Taiwan Mobile also plans to increase its purchases of smartphones in 2010, pushing the ratio of smartphones to its total handset procurement for the year to 18% compared to 10% in 2009, the Chinese-language Commercial Times quoted the company as indicating. Handsets purchased by Taiwan Mobile are expected to top 1.3 million units in 2010, the paper added.
Having launched its own-brand T1 Android-powered smartphone for the entry-level to mid-range segments on February 24, Taiwan Mobile will also start marketing Apple's iPhones in the local market in March, according to Cliff Lai, COO of consumer business group at Taiwan Mobile.
The T1 smartphone carries a suggested retail price of NT$8,900 (US$277.34), the lowest-priced Android phone currently available in the Taiwan market, Commercial Times indicated.
