Scanbuy Releases Tool Which Allows Developers to Launch a Mobile Barcode Scanner From a Wide Variety of Apps

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

ScanLife application can now be launched from other branded mobile applications for users to scan all major 2D and 1D barcodes using the phone's camera.

NEW YORK -- Scanbuy, Inc., the global leader in mobile barcode solutions, announced that it has released a Software Development Kit (SDK) which allows mobile application developers to launch the ScanLife mobile barcode reader from any third party application. The tool will be immediately available at no cost to work with Google's Android operating system, and others will be added in the coming weeks.

ScanLife is a complete, all-in-one code scanner which can quickly launch mobile content by scanning any number of commonly used 2D and 1D barcodes like QR, Datamatrix, EZcode, UPC, EAN and ISBN. It is the preferred choice for a number of leading handset manufacturers and mobile operators, already installed and preloaded on over 25 million devices today around the world. Due to its level of distribution, ScanLife has been tested thoroughly on hundreds of devices.

Now, any developer can launch a generic version of the app so their users can scan barcodes found on magazines, newspapers, signage, packaging and more. Codes can launch virtually any type of content in seconds, like videos, product details or contact information. For example, a media publisher can include a code scanner in their app so readers can immediately connect to digital content from a printed magazine or newspaper.

"The demand from publishers and marketers for this kind of tool has been very strong, and that shows how this space is quickly going mainstream," said Jonathan Bulkeley, Chief Executive Officer of Scanbuy. "We hope this solution will give developers a very simple and efficient way of including this feature and we are excited to see the innovation which comes from it."

The tool is extremely easy to integrate for developers and no camera handling knowledge is needed. A user simply launches a generic version of the ScanLife app to return content associated with a 2D barcode. UPC codes scanned from retail or packaging will display a wide variety of information on that product, like prices and reviews, which the app collects using API's from leading online retailers covering categories like electronics, books, and consumer packaged goods. Scanbuy will soon release an Enterprise version of the SDK which will allow retailers to link to their specific content, providing valuable information to shoppers while they are in the store.

Publishers can also use the ScanLife Code Management Platform (www.scanlife.com) to generate, edit, and track 2D code formats like EZcode, Datamatrix or QR Code. The platform provides valuable performance data from a self-managed dashboard that includes number of scans, unique users, demographics, location, handset type and more. This gives publishers critical information on how users are interacting with their content.

The ScanLife mobile application is available across all major operating systems including Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Symbian, and more. It can be downloaded for free from www.getscanlife.com on the mobile browser.

Developers interested in learning more about the ScanLife SDK for Android can visit www.scanlife.com for more information.

Cheats, Sneaks & Scoundrels Rejoice: New Service Assures Cell Phone and Text Privacy

PrivateBryan.com Service All but Eliminates the Chance of a Cheating Partner Being Betrayed by the Cell Phone.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- In what is sure to spark some controversy, a new service was launched that allows its members to conceal their text and call activity from spouses, partners and others. Called Private Bryan and available at http://www.privatebryan.com, it is a subscription service that allows users of most U.S. cell phone carriers to add a layer of protection to prevent calls and texts from arriving at the wrong time.

The cell phone has become one of the primary ways that spouses and partners discover extra-relationship affairs. Recently, some of the highest-profile celebrity breakups were sparked by careless use of text messaging. For as little as $14.99 per month, the world's greatest golfer might still be living his carefree and wild life, instead of a life of shame and repentance, while he awaits a massive hit to his personal wealth.

"It's not just Tiger Woods and Jesse James that have had their lives ruined by texting," said Bryan Galvin, founder and CEO of Private Bryan. "Our research shows that cell phones have led to 25 percent of the entire population being caught doing something wrong. Among Generation Y, that number jumps to over 50 percent. Used properly, our product puts an end to that."

The service is also more affordable and convenient than keeping a second, secret cell phone, which a Motorola study suggested at least one in ten people worldwide do.

