Kabel BW Upgrades with Motorola’s Ultra-Broadband Solutions

Monday, May 3, 2010

Kabel BW offers its customers across the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg high-speed broadband and IP telephony services.

IDSTEIN, Germany – Motorola, Inc’s (NYSE: MOT) Mobile Devices and Home business announced that Kabel BW, one of the leading cable network operators in Germany, has selected new EuroDOCSIS 3.0 solutions from Motorola to offer personalized media experiences to customers in cities in the German federal state Baden-Wuerttemberg with broadband speeds of currently up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps). The extended services portfolio of Kabel BW is based on Motorola’s BSR 64000 Integrated CMTS (I-CMTS) and TX32 decoupled downstream module. In addition, Motorola provided integration and implementation services in support of Kabel BW’s network rollout.

Motorola’s I-CMTS can support two fully redundant TX32 modules and is designed to offer operators five times more downstream capacity while reducing the cost per port by up to 60 percent. With Motorola’s EuroDOCSIS 3.0 and channel bonding solutions, Kabel BW can deliver additional advanced multimedia via higher-rate broadband service tiers while protecting existing DOCSIS deployments and investment.

“Motorola has broad experience in developing and delivering proven EuroDOCSIS 3.0 solutions,” said Ludwig Modra, business unit manager network operation and technology at Kabel BW. “By upgrading our infrastructure to DOCSIS 3.0, we are able to provide our customers with even faster broadband Internet, which can truly make personal rich media experiences a reality. Our business benefits from Motorola’s operationally sensitive approach to deploying additional capacity into our network and our customers benefit from Internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps that Kabel BW is able to offer across its cable network.”

"We're excited to be working with Kabel BW to enable the operator to offer both new and existing customers an ultra-broadband package that will deliver innovative multi-media experiences," said Joe Cozzolino, senior vice president and general manager, Motorola Mobile Devices and Home. "As they transition to a downstream channel bonding environment Kabel BW is leveraging our unique ability to seamlessly enable EuroDOCSIS 3.0 services and our commitment to protect their existing investment, all while lowering their cost of deploying additional capacity and IP services into their network."

As the highest-density, integrated downstream technology on the market, the Motorola TX32 supports 32 QAM channels in a single slot within the Motorola BSR 64000 I-CMTS/edge router. The solution enables cable operators to deliver significantly increased bandwidth to new DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 3.0 cable modems, while preserving operator investment in legacy DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 1.x and 2.0 cable modems.
