Taiwan operators testing US$100 WiMAX handset

Monday, May 17, 2010

Taiwan operators have begun testing a WiMAX handset with an expected free on board price of US$100 , according to industry sources. The handset, produced by Israel-based Comsys Mobile, supports WiMAX, Wi-Fi and GSM, and is scheduled for launch as early as the fourth quarter of 2010.

Most of the WiMAX handsets unveiled for Taiwan by HTC and MediaTek were quoted at about US$600. With WiMAX coverage still limited, operators believe prices must come down for consumers to accept WiMAX handsets. Comsys' new device, which is said to have received orders for more than 200,000 units worldwide, could be the type of product to jump start Taiwan's 4G mobile communications market.

Thus far, Taiwan's WiMAX operators are focused on Dongles, IAD (integrated access devices), routers and notebooks. The first WiMAX phone is expected to hit the market in the third quarter, sources said.

Sitronix declines to comment on reported handset driver IC orders

Small-size LCD driver IC supplier Sitronix Technology has declined to comment on a recent Chinese-language Commercial Times report indicating it has landed orders from Samsung Electronics for handset-use driver IC citing customer confidentiality, according to a company filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE).

According to the Commercial Times, Sitronix began shipping handset-use LCD driver ICs in small volume to Samsung in February. Its shipments to Samsung will grow substantially at the end of the second quarter. Sitronix is expected to enjoy a revenue growth sequentially in the second quarter.

Sitronix has reported revenues of NT$472 million (US$14.8 million) for April, the highest since August 2009. Revenues for the first fourth months of 2010 totaled NT$1.78 billion, a 34.3% rise from a year earlier.

Naming the baby final vote – Design by Community

LONDON, England – This is it folks, the final stage of voting for naming the baby. Last week you helped whittle down the list of 148 names to just 15 top contenders. Now we present them here for you to vote for your favourite. The winner will walk away with a whole load of kudos and a new pair of headphones. So you can make the best choice, we’ve outlined what the meaning is behind each of the 15 suggested names. Read on after the jump to see the reasons and choose your favourite.

Naming a device is no easy feat. Made even harder when the device is just a concept and the name must be decided by the community. But name it we must and with your help we’re confident the best one will be chosen. We’ve outlined the shortlisted names and reasons below, and once you’ve had a chance to browse through, hit up the poll at the bottom to lay down your vote. Remember though, you must choose your favourite only and we’ll be keeping the results hidden until we reveal them in the Nokia Conversations newsletter on Friday (they’ll be announced on the site later this Friday afternoon).

Interestingly, we have two suggestions for a similar name. Nokia U was voted to the top on two occasions, as both Nokia U and Nokia U series, and as such you can now choose which reason you prefer.

Nokia Aurora – a device that people have been dreaming from nokia and now it’s coming and sky is the limit for the success of this device

Nokia Alpha – since it is the first phone having its design and features designated by THE “community” (more of the end customer). Secondly it shall be the first phone with what people wants that is: superb graphics, exquisite material, outstanding phone software, outstanding performance
last but not least AN AFFORDABLE PRICE (which may be thought as an utopia as we cant’ have the bread, the money for the bread and the baker’s daughter )) )

Nokia Ace - the best device and services!

Nokia Fusion – I suggest this name in particular because it somehow evolve and conceptualised the ideas, technology and innovations which Nokia are capable and known for which can surpass time and even imagination…

Nokia eVo – sounds better and epitomises evolution… isn’t that what this experiment is all about?

Nokia Inspire – A device inspired and formed by the community

Nokia Nova – Bright exploding star, the word nova in Slovene also means “Nokia Nova – Bright exploding star, the word nova in Slovene also means “new”.

Nokia Link – link to the world

Nokia Magnum – This phone is supposed to be Nokia’s best phone in the future, so I think this name is suitable.

Nokia Sense - if it’s GPS and shake/motion focused

Nokia U – U is a letter that exists in many languages alike. As far as I know and researched, its pronunciation is also same or close in different languages. It’s either pronounced as “you” or “oo” in the word “moon” or “soon”. (I know English, Turkish, German, Spanish and Japanese and to validate this)

Nokia U Series – Series U For Ultimate Jajaja I Think Nokia U Terminator – And once the device actually makes it into production, resistance will be futile!

