Zain Bahrain posts new record with Middle East’s first LTE call

Telecoms tech leader showcases ready-to-deploy LTE commercial equipment with live call conducted by Nokia Siemens Networks.

Zain Bahrain showcased the region’s first LTE call, setting new standards for the telecoms sector by achieving a download data speed of 70 Mbps. In a trial to demonstrate its LTE readiness, Zain Bahrain proved its preparedness and commitment to mass-scale deployment of this advanced technology just six months after announcing the Middle East’s first LTE contract with Nokia Siemens Networks.

Using ready-to-deploy LTE commercial equipment, the trial involved Nokia Siemens Networks’ Flexi base stations, installed in separate buildings, as well as its NetAct network management solution.

Achieving a minimum latency of 15 milliseconds – the smallest ever in any public LTE call – the live call was used to highlight applications such as multi-video streaming, high-resolution video conferencing, voice over LTE, and LTE terminal mobility within an office environment. The call also set a new record by achieving the region’s highest ever data download speeds of 70 Mbps.

“Setting standards and raising the bar on excellence have always been a Zain Bahrain prerogative,” said Mohammed Zainalabedin, general manager, Zain Bahrain. “This first ever live call is a taste of the excellence our customers can expect when our entire network upgrade is unveiled by the end of this year. It is part of the continuous effort at Zain Bahrain to keep our promise to our customers that we will always deliver a world-class mobile user experience.”

“This is the region’s first real experience with a real life LTE ecosystem,” said Rami Shatat, head of the Zain Bahrain customer team at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Not only does it provide a concrete example of what the LTE experience will look like, but more importantly the applications we demonstrated in the live call clearly point to the increased value Zain Bahrain can create within its portfolio, by way of new and advanced telecom services.”

When it is completed at the end of this year, Zain Bahrain’s LTE network will not only be a world-class network, but will serve as a showcase for all of Zain Group’s operations across the Middle East and Africa. The deployment of LTE technology will ‘future proof’ Zain Bahrain’s network, allowing it to offer local and visiting ‘One Network’ customers a wide range of attractive mobile services for years to come. The experience and knowhow gained from this advanced technology in Bahrain will be exported to and shared with all Zain Group’s operations.

Even before LTE comes on line, Zain Bahrain customers will find a dramatic improvement in accessing the Internet with speeds of up to 14 Mbps with I-HSPA. There will also be a dramatic improvement in coverage throughout the Kingdom, permitting Zain Bahrain customers to continue experiencing the best quality service wherever ever they are.

In Lebanon, the company manages ‘mtc-touch’ on behalf of the government. In Morocco, Zain owns 31% of Wana Telecom through a joint venture.

Zain offers innovative services in its markets such as ‘One Network’, the world’s first borderless mobile telecommunications network enabling customers when abroad to receive calls and sms without charge and to make voice and data calls at local rates throughout 20 countries in Africa and the Middle East. This service allows a customer to top up airtime in one’s home country or from more than 1,000,000 outlets within Zain’s One Network footprint.

Today, Zain Bahrain has developed into a successful fixed wireless service operator offering full-spectrum corporate telecoms solutions, voice and data services to customers in the Kingdom.

The company is committed to nurturing the finest Bahraini talent and has an energetic and inspired majority-Bahraini workforce. It's strong CSR initiatives have made Zain Bahrain an active partner in Bahrain's development and progress.

The Zain brand is wholly owned by Mobile Telecommunications Company KSC, which is listed on the Kuwait Stock Exchange (Stock ticker: ZAIN). Opera to boldly go where no browser has gone before

First details of Opera Space Edition emerge.

Opera Software brings the browser wars to new astronautical heights by publicly inaugurating its Future Opera Operations in Lunar Surroundings program. The ambitious project will culminate in the release of Opera Space Edition, the first Web browser in space.

"I believe that this company should commit itself to achieving the goal of putting a Web browser in space," said Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder, Opera. "No single space project in this period will be more impressive to other browser makers or more important for the long-range exploration of the Web, and none will be so difficult to accomplish. But, in a very real sense, it will not be one browser going to space – it will be an entire industry. For all of us must work to bring it there."

