MediaTek to see growing shipments of LCD TV and handset solutions in 2Q10

Monday, April 26, 2010

Mediatek is expected to see its LCD TV and handset chip solutions grow 10% and 5-10%, respectively, in the second quarter of 2010, according to estimates of industry sources.

The LCD TV solutions will be a growth driver for MediaTek in the second quarter as the company has continued to strengthen its sales of LCD TV solutions to China and other emerging markets, the sources noted.

MediaTek's second-quarter revenues are likely to grow 2-8% sequentially to NT$33.4-35.3 billion (US$1.07-1.13 billion), the sources projected.

Gross margin for the second quarter will be relatively low as low-margin 2.5G and 2.75G handset solutions will account for a large portion of cellphone solution shipments, added the sources.

U.S. EPA Recognizes Motorola for Leading Green Power Purchases

Motorola’s renewable energy purchase from NativeEnergy supports new development of clean renewable resources.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced it has increased its ranking to No. 26 on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA's) National Top 50 list of the largest green power purchasers. This increased purchase further demonstrates Motorola's commitment to protecting the environment and builds on its existing relationship with EPA's Green Power Partnership.

Motorola is purchasing 119 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, which is 32 percent of the company's purchased electricity used in the U.S. The company is buying Green-e certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) from NativeEnergy that support the Langdon Wind Facility in North Dakota. This demonstrates a proactive choice to switch away from traditional sources of electricity generation and support cleaner renewable energy alternatives.

Today, EPA updated each of its National Top Partner lists, highlighting some of America's largest green power purchasers. In addition to moving up 20 spots on the National Top 50 list, Motorola also ranks No. 14 on the Green Power Partnership Fortune 500 list, up four spots from this time last year. Each list highlights EPA Green Power Partners that have completed the largest annual voluntary purchases through April 6, 2010. EPA updates its Top Partner Lists quarterly at www.epa.gov/greenpower/toplists/.

“We are pleased to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for our continued efforts to reduce our climate change impacts,” said Jodi Shapiro, vice president, Environment, Health and Safety, Motorola. “Motorola’s innovative spirit is at work, creating more sustainable solutions for tomorrow’s low-carbon and resource-constrained world.”

This purchase also qualifies Motorola for EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club, a distinction given to organizations that have significantly exceeded EPA’s minimum purchase requirements. Green Power Leadership Club members must purchase 10 times the partnership’s minimum requirement organization-wide.

"The road toward cleaner energy, cleaner air and a better future is a journey," said Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation. "EPA applauds business partners like Motorola for taking a big first step by embracing renewable energy."

According to U.S. EPA, Motorola's green power purchase of 119 million kWh is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of more than 16,000 passenger vehicles per year or the CO2 emissions from the annual electricity use of more than 10,000 average American homes.

Since 2005, Motorola has reduced its carbon footprint by 35 percent. In 2009, about 15 percent of Motorola’s global electricity came from renewable resources. The company’s goal is to increase its global purchase of electricity from renewable sources to 20 percent by 2010 and 30 percent by 2020. Motorola’s current purchase of renewable energy credits achieves its 2010 goal.

For more information on Motorola’s environmental initiatives, visit www.motorola.com/responsibility.

Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro. These resources generate electricity with a net zero increase in carbon dioxide emissions, while offering a superior environmental profile compared to traditional power generation sources. Green power purchases also support the development of new renewable energy generation sources nationwide.

About EPA’s Green Power Partnership
The Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that encourages organizations to buy green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with purchased electricity use. The Partnership currently has more than 1,200 Partner organizations voluntarily purchasing billions of kilowatt-hours of green power annually. Partners include a wide variety of leading organizations such as Fortune 500 companies, small and medium sized businesses, local, state, and federal governments, and colleges and universities. Enhancements – Design by Community

GLOBAL – This is it folks, the final week of voting for Design by Community. Last week over 4,000 of you voted for what you want to see in the concept device’s camera. Eight megapixels and 4X optical zoom were the order of the day, along with instant capture, HD video recording and a combination of Xenon and Dual LED flash. This week though we’re all about enhancements. No, we’re not talking Bluetooth headsets and device chargers here, we’re looking right out into the future. Read on to find out what’s in store for this week’s voting.

What would be your ideal option for power enhancements? What about a kinetic power booster? Or perhaps a solar charger. Either, if the tech was available, would enable you to keep the concept device juiced up on the go. The alternative option? How about an extra battery?

