Vee Telecom is also an operator of cable TV and cable modem broadband Internet-access service and has set up a 4,000km fiber-optic network as backhaul for WiMAX base stations, the company indicated.
Having set up about 300 WiMAX base stations for a coverage rate of 90% in the Taichung area in central Taiwan, Vee Telecom will invest NT$1 billion (US$32 million) to set up about 1,000 base stations in three neighboring counties, and extend its fiber-optic network to those counties in 2010, the company said.
The WiMAX operation is expected to break even in terms of EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization) when the number of subscribers increases to 30,000-50,000, Vee Telecom noted.
Vee Telecom has rolled out routers integrated with WiMAX, Wi-Fi and USB dongles, and will offer WiMAX-enabled handsets in the second half of 2010, the company indicated.
