Taiwan operators testing US$100 WiMAX handset

Monday, May 17, 2010

Taiwan operators have begun testing a WiMAX handset with an expected free on board price of US$100 , according to industry sources. The handset, produced by Israel-based Comsys Mobile, supports WiMAX, Wi-Fi and GSM, and is scheduled for launch as early as the fourth quarter of 2010.

Most of the WiMAX handsets unveiled for Taiwan by HTC and MediaTek were quoted at about US$600. With WiMAX coverage still limited, operators believe prices must come down for consumers to accept WiMAX handsets. Comsys' new device, which is said to have received orders for more than 200,000 units worldwide, could be the type of product to jump start Taiwan's 4G mobile communications market.

Thus far, Taiwan's WiMAX operators are focused on Dongles, IAD (integrated access devices), routers and notebooks. The first WiMAX phone is expected to hit the market in the third quarter, sources said.