Keeps Affairs Private

Private Bryan provides users with multi-layered protection in the following ways:

* Texts don't come in at the wrong time - innocuous news alerts are delivered to the phone until the user replies with a PIN to release the real text for delivery

* Phone numbers remain private - the member's phone number is never used as texts and calls are sent to a unique Private Bryan username

* Reply texts don't display a phone number, which further keeps the member's identity private and the texting history more difficult to attribute to a specific individual

* Calls don't come in at the wrong time - audio news alerts are delivered to the phone, which require a PIN for a direct connection

* Voicemails are left in a secure online inbox so there are no personal messages left on the phone

Perhaps the biggest benefit of the protection Private Bryan offers is the ability of users to avoid acting suspicious around their phone, which is often a dead giveaway that something is amiss. Additionally, since calls and texts are directed to a unique username rather than a traceable phone number, Private Bryan keeps the member's phone number private.

"Life is short. Because of that, there is absolutely no reason to complicate it with the pain and aggravation of getting caught having an affair," added Galvin. "If you happen to be screwing around, your phone shouldn't betray you."

How Private Texting Works

With this elegantly simple, yet completely unique service, a "side friend" sends a text through Private Bryan by entering the member's unique username before typing the message. Private Bryan sends the member a real alert from a news source that has been chosen by the member in advance, which is the signal that a private text has been received. When the coast is clear, the member simply replies to the news alert with a PIN and the private text is then forwarded to the phone. Once read, it is up to the user to be smart and delete the text from his or her phone.

How Private Calling Works

Similar to the Private Texting service, Private Calling kicks in when a "side friend" calls the Private Bryan phone system and enters the member's username. At that point, Private Bryan connects the call. If answered, the member hears a news update from a source that was chosen in advance, which is the signal that a Private Caller is waiting. To be directly connected, the member simply enters their PIN. To decline the call, he or she simply hangs up. Your friend can leave a message that will be stored online in your Private Bryan inbox.

Verizon's Second Field Trial of 10 Gigabit-per-Second XG-PON Fiber-to-the-Premises System Affirms FiOS Network Design is Future-Ready

Test Includes Two Symmetrical 1 Gbps PC Links Running on the System.

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Continuing to leverage the immense capacity of its fiber-to-the-home network, Verizon has completed a field trial of a second XG-PON fiber-optic distribution system connecting a FiOS customer location with 10 gigabits per second downstream to the home and 2.5 Gbps upstream. The test demonstrates the capability of the Verizon's FiOS network to accommodate a wide array of new and emerging video services and the growing demand for streaming video content and other bandwidth-intensive applications.

The latest field trial was conducted in May in Taunton, Mass., with a XG-PON system developed by Motorola, a supplier of BPON and GPON optical networking equipment to Verizon.

At the customer's home, the optical network terminal (ONT) received the 10/2.5 Gbps feed and used two data communication ports to simultaneously provide transmission speeds of close to 1 Gbps to each of two PCs inside the home. Combined, the two ports delivered approximately 1.85 Gbps in aggregate bandwidth in each direction.

Tests were designed to simulate what two different customers might experience while using their PCs to download, upload or share files to the Internet when served by a 10G PON system. In addition, speed tests were performed to Verizon's speed test server located more than 400 miles away in Reston, Va., realized speeds of up to 915 Mbps between the PC and the speed test server.

"XG-PON can provide the capacity needed to support the explosive growth in bandwidth envisioned for new and emerging services such as 3DTV and Ultra HD TV, and the growing demand for streaming video content to the PC and TV, as well as the increased use of concurrent applications," said Vincent O'Byrne, director of technology for Verizon's FTTP architecture and design effort.

Brian Whitton, executive director of technology for Verizon, said, "The continuing validation of XG-PON technology in the lab and in the field reaffirms Verizon's commitment to FiOS and its leadership in the broadband and entertainment industry."

The Verizon technology team plans to continue testing XG-PON with other suppliers in the laboratory and in the network, and also, by year-end, to submit to suppliers a request for information for XG-PON technology.

Alternate Network Link Tried

Verizon's latest groundbreaking field test used Motorola equipment deployed with dual fibers from an OLT (optical line terminal) in a Verizon switching facility to a combiner that coupled the XG-PON system with the existing GPON system. This is an approach covered in the standards. The dual fiber linkage is seen as a way to reduce the overall costs of XG-PON and is under investigation by suppliers and service providers. On the customer-facing side of the network, the test data traveled over a single FiOS fiber link to the customer test location.

