The people’s champion

LANCASHIRE, UK – Nokia Discussion Forums are a constant hive of activity. There, users can post questions about their mobile tech problems, grab tips to get more from their device or simply let off a bit of steam. It’s a big old community, but one user stands out more than others. Why? Well, this particular user has just posted his 20,000th post on the forum [actually, 20,006 as we write this, ed].

Based in the UK, Psychomania’s previously owned and used phones reads like a who’s who of Nokia devices. From the 3210 to the 7210, not to mention a smattering of Nseries devices, an E65, Nokia X6 and even the rather tasty 8800 Sirocco. Right now he’s using a Nokia 3720c. No wonder then, that he knows his stuff, too.

Psychomania’s advice doesn’t just stretch to answering users questions which, by the way, don’t just mean helping solve other users problems. He has a solid understanding of all things Nokia and only this week was commenting on the just announced Nokia N8.

One of his most popular posts is a rundown on what to do if a software update goes wrong. Over 70k users have read the post and it’s one of a number Psychomania has produced for the forum’s “pool of knowledge” section, joining his almost-as-popular post “Dropped your phone in water? Here’s what to do next“.

There’s no doubting the great man’s taste either, for we know he’s also an avid reader of this very tome. So, Pschyomania, we salute you. We applaud your hard work and dedication and we will be raising a virtual glass to toast this rather momentous milestone. And hope, please, that we’ll be celebrating your 40,000th post before too long.

Growing networks the smart way

Telecom operators increasingly recognize the need to reduce their environmental impact while pursuing business growth

· New approach from Ericsson helps operators make better informed investments to minimize both carbon emissions and cost of ownership

· Australian telecommunications operator Telstra - first to try the approach- learned of opportunities to reduce costs and carbon footprint while expanding its network

Growing network traffic and subscriber numbers have resulted in higher carbon footprint and network costs for operators. Operators are being challenged to respond to growing carbon emissions concerns, volatile fuel prices and potential added costs such as carbon taxes while expanding networks and achieving business growth. Growing business can be supported by modernizing and optimizing networks, sharing assets and resources, and changing the energy mix.

To help operators deal with these challenges, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) is now offering a groundbreaking TCO2 approach that measures carbon emissions and uses the total-cost-of-ownership methodology. By assessing the best combination of investment options for optimizing energy efficiency, the TCO2 approach supports operators' environmental and business objectives. It simply helps them save money while reducing the impact on the environment.

During 2009, Australian operator Telstra worked with Ericsson's consultants to conduct a nationwide carbon and energy audit of its wireless network. Mike Wright, Wireless Executive Director at Telstra says: "This study confirmed the benefits that Telstra is achieving through initiatives that have already been implemented. The study also identified the opportunity for us to reduce CO2 emissions by up to an estimated 30 percent in the radio access network and an estimated 56 percent in the core network. We are continuing to work with our partners to identify further opportunities to reduce our carbon intensity levels, as we work to achieve our company-wide target to reduce our carbon emissions intensity by at least 10 percent by 2015."

Håkan Eriksson, CTO at Ericsson says: "The TCO2 approach is vital when considering alternative network designs and power-saving features, evaluating capacity enhancements and minimizing environmental impact, not to mention when improving competitiveness. I believe that those players not using a TCO2 approach will be at a significant disadvantage."

The development of this new approach is part of how Ericsson works to constantly increase focus on energy efficiency in our products and services portfolio, helping customers reduce their environmental impact and costs. Taiwan Mobile to dole out handsome 2009 dividend

Telecom carrier Taiwan Mobile (TWM) will distribute a dividend per share of NT$5.03 in cash for its 2009 operation, its board of directors has decided.

TWM's 2009 dividend is higher than those to be distributed by its two competitors in Taiwan - Chunghwa Telecom's NT$4.06 and Far EasTone Telecommunications' NT$2.80.

As TWM's 2009 net EPS of NT$4.66 is lower than the dividend, the company will appropriate NT$2.5 billion (US$80 million) from its cumulative retained earnings to cover the gap, TWM said.

In related news, Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission on April 29 approved TWM's proposal to invest NT$49 million in ezPeer+, a peer-to-peer online music platform in Taiwan, for a 45% stake, TWM indicated.

TWM said its user base of more than six million subscribers is expected to help ezPeer+ expand its business operation.

HP to develop WebOS for IT services and tablet PCs, say Acer chairman and Digitimes analysts

Acer chairman JT Wang said in a recent interview that he believes Hewlett Packard's acquisition of Palm is not purely for smartphone development, but to also strengthen its push into back-end IT services for MIDs (mobile Internet device). The US$1.2 billion acquisition is a huge investment and the actual effects remain to be seen, Wang added.

Digitimes Research senior analyst Mingchi Kuo pointed out that WebOS is one of the very few platforms that enable smooth multi-tasking, and it is suitable for both smartphones and MIDs. With the deal, HP is likely to make a strong move into the 10-inch and under MID market, he said.

HP is currently using Windows 7, Android and Meego in the development of its line of Slate tablet PCs, but all three operating systems have their weaknesses – Windows 7's fast battery consumption, Android's low resolution, and Meego is not market ready, Kuo said, and hence it's logical for HP to want to build a platform of its own.
