Taiwan market: CHT to triple Wi-Fi access points in 2010 to meet increasing wireless traffic

Friday, February 5, 2010

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) plans to expand the number of its Wi-Fi access points to 5,000 by the end of 2010 compared to 1,300 units currently, according to company president Shiao-tung Chang.

The expansion aims to ease the heavy traffic burden placed on the carrier's 3.5G and HSPA networks due to CHT's growing mobile service business, Chang said.

CHT aims to sell 100,000 netbooks and 400,000 smartphones in 2010, which in turn will complicate the traffic congestion problem on its mobile broadband networks, according to industry watchers.
