Layar revolutionizes Mobile Content Discovery with new Stream Technology powered browser

Amsterdam. Layar introduces a new way to browse with the latest Layar Reality Browser (version 3.5). The rapid growth of content within Layar increases the need for real time location based search. With the new version of the browser users can now easily discover and experience Augmented Reality without the need to enter a search query or open a specific layer. Users will immediately see the most interesting content nearby whenever they open the Layar Reality Browser, taking Augmented Reality from novelty to utility.

Layar’s Reality Browser revolutionizes mobile content discovery, by simply presenting the most interesting mobile content based on a user’s location & preferences. When launching the Layar Reality Browser users will be presented with a dynamic list of the most interesting content at their location. The list is sorted by time, location, proximity, popularity and preferences. The benefit of a list is that discovery is now possible without the need to hold the device up. It lowers the threshold to find interesting content, encouraging daily use.

Raimo van der Klein, CEO of Layar: “Augmented Reality is starting to behave like a true mass medium. It is becoming scalable with the introduction of its own discovery mechanism. We know that real-time location-based content discovery drives frequent re-use of the Layar browser.”

Last week the published layer count passed 700 with several thousand more in development. These layers currently serve 2.4 million objects a day and are now indexed and ranked using the patent pending Stream Technology. Stream supports any location based object published into Layar such as check-ins, coupons, status updates, gaming, information, 3D models and more. Publishers will also benefit by seeing their content, for the first time, served up at time and location most relevant to their users.

Layar Reality Browser version 3.5 with Stream Technology is available now for download in the Android Market. The iPhone release will be available soon.

Over 700 layers are published on the Layar Platform with over 2500 in development. These layers are developed by the global community of 3500 Layar publishers and producers, and by leading brands and agencies. Layar is located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The company is VC funded and has 32 employees.

The free Layar Reality Browser is available on Android devices and iPhone 3GS. The Layar Platform is available for anyone to create their own Augmented Reality experiences on.

[echelon 2010 Launchpad] MoVend – Creating a Seamless Mobile Payment System

Stream Media steps into the mobile payment industry with the launch of its core product – MoVend, an in-app commerce platform for the Android smartphones – at Echelon 2010, an annual web technology event.

Mr. Chua Zi Yong, the Founder and CEO of Stream Media said: “We wanted to create something that will make payment much easier for the users. This would mean an in-app payment system that will enable users to make transactions and payments without exiting the app. Hence, the user experience would be a seamless one.”

MoVend, which means mobile vending, is written such that other developers can incorporate it into their mobile applications. The need for an Android mobile payment system was discovered by Mr. Chua. “Paid Android apps are only available in nine countries. The rest of the customers are only being offered free apps. Thus, if they wanted to get the paid apps, they have to go to third party stores to download and make payment via credit cards.”

IMG_20100601_172030With MoVend, there is no need for developers to create a separate payment system, allowing them to fully focus on the development of their own mobile applications. “Developers can leave all the heavy lifting of the transactions to us. It will result in a faster turn around time for them!” says Mr. Leong Hean Hong, Project Manager of Stream Media.

For mobile applications installed with MoVend, end consumers who use the mobile application will be able to make payment without exiting the application itself. The ability to let users choose their own preferred payment method is crucial for developers as users’ preference defers from country to country. For instance, users in US and Canada will most likely make payment via Paypal while users in Asia likely choose to pay via premium SMS Operator Billing.

Android PSX emulator coming your way

ZodTTD has made a name for himself by developing a PSX emulator for the iPhone. After almost 2,000 people signed a petition to get his work ported from the iPhone, ZodTTD decided to step up to the plate. Partnering with the experienced emulator creator of NESoid and GameBoid to give himself an emulator base, the PSX emulator is shaping up to be a dream come true for nostalgia. Controls use the touch screen, the hard buttons, and even the trackball, however the interface seen above is that from GameBoid the Game Boy Advanced emulator for Android, and will not be the final product. There is also full screen support for the games however Shadensu of Digital Disbeliever says the emulator is currently a bit sluggish and doesn't quite hit the 60 FPS sweet spot. A performance boost is expected, but you will need to be running a version of Android 2.x and preferably one of the more top of the line Android devices spec wise. It also looks like ZodTTD may be taking a liking to Android, and is expected to begin work on a N64 emulator once the PSX one is polished off.