Enhancing a device is part and parcel of how we live with it right now, either through hardware accessories or getting the software to do more. The latter is mostly done through apps and firmware upgrades. But what if mobile computers could behave more like their desktop counterparts. What about being able to upgrade the whole OS. Or take it even further and have a concept device that can run multiple Operating Systems? Running two at the same time might be asking too much, even for the future, though the option to run different OSs could be an interesting one. What do you think?

Music is playing an increasingly important role in our mobile devices. How could we make it better? Wireless headphones is a bit “right now” so how about surround sound speakers? Would that make music and movies a better experience? Of course, we could just go crazy and add a karaoke machine. There might be apps available for that right now, for individual artists and tracks, but what if your on-board karaoke player could do more. Would you want it to?

On device storage is something I think we can never have enough of. As we shoot, record and save more on our devices, we need more space to keep all our stuff. The other week we offered device based or cloud based storage as options. The majority of you opted for device based. Is expandable microSD support enough, or should we push it further. What about upgradable flash drives so we can keep our devices in tune with our needs, as they develop. Or taking it closer to the PC experience and having upgradable hard drives. Would that be of interest?

Finally we have camera peripherals. How far could we push mobile cameras? Adding a snap on flash and mic could be a nice option. It’d certainly be a way to overcome the Xenon/Dual LED argument along with enhancing the way we record audio. Alternatively, we could view the upgrade experience in new ways, with the option to add bigger and better image sensors. That might be a step too far though, so how about the option to turn this concept device into a mini DSLR and have the option to add interchangeable lenses. Impractical? You decide.

MyDailyApp – WWF EcoGuru, Carbonfund.org Calculator and Climate Mission

GLOBAL - Over the past few weeks we’ve been flying the green flag here on Conversations with the help of Nokia’s Environmental Team and the easy to be green campaign. Last week the world joined in and celebrated Earth Day, a homage to all the good things on planet earth and a wake-up call for those who think recycling involves a bike.

To honour our lovely earth this week’s pick of the apps from MyDailyApp have an environmental theme as we cosy up with WWF, Carbonfund and Nokia. Join us after the jump for three wholesome, planet loving apps.

Leading the charge to get us thinking about our impact on planet earth is WWF EcoGuru. There’s no hiding from this app. First-up you’ll come face to face with your environmental dent by taking the green quiz. Are you greener than green or more of a mauve? Don’t fear if you’re above the world average or use more energy than the complete solar system can create, EcoGuru’s here to help with some handy tips and tricks to get you on the emerald road.

On your quest to become an EcoGuru the app will rate your tasks according to how much of an impact they have on mother earth. Switch to energy saving bulbs, that’ll be two green leaves (points) but if you take a shorter shower you’ll bag three. Rack up the points and you’ll soon see your green status rise from a lowly apprentice to bona-fide EcoGuru.

The WWF EcoGuru app is available for free in Ovi Store and works with Nokia touch-enabled (S60 5th Edition) mobile devices.

Joining EcoGuru in the green ranks is Carbonfund.org Calculator. The motto: Reduce what you can. Offset what you can’t. This app lets you calculate the carbon impact of your travel and buy offsets to scrub out the impact.

Load the app and confess to your travels whether by car, train or plane. The calculator, like mother earth’s debt collector, will work out the impact you had and calculate how much you should pay back to offset your trip. Before you make a donation be sure to check out the projects that Carbonfund is working on right now. In a nutshell they collect your donations and fund projects that remove CO2 from the air or prevent CO2 from being emitted. One such project targets methane, a gas that traps more than 20 times as much heat as CO2. The project is a Biodigester that takes in manure from ten nearby dairy farms and captures the methane as a clean burning fuel. That’s efficiency.

The app was created by Open Path Products as a Web Runtime widget. It’s compatible with Nokia S60 3rd Edition and S60 5th Edition devices and is available for $0.99 (USD) in Ovi Store.

Finally we have Climate Mission from Nokia. Like the name suggests, Climate Mission is all about saving the environment, but instead of bombarding you with facts and your own mishaps, this time it’s a game.

Climate Mission consists of four different challenges: Recycle, Ants, Fields and Trees. Each challenge encompasses seven levels of two or three games each, spread across the globe. The more you advance in levels the more difficult the game becomes with several hurdles and items appearing in your way. You’ll also receive tips and trips along your environmental junket across the globe. Watch the video to see the green game in action.

By all accounts the app will keep you amused for weeks and is amazingly fun, and beautiful to look at. Climate Mission is free to download from Ovi Store and is compatible with S60 5th edition devices.
