ZTE to launch first Android phone in 1Q

Chinese vendor ZTE expects to launch its first smartphones based on Google’s Android platform during the first quarter of the year. "With the growing trend and popularity of Android smartphones, ZTE is committed to invest in this innovative platform to meet the market demand," said Lin Qiang, general manager of ZTE Smartphones, in a brief statement. The vendor is also joining the Open Handset Alliance, the group of 65 technology and mobile companies focused on advancing Android. "To accommodate this trend, ZTE has invested heavily in the research and development of Android smartphones during the last year,” the firm said

ZTE joins a growing list of smartphone vendors that are backing the Android platform. LG said earlier this week that half of all of its new smartphones launched this year will be based on Android in a bid to make up ground in the smartphone space. Similarly, Motorola is looking at Android handsets as a strategy to help its struggling handset unit return to profitability this year; the US vendor unveiled its fifth Android device – the Backflip – at the CES show last week. Nokia is the only major handset vendor to date not supporting Android.

Lenovo Stands By Google Android Phone

HONG KONG—Lenovo Group Ltd. said Friday its new smart phone using Google Inc.'s Android platform is on track to be launched in May in China and the U.S. search engine giant's ongoing spat with China won't impact its operations.

Lenovo, China's biggest personal computer maker by shipments, has traditionally focused on the PC market for growth but is now joining other PC makers to launch mobile devices in a move to diversify into other areas and boost margins.

Executives said Lenovo plans to launch "LePhone" in China first and plans to release the phone in overseas markets later this year.

Since Google's statement last week that it would no longer censor its Chinese Web site even if that meant halting operations in the country, many have been concerned about handset vendors' ability to supply Android-based phones in China.

Google said earlier this week that it is delaying the China launch of two cellphones made by Samsung Electronics Co. and Motorola Inc. that use its operating system.

Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said Thursday his company remains "quite committed" to remaining in China, but will in a "reasonably short time" make changes to its now-censored search results. Mr. Schmidt said the company was "in conversation" with government authorities and that Google's business in China today remains unchanged.

"LePhone uses the Android operating system but we tailor our phones with our own applications. We are cooperating with other major Chinese Internet service providers including Sina, Sohu and Tencent," said Lenovo Chief Technology Officer He Zhiqiang.

He said Lenovo will sell the smart phone to all of the three Chinese telecommunications operators, China Unicom Ltd., China Mobile Ltd. and China Telecom Corp.

Lenovo is pinning high hopes on its handset business and expects the growth of handset shipments to exceed that of PCs in the future, Chief Executive Yang Yuanqing said.

Shareholders approved Friday Lenovo's plan to buy back mobile handset maker Lenovo Mobile Communication Technology Ltd. for US$200 million in cash and shares. It sold the unprofitable business in March 2008 to a group of investors led by the private-equity arm of its parent, Legend Holdings, for US$100 million.

"We see an explosive growth opportunity in China's mobile Internet market but the market is lacking the right localized product," said Mr. Yang. "Lenovo has an edge as we have a strong brand and distribution channel in China."

Mr. Yang said China's largest PC maker by shipments aims to become the country's largest handset maker in the future, but he didn't give a specific timeframe.

Lenovo said earlier Lenovo Mobile ranks third in China's mobile handset market by shipments behind Nokia Corp. and Samsung Electronics.

* Disappointing sunlight legibility

* Video recording maxes out at QVGA@15fps

* Google Maps is the only GPS navigation app
* microSD slot is under the battery cover

The original Corby and the Samsung B5310 CorbyPRO which showed up less than a month later are like brothers from different mothers. They are so much alike, yet so different. And it is exactly this versatility that keeps the Corby range up and running. A glance at all the Corby devices reveals something this article started with: there is a Corby for everyone.

But, having seen the CorbyPRO in action, we can safely conclude: there is a Corby that wants to be the top Corby. If you are into texting, into web surfing, into music and pictures, and want to give touchscreen a try but don’t want a smartphone, the CorbyPRO is a nice choice. Yes, the Samsung B5310 CorbyPRO has a lot to offer, but why does it get the PRO label?

Well, it's definitely not because the B5310 is the ultimate feature phone. There are some downsides but none of them are a deal breaker. It's all plastic and looks and feels a bit cheap, the camera lacks autofocus and the screen could have been a lot better (both in terms of size and image quality).

If there’s one reason why it deserves to be called a Pro it’s a darn good one. The CorbyPRO has a QWERTY keyboard it can be proud of. In fact, it’s an absolute surprise given the relatively low cost, the plastic build and the not-too-demanding target audience.

The current street price of the Samsung B5310 CorbyPRO is somewhere below 300 US dollars. In its price group there are quite a few competitors to match it. Some of them have a side-slide QWERTY keyboard, while the others are candybar messengers.

If you are keen on sliders, before you head for the store to buy a CorbyPRO you should also consider the following threesome: the LG GW520, the Samsung B3410 and the Nokia 6760 slide. All of them skimp on Wi-Fi support (the B3410 has no 3G either), the 6760 slide is a non-touchscreen phone and the GW520 has no 3.5mm audio jack. On the other hand, the B3410 is considerably cheaper, the 6760 slide is a smartphone and the GW520 comes with a much larger screen.

The other group of competitors feature the Samsung B3210 CorbyTXT, LG GW300 and the Nokia E63. None of them is a touchscreen and the CorbyTXT display is on the small side and has a shockingly low resolution. The GW300 has a worse camera and loses points due to its limited connectivity options. The E63 is a powerful yet affordable smartphone with rich connectivity capabilities so you might be willing to forgive the disappointing snapper.

So, as you can see, there is a long list of competitors waiting to stand face to face with the Samsung B5310 CorbyPRO. Some of them hold some really strong cards up their sleeves while the greatest strength of some others is simply that they cost a lot less.

Honestly though, the CorbyPRO has the form factor and the feature set to find itself right in the thick of heavyweight smart messenger action. No, we’re not saying it’s a viable alternative for QWERTY touchscreen smartphones – no way. But it seems capable of carving its own niche and serving it well.

Vodafone sells 100,000 iPhones in one week

Apparently they're quite popular.

Vodafone has announced the sale of its 100,000th iPhone since it launched the device one week ago.

Though O2, Orange and Tesco Mobile all range the iPhone too, Vodafone has been marketing itself as the network with the best coverage - and at the same time pimping its signal-boosting box, Sure Signal, which uses a broadband router to improve 3G signal for mobile phones.

Vodafone UK CEO Guy Laurence said, "The demand from both consumer and business customers has been phenomenal. They want an outstanding phone on an outstanding network and we're delivering that."

Vodafone iPhone users also get access to Voda-exclusive app - People Sync, which syncs your iPhone and PC/Mac contacts and backs them all up online at Vodafone's 360 service; and Vodafone Navigation, a mobile maps app which ponies up turn by turn voice navigation.
