Engineering America’s Most Reliable Wireless Network
The company’s ‘America’s most reliable wireless network’ reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country. By traversing more than one million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas – the equivalent of two roundtrips to the moon or 40 trips around the world – the test men and women confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3.5 million voice call attempts and more than 19 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

AT&T to Provide Network Infrastructure and Managed Network Services for New California Statewide Rural Telehealth Initiative

With FCC Rural Healthcare Pilot Program Funding, University of California Takes Lead on Formation of California Telehealth Network.

AT&T* announced a new agreement with the University of California to advance the growing practice of telehealth. As part of a three-year, $27 million contract, AT&T will provide Managed Network Services in support of this vital telehealth initiative.

The University of California is involved in establishing the California Telehealth Network (CTN). The vision of CTN is to deliver new models of care utilizing technology to address the health needs of patients in rural and urban areas of California.

CTN is the result of a statewide coalition of healthcare, technology, government, and other stakeholders, that sought funding from the Federal Communications Commission‘s Rural Health Care Pilot Program. With the goal of significantly increasing access to acute, primary and preventive health care in rural America, the FCC will provide CTN with up to $22.1 million over three years. CTN is a participant in the FCC Rural Healthcare Pilot Program which is responsible for managing the FCC funded project for the California Telehealth Network. Additional funds for the CTN initiative have been provided by collaborators including the California Emerging Technology Fund.

The CTN is building a statewide network infrastructure that will connect smaller hospitals and clinics to larger hospitals, their specialists and experts. When complete, the network will include more than 860 sites throughout the state.

“The University of California is pleased to conclude an extensive bid process and to award the contract to AT&T. This award marks a milestone in the FCC grant process, and we are excited to move to implementation of broadband to support healthcare throughout California" said Dr. Cathryn Nation, Associate Vice President of University of California and Co-Director of the California Telehealth Network.

“AT&T is eager to work with the University of California on this exciting and groundbreaking telehealth initiative,” said Ken McNeely, President, AT&T California. “We have always been about connecting people, and in this case, we’re thrilled our IP-based network will be used to help connect patients in rural and remote parts of California with the healthcare they need.”

According to the American Telemedicine Association, today, there are hundreds of networks linking thousands of medical centers in all 50 states. By using cameras, high-resolution monitors and other data-gathering tools, world-class doctors are reaching patients in rural areas who would otherwise have to travel hundreds of miles to be seen by specialists with the same expertise.

About California Telehealth Network
The California Telehealth Network (CTN) is part of an effort by the Federal Communications Commission to improve the rural health-care infrastructure throughout California and the nation. The University of California Office of the President, together with the UC Davis Health System, is serving as the legally and financially responsible partner for the project. A large and diverse group of partners includes representatives from the Office of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger; California Public Utilities Commission; California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency; and the California Health and Human Services Agency. In addition to the $22 million award from the FCC, nearly $10 million in funding has thus far been pledged to secure this award and support operations of the CTN. Contributors include the California Emerging Technology Fund, UnitedHealth, the California Teleconnect Fund, the National Coalition for Health Integration, and the California HealthCare Foundation. Participants in the project also include multiple regional and statewide associations representing health-care providers and existing telehealth networks.

AT&T to Deploy First Standards-Based HD-SDI Switching Capability to Distribute Contribution Video

AT&T's Intelligent Layer 1 Optical Network Combines with Next Generation Video Transport Technology.

AT&T* announced plans to deploy the industry’s first standards-based High Definition-SDI video transport and switching network capability designed for the professional broadcast marketplace and customers using AT&T’s Global Video Services.

The new feature will combine AT&T’s ultra fast, self-healing SONET optical network with next-generation video transport technology based on JPEG2000 compression standards. It will support HD-SDI at rates between 75Mb and 400Mb along with SD-SDI at 24Mb to 150Mb.

Following a successful pilot program in January, AT&T expects to start delivering the feature utilizing JPEG2000 compression capabilities beginning 3Q 2010 in major metropolitan areas across North America.

