Motorola Launches Next Generation of Mission Critical Terminals with the MTM5400 TETRA Radio

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

- Motorola expands its world-leading TETRA portfolio, which includes enhanced safety, security and efficiency features
- MTM5400 enables over-the-air programming – an industry first
- First TETRA mobile with voice and TEDS capability

TETRA World Congress, Singapore – The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), the world’s leading provider of mission critical communication solutions, today announced the launch of the first in its next generation of TETRA radios. The MTM5400 is the first radio to make use of a powerful new platform developed by Motorola that includes advanced capabilities such as TETRA Enhanced Data Service (TEDS) and advanced local networking capabilities and enables ground breaking over-the-air programming to enable more efficient fleet management.

The MTM5400 radio provides extended network coverage, greater audio performance and high-speed data connectivity. The features aid essential workflow management and group communication, which is a necessity in mission critical operations. Mission critical workers can benefit from higher data speeds through the integrated TEDS capability, delivering an increase in data throughput of 20x or more to back office systems and remote databases, which enables faster communication, access to information and data sharing. The radio also includes an integrated repeater-gateway function and a 10W transmission power capability to ensure secure and resilient communication at all times, regardless of coverage availability.

“Fast and secure communication is a necessity for public safety personnel who rely on radio terminals to coordinate response strategies and respond immediately to mission critical situations,” explains Jens Kristiansen, vice president and general manager, TETRA Global Products and Solutions, Motorola. “We are delighted that our next generation of TETRA terminals provides enhanced features that ensure exceptional performance and user safety in the field and remote locations.”

Designed to reduce radio downtime and promote operational efficiency and terminal management, the MTM5400 is particularly beneficial to organisations with a large radio base. It can be programmed over the air – a groundbreaking feature that is also an industry first in the TETRA market – which improves terminal management efficiency and personnel productivity. This significantly reduces the need for radios to be returned to designated locations for programming, which can maximise operational efficiency and significantly reduce operational costs for fleet maintenance. A further advanced feature is the ability for the radio to stay fully operational whilst being programmed, eliminating downtime for radio reprogramming.

The key features of the MTM5400 include:

*

Faster data access with a simple software upgrade for TEDS high-speed data connectivity
*

10W transmission power and industry-leading receiver sensitivity for increased coverage
*

Direct mode operations (DMO) repeater-gateway capability
*

Over-the-air terminal management capability and background programmability to enable the radio to stay live while
being programmed help to reduce operation and maintenance costs

Motorola’s TETRA portfolio includes infrastructure solutions, terminals, applications and services that are now used in 100 countries worldwide. To date, the company maintains its leading position in the sector of TETRA digital radio solutions. The rugged, intuitively operated products from Motorola already undergo extensive tests during the development phase to ensure high quality and reliable handling even under extreme conditions

Motorola Announces New Software Platform to Improve Operational Efficiency of Mission Critical Networks

Dimetra™7.1 IP system provides emergency-service customers with faster data access and improved resilience while providing network operators with reduced cost of ownership enabled through IP transmission technology.

TETRA WORLD CONGRESS, Singapore – Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc (NYSE: MOT), world leader in the development and deployment of TETRA communication solutions, nnounced the launch of a new versatile software platform – Dimetra™7.1 – that addresses the ongoing challenges mission critical users are facing.

The Dimetra™ 7.1 software platform provides mission critical end users such as police, fire or ambulance services with a range of capabilities that allow simplified, higher-speed access to data, improved network security and flexible network capacity and coverage. The variety of new features will support the evolution of the customer‘s network infrastructure while enabling customer specific requirements, enhancing operational efficiency and optimising operators’ capital expenditure.

The key capabilities provided by the Dimetra™ 7.1software platform are:

* High-speed Data
TETRA Enhanced Data Services (TEDS) supports wider-scale deployment of mission critical data applications. TEDS provides secure, higher-speed connectivity for existing data applications and allows a richer user experience by combining image, text and voice to field operatives.
* Security and Resilience
End-to-end encrypted logging and playback provides increased security by ensuring that encrypted voice logs are only decrypting on playback. With end-to-end encrypted data, agencies can provide a highly secure environment in which data (as well as voice) can be encrypted while remaining transparent to end-user applications.
* Reduced Cost of Ownership Enabled Through Next-generation Transmission Technologies
IP-over-Ethernet connectivity allows network operators to benefit from significant operational expenditure (OPEX) reductions through the ability to benefit from the next generation in transmission technologies. By being integrated with the infrastructure equipment, the IP-over-Ethernet feature eliminates the need for external boxes that interoperate with legacy transmission protocols. Furthermore, the packet-based nature of IP-over-Ethernet networking enables a greater level of efficiency and cost effectiveness, which is particularly important with the increased demands on the network such as the introduction of higher-speed data services such as TEDS.

“The introduction of the Dimetra™ 7.1 software platform reaffirms Motorola’s support for the industry trend of evolving mission critical networks,” says Jens Kristiansen, vice president and general manager, TETRA Global Products and Solutions, Motorola. “Motorola demonstrates once again the ability to remain on the forefront of mission critical technology by taking full advantage of the benefits of TEDS and recognising the importance of the industry’s ever-changing technological requirements.”