"We continue to explore technologies that will allow Verizon to further evolve our FiOS network toward the functionality and speed the market will require," said Mark Wegleitner, senior vice president of technology for Verizon. "As an example, it would take a customer less than three minutes to download a 20 gigabyte, Blu-ray movie over a 1 Gbps link, as opposed to close to four and a half hours over a 10 Mbps Internet connection. A business customer using this service could backup data on an online server every night in just a few minutes, as opposed to hours.

"As we've said before, the fiber itself is passive; it's what we do with the electronics that will leverage its capacity," he said.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE, Nasdaq: VZ), headquartered in New York, is a global leader in delivering broadband and other wireless and wireline communications services to mass market, business, government and wholesale customers. Verizon Wireless operates America's most reliable wireless network, serving nearly 93 million customers nationwide. AT&T Completes Acquisition of Divestiture Properties from Verizon Wireless

Acquisition enhances AT&T's network coverage and connects rural Americans to leading-edge mobile broadband technologies.

AT&T* completed its acquisition of wireless assets from Verizon Wireless. The transaction enhances AT&T’s wireless network coverage in primarily rural areas in 79 service areas across 18 states. To secure regulatory approvals for its purchase of Alltel in 2009, Verizon Wireless agreed to divest the properties.

Once network transition work is completed, the approximately 1.6 million subscribers in these service areas will enjoy the benefits of AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network — the nation’s fastest. AT&T expects to roll out its 3G service to all of the acquired properties.

“Mobile broadband is changing how we live our lives and transforming every sector of business, and AT&T is leading the way,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “We’re excited that with this acquisition, AT&T will bring the benefits of mobile broadband to new subscribers. We mobilize everything for our customers by delivering the best 3G experience, the fastest 3G speeds nationwide, the most popular smartphones, an array of emerging devices like eReaders and netbooks, the ability to talk and browse the Web at the same time and access to more than 225,000 apps.”**

Integration Plans
The transaction extends AT&T’s wireless network coverage in primarily rural areas of Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming.

Over a period of approximately 12 months, AT&T will launch service on a market-by-market basis as network integration work is completed. For now, there are no changes to customers’ phone numbers, rate plans, network coverage, customer service contacts or processes for making monthly bill payments. During network integration, customers will have the opportunity to select a device comparable to their existing device at no additional cost. They may also choose an upgraded handset from AT&T’s exciting lineup of industry-leading devices.*** Existing AT&T customer contracts are not affected.

The company will inform subscribers of changes in advance and is committed to making the transition as easy and convenient as possible while working to deliver a high level of service to affected customers. Rebranding to AT&T will also occur on a market-by-market basis as service is launched.

Subscribers joining AT&T will enjoy significant benefits. Today, AT&T offers voice and data coverage reaching 97 percent of Americans, the broadest international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider; more applications running over its network; and access to the nation’s fastest 3G network. Unlike some other wireless networks, AT&T’s 3G network enables subscribers to talk and e-mail or surf the Web at the same time. And thanks to the industry’s leading lineup of devices, more smartphone users have chosen AT&T than any other wireless carrier. Subscribers who choose smartphones and LaptopConnect cards with a current DataConnect Plan will also have access to AT&T’s entire nationwide Wi-Fi hot spot network at no additional charge.****

AT&T is also the undisputed leader in emerging consumer devices and a mobile broadband network of choice for most major consumer categories such as eReaders, netbooks, personal navigation devices and digital photo frames. Subscribers in the acquired service areas will have even more opportunities to take advantage of the connectivity delivered by this new class of mobile broadband devices.

Agreement Terms
Under terms of the agreement, AT&T is purchasing the assets for approximately $2.35 billion in cash. The transaction primarily represents former Alltel assets, but it also includes assets from Verizon Wireless and the former Rural Cellular Corporation.

The transaction adds customers and enhances network coverage and is expected to deliver substantial long-term stockholder value. Wireless is the largest growth driver and value creator in the telecommunications industry, and this acquisition continues AT&T’s strong track record of investing in growth. In 2009 AT&T’s capital investments totaled $17.3 billion, and AT&T plans to invest between $18 and 19 billion in 2010, assuming a favorable regulatory environment, including an increase of approximately $2 billion over 2009 levels in wireless network and supporting wireline backhaul investments.