“This enhancement to our AT&T Global Video Services portfolio will enable broadcast customers to take advantage of a cost-effective, high availability, high quality compression process for migrating to next generation video services such as 3D and higher-quality HD,” said Sanford Brown, vice president, AT&T Connectivity and Metro Network Services. “AT&T has the ability to reach many media outlets on a global scale with a high level of network redundancy and resiliency — and now with JPEG2000 compression technology planned — for an unparalleled viewing experience.”

The new capability will provide something that broadcasters, content providers and production studios have been looking for -- innovative and cost-effective access to higher bit rate video services over reliable delivery methods. It is designed to help these businesses improve the viewing experience for consumers demanding video over traditional cable television in addition to new endpoints such as mobile phones and the Internet.

What’s more, it will address broadcasters’ needs to incorporate JPEG2000 compression technology while having to balance capital outlays for the necessary compression equipment with pressures on advertising revenues. Delivering high quality compression technology through AT&T’s network can allow broadcast customers to focus more dollars around reaching more locations to generate more advertising dollars.

Local Wireless Network Upgrade Extends Access to Advanced Products, Services and Applications.

AT&T* announced the availability of its third generation (3G) mobile broadband network in Duluth, opening the door to a new era of mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content for customers in the area.

The activation of 3G technology on more than 60 cell sites will enhance wireless coverage for residents and businesses in the greater Duluth area, as well as neighboring Superior, Wisconsin. The 3G network has also been enhanced along major roadways, including Highways 33, 25, 53 and 61 in Minnesota, and Highways 2, 35 and 53 in Wisconsin.

AT&T is an industry leader in delivering the benefits of mobile broadband networks, devices and applications. With the nation’s fastest 3G network, AT&T provides accelerated mobile data speeds and simultaneous voice and data capabilities for an amazing wireless voice and data experience.

“We applaud the efforts of AT&T for making the investments in Duluth and bringing 3G to the area,” said David Ross, president and CEO of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce. “We also applaud the leadership of Senator Yvonne Prettner Solon, chair of Senate Energy, Utilities, Technology and Communications, for her work in the Minnesota legislature, and Mayor Ness for his advocacy for technology in Duluth. Both have helped ensure that wireless companies are able to make the necessary investments in Minnesota to bring the latest 3G technology to our community.”

The network expansion in Duluth is part of AT&T’s ongoing efforts to drive investment and innovation to deliver the nation’s best, most advanced mobile broadband experience for customers. From 2007 through 2009, AT&T’s total capital investment in its Minnesota wireless and wireline networks was more than $275 million.

“These investments in smart networks are enabling the innovation of today and tomorrow that will enhance economic growth and stimulate jobs in Duluth,” said Bob Bass, president, AT&T Minnesota. “We commend the work of the Minnesota state legislature and the other leaders of our state who are creating a positive economic environment that provides opportunities for companies to continue to invest aggressively in Minnesota.”

Wireless data traffic on the AT&T network has grown more than 5,000 percent over the past three years, largely attributed to the increasing popularity of advanced smartphones and the performance of AT&T’s 3G network, the nation’s fastest.

“Demand for wireless bandwidth is growing, whether it’s for sharing video and photos with friends, watching a movie, checking the latest scores, or listening to music on a phone, netbook or other mobile devices on the go,” said Hardmon Williams, vice president and general manager for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets in Minnesota. “With this expansion, our customers can enjoy the nation’s best, most advanced mobile broadband experience with emerging devices and tens of thousands of mobile applications.”

AT&T recently completed a software upgrade at 3G cell sites nationwide that prepares the nation’s fastest 3G network for even faster speeds. The deployment of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is the first of multiple initiatives in AT&T’s network enhancement strategy designed to provide customers with an enhanced mobile broadband experience, both today and well into the future. Faster 3G speeds are scheduled to become available this year and in 2011 as AT&T combines the new technology with the increased deployment of high-speed backhaul connections to cell sites, primarily with fiber-optic technology.