TEDS provides a higher quality of service for data applications that drive increased operational efficiency such as database lookups. This is an extremely important tool for fire and rescue services, which require fast access to maps, or police who require image download for missing persons. TEDS also helps to reduce the load on the dispatcher, as individuals are able to access the information themselves without contacting the dispatcher to do so for them. In addition to these features, TEDS offers invaluable high-speed data services during disasters.

Motorola’s newly announced MTS1 and MTS4E base stations have been designed to support the Dimetra™ 7.1 software. Together, with the portfolio of high-capacity, high-performance base stations, the software will provide flexible, resilient network coverage to mission critical services.

Motorola’s TETRA portfolio includes infrastructure solutions, terminals, applications and services that are now used in 100 countries worldwide. To date, the company maintains its leading position in the sector of TETRA digital radio solutions. The rugged, intuitively operated products from Motorola already undergo extensive tests during the development phase to ensure high quality and reliable handling even under extreme conditions.

Under the modified “Dutch Auction” procedure, Motorola will accept debt securities validly tendered in the order of lowest to highest premiums specified by the Holders and will select the single lowest premium that will enable Motorola to purchase debt securities in the Dutch Auction Offer in an aggregate principal amount up to the Tender Cap. Holders who tender their debt securities without specifying a premium will be deemed to have specified a premium of zero basis points.

The Offer to Purchase and related Letter of Transmittal also address certain U.S. federal income tax issues. Holders should seek their own advice based on their particular circumstances from an independent tax advisor.

Nokia Instant Community gets you social

TAMPERE, Finland – Fresh from the corridors of Nokia Research Center in Tampere comes Nokia Instant Community, which enables you to chat and share content with those around you instantly. Tucked away in Nokia’s Demola innovation event in Tampere, Finland, this latest research offering bring social networking to the masses. Fancy finding out who’s around you? Join us after the jump for more.

The clever thing about Nokia Instant Community is that it doesn’t need the internet, so no searching for a wifi hotspot to get you in touch, and you don’t need infared or bluetooth either. It works completely by using the device’s adhoc wifi. Without any drop-outs or connection problems you’ll be making new friends anywhere and everywhere.

Developed in conjunction with Tampere University of Technology (TUT), the university created the concept user interface, while NRC got cracking on the underlying communications technology that allows you to connect with an infinite amount of devices across a huge geographical area.

The two apps showcased working on the platform demonstrated how you could instant message with folks nearby, share pictures, songs and contact information along with other content you’d like others to be privy to on your device. An obvious concern is privacy, but secret squirrels needn’t worry, if you don’t want to connect then you don’t have to.

Nokia Instant Community is still in the research stage at the moment, but I managed to bag myself a hands-on with the platform here in Tampere and from first glance it could be fantastic. Imagine heading to a festival or a football game and chatting away with those around you about the gig, or sharing people’s pics and soundbites right there and then.

We also caught up with both Niko Kiukkonen and Kari Leppänen at the event for a full rundown of the platform and it’s inner workings. Check out the video to see it all in action. Once you’re done let us know what you think in the comments section below. Which social networks would you like to see running on it?

Nokia N900 software update release 1.2

ESPOO, Finland – Attention Nokia N900 owners: there’s a new software update coming your way this week (UK release today, and global release tomorrow Wednesday, May 26). Version 1.2 (V10.2010.19-1) comes offering a range of enhancements to the already bursting Maemo5 mobile computer. Join us after the jump to find out what’s in store.

First up – new games join the veritable arcade already on offer in Ovi Store. Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster, Zen-bound, Angry Birds (level pack), Sygic, Kroll, Weatherbug, and GoGadget are all available to keep you entertained. Important to note though that Ovi Store will do a full switchover this week Thursday, May 27, so these games and other for-purchase apps will show up then.

Next are the improvements to communication. Email has been improved with the ability to accept or decline an event invitation right there in your inbox, and Facebook IM chat has also been bundled in. The release also brings with it video calling, allowing users face-to-face chatting anywhere.

An additional update you will be pleased to hear about is portrait browsing on the internet is a-go on the N900. Ovi Maps also gets the update treatment with changes to the UI, improving the experience of finding your way around. And finally, there’s also a change to the menu system UI with the first level now customisable.

Moving away from the update and to look at MeeGo and the Nokia N900. Many of you have been asking whether the new MeeGo platform will be supported on the N900 once it’s device-ready. Although Nokia N900 devices are being used for platform development and testing purposes by those involved in the MeeGo project, Nokia doesn’t have plans for a full scale commercial MeeGo upgrade on the Nokia N900. The reason? It’s really about ensuring that you have the best possible experience designed for the features on your Nokia N900 device. Nokia realises this news may be a disappointment for some, rest assured that Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo software on your Nokia N900, as evidenced by the PR 1.2 (V10.2010.19-1) update available today.
