Ericsson ties up with Taiwan makers to explore TV solution business

Saturday, January 30, 2010

Ericsson is strengthening its cooperation with Taiwan-based network equipment makers as it strives to expand its television solution business which covers new TV services such as MOD, mobile TV and interactive TV, according to Jesper Nystrom, head of multimedia and systems integration at Ericsson Taiwan.

The team-up efforts aim to explore new business opportunities by leveraging Ericsson's strength in the multimedia industry and Taiwan makers' capabilities in the manufacture of TV and other consumer electronics products, Nystrom said.

Under the cooperation projects, Ericsson is responsible for the supply of head-end equipment and system solutions, while local makers are offering IP STBs (set-top boxes) and implementing system integration.

Among Taiwan makers, D-Link, Wistron NeWeb, Hitron Technologies and HwaCom Systems, have already teamed up with Ericsson to tap the international and domestic markets, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Other STB makers in Taiwan, including Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), Zyxel Communications, Zinwell Communications and Gemtek Technology, are also expected to tie up with Ericsson in such joint efforts, the sources indicated.
