Taiwan market: TWM to not consider LTE until 2012

Friday, April 16, 2010

Taiwan Mobile (TWM) will focus on HSPA (high-speed packet access) and HSPA+ for 3G upgrade and will not evaluate the feasibility of adopting LTE (long term evolution) until 2012, according to the company.

The Taiwan-based carrier explained that LTE entails high infrastructure cost and its technology is not yet mature. The Taiwan government has not yet made policies for LTE, and there are no frequency bands designated for LTE, or regulations concerning the issuing of LTE licenses, TWM indicated.

But as the use of mobile broadband access to the Internet is growing fast, HSPA+ is expected to be insufficient to meet the demand in 2014. Therefore TWM may begin considering the possibility of adopting LTE in 2012, the company said.
