Motorola may unseat HTC as top Android phone vendor in 2010, says Digitimes Research Tweet

Motorola is likely to unseat HTC (High Tech Computer) as the world's top vendor of Android-powered handsets in 2010, with shipments of Android phones accounting for a 34.7% share of the segment compared to HTC's 31.9%, according to Digitimes Research.

Shipments of Android phones by HTC totaled six million units in 2009, making HTC the number one vendor with a 64.5% share of the segment, Digitimes Research estimated.

However, shipments of the Droid, Motorola's first Android-powered smartphone, reached two million units, or 25% of global Android phone sales, in less than a quarter following its launch in late October 2009.

Since the launch of the Droid, Motorola has also released seven more Android-based smartphones with plans to launch a total of 30 Android model in 2010, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Focusing solely on Android platform smartphones, Motorola may eventually ship a total of 12.5-15.6 million units in 2010, during which time total sales of Android smartphones are expected to reach 35-36 million units, Digitimes Research projected.

HTC's share in the Android smartphone segment is expected to drop by nearly half in 2010 as compared the 2009 level, because the company will also continue to launch Windows Mobile- and Brew MP-based models in addition to Google phones, Digitimes Research said.