Key features of Opera Space Edition:

* Browse while leaving the Earth behind. Opera Space Edition supports Interplanetary Network Transport Protocol (INTP), which allows for long-range connectivity with the Internet, even at extreme ranges that cause traditional network transport protocols to fail due to latency and light-speed limitations
* Browse comfortably from the vacuum of space. Mission Mode ensures all browser operations can be monitored, adjusted and audited by Mission Control (except when using private browsing).
* Experience cross-suit compatibility. Opera Space Edition features Augmented Reality Browsing (ARB) to render Web content in a transparent overlay mode that is compatible with all major space suit Visual Retinal Displays (VRDs) or Heads-up Displays (HUDs).
* Enjoy touchscreen optimization for bulky gloves. Proximity sensors detect the exact region of the screen the user wants to access, and zoom allows for precise selection of the desired user-interface element.

Availability

Opera Space Edition is in closed beta testing. Sign up at http://www.opera.com/portal/inspace/ to be among the first to try the classified technology designed for Future Opera Operations in Lunar Surroundings.

Huawei Successfully Delivers Australia' s First 4G WiMAX Network with Vividwireless

Huawei has successfully deployed Australia' s first fourth-generation (4G) wireless network with Seven Network Limited company, vividwireless. Now in operation across Perth, the network is the first step in vividwireless' national WiMAX rollout and will deliver broadband speeds comparable to most ADSL2+ connections.

"It' s been a great experience for Huawei to work with vividwireless on such an ambitious network rollout," said Huawei Australia Chief Technology Officer Peter Rossi. "vividwireless now has an open, flexible, all-IP WiMAX network which has been built to deliver high-speed broadband and quality voice services."

Huawei supplied 150 WiMAX base stations (BTS) to vividwireless for the build, and will also supply the compact vividwireless USB modem, designed to provide high-speed broadband on-the-go. Huawei will also supply vividwireless with a ‘USB modem Booster' accessory, providing a signal boost for users with coverage issues due to building materials, tree cover or distance from base stations.

"Australian users have shown a growing appetite for mobile broadband services, and the vividwireless network will offer broadband speeds and prices comparable to fixed-line services – with the added benefit of mobility," Mr Rossi said. "The vividwireless network has been designed for data from the ground up. Huawei' s equipment uses technologies such as MIMO (multi-input-multi-output), beamforming and interference cancellation to provide more coverage and higher capacity from fewer sites. vividwireless also has strong green credentials, with Huawei technology reducing power consumption and increasing network efficiency."

vividwireless CEO Martin Mercer added: "Over 6 short months we have built Australia' s most powerful wireless broadband network and assembled all of the pieces of a leading internet business. This remarkable achievement is a testament to skill, experience, team work, and motivation. Support from Huawei, our supplier of network equipment and terminals, was vital to meeting this tight deadline."

While the vividwireless network currently operates on the mobile WiMAX 802.16e standard, Huawei' s software-defined radio (SDR) solution allows for a simple upgrade to the emerging 802.16m standard in the future. Huawei' s solution also allows vividwireless to migrate its network to LTE (Long Term Evolution) mobile technology in future, if it so chooses.

Huawei brings a wealth of experience to the partnership with vividwireless, having won over 60 contracts to deploy commercial WiMAX networks worldwide, including Europe, North America, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Middle East and Africa, and ranks No.1 in terms of newly added WiMAX commercial contracts. Huawei has delivered global WiMAX projects with operators including Clearwire in the US, BSNL in India, Globe in the Philippines and Telefonica in Morocco.

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) has completed the acquisition of Nortel's North American GSM business. Today's closing follows the announcement on November 25, 2009, that Ericsson had entered into an asset purchase agreement for these assets.

"The addition of Nortel's skilled GSM experts adds additional depth to Ericsson's newest business unit," said Rima Qureshi, head of Ericsson's CDMA unit. "The CDMA team acquired from Nortel late last year has built a strong foundation already, and this new acquisition places us in a great position to support our growing list of North American and International customers."

"The completion of this acquisition strengthens our position as a leading provider of telecommunications technology and services in the United States and Canada and shows our commitment to the market," said Angel Ruiz, Head of Ericsson North America. "The skill and experience the Nortel employees bring to Ericsson will help us continue to provide exceptional services to our customers."

The acquisition includes the transfer of important GSM business with North American operators and further strengthens Ericsson's ability to serve North America's leading wireless operators. More than 350 employees from Nortel will be integrated in the Ericsson group over the coming months.

The acquired operations are expected to be accretive to Ericsson's earnings within a year after closing.