Nokia Soul ( as the device is for new souls designed for people)

Nokia Unity – designed by the community, for the community”

Nokia V7 – (seven is a nice number, quite high class, with a scale from 0 to 9, if I base Nokia used for C3, C5, E6). Vanguard suggest innovation in technology.

MyDailyApp – SMS Threader, Symabook and T-Reminder

GLOBAL - Spring cleaning is the order of the day from the folks over at MyDailyApp this week. You’ve cleared the cupboards, swapped the duffel coats for the board shorts, dusted the top of the picture frames and now it’s time for your phone to get the same treatment.

This week’s trio of apps primed to get your phone ship shape come in the form of SMS Threader, Symabook and T-Reminder. Read on after the jump to find how a few apps can get your phone working for you.

Kicking off the fix up we have SMS Threader. As the name implies, this app’s job is to organise messages into threads. Think of it as a handy digital postman delivering each message in the order you received them and grouping them according to who sent them. Handy if you send oodles of text messages and you need to track down the address you arranged to meet at in a hurry. Pick and choose how often you’d like SMS Threader to group your messages, how you’d like your messages tagged and if you’d like your threads graphically separated. By all accounts it shaves minutes off checking your latest textual happenings.

SMS Threader is available in Ovi Store for £4.00 and is compatible for S60 3rd edition devices.

Next up in our time-is-money selection we have Symabook, that promises to make keeping in touch with your friends a cinch. Brought to us by the Finish-based company Symartic, Symabook gives Facebook on your phone a facelift. It has all the functionality we’re used to on the desktop experience but brings it to your phone in a pretty neat way. Access every status update, picture upload and hilarious wall post with a single touch. Just log in once and the app syncs to your Facebook account before you’re ready to roll. Watch the video from the developers to see the app in action.

Symabook is available for £4.00 in Ovi Store and it works on a broad range of Nokia S60 3rd edition and S60 5th edition devices and in many different languages.

Third and finally we have T-Reminder. Think of this as your personal butler. It’s a super handy app that works as a reminder or alerting tool. You can use T-Reminder to alert when you have missed calls, messages or emails- and friendly cartoon-style graphics will pop up on your homescreen to give you a nudge. Another useful feature within the app is the scheduling tool. Configure the times during the day when the app will be in operation, so it switches on when you clock in and switches off when your working day is done.

According to the developer, T-Reminder is compatible with a broad range of Nokia S60 3rd edition and S60 5th edition devices. T-Reminder is available in Ovi Store for £4.00 but if you fancy a trial before you buy, nab the T-Reminder Lite 14-day trial for free.

Free Office Mobile 2010 for Windows Phones

Sunday, May 16, 2010

Today not only marks the availability of Office 2010 for organizations, but also the immediate availability of Office Mobile 2010 for all Windows Mobile 6.5 based phones with an earlier version of Office Mobile FOR FREE! via Windows Phone Marketplace. Office Mobile 2010 for Windows Mobile 6.5 includes new mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace. These new mobile versions offer a more touch-friendly layout and greater ability to work with documents on the phone – like editing PowerPoint presentations.

Personally my favorite new feature is the SharePoint and Windows Phone integration. With SharePoint Workspace Mobile 2010 and PowerPoint Mobile 2010 I can access, edit and save changes to a presentation, all while offline, and know the changes will update back to the server. For example, I have access to links and documents from my SharePoint sites and I can select a PowerPoint presentation to view offline on my phone. I can then make quick text edits and be ready to present no matter where I am. Finally, thanks to SharePoint Workspace Mobile when I save the changes these get updated back into the SharePoint server so everybody has access to the latest version of the document.

In addition making Office Mobile 2010 available for download today, we’re also demonstrating some of the next generation capabilities of Office Mobile for Windows Phone 7. Check out this demo of PowerPoint Streaming for Windows Phone 7 that was shown today in New York at the Office 2010 Launch: www.the2010event.com.
