expo and the U.S. Pavilion to provide communications infrastructure for the event, which is expected to draw up to 70 million visitors from across China and around the world between May 1 and October 31, 2010.

Motorola products and services being used to support this six-month event span the company’s portfolio. These include award-winning Android devices such as the BACKFLIP™, two-way radios, TETRA systems, digital enterprise assistants, Wireless LAN equipments and the world’s first TD-LTE showcase network.

TD-LTE Network & Devices and Wireless LAN
Motorola will provide indoor TD-LTE network coverage for the U.S. Pavilion for the duration of the Expo.

“Today’s announcement underscores the pioneering efforts of China Mobile and Motorola to bring mobile communications to the world’s largest mobile market and to the world,” said Dr. Mohammad Akhtar, corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola Networks business in Asia Pacific. “Motorola’s launch of this network is yet another demonstration of our commitment to the next generation of TD-LTE operators and networks in China and worldwide.”

Announced in November of last year, Motorola was selected as main equipment supplier to provide indoor TD-LTE coverage for pavilions at the Expo. Helping operators build a healthy TD-LTE ecosystem, Motorola will also integrate and launch the world’s first TD-LTE USB dongle at the event.

Motorola will provide an end-to-end TD-LTE solution that includes its award-winning evolved packet core and radio access network as well as user equipment. This solution leverages Motorola’s experience and expertise with commercial orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) networks with professional services to deploy, maintain and optimize these leading-edge networks.

In addition, Motorola will provide wireless local area network (WLAN) coverage – with AP300 and AP7131 access points – to provide high-speed and secure Internet access for the US Pavilion staff. With Motorola’s advanced WLAN infrastructure, staff can easily access the Internet, the Pavilion’s internal network, virtual private network (VPN) connections and multimedia applications at speeds comparable to wired broadband lines.

TETRA Systems and Subscriber Radios for Public Security and Transportation
Motorola’s support of the Expo also encompasses the mission-critical communications infrastructure necessary to make an event of this scale run smoothly, including six TETRA systems and more than 50,000 subscriber radios:

* The support of voice dispatch and command as well as communications functions for the Shanghai municipal Government Radio Network. Motorola has provided an 800MHz TETRA digital communications trunking system, capable of providing powerful functions including group calling, broadcast and emergency calls, integrated mobile packet data service, short messages, and core mobile phone capabilities.
* Making travelling to and from the Expo a delight for visitors and staff alike. Motorola has delivered 800MHz TETRA digital communications trunking systems to all lines of Shanghai Metro, helping the city’s rapid transit system’s smooth operation through network dispatch, traffic management, safety and disaster preparedness.
* Both of the Shanghai International Airports, Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and Shanghai Hong Qiao and all Shanghai Ports are also using 800MHz TETRA digital trunking systems and thousands of advanced MTP850 TETRA subscriber radios to keep visitors, their bags and the logistics for exhibits bound for the Expo moving swiftly and smoothly.
* Ensuring the safety and security of everyone at the fair. The Shanghai police and fire departments are building on the 800MHz TETRA digital trunking system already operated by the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau, adding a 350MHz TETRA digital trunking system with terminals for the Public Security Bureau and another 350MHz TETRA digital trunking system for the Shanghai Armed Police, which includes the city’s fire departments.

As the global TETRA leader, Motorola has extensive experience in providing mission-critical communications solutions, including government radio networks, to support large-scale events globally and in Asia Pacific. In China, Motorola has contributing to the country's development in public services for more than 20 years, particularly in public safety and transportation. It has a strong track record in its solutions being used to support large-scale events, such as the 11th National Games in the city of Jinan in 2008.

“Shanghai Expo 2010 marks a milestone in China’s emergence as a leader in the world’s family of nations and cultures,” said Rueybin Kao, chairman of Motorola China. “We are grateful to Shanghai’s people and leaders, and to our partners at China Mobile, for making Motorola such an important part the effort and our networks a symbol of their hospitality.’

Two-Way Radios and Enterprise Digital Assistant for Major Expo Venues
In addition to the U.S. Pavilion’s network, visitors to the Expo will see Motorola throughout the event. Motorola two-way radios will be used by U.S. pavilion staff for coordination and security, and the teams operating several of the Expo’s major venues – including the Expo Village, Expo Axis, the China Pavilion and the Performing Arts Center – will be using either Motorola analog conventional two-way radios, or Motorola’s industry-leading MOTOTRBO digital two-way radio system. In the mean time, Motorola will cooperate with Chindex (Nasdaq:CHDX) and its United Family Healthcare (UFH) division to deploy the Motorola Enterprise Digital Assistant (EDA) MC55 healthcare mobility solution and other relevant solutions within the UFH aid stations at the United States, French, and Chinese Private Enterprise Pavilions.

“At this year’s Expo, Shanghai will be hosting the world in a celebration of possibilities for humankind in the 21st century,” said Rueybin Kao, chairman of Motorola China. “Superb communications are essential for an event of this scale, lying at the heart of what brings people around the world together. We believe it is essential for Motorola to contribute our expertise to help make the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China a success.”

Don’t let your Android Apps become Power-Hogs – we show you how

By holding wakelocks and hardware resources, application developers can affect the power consumption. Poor implementation will reduce the standby time of mobile handsets.

Users are sensitive to the standby time of their phone and usually think of battery and hardware problems, rather than considering that one or more applications could be the cause of poor performance.

Sony Ericsson's development team has gathered some basic application coding guidelines that will improve your applications power management.
